Jazz North’s Alt-Shift-J is a pop-up one day festival that brings together young musicians from across the North of England to perform and collaborate with some of the UK’s best cutting edge professional jazz musicians and improvisors.

LCoM Chamber Orchestra Mon 25 Feb | 7:30PM

The festival will feature performances from Roller Trio and Werkha, two of the UK’s most exciting bands, alongside performances by young musicians.

J. Brahms Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68

Chris Sharkey will create and direct a new, partly improvised piece that involves all of the people involved in the project.

Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings is the setting of six English poems (Cotton, Tennyson, Blake, Jonson and Keats) first premiered by Peter Pears and Dennis Brain in 1943. This concert will feature tenor Stephen Anthony Brown, who has appeared in Purcell’s Gabriel alongside Alison Balsom and Trevor Pinnock at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, and in character roles in Tansy Davies’s Between Worlds for English National Opera. David Tollington (horn) has performed as a soloist with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and Sinfonia Viva.

F. Schubert, Schwanengesang, D957 Roderick Williams OBE, Baritone Joseph Middleton, Piano Baritone Roderick Williams makes a welcome return to Leeds Lieder. Renowned for the generosity of his musicianship, here he explores the musical nuances of Schubert’s great noncycle, Schwanengesang.

Settings of fourteen poems by Rellstab, Heine and Seidl – this richly varied collection was published posthumously and concludes with the last song Schubert ever wrote: Die Taubenpost.

Programme to include:

Join us for a showcase featuring the bands and ensembles from LCoM’s Saturday Music School.

Terry Riley, Loops for Ancient-Giant-Nude-Hairy Warriors Racing Down the Slopes of Battle Dr Damien Harron, Conductor The New Music Collective is an amplified crossover ensemble of mixed instruments, often using electronics within live performance. The ensemble explores mainly vivid, exciting recent repertoire alongside a strong focus on student composers.

Listen to pop, rock, classical, jazz and more, performed by talented young musicians, aged 9-18 years from the conservatoire’s junior department.

The Gala Concert is an annual celebration of Leeds College of Music’s distinctive approach to the training of performers, composers and producers. The grand finale to Sounds Like THIS, the Gala Concert is as spectacular visually as it is musically, and has become a highlight of the performance calendar. Featuring performances from across the entire range of programmes at the conservatoire, you can be sure to see the leading artists of the future.

Andrew Mallon studied tuba under Brian Kingsley, Robin Haggart and Ewan Easton and participated in masterclasses with James Gourlay, Jens BjørnLarsen and Kristian Steenstrup.

Andrew has played with many renowned orchestras such as the Hallé, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Skipton Camerata, working with conductors such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, James Lowe and Clark Rundell. He has also worked with brass bands including the Black Dyke Band, the Brighouse and Rastrick Band and Foden’s Band.

L. v. Beethoven, Symphony No. 2 in D, Op. 36 Ben Crick, Conductor The Leodian Concert Orchestra performs their third concert of the year, opening with Mendelssohn’s evocative and atmospheric The Hebrides Overture; a work Mendelssohn started to compose whilst looking at Fingal’s Cave from a small sailing ship. This is followed by the winner of the LCoM student concerto competition and one of Beethoven’s most diverse symphonies.

J. Haydn, Mass in Time of War Dr Martin Cook, Conductor Join us for an evening of music by one of history’s most prolific composers. The LCoM Choral Society will perform works by Haydn, including his mass setting Missa in tempore belli, along with the triumphant Achieved is the Glorious Work from his oratorio The Creation.

Steve Fishwick is widely considered one of the best jazz trumpet players to come from the UK, and is rapidly gaining a global reputation thanks to his flawless technique and his beautifully flowing, harmonically rich improvisations.

Following a sell out performance in their debut year, LCoM’s Generation Big Band returns to Seven Arts with an array of cutting edge arrangements.

The band will feature French saxophonist Baptiste Herbin and will be supported by the outstanding talent of the Saturday Music School students from LCoM.

The Generation Big Band brings together LCoM alumni who are working professionally in the music industry, existing students and up and coming young musicians who show great potential.

Hand-picked by Lang Lang, Global Ambassador of The Leeds, these three young piano protégés travel the world, sharing their talents with audiences both inside and outside the concert hall.

A world-renowned multiinstrumentalist, composer and producer, dubbed a ‘jazz maestro’ by The Guardian, Bill Laurance is also known as a founding member of Snarky Puppy.

P. I. Tchaikovsky, The Seasons, Op. 37a

Bill’s composition work extends across a range of genres. He has performed with an array of musical talents, including David Crosby, Morcheeba, Salif Keita, Bobby McFerrin and Susana Baca.

S. Rachmaninoff, 6 Moments Musicaux, Op. 16

His new album Cables is centred on Bill’s unique piano playing, embracing electronica and subtle beats and textures. This concert sees Bill perform work from the album entirely solo with a little help from some electronic friends.

Barry Douglas, Piano The internationally renowned Belfast-born pianist, Barry Douglas, pairs miniatures with more expansive works in both halves of this programme – a selection of Tchaikovsky’s seasonal vignettes contrast with his massive sonata, and Rachmaninoff’s six musical moments counterbalance Schubert’s youthfully intense A minor Sonata.

“Then shall song’s magic break free”, so wrote the great lyric poet Heinrich Heine, and it is with great delight that we invite you to join us at the 2019 Leeds Lieder Festival as we fill the city with song. The fascinating trio Clara Wieck, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms loom large across our Festival programme. The finest international stars will rub shoulders with the next generation of emerging musicians. The joy of song and poetry, and the expressive nature of the human voice will be explored and celebrated in recitals featuring Angelika Kirchschlager, Benjamin Appl, Graham Johnson, Julius Drake, Fatma Said, Joseph Middleton, Nicky Spence, Malcolm Martineau, Samuel Hasselhorn and Miah Persson.

Our End of Year Show provides the opportunity to see a wide range of great music and performances from students completing their studies with us this summer. Set across a number of performance spaces in the conservatoire, it’s a fantastic finale to the academic year.

LCoM student composition competition winning piece J. Sibelius, Symphony No. 2 in D, Op. 43 Ben Crick, Conductor A programme that delves into the folklore and mythology of the Nordic countries. The evening includes Grieg’s iconic A-minor piano concerto, paired with Sibelius’s hommage to the Finnish countryside, his brooding Symphony No. 2, which juxtaposes the natural beauty of the composer’s homeland with his contemplations on christianity, death and ultimately redemption.
