WELCOME

Welcome to the autumn-winter 2014 edition of our What’s On guide, featuring details of our events from September 2014 to January 2015. As Director of Curriculum I am pleased to introduce this guide as it really illustrates what we want to achieve here at Leeds College of Music. We produce music, performers and producers of the very highest standard across a diverse and innovative range of genres and styles and this What’s On guide exemplifies that distinction. This season we have performances from a host of internationally-acclaimed artists, as well as the conservatoire’s ensembles and our Pop, Production, Classical and Jazz students. Complementing this rich programme of performances is a wide-ranging series of masterclasses, bringing industry expertise to the conservatoire and our students. Taking place over a variety of locations, including The Venue and the Recital Room at the conservatoire, Holy Trinity Church in Leeds and London’s Steinway Hall, the opportunities to access music of the highest calibre are numerous.

CLASSICAL –––ENSEMBLES AND RECITALS

Leeds College of Music is home to a growing number of classical ensembles, from the Chamber Orchestra to the experimental New Music Collective. Performances are often directed or conducted by special guest musicians. In November, Venezuelan conductor Natalia Luis-Bassa leads the Chamber Orchestra; and in January, Mark Heron directs the Wind Ensemble. Many of our teaching staff are renowned musicians in their own right. They perform recitals throughout the year. This season we’re proud to feature flautist Martyn Shaw with pianist Jonathan Gooing who will be performing a programme of early nineteenth century works. Additionally, our Classical students perform a recital every Thursday at 1pm at Holy Trinity Church, Leeds.

CREATIVE FRIENDS

Here in Leeds, we’re lucky enough to be associated with some of the UK’s most innovative arts organisations. Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD) is the only contemporary dance conservatoire in the UK outside London. In addition to operating as a Northern hub for contemporary dance, NSCD is home to the postgraduate performance company, Verve, as well as offering pre-vocational training with Yorkshire Young Dancers Centre for Advanced Training and hosting regular performances at The Riley Theatre. NSCD also offers intensive training courses over the summer months, as well as weekly term-time dance classes for all ages and abilities.

Northern Ballet is a powerhouse for inventive dance and the only professional ballet company in the North of England. It creates more new full-length work and tours more widely than any other UK-based company – bringing inspiring, inventive and moving performances to audiences who might not otherwise have access to worldclass dance. Overleaf is just a taste of what’s coming up at NSCD, Opera North and Northern Ballet this year.

for everyone to engage with the arts, regardless of their social or economic circumstances. Through its work and performances, Opera North strives to reflect and engage community life in the North whilst contributing unique, vital and truly original material to the world of opera.

We are in the heart of Leeds’ Quarry Hill cultural quarter – about 100 metres from St Peter’s Street, behind the BBC Yorkshire studios. We’re about 10–15 minutes’ walk from Leeds City railway station, and just over the road from Leeds City bus and coach station.
