Mule Kick for flute choir
Lee Hartman
Mule Kick Duration approx. 3:30 Piccolo Flute 1, 2, 3, 4 Alto Flute (in G) Bass Flute (conductor needs a whip/slapstick alternately a clap at the end is permissible but sooooooooo lame) Mule Kick was commissioned by my colleague Frank Fenley for the 2016 University of Central Missouri Honor Wind Symposium. With this in mind, I wanted to create a fun piece that incorporated an aspect of UCM culture. I settled upon the mascot, a bright red mule/jenny. Using the folk-tune “Woah Mule” as a basis for this fanfarish fantasia, the titular mule becomes more and more agitated as the piece progresses through a series of rip-roaring variations. Performance Notes Straight line glissandos are to be performed by rolling in or out and should not involve fingering changes. Wavy line glissandos are to be fingered and if the distance between pitches it too small for effective fingering changes, directional pitch bending is encouraged. There are a variety of extended techniques used throughout the piece. Care should be taken to perform these as readily as the more traditional portions and parts. I would recommend wearing something other than heels if performing the foot stomp parts. To play up the inherent humor and whimsy within the piece, the fast tempos should be on the side of careening off the tracks, dynamics should be exaggerated, and please please please feel free to move, smile, and sway throughout. Mule Kick is meant to be serious fun. Doubling of the C flute parts is encouraged but not necessary. Copyright Ⓒ 2016 Ragnarok Press, ASCAP. All Rights Reserved. www. leehartmanmusic.com
