INTRODUCING PARK LANE Originally opened in 1966, our Park Lane Campus is now one of the largest college campuses in Yorkshire. It’s situated in the heart of Leeds’ student district, amongst the campuses of University Centre Leeds and University of Leeds – giving students a diverse range of eateries and attractions on their doorstep. Split into two blocks, Park Lane houses our esteemed Teacher Development Centre, as well as innovative facilities. The brand-new gym in A Block improves wellbeing whilst reducing carbon emissions. Instead of using conventional power, it captures and converts students’ energy into electricity – helping to power devices in the college. Also home to Leeds Sixth Form College, B Block is another sustainable space fitted with eco-friendly solar panels, sedum plants, raised seed beds and the Natural Press Cafe where students can enjoy a barista coffee in a green space.

VOCATIONAL VS A LEVELS Vocational qualifications are practical learning programmes relating to specific careers and industries. Available at different academic levels, they are suitable for learners of all ages, and enable students to gain skills and insider knowledge through work experience. A levels are classroom-based, Level 3 qualifications. They are typically studied between the ages of 16-19, involve three or four subjects and last for a duration of two years. They are particularly ideal if you want to keep your options open before university.

WHY STUDY A VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATION? • Study something you’re passionate about • Connect with industry experts • Industry insight from guest lectures, placements, live projects and more • Gain practical skills and experience demanded by employers • Focused teaching around a chosen subject • Train in specialised

• Teaching by tutors with real industry experience • A mix of academic and skills-based modules • Different progression routes – further study, higher education, apprenticeships or employment • Courses built around industry needs • Some vocational qualifications provide more UCAS points than A levels

facilities reflecting realworld environments

APPRENTICESHIPS AT LEEDS CITY COLLEGE Fancy earning money whilst you study? An apprenticeship could be the right fit for you.

WHAT ARE APPRENTICESHIPS? Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes that combine a qualification with employment. They’re designed around business’ needs, meaning they teach crucial skills employers look for. As an apprentice, you’ll develop your skills to match industry needs through on-and off-the-job learning – and will gain a job at the end of it. Apprenticeships can provide you with better wages long term since you start a career with existing work experience. In fact, many employers actually look for work experience when recruiting their staff. Our apprenticeships are available at intermediate, advanced and higher degree levels, making them great alternatives to classroom learning. As an apprentice, you can expect: • Excellent training at one of the best UK vocational colleges • A wage and a supportive employer • Real experience and understanding of your chosen industry • The opportunity to go on to university • Recognised industry-standard qualifications • A range of progression opportunities • To benefit from better wages long term

leedscitycollege.ac.uk

| 47

You could start an apprenticeship in the following industry sectors: • Animal care

• Hair and beauty

• Business and administration

• Healthcare and science

• Catering and hospitality

• Sports

• Creative and design

• Legal, finance and accounting

• Digital and IT

• Sales, marketing and procurement

• Education and childcare • Engineering and manufacturing

• Motor vehicle, transport and logistics

HOW DO I APPLY? Apprenticeship applications run differently to other college course applications, as you must have an employer placement in place before we can enrol you. There are two main ways to secure an apprenticeship placement. The first option is to find an employer yourself. Many of our apprentices come to us after finding a local employer who wants to employ them as an apprentice. If you do this, simply let us know the details and we will contact the employer and take over from there to get you enrolled on to your apprenticeship as quickly as possible. Alternatively, we may be able to find a role for you through our recruitment matching service. We have a number of apprenticeship vacancies available on our website that you can apply to at any time. Simply follow the links, read the descriptions and complete the online application forms.
