Research & Background

Design manifesto from research outcomes
Research Note | Research conducted September - December ‘14, prior to the Nepalese earthquakes that occurred in April 2015. Top 3 Natural Disaster Sub-Type Locations 2003-2013 (CRED 2009)
Kathmandu, Nepal Storms
Floods
Earthquakes
Case Study | Kathmandu | Out of 21 cities throughout the world in similar seismic hazard zones, Kathmandu is the worst rated in terms of the impact an earthquake would have on its population. | Inadequate infrastructure, lack of adherence to building regulations, a high population density and an insufficient water supply all account for Kathmandu’s vulnerability.

Saving Lives And Saving Money. Building community resilience is now a major focal point for many NGOs. ‘Every £1 invested in reducing disaster risk is equivalent to £4 saved in emergency response and reconstruction’. British Red Cross (2014)
Why 2-Way Radios? To achieve these, communication is key to a successful and coherent response.
Training for local first responders is key to the preservation of life.
Light search and rescue is a key activity in the immediate aftermath of a natural disaster.
Providing emergency healthcare and establishing a field medical clinic are key.

| Tasks included organising, collecting and collating work from over 150 students across 4 courses, to be in one joint book. 1,500 copies printed for various exhibitions throughout the UK.
Grids were provided to ensure the book maintains visual continuity throughout.
| ‘How to’ and example documents were produced to inform people how they could submit work for the book, across multiple platforms including Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. (See below & right). InDesign | How to package your project To help us create and edit the book efficiently, we would like you to package your projects for us using InDesign. Use the template and the ‘example book pages’ pdf guide provided to assist you when placing your images within the document guidelines. Use the ‘Rectangle Frame Tool’ (keyboard shortcut ‘F’) to draw your image boxes to the structure you’d like, (snapping to the guides provided). Then, by selecting each frame drawn, you can use the place tool (File: Place OR keyboard shortcut ‘cmd Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Step 4
D’ (mac) or ‘Ctrl D’ (Windows)) to select and insert your desired images into each individual frame. All images must conform to the guides provided, as documented in the ‘example book pages’ pdf. Once you have placed the images appropriately, you need to ‘package’ your file. See the instructions below to learn how to do this. Once you have done this send the entire folder to covid2015@gmail.com. Thanks you for co-operation.
Ensure these are ticked.

The Book | Design
| The book was designed to ensure that student work was prominent and quick and easy to navigate. | Coloured card pages were used to separate the courses into 3 sections: Interior Design, Product Design and Automotive and Transport Design. This enabled quick navigation between the courses. | The card pages contained a brief description of the course in that section and a student directory for efficient navigation.
18|52
Sponsors & Content
19|52
| Meetings with potential sponsors were coordinated to secure funding and aid the printing of the degree show books, in addition to other materials. | Book spine (bottom left) | Student content on grid (top right) | Information and student images, clear, legible and easy to navigate (bottom right).

GlucoTab Dispenser
In association with Diabetes.co.uk Brief Client Requirements To design a portable GlucoTab dispenser for use by type 2 diabetes patients to enable them to maintain blood-sugar levels and prevent hypoglycaemic episodes.
Hypo Episode Prevention And Control | Type 2 diabetes sufferers need to maintain adequate sugar levels (4-7 mmol/l) to aid the prevention of hypoglycaemia. A hypo can occur when blood glucose levels fall below 4mmol/l. | Symptoms of an impending hypo include; feeling dizzy, hungry, sweaty or a change in mood, trembling and lack of concentration. | Glucose tablets (GlucoTabs) are used to maintain blood sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes patients often take 1-2 tablets per day. In the event of a hypo, the patient should be given 2-3 GlucoTabs to quickly increase sugar levels.
