Welcome to the Arts Graduate Employment Showcase 24th March 2010 11.00 - 16.00 RLB The university will transform the Roland Levinsky building into an arts career hub on Wednesday 24 March. This Arts Graduate Employment Showcase is open to all students, graduates, members of the public and staff – it will help Faculty of Arts students and graduates get creative with their careers. We'll bring together some of the UK's most successful arts individuals, including the founder of Grazia magazine, to provide expert advice on how to flourish in the world of art. But the event will also be a showcase for emerging talent – so you'll get the chance to meet a rich blend of people and pick up practical, expert advice on how to flourish as artists in professional life. There'll be presentations, workshops, exhibition stands, employer showcases, stage productions and informal sofa sessions so that you'll get insights into how to take charge of your career. You can mix with award winning authors, national media agencies, commercial photographers, public artists, local theatres and international illustrators. There'll also be friendly business advisors available who will help turn your talent into enterprise. If you want study at postgraduate level, or if you're looking to become a teacher, then there's advice about these career paths here too. We will also have our successful and approachable alumni on hand to answer any questions you might have about opportunities after graduation. LT2 13.00 - 14.00 Creator of UK Grazia, a TV series for kids; publisher of Red magazine; journalist for Just 17; consultant to Tony Blair's government and now media agency owner and entrepreneur in Plymouth and London. If you dream of using your creative skills out in the big wide world in an exciting and relevant way, Dawn's story will inspire you. An arts graduate, Dawn persued her media ambitions and learned a whole bunch of interesting and crucial stuff on the way. Share 20 years of experience and learn how you too can get ahead in arts and media with Dawn.

Gateway 13.30 - 14.30

The session will be an illustrated lecture tracing the behind the scenes progress of one particular illustration commission. From the first piece of self promotion sent to the client, to the final artwork in print, via briefing, negotiation, roughs, artwork, invoicing etc. This will provide very practical information for a smooth-running and hazard-avoiding career as a freelancer. A session especially relevant to illustrators but also useful to others going into freelance creative work.

How to get into broadcasting

TWOFOUR will be coming in to give a presentation to students interested in a career in broadcasting.

LT2 14.45 - 15.30

Public Art‌ A Case Study Lesley Kerman has made Public Art works for The Arts Council, The Environment Agency, SUSTRANS, SAFLE for the St David's Centre in Cardiff and most recently, ZEST for the Cumberland Centre in Devonport. She will talk about how her studio practice evolved into making public art, about working with commissioners, architects and engineers, the concept of 'the artist as ethnographer' as Hal Foster puts it, and the aims, difficulties and ambitions involved in making public art.

Arts Council & Creative Economy

Nema El-Nahas, a highly successful UoP graduate, now of the Arts Council, will be holding a workshop session with Cindy Dalgleish, Director of Creative Economy for Plymouth City Development Company, on the opportunities for graduates who are pursuing careers in the creative economy sector. This will include funding opportunities, support programmes, business planning and development.

LT2 15.30 - 16.15 Postgraduate study for arts graduates The talk will cover the range of types of postgraduate courses and awards available for arts graduates, using the programmes at UoP as examples. There will be advice on fees, funding and application procedures. The session will include a Q&A opportunity.


Workshops Include: Karin Jordan I’m a creative - get me out of here! You will no doubt be thinking about how you will sustain your practice and shape your path as a creative. You may be feeling a mixture of fear and excitement. Some of you will know what you want to do, others are less sure. The key to success is to know your strengths, to anticipate where you are going and to make a plan that achieves a creative/ work balance. This free bite size workshop will enable you to recognise what strengths you bring to your future career as a creative and where you need to do some work. You'll leave with clarity on your next steps to career success. This workshop is suitable for any creative, no matter what stage of thinking you are at. Workshop facilitated by creative coach Karin Jordan who has worked with over 350 creative practitioners at all stages of their career.

Julian Evans & Glen Crust Being Authentic and Compelling in Interviews & Presentations What are you passionate about? What do you really care about in this bleak grey miserable existence? Use this workshop to reconnect with why you are an arts professional, and transform how this comes across in interviews and at cocktail parties. Participating in this interactive, performance-based workshop will help you locate your true position on your life map, and enhance your credibility with prospective colleagues and employers. Facilitated by: Jules Evans, performing arts worker, community choir director, unshaven curly-haired good egg. “DRY RUN part 6: I Would...” LOW PROFILE will be showing a new performance piece (part of their ongoing DRY RUN series which is all about preparedness, survival and working out the 'right thing to do' in situations of emergency) alongside an informal 'sofa session' with students from the UOP's Fine Art department. Gateway 11.45 - 12.45

Helen Greathead

Getting Published - Informal sofa session Children's author and editor, Helen Greathead, who has worked in the publishing industry for over 20 years, specialising in children's non-fiction. She was the original commissioning editor of the Horrible Histories series. Helen will talk about her experiences in the business, giving some useful pointers as to how to get published.

Babs Horton

Gateway 14.15- 15.30

Sofa session with the author Babs Horton is a prizewinning writer of fiction, member of the Welsh Academy and works as a Learning development advisor and associate lecture in English at the University of Plymouth.


Other Features... Vinitha Rajkumar Vinitha owns her own dance school in Plymouth and will be showcasing a routine on the stage from 12.00. After lunch there will also be an opportunity to ask any questions in an informal sofa session with her.

Peter Cade Peter owns his own photography business and will be talking about his experiences in the world of photography. He will be giving hints and tips on how to be successful in this industry and answering any other questions you may have.

Once you graduate, you automatically become part of Plymouth's alumni community. Alumni arrange sector-specific events to keep you up to date with topical issues in your field; offer an automatic postgraduate award for further study to many of our courses; and help you keep in touch with the university and with each other through a monthly e-newsletter, on-line forum and annual magazine.
