May 25, 2013 Hello Again, This morning after showering, I chose a pair of undershorts. While holding them up I was really shocked and I said out loud to myself, “Heavens to Betsy, these are bigger than Maggie’s bloomers.” Scarsdale diet, here I come. The next time you see me ride by on the red Spyder, I will only be half there. I want to ask you a question: how can any self-respecting Irishman give up eating potatoes? To make matters worse, my wife is a champion apple pie baker, and you think you’ve got problems? The Bible says to think something is equivalent to doing it. Do you think, if I just think about going on a diet, it will work? No potatoes – no apple pie. Come to think of it – I’ll never know for sure until I try it. The temperature hit 67 degrees before 11 this morning so I hurried home to change into shorts. How about a friendly weather report – one equal to the kind you would hear over the radio? Here goes: “Well the weather may get better for the remainder of today and possibly tomorrow. On the other hand, there is a 50% chance it won’t. Be sure and listen to the 6 p.m. report for some more of the same. Then maybe it won’t be the same.” With that the official weather guesser believing he was off the air said, “Charlie, I won’t be here tomorrow. It’s your turn to guess.” Next we would hear, “Remember every morning at 7 to listen to the famous family political discussion hour.” Every day our very own Charlie Brown challenges a guest with a political question. You will notice from the tone of Charlie’s voice, he is quite young but senior to his typical guest. Even though they do not know what they are talking about, it is educational to hear their points of view. If their program is recorded some day, they may get a chance to find out just how young they really were. Remember the old saying, “Listen to the young while they still know everything.” My friend and I stopped at the Little Falls Bakery. He had a slice of pizza and I had a halfmoon chocolate cookie and coffee. I’m still thinking about losing weight. I now think if I had already lost a little, I found it again. While at the bakery a lady stopped by our table and said, “I read your ‘Hello Again’ column every week. I love it but it’s getting too political” So maybe I should back off a little. What do you think? I admit I got a big kick out of the following blurbs Mr. Obama said, I quote: “I have no knowledge whatsoever about fast and furious.” Mr. O said, “I don’t have the slightest idea who sneaked sensitive national intelligence secrets,” and Mr. O said, “I promise you, I have no clue who was behind the security lapse and the cover up in Benghazi.” Then Mr. O said, “Let me assure you, I didn’t have the foggiest notion of what was going on at the IRS,” and Mr. O said, “I don’t know anything about the AP phone taps by my justice department,” and he continued with, “You can be confident that I am in charge.” The question is, are those blurbs funny or are they too political? Excuse me while I take a few non-political moments to giggle. All of this is too serious for this Irish-American lad (by the way, I do have a birth certificate to prove where I was born.) Even if you agree with the lady at the bakery, I’m sure you will have to believe the following – poor George Washington must have had a terrible time when asked to defend his position on

any subject or action. He couldn’t find a Bush to hide behind. It was even worse than that, he couldn’t find two Bushes. Speaking of Maggie’s bloomers, should we find a Bush for her to hide behind? I have to wonder – if Maggie is a thinking American and she is watching Washington, she must be concerned that they will scare her bloomers off. While we are chatting about a president, I was told when Romney was running for the office, he was knocked down by a couple of D.C. thugs and told to hand over all of his money or they would blow out his brains. Romney said, “Go ahead and shoot – as president I won’t need brains but I will need money.” Engagement: The period in a couple’s life when they get a chance to see if they could do better. In church Sunday, a man in the congregation was asked to close the service in prayer. I mumbled to myself – I couldn’t hear him and then realized he wasn’t talking to me. I am doing my best to figure out if western Montgomery is basically a crime-free area or just riddled with crime. Nearly every day driving from my home in St. Johnsville to the office between Nelliston and Palatine Bridge, I meet at least two law enforcement cars. Sometimes two sheriff cars followed by a NY State Trooper car. The scary part of all this law enforcement is the deputy sheriffs driving those cars must think that Route 5 is their own speedway. One day last week a sheriff car heading west between Nelliston and St. Johnsville must have been traveling in excess of 85 mph. I wonder what terrible crime was being committed to demand the attention of the deputy driving that car. Possibly some farmer was painting the wheels on his big red Farmall tractor with bright John Deere yellow. If that was really happening, or some equally serious offense was taking place, I can sort of agree with that above 85 mph speed. Maybe in such serious law breaking cases the sheriff cars should be allowed to drive 100 mph. Just get off the road. You driving your car will not add to the western Montgomery crime scene, and you may save the life of one of the deputies. I wished a friend of mine to have a good day and he told me to mind my own business. He would have any kind of a day that he wanted. I imagine he does have that right. Does that also give me the right to scratch his name off my friend list? That just might make my day. No, not really. Even bad friends are hard to find. If you enjoy receiving this paper, be sure to visit the advertisers. Without their advertising, this paper could not exist. Here in America, we enjoy freedom beyond our ability to understand. Including the right to bear arms. Say what we feel like saying, and most important of all to worship God and attend a church of our choice. This nation was formed on Christian principles and standards. I believe that is why this is the greatest nation of all. Remember – don’t kick a dog. He might bite back. Say howdy to your neighbor and wave hi when you see the red Spyder ramble by. God be with you and your family. Fred Lee and Family P.S. Isn’t it strange that the local newspaper somehow seems to fail to report on all of the western Montgomery County crime?

Whatchamacallits This pair of pliers is designed for repairing sewing machines. It was invented and patented by William Bernard at the W. Schollhorn Company in New Haven, CT. The idea behind this invention was to have only one plier for all the needs of installing sewing machine belts, versus several tools that each perform one aspect. Bernard Pliers can pinch, cut, and poke holes, all of which are needed in this type of repair work. The hole punch is perhaps the most curious part of the tool. Because a sewing machine’s belt must be fitted into a circle, its ends are connected with a small piece of wire. That wire is inserted into holes punched into the tips of the belt. Repairmen who do not have a Bernard Plier some-
times use a nail to punch the hole, instead. ~~~ Have your own Whatchamacallit? Send picture and description to eenger@leepub. com. Visit our Facebook page each week to see if you can figure out what the upcoming Whatchamacallit is!

A bird of a different feather writes his story by Willis “Skip” Barshied I am one of nature’s feathered creatures. Although I risk being considered conceited, I know I’m something special. I came to this windswept place called Stone Arabia about three weeks ago. I told the rest of the flock not to leave our warm winter home so early. What has one single bird to say to change many others’ minds? After all, I’m just a different bird but still an outstanding one. Long before we struck off for this Stone Arabia place, some who nested there last season thought that with a strong west wind we might be blown east to a place called Fonda. It was a pretty cold day when we reached our destination, which was a side yard of a guy who some of the older birds of the flock said was
named Skip. In fact that guy saw us soon after landing. I saw him watching us. He seemed to be especially watching me as if he picked me out from many other robins. Did he think I was strange just because I had a white head? I did not know whether I should feel complimented or insulted. This guy certainly spied on me. I showed him by being especially bold and approaching nearer than the rest of the flock. I began to be self conscious and even paranoid if that is within the capability of a white-headed robin. I was concerned that this big, strong creature pitied me possibly because I did not seem to have a mate. I decided I’d show him by taking my beautiful mate with me when
I came into his view. Boy, is she a sweet bird! She not only has looks but does most of the nest building also. I cavort around, picking up a seed here or a worm there. This is robin lazy street. I do not dare to tweet about it much though since all must be quiet while my mate is nesting. I hope that guy Skip respects my preening and does not require too many appearances. I’ll try to humor him. That friend of his, I believe his name is John, tried to trick me with some robin sounds made by something he took from his pocket. I showed him that there is no fear in this bird. So long for now! Your friend, The White Headed Robin with help from Skip, Stone Arabia, April 30, 2013.
My portrait, taken at my new home in Stone Arabia by John De Valve.

by David Uffington The biggest targets for identity theft The Federal Trade Commission has released a report with new information about identity theft. While it’s generally believed that seniors are the most likely victims of this type of fraud because they’re assumed to be more vulnerable, the report shows that’s not the case. The Consumer Sentinel Network, the database used in the report, is available only to law enforcement and includes information input by a long list of agencies and organizations, the Better Business Bu-reau, the FBI’s Internet Crime Com-plaint Center, the Post
Office, and even the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. During 2012 alone, 2 million complaints were logged, broken down as follows: 52 percent fraud, 18 percent identity theft and 30 percent other types of complaints, such as debt collection, banks and lenders, prizes, sweepstakes and lotteries, and impostor scams. Government documents and benefits were the most common type of identity theft, followed by credit cards and phone or utilities. Florida, Georgia and California have the highest per capital rate of identity theft. The average dollar loss per fraud victim was $2,350. In the Consumer

Network Sentinel Data Book, it appears that the older the age group, the higher the percentage of overall fraud victims, until reaching the seniors. 20-29: 15 percent 30-39: 16 percent 40-49: 19 percent 50-59: 23 percent 60-69: 17 percent Over 70: 9 percent However, when it comes to actual identity theft, the numbers are reversed: 20-29: 21 percent 30-39: 19 percent 40-49: 18 percent 50-59: 17 percent 60-69: 11 percent Over 70: 8 percent How does this happen? Scammers pretend to be from government agencies or credit-card companies and call to ask for personal information. Twenty-somethings, raised on
electronic gadgets, give it to them. If you’ve become a victim of identity theft, contact your bank and credit card companies. If you think your information has been compromised, put a freeze on your credit information at all three credit bureaus. Order copies of your credit reports and study them carefully to make sure all the information is correct. File a complaint with the FTC (www.ftc.gov) and the police. The information you add to the database will help law enforcement in their investigations. To learn more about the Sentinel Network, go to www.FTC.gov/sentinel. (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

by David Uffington Seven ways to save Chief Investment Officer Roger Paschke of the Hearst Corp. lists some often underutilized or overlooked ways that many of us can use immediately to generate extra cash and build more financial security. 1. Don’t maintain bank accounts that have monthly service charges, transaction fees or require minimum balances. Plenty of commercial banks, savings banks, credit unions or online banks offer accounts with no fees or minimum balances. 2. Review your home and auto insurance policies and consider increasing your
deductible to the highest amount you think you can afford if you had an insurance-covered loss. High deductibles will reduce your monthly or annual insurance payments. Also, combine your home and auto coverage with one company, which will result in additional savings. Insurance is useful when you have a loss, but over the long haul you will almost certainly pay more in premiums than you receive for any claims. 3. Check out deals on monthly charges for your cellphone. Cellphone companies are highly competitive and routinely offer deals on rates, with or without the purchase of a new phone. or two-year plans, which may appear less expensive upfront, but can be costly if you upgrade to a new phone or switch services midway through the plan. 4. If you have outstanding balances with multiple credit cards, combine the balances under one card with the most favorable rates and terms. Then pay off the debt with the highest interest rate first. Beyond that, pay off all of your credit-card balances as fast as possible. It’s the worst and most expensive kind of debt you can have. 5. Make one extra payment a year on your mortgage. You can make 13 payments a year instead of 12, and apply that extra payment against the principal bal-

Consider requesting that your local property assessor reappraise your home for property-tax purposes. If you’ve owned your home for more than five years, it’s probably worth a lot less now than what you paid for it, which means you may be paying too much in property taxes. 7. Montgomery County Public Health would like to ensure everyone is grilling safely this summer. A few helpful tips include: • Always wash your hands and forearms with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before AND after handling food. • When marinating foods, keep them in the refrigerator. If reusing the sauce that was used to marinate the raw meat or poultry, boil it before applying to cooked food. • When grilling, preheat the coals for at least 20-30 minutes. • If partially cooking food in the microwave, oven, or stove to reduce grilling time, do it immediately before placing the food on the grill. • True or False: A color change in the juice from the meat from red to gray is a reliable test to assure the meat is safe to eat? FALSE. Always use a food thermometer to confirm the meat is cooked to a safe
internal temperature that will kill any existing harmful bacteria. What is a “safe” temperature? Hamburgers 160°F Hot Dogs - 140°F Roasts/Steaks medium rare 145°F Roasts/Steaks medium - 160°F Roasts/Steaks well done - 170°F Poultry - 165170°F • Never place cooked food on a plate that previously held raw food. • Use one cutting board for raw meat, poultry, and seafood and another one for fresh fruits and vegetables. If not possible, wash the cutting board thoroughly with soap and hot water between uses. • Leftovers can be kept at room temperature for a maximum of two hours or one hour if the temperature is above 90°F. For more information on food bacteria and food safety go to www.fightbac.org or www. foodsafety.gov

Senior news line by Matilda Charles Why we’re suckers for Medicare scams The Affordable Care Act was signed in 2010, but at 2,409 pages, it’s no wonder so many people don’t understand all of it. Seniors especially are hit hard by not knowing what changes to Medicare and Medicaid are coming. That makes us more vulnerable to scammers. A UCLA psychologist, Shelley Taylor, recently did a study to determine why it’s easy to scam seniors. In a lab experiment with senior and young adults, seniors rated as “trustworthy” more pictures of people than the young adults did. In other words, we’re not picking up on clues. In a more telling experiment using brain imaging, it was discovered that seniors have less brain activity in the region that processes “risk and subtle danger.” Taylor believes that this is because we seniors have a “bias against negativity,” that after a Consignment Auction Every Tuesday Night, 6:00pm at JR’S Auction 56 Willett Street Fort plain NY 13339 518-9934668 Good Quality Items Wanted!! certain point in life, there is an “effort to make life more positive.” The problem for seniors, she says, is that it leaves us unable to “recognize untrustworthy cues.” When it comes to Medicare, here are two situations to beware of: 1) You get a call from a health company. You’re told that Medicare will pay for some type of medical equipment that you might need. You just need to give them your Medicare number. (Think about it: Why would you give your information to a complete stranger?) 2) You get a call saying that you’ll need a new Medicare card because of the Affordable Care Act, but they need to confirm your personal information. (Think about it: If you already have a Medicare card, they already know your information.) If someone has tried to get your Medicare information, report it at 800-447-8477. Motorcycles and alcohol Impaired driving is one of America’s most-often-committed and deadliest crimes. Overall in 2011, nearly 10,000 people (9,878) were killed in highway crashes involving a driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. The percentage of per se intoxicated motorcycle riders in fatal crashes is greater than the percentage of per se intoxicated drivers of passenger cars, SUV’s or pick-up trucks. The percentages of drivers with BAC levels .08 g/dL or higher in fatal crashes in 2011 were 29 percent for motorcycle riders, 24 percent for passenger cars, and 21 percent for light trucks. The percentage of drivers with BAC levels .08 g/dL or higher in fatal crashes was the lowest for large trucks (1 percent). Alcohol affects those skills essential to riding a motorcycle — balance and coordination. So it plays a particularly big role in motorcycle fatalities. In 2011, 30 percent of all fatally injured motorcycle riders had BAC levels of .08 or higher. An additional 7 percent had alcohol levels of BAC .01 to .07. Forty-two percent of the 1,1,997 motorcycle riders who died in singlevehicle crashes in 2011 had BAC levels of .08 or higher. Motorcycle riders killed in traffic crashes at night were 3.4 times more likely to have BAC
levels of .08 g/dL or higher than those killed during the day (47 percent and 14 percent, respectively). In 2011, motorcycle riders ages 4044 who were killed in fatal crashes had the highest rates of alcohol involvement. Far too many people still don’t understand that alcohol, drugs and motorcycle riding don’t mix. Impaired riding is no accident — nor is it a victimless crime. Many motorcyclists believe they only hurt themselves if they are in a crash, but the pain, suffering, and financial costs often extend to family members, friends, employers, insurance companies, and others. Riding a motorcycle while impaired is not worth the risk of losing your life, killing an innocent person, ruining your bike or going to jail. The consequences of impaired riding are serious and real. The trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for riding while impaired can be significant and can ruin your life. Violators often face jail time, the loss of their driver’s license, higher insurance rates, and dozens of other unanticipated expenses from attorney fees, other fines and court costs, towing and repairs, lost time at work, and numerous other consequences. Restoring Stone Arabia’s Dutch Barn Farm
by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Husband and wife team Marc Kratzschmar and Judy St. Leger moved to “Dutch Barn Farm”, located in Stone Arabia in 2009. At the time they realized the entire property required restoration and they made the commitment to have it done — one building at a time.
barn each year.” Although it was obvious that the posts and beams in the Dutch barn needed repair, last year the couple discovered that the floor was in need of some immediate attention. “We realized that we needed the current project to make the barn useful. The scope the work involves includes replacing the sills, repairing posts and b e a m s , replacing the siding a n d restoring the original doors. It’s a big project — but it will be worth it in the Judy St. Leger stands under a end.” beam with graffiti. Judy St. Leger at the one of the barns being restored at the “Dutch Barn Farm” in Stone Arabia. took on the job of restoring the Old Dutch barn. “Tim and Scott are both skilled wood workers,” states St. Leger. “Tim learned timber framing from his Grandfather, Everett Rau of the Dutch Barn Preservation Society.” St. Leger estimates that their Dutch barn dates back to before 1800. “Because of the events of the revolutionary war and the era of Dutch barns in this area, the building of the barn is dated between 1780 and 1810. However, based on the size of the anchor beams, we suspect the barn is closer to 1780.” The graffiti in the barn provides some entertainment and an insight to the folks that left their mark there. “I’m not sure of the oldest date,” St. Leger admits, “but my favorite is the name ‘John H. Wright’ from 1878. The handwriting is so graceful — it’s artwork.” One of the problems with restoring old buildings is obtaining boards and beams
that match the original and St. Leger says they are attempting to find floorboards 3 inches thick for their barn floor. St. Leger and Kratzschmar are hoping the barn will be completed this summer, as they intend to use it to dry hops and for hay storage. “These are good short-term uses that won’t do any harm. We don’t know yet what we’ll use it for in the longer term. We are looking for good suggestions.” The couple strongly believes in the restoration of old barns as opposed to destroying them. “Historic barns in NY deserve some attention,” St. Leger says. “A lot of the history of this state has a foundation in farms and farming. Barns symbolize farming. If we don’t restore old barns, we’ll lose an element that makes NY great. We call our farm ‘Dutch Barn Farm’. The barn is very important to us.” St. Leger and Kratzschmar raise sheep on their Stone Arabia farm.

restored telephones to the public. His address is 1446 Tramway, Sanford, NC 27332. For parts, I recommend Phoneco, Inc. 19813 E. Mill Road, P.O. Box 70, Galesville, WI 54630. Q: I am restoring two older dressers from the early 1900s. I would like to find hardware appropriate to the period. Any suggestions? — Rob, Metarie, LA A: Van Dyke’s Restorers has an impressive inventory, including such hardto-find items as dresser pulls, cabinet hardware and even Victorian doorbells and light brackets. The address is P.O. 52, Louisiana, MO 63353. Q: I recently purchased some glassware from a neighbor, including some stunning pieces of Stueben, Lalique and Boehm. I got the items at such a reasonable price that I wonder if I should simply hold on to them until economic conditions improve. — Betty, Waco, Texas A: You might begin by purchasing some of the better price guides. I especially like the Warman guides published by Krause, since they are easy to use and I think accurately reflect marketplace values. You also should find a dealer you trust for advice. Q: I have an Underwood typewriter from 1930 and need a cotton ribbon for it. — Sam, Sun City, AZ A: TTS Business Products has cotton ribbons for older machines made by Royal, Underwood and Remington. Contact it at 325 Nassau Blvd., Garden City South, NY 11530, and typebar@aol.com. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

How do I begin the process of buying a home? Start by thinking about your situation. Are you ready to buy a home? How much can you afford in a monthly mortgage payment? How much space do you need? What areas of town do
you like? After you answer these questions, make a “To Do” list and start doing casual research. Talk to friends and family, drive through neighborhoods, and look in the “Homes” section of the newspaper. Source: HUD.gov
How do I select the right real estate agent? Start by asking family and friends if they can recommend an agent. Compile a list of several agents and talk to each before choosing one. Look for an agent who listens well and understands your needs, and whose
judgment you trust. The ideal agent knows the local area well and has resources and contacts to help you in your search. Overall, you want to choose an agent that makes you feel comfortable and can provide all the knowledge and services you need. Source: HUD.gov

How to safely light and extinguish a campfire A roaring campfire is often a staple of the camping experience. A campfire to cook food or keep warm is an asset at any campground, and in the evening hours, a fire can provide a sense of security against inquisitive forest animals. A burning fire can also illuminate a campsite, which makes maneuvering around the site easier.
Although there are many benefits to having a campfire, it’s important to note that fires, especially in very dry conditions, can be dangerous. It is essential to check a particular campsite or park’s posting about drought conditions to avoid an accident. In the wrong conditions, a cozy fire for toasting marshmallows can grow into an
out-of-control wildfire in a matter of seconds. Starting a fire When you are ready to start a fire it is important to keep safety in mind. • Pick a safe spot to light the fire. Many campfires have fire rings for campers to use. If you are selecting a fire location on your own, choose an area away from brush or other easily ignitable ma-
terial. Make a ring with large rocks to keep the fire from spreading. Keep the fire several feet away from your tent. • Gather materials during the day so you will not be scrambling for them after dark. You will need both tinder and kindling to light a fire and keep it roaring. Tinder is any small, highly flammable material that can light and burn quickly. Fibrous plant material, small twigs and newspaper make good tinder. Kindling is small pieces of wood that will burn long enough to catch larger
air to move freely through the fire to make ignition easier. Light the tinder from four compass points to get it all to light. Slowly blow air into the fire to allow it to burn hot enough to catch the kindling. Continue to add small pieces of kindling until you have a nicely sized fire. Then you can add larger pieces of dry wood for a big blaze. • Do not use accelerants when starting a fire or keeping it going. Avoid the use of chemicals, including lighter fluid and other accelerants in your campfire. Do not use
wilderness are burnt from carelessness with regard to campfires. • Put out the fire a half hour to an hour before you plan to leave the campground. There should be mostly ash and few chunks of coal left if you have planned accordingly and started to wind down the fire before extinguishing it. • Use a stick to stir up the wood and ash and distribute the burning coals and embers. This is to extinguish any remaining flames as much as you can. • Pour water over the
logs of wood on fire. Finally, you will need a few logs of thicker wood that will sustain the fire. Have plenty of material on hand to be able to continue the fire, or you may find yourself foraging in the darkness when the fire goes out. • Create a teepee or X pattern for a well-burning fire. Layer your tinder as the first level of the fire. Stack a few pieces of kindling on top of the tinder in an X or teepee shape. Ensure there is enough
chemically treated paper or plastic materials in kindling, as they can produce noxious fumes and smoke. Accelerants can cause the fire to burn out of control. Keep the fire contained to what you can manage, and always keep a watchful eye on the fire. Maintaining the fire You may need to fiddle with the fire from time to time to vent it and allow for equal burning. Having an ample amount of wood on hand will enable you to feed the fire easily. It’s much easier to keep a fire going than start from scratch once it has burned out, especially in the dark. Be mindful of embers that drift in windy conditions. Also, do not put your face or body directly over a fire. If the wood pops, you could be burned. Children should be carefully supervised when around a campfire. Extinguishing the fire After building your campfire, completely put it out when you are done. Thousands of acres of
hot ashes to drown all embers. It’s not just the red embers you have to worry about. Pour water until all the hissing sounds stop. Avoid standing directly above the fire when you pour the water because it will generate a lot of steam and smoke. If you do not have water on hand, mix dirt or sand with the embers to smother the flames. Continue to do so until the material is cool. • Stir the ashes again with a shovel or stick to further ensure the fire is not still burning. • Make sure everything is wet and cold to the touch before you leave the campsite. If the fire area is too hot to the touch, it’s too hot to leave it because a fire may reignite. • Once you feel that everything is cool, you can scoop the coals and ash into a bag and carry it out of the woods for disposal. Knowing how to safely light, maintain and extinguish a fire is an essential component of safe

In the Grow: Question & Answer by B. Rosie Lerner, Purdue Extension Consumer Horticulturist Lightning strike damage Q. Lightning struck my maple tree early this morning. The tree has no visible damage on any of the outside bark, but as you can see from the pic-
ture, the ground above the root system was blown away in ruts in every direction. Do you have any opinion about the likely survival of this tree? Thanks for any input. A. That is quite the “striking” photo! I wish I could be more specific, but there really is no way to know the extent of the
injury to the tree. I would expect some of the root system to be affected, at the very least, and that could be a gradual process of showing up in the top growth. I would say there is no need for immediate action; it’s best to take a waitand-see approach. If you see dieback in the canopy,

the dead/dying limbs should be pruned out so they don’t become a hazard. If greater than 50 percent of the canopy ends up dying back, you might consider removing the tree. You’ll find additional information on lightning damage at www.hort.purdue.edu/ext/lightningstrikes.html and
www.ppdl.purdue.edu/pp dl/hot11/6-2.html. Mock Strawberry Q. I found this vine growing next to a fence gate in my yard. I am having a bit of difficulty identifying it; maybe you can help. Is this poison ivy? Thank you. A. Good news — this is not poison ivy! It looks
like mock strawberry, which would have yellow flowers. The plant is so named for the small, red, seedy fruits that look like strawberries; however, they look a lot better than they taste! See www.illinoiswildflowers.info/wee ds/plants/mock_strawberry.htm for more information.

Chow Line: Are you getting enough vitamin D? Q: What does vitamin D do? How much of it do e need? A: Vitamin D plays a wide variety of roles. For one thing, it helps the body absorb calcium, which builds strong bones and prevents osteoporosis. Vitamin D’s effect is significant: If you don’t get enough, your body absorbs only 10 to 15 percent of the calcium you consume. With vitamin D, absorption jumps to 30 to 40 percent. In addition, muscles,
nerves, the immune system and many other bodily functions all require vitamin D to do their jobs properly. The recommended amount of vitamin D for most people is 600 IU (international units) per day. Infants up to 12 months need less, 400 IU, and adults 71 or older need more, 800 IU. How do you know if you’re getting enough? It’s not easy. Fortunately, nearly all milk in the United States is fortified
with vitamin D, at a rate of 400 IU per quart — but that equals just 100 IU per cup. Other dairy foods, including cheese and ice cream, are usually made with non-fortified milk, so they often don’t provide any vitamin D. Fish that’s high in fat, such as salmon, tuna and mackerel, is a good source. Beef liver, cheese and egg yolks have small amounts. Breakfast cereal and juice often are fortified with vitamin D. bels to be sure. Luckily, people also get vitamin D from the sun. One type of ultraviolet radiation converts a chemical in the skin into vitamin D3, which the liver and kidneys transform into active vitamin D. However, the sun doesn’t always help much, especially during the winter or if people use sunscreen, and experts are concerned that vitamin D deficiency is much too common. Some people are more at risk: People who are obese tend to have lower blood levels of vitamin D. Those with darker skin and older people have more trouble
converting the sun’s rays into vitamin D and thus are also at higher risk. The only way to know if your vitamin D level is low is to get a blood test. Your doctor then can tell you whether you should take a vitamin D supplement. Interestingly, some scientists believe the current recommended amounts are too low. More vitamin D, they say, could not only prevent deficiencies but offer additional benefits against a whole range of illnesses and chronic diseases. For example, a recent study in the journal Hypertension found that African-
Americans who took 4,000 IU of vitamin D a day for three months averaged a four-point drop in blood pressure. However, experts are cautious about recommending a higher intake, because excess vitamin D is not passed from the body but is stored in fat tissue. Over time, too much of this good thing can become toxic. More research will help determine if higher amounts are advisable.
