June 22, 2013 Hello Again, According to Wall Street data, most of the huge international (America-based) companies are posting great profits. It could be said, “The stock market is booming.” Being a simple country boy thinker, I wonder how many of those huge profit making companies are in fact American companies in heart. The question could be, “If they are in fact making those huge profits – where is all that money going?” Is that money creating employment here in America or is it being funneled to some other business expansion in a foreign country, which in fact, will kill more American jobs – again? Are you getting rich? Do you know anyone who is getting rich? The answer should be – the owners of those stock companies. The owners are those investors – such as you and I – who have purchased shares of stock in stock companies (aka corporations.) So what is happening to all of that money? In some cases, the profit rich companies are buying other companies. In other words, they are taking profits, which in great part should be shared with their stockholders, and buying other companies – sometimes paying more for those companies than the stock value of the company. Some companies are just plain stock-piling the money. Worded in a more simple way, they are using our money (stock holders) to purchase another company and in so doing, failing to pay us, their owners, the dividends we deserve. Then, due to the fact the parent company is considered larger, increase the salaries and perks of management. To make matters worse, by using hocus pocus camouflage, our so-called American companies are building or supporting factories in foreign countries, which cause our homeland factories to close. In nearly all cases, the top management group – board members, presidents, vice presidents, CEO’s, CFO’s, and others are receiving compensation for their so-called expertise and efforts at a basically immoral level; often millions of dollars per year in salary with perks and options worth even more. I dare not name the famous oil millionaire who says, “Most of those higher ups in America’s biggest corporations do not even know what they are doing and that middle management actually runs the companies.” It would appear that we might be the most gullible working class in the world. In fact, we are the most gullible if we swallow all of the lies offered up to us by Washington. For example the June 7, 2013 payroll jobs report released states that 179,000 new jobs were created in the month of May. That certainly sounds good, too good to be true? You decide. Let’s back track for a bit so that we can make an intelligent decision. Let’s say that here in our valley a hotdog stand operator hires a waiter to serve up his hot dogs. Can that job be considered a source of new money for our area? Or will nearly all of the hot dogs be sold to native valley residents who will pay for the hot dogs with money already in their pockets, which was already here in the valley? Has any new money been created or merely swapped from one valley pocket to another valley pocket? Is that job creation? Nearly every job that was created and reported in the jobs report was similar in one way or another to our hot dog job. Nearly none manufactured a product here and sold it out of the U.S.A. The only new job figure that would truly make sense would be to manufacture some item here in our valley and sell it to a user in say Colorado, or New Mexico. Better yet, sell it to some user in a foreign

country: China, Japan, England, or Germany. Now that would be real job creation. Washington keeps suggesting we create jobs by hiring teachers, police officers and government workers. The only thing that accomplishes is to create additional drain on the tax dollar, and up go your taxes. That makes about as much sense as a married man hiring his wife to work in their home and claim he has created a job. Let’s take a look at the year 1967. Montgomery County had its own daily newspaper, the Amsterdam Evening Recorder and Daily Democrat. It was a fine local daily owned by a family. Now in the 2013 the name has been changed to The Recorder – no reference to Amsterdam or the political word democrat. I wonder why? However, with the loss of subscribers which the daily newspaper industry is facing, we are fortunate to still have our own daily, and it is still printed in Amsterdam. Utica lost its morning newspaper – The Press – and changed the moniker of its remaining daily newspaper to just plain Observer. The Herkimer Telegram, The Little Falls Times, and The Observer are no longer printed in Oneida County. Over recent years three Oneida and Herkimer county daily newspapers have closed their print shop doors and now are printed in southern New York. Even though Oneida-Herkimer counties lost those valuable jobs – let’s be thankful the three papers are not products of China, Japan or elsewhere. An August 21, 1967 Associated Press release stated President Johnson holds a slim 15-13 margin of support for his Vietnam War policies among 28 senators whose seats will be at stake in the 1968 elections. Is it possible that President Obama will lose support from members of his own democrat party, such as L.B. Johnson did in 1967 when democrats fear losing their seats due to the much feared health program? Would you back a party policy that you may not believe in, which could cost your seat as a U.S. senator or representative? I believe if either did support a policy they did not believe in, their moral fiber is so weak that they should not be there to start with. Little Billy threw his school books on the kitchen counter. “What did Mama’s little baby learn in school?” asked his mother. “I larned two six grade punks to not call me ‘Mama’s little baby!’” he proudly said. It has been reported that in Washington, two groups were hired on the same day: one group to dig up facts on our economy and the other to bury them. They were both taught to say, “I can’t remember.” In the first verse of the Holy Bible, it says, “God created the Heavens and the Earth.” Who would be better at giving us advice on government, business, and personal life than he who created it in the beginning? Read the Bible – it’s God’s way of communication. Well until next time, keep on smiling and saying your prayers. Say howdy to your neighbors and wave to the red three-wheeled Spyder when it putts by. Remember, two hands. Fred Lee and Family

Online Farmers’ Market now available in the Mohawk Valley
by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Tired of trying to shop farmers’ markets for fresh, locally grown, organic produce and meat? Your problem may be solved by turning on the computer and ordering what you want from FarmieMarket, an online farmers’ market now available in the Mohawk Valley. “FarmieMarket is a venture that stemmed from a lifetime of involvement in the agricultural industry, and my personal beliefs in promoting local family farms through economic and environmental sustainability,” said Sarah Gordon, the founder and Chief Executive of FarmieMarket. “As a third generation farmer, I grew up on a beautiful farm settled on a hilltop in Knox, NY raising grassfed beef and our own annual hay crop. Our family farm, Gordon Farms, has stayed afloat over the years — sometimes by a narrow margin — through my family’s hard work.” Gordon said that small farms like her family’s farm often work with limited resources and can’t take time away from the farm to be at a farmer’s market, which frequently doesn’t pay. “By marketing on behalf of family farms online, I can save farmers time and money and reach a broader customer base than may be at a traditional farmers’ market,” she explains. Since the launch of FarmieMarket in June 2010, the demand has grown incredibly. “FarmieMarket is presently serving a contiguous 12 county zone in the Hudson-Mohawk Region from Cooperstown to Saratoga to Beacon through 4 different service territories,” said Gordon. Each market connects customers to local farms. “We had been toying with the idea of an online farmer’s market for a while and looked at a couple different models,” said Stacy Handy, cocoordinator of the new Mohawk Valley FarmieMarket. Montgomery County Agriculture Development Director Missy Potter and the Water and Soil
Tom Takacs of Takacs’ Greenhouse & Gardens displays some of his organically grown produce, which is available through the Mohawk Valley FarmieMarket.
Sue Keith of Creek’s Edge Elk Farm and Stacy Handy (with her children Elizabeth, Evelyn and baby Nathaniel) of Crum Creek Farm display a few of the products available through the “FarmieMarket” they are heading up in the Mohawk Valley. Photos by Elizabeth Tomlin AED program hosted a meeting introducing Gordon to Handy and Sue Keith. “We were intrigued by her ideas,” commented Handy, “and we spent the weekend talking about it and researching FarmieMarket.” Handy said she and Keith decided it was the best model they had seen and they decided to apply as Mohawk Valley district coordinators. “Consumers can order once a week, using the online store. They can choose what, how much, and from whom they want to buy their produce, meat, etc.” The customer pays with his credit card upon checkout. Keith compares the FarmieMarket to making purchases from Amazon.com. “A great thing about FarmieMarket is that you can order anytime from your own computer and your order will be delivered to your door.” At this time the Mohawk Valley FarmieMarket has six vendors, including Creek’s Edge Elk Farm, Crum Creek CSA, Blue Moon Farm, Willowplace Farm, Takacs’ Greenhouse and the Bird Haven Bakery. “We are on the search for more vendors from all across our territory, which includes Montgomery and Fulton Counties, Little Falls, Cooperstown and Cherry Valley areas,” said Handy. “We are specifically looking for nonmeat producers.” Since the Mohawk Valley FarmieMarket makes deliveries on Thursdays, orders must be placed by 8 a.m. on Wednesdays. Morning or evening deliveries are available and there is no membership fee. All farmers participating in Farmie Market.com are required to only sell products that are 100 percent free of antibiotics, herbicides, hormones, pesticides, preservatives and are also GMO-free. E-mail MohawkValley@farmiemarket.com or go to www.Farmiemarket.com for more information.

Whatchamacallits Speculums are medical devices that hold open any cavity in the body. This particular one was designed for horses and was purchased in Cobleskill, NY. It is a mouth speculum for horses. The arms are inserted between the horse’s lips and the screw on the handle adjusts how far the speculum will open. Veterinarians typically use this device when working on a horse’s teeth. It could also be used for other mouth and tongue inspections. Modern speculums come in a few styles and varieties. Not all are made from metals. You can find plastic or rubber ones, as well. Most are made in a wedge shape, with the narrow end inserted into the horse’s mouth. This angle giving veterinarians more space in which to work.
~~ Have your own Whatchamacallit? Send picture and description to eenger@leepub.com. Visit our Facebook page each week to see if you can figure out what the upcoming Whatchamacallit is!

Calendar of Events Erie Blvd., Canajoharie, NY. 9-11 am. NYS Public Health Law requires that all dogs, cats and domestic ferrets shall have initial vaccinations administered against rabies no later than 4 months of age and stay up to date with re-vaccinations. Revaccinations are required one year later & a booster shot every 3 years. It is important to have pets vaccinated in a timely manner in order for the pet to be considered protected against the virus. Pet owners should bring proof of their pet’s last rabies vaccination. This
helps the veterinarian determine whether the pet will receive a one or three year vaccination; without it your pet will receive a 1 year vaccination only. To assure the safety of other pets and people; dogs must be leashed; cats and ferrets must be contained in a pet carrier or box when attending the rabies clinic. Veterinarian administration fee is $10/Rabies Vaccine. The June 22, clinic is offered free of charge to Montgomery County residents only, but open to everyone. Suggested donation is
$10. Contact Montgomery County Public Health, 518-853-3531. JUL 1-5 Christian Lake Bible Conference Pastor Brett Popp of the Christian Church of Charleston Four Corners, Sprakers, NY, will be the guest speaker. Services will be held Mon. - Fri. at 7:45 pm with the guest speaker of the week with a bible class Tues. - Fri. mornings at 9 am. Please check with the office for details. Drive-ins are welcome at either service and are open to the public. Also included are a campground, beach, boats, fishing and camps available for public use, with a reservation. Protect your house and family (NAPSA) — Protect your biggest investments: your family and your home. A few easy electrical safety steps can help ensure that your home continues to be a safe haven for your family. The Electrical Safety Foundation Inter-national recommends the following tips to help protect your home and fami-
ly from electrical hazards and fires: • Regularly check all cords, outlets, switches and appliances for signs of damage or wear. • Use extension cords only temporarily. • Be sure that outlets are not overloaded with too many devices. They can overheat and start a
fire. • Look and listen for warning signs of an electrical problem such as outlets and switches that are warm, or make crackling, sizzling or buzzing sounds. • Always replace fuses or circuit breakers with the correct size and amperage. • Consider having
your breakers upgraded to state-ofthe-art AFCI circuit breakers. Keep the electrical panel accessible so you can quickly shut off power in an emergency. For more electrical safety tips, visit www.esfi.org.

(NAPSA) — Cleaning your vehicle inside and out prevents the buildup of damaging chemicals and dirt and helps ensure proper visibility needed for safe driving. How to clean your car To get started, remove any clutter from inside the car, including items that have accumulated in the trunk that can add extra weight and reduce fuel efficiency. The next step is to thoroughly clean and vacuum the interior and wash the windows. When washing the outside, include the tires, wheels, underside and fenders to eliminate any road salt or grime. Wheels and tires should be cleaned with a mitt other than the one used to wash the body. This will avoid contaminating the vehicle’s paint with debris from the wheels and tires. Wash in the shade and with a product sold specifically for cars. Wash one section at a time, thoroughly rinsing away the soap as you go.
Work your way down toward the front, sides and rear of the vehicle. Clean the fenders and bumpers last since they will have the most dirt and grime that can contaminate the wash mitt. Give the car a final rinse: Remove the spray nozzle from the hose and let the water cascade down the surfaces of the vehicle. To avoid water spots, dry your car with a chamois or other product made for drying. The last step is to wax the car. This should be done out of direct sunlight and every six months. It goes a long way toward protecting the vehicle’s finish and makes subsequent washes easier. If you found any stone chips, rust or other problem spots while washing your vehicle, the experts at the Car Care Council recommend having these taken care of immediately to prevent further damage. For further facts and tips, visit www.carcare.org.

Paying a premium for high octane gasoline? Unless it’s recommended by your owner’s manual, don’t spend the money on high octane gas. In most cases, there’s no benefit. Higher octane helps only if you have problems with your engine “knocking.” Read your owner’s manual Unless your engine is knocking, buying higher
octane gasoline is a waste of money. Premium gas costs 15 to 20 cents per gallon more than regular. That can add up to $100 or more a year in extra costs. Studies indicate that altogether, drivers may be spending hundreds of millions of dollars each year for higher octane gas than they need.
It may seem like buying higher octane “premium” gas is like giving your car a treat, or boosting its performance. But take note: the recommended gasoline for most cars is regular octane. In fact, in most cases, using a higher octane gasoline than your owner’s manual recommends offers absolutely no benefit. It

won’t make your car perform better, go faster, get better mileage, or run cleaner. Your best bet: listen to your owner’s manual. The only time you might need to switch to a higher octane level is if your car engine knocks when you use the recommended fuel. This happens to a small percentage of cars. About octane ratings What are octane ratings? Octane ratings measure a gasoline’s ability to resist engine knock — a rattling or pinging sound that results from premature ignition of the compressed fuel-air mixture in one or more cylinders. Most gas stations offer three octane grades: regular (usually 87 octane), mid-grade (usually 89 octane), and premium (usually 92 or 93). The ratings are posted on bright yellow stickers on each gas pump. What’s the right octane level for your car? Check your owner’s manual. Regular octane is recommended for most cars. However, some cars with high compression engines, like sports cars
and certain luxury cars, need mid-grade or premium gasoline to prevent knocking. How can you tell if you’re using the right octane level? Listen to your car’s engine. If it doesn’t knock when you use the recommended octane, you’re using the right grade of gasoline. Will higher octane gasoline clean your engine better? No, as a rule, high octane gasoline doesn’t outperform regular octane in preventing engine deposits from forming, in removing them, or in cleaning your car’s engine. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires that all octane grades of all brands of gasoline contain engine cleaning detergent additives to protect against the build-up of harmful levels of engine deposits during the expected life of your car. Should you ever switch to a higher octane gasoline? A few car engines may knock or ping even if you use the recommended octane. If this happens, try switching to the next highest octane grade. In
many cases, switching to the mid-grade or premium-grade gasoline will eliminate the knock. If the knocking or pinging continues after one or two fill-ups, you may need a tune-up or some other repair. After that work is done, go back to the lowest octane grade at which your engine runs without knocking. Will knocking harm my engine? Occasional light knocking or pinging won’t harm your engine, and doesn’t mean you need a higher octane. But a heavy or persistent knock can lead to engine damage. Is all “premium” or “regular” gasoline the same? The octane rating of gas labeled “premium” or “regular” isn’t the same across the country. One state may require a minimum octane rating of 92 for all premium gasoline, while another may allow 90 octane to be called premium. To make sure you know what you’re buying, check the octane rating on the yellow sticker on the gas pump. Source: www.consumer.ftc.gov
Start your engines with do-it-yourself car care The non-profit Car Care Council has launched a new video aimed to take the unknown out of auto parts stores. Entitled “Explore an Auto Parts Store,” this video opens the door to the neighborhood part store for all vehicle owners. You do not have to be an expert to get involved with car care, and these few minutes give the jump start needed to save time and money at home. “The car plays a large role in the lives of many Americans, yet few truly understand them,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Taking on a DIY project is a great way to learn, have fun and understand your personal vehicle better. This prospect can be daunting for those who may not have worked on their car before, but our new video takes the unknown out of getting started.” Created to help all consumers understand the DIY options available when visiting a store, this
video addresses finding materials for simple projects such as checking oils at home, changing wiper blades, testing the battery and, of course, fun accessories. The counterperson at an auto parts store can assist consumers in finding the right parts and give referrals to a repair shop when a job is too big. For some drivers, taking on a few simple tasks at home can help in understanding and building a connection withtheir car. A visit to the auto parts store is an easy and rewarding way to begin the journey to longer ve-
hicle life and better car care. “Explore an Auto Parts Store” can be viewed by visiting the Car Care Council’s website at www.carcare.org/2013/0 6/video-explore-an-autoparts-store/. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a copy of the council’s Car Care Guide or for more information, visit www.carcare.org.
Q: My dad is approaching 70 and seems to be getting more confused and forgetful. We don’t think it’s anything serious right now, but should we be worried about dementia? A: Occasional lapses of memory are nothing to worry about, whether you’re age 40 or 80. But forgetfulness does become more common as we age. It takes longer for the brain to process new information, and it’s harder to recall things we’ve known in the past. In addition, distractions are more disruptive as we get older and can cause us to lose focus on
what we’re doing. According to the National Institute on Aging, stress, anxiety or depression can cause more problems with confusion and forgetfulness. If your father is dealing with loneliness, boredom or other emotional problems, be as supportive as possible. If his confusion persists over a long period, seek help from a doctor or counselor. Other health issues could also affect memory and brain function, including a deficiency of vitamin B12, chronic alcoholism or even (very rarely) a brain tumor.
Some types of thyroid, kidney or liver disorders can also cause such problems. These are all serious medical conditions and need to be treated by a doctor. Some medications also can affect the memory. Even more serious would be dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other problems. Anyone experiencing an abrupt loss of memory or a sudden bout of confusion should see a doctor immediately: It could be a sign of vascular dementia caused by a series of strokes or other changes to the brain’s
blood supply. Alzheimer’s disease is usually slower to develop. Symptoms that should prompt a call to a doctor include: • Asking the same question over and over. • Becoming lost in familiar places. • Not being able to follow directions. • Getting confused about time, people and places. • Not taking care of oneself - eating poorly, not bathing or being unsafe. Barring any serious medical problems, your father can take steps to
help sharpen his ability to keep on track: • Plan tasks, make “to do” lists, and use memory aids like notes and calendars. • Stay involved in activities that stimulate the mind, and keep physically active. • Eat a healthy diet, including almonds and walnuts; fruits and vegetables; fish and shellfish; and dark chocolate in small amounts. • Limit alcohol use, and if he smokes, stop. More information is
available from several reliable sources, including the American Medical Association and the National Institute on Aging. Chow Line: Be safe, not sorry, when grilling food Q: A colleague mentioned he got really sick after a cookout last year. What are the most important things to remember regarding food safety when grilling out this season? A: No one really wants to think about food poisoning when they’re enjoying the outdoors and grilling food. But food safety is just as important to keep in mind whether you’re in the kitchen, at your backyard barbecue or grilling food at the company picnic. The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service offers great guidance in “Grilling Food Safety 101” online at www.foodsafety.gov/blog/grillingsafety.html. And, Ohio State University Extension offers more tips in a new video online at http://go.osu.edu/grillsafe. Food safety specialists say it’s especially impor-
tant to make sure meat is cooked thoroughly when grilling out. People used to think that if meat looks pink, it isn’t done, and if it looks brown, it’s fine to eat. But food safety researchers have found that that’s false. Meat can be pink and be cooked thoroughly; it can be brown and not cooked enough. The only way to tell is by using a meat thermometer. Be sure to insert the thermometer so it gets to the thickest part of the meat, but doesn’t touch any bone, which can distort the temperature reading. For burgers, insert the thermometer sideways and be sure it’s testing the center portion of the patty. Safe temperatures include: • Hot dogs: 165°F or until steaming hot. • Poultry, including ground poultry: 165°F. • Ground beef and oth-
er ground meat (not poultry): 160°F. • Whole cuts of pork, lamb, veal and beef, including steaks and chops: 145°F (followed by a three-minute rest time). • Fish: 145°F. Other things to bear in mind: • Don’t take cooked food from the grill and put it on the same plate that held the raw food. After you place the food on the grill, either thoroughly wash the plate and the utensils you used to handle the raw food, or use a fresh plate and set of utensils for the cooked food. There’s just too great of a possibility that bacteria from the raw food — which is killed by thorough cooking — will recontaminate the food after it’s cooked. • Don’t let
food stay out for too long. The general rule is to not let perishable food sit out without refrigeration or heating for longer than two hours. But if it’s a hot summer day above 90°, the risk that foodborne pathogens can multiply to dangerous levels increases, and the time limit drops to one hour. Chow Line is a service of Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences and its outreach and research arms, Ohio State University Extension and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center.

Tips for buying a home in today’s market (StatePoint) — If you’re considering buying a home, some experts think you should get a move on it. Interest rates are at 65-year record lows and national home prices have finally hit bottom and are on the rise. Despite what you may be hearing, loans are available for those with good credit histories, stable income and sufficient savings.
Determining how much “home you can afford” depends on several factors, including your annual gross income, credit history, current mortgage rates and the amount of your down payment. In today’s market, you can expect a down payment to generally be between 5 to 20 percent of the purchase price for a conventional mortgage. Lenders recommend that

Avoid borrowing pitfalls Unscrupulous lenders can damage your credit and cause you financial hardship. Here are some ways to avoid becoming a victim: • Say ‘no’ to easy money. Beware if someone claims that your “credit problems won’t affect the interest rate.” If a solicitation is really appealing, get it in writing and seek a second opinion. • Talk to several lenders to find the best loan. • Know if the loan offered to you charges a fee if you pay it off early. If it’s a requirement of the loan, ask about other products that don’t contain this type of penalty. • Ensure documents are correct and complete. for a loan. Never sign documents that have incorrect dates or blank fields. • Ask for written estimates that include all points and fees. When you get to the closing table, if any fees or charges differ from what was previously disclosed, delay closing until all terms are understood. • If you’re taking equity out of your property, only take the minimum. Equity typically builds slowly over time, so it’s important to try to preserve it.
• If you’re not sure, don’t sign! Get advice first from a reputable consumer credit counseling agency or housing counselor. Know the mortgage process Mortgages are serious long-term financial commitments. Selecting the right mortgage may make a big difference in your monthly payments and overall cost of your loan. To determine the best term for your personal situation and one that
aligns with your financial goals, talk with your lender or financial professional for guidance. More home-buying tips can be found at www.FreddieMac.com. The prospect of making such a big investment can be intimidating, especially if you’re a first time homebuyer. Do your research, reach out to the professionals, stick to your budget and be sure you’re ready to take on the financial responsibilities of being a homeowner.
