“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to.” – Jim Jarmusch

he city sits on stolen land. The environment we know today is vastly different to what it was 150 years ago. A time when indigenous land rights were not addressed – hence land is stolen, and re-appropriated to an ever expanding machine that we call Melbourne. The land was forced to be planned as a town and laid out in a grid pattern by Robert Hoddle due to the expansion of colonisation. The city’s motto is “Vires acquirit eundo” which means “She gathers strength as she goes.” Melbourne City 37°48’49”S 144°57’47”E

edwood forest is a mix of human intervention and a natural spectacle, in East WarWburton. Over 200 Californian Redwood trees lie in a perfect grid formation, dominating the landscape and the indigenous flora. It demonstrates the scientific knowledge and availability of seed at that time, when the understanding of mountain ash regeneration was not well developed and the attitude towards revegetation with exotic tree species reflected nineteenth century cultural attitudes towards aesthetic plantings.

Both Redwood Forest and Melbourne City share one distinctive quality.

he grid serves as an organisational system that suppresses characteristics of the natural world. The grid suppresses movement in space. We can only move left, right, backwards, frontwards, up and down. As technology advances, so can our patterns of movement. Movement is a fundamental aspect of everyday life. It enables us to stay connected to the physical world. Imagery, musical dissonance, banal day to day life induces a state of catatonia we do not realise. The uncanny pattern of the grid that defines the city becomes an instrument of preconceived emancipation. It is the symbol of fabrication - the manifestation of a completely banal, artificial structure that dominates the natural landscape, hence regulating individual movement.

Photographs are a way of imprisoning reality…One can’t possess reality, one can possess images–one can’t possess the present but one can possess the past. -Susan Sontag

T

o collect photographs is to collect the world. Photography is commonly regarded as an instrument for knowing things. It became possible to apprehend more by seeing (through microphotography and teledetection), they changed seeing itself, by fostering the idea of seeing for seeing’s sake. However a photograph is just an image created by light falling on a photosensitive surface. It is perhaps the most mysterious of all objects that make up, and thicken the environment we recognise. They are experienceS captured. To photograph is to appropriate the thing photographed. It means putting oneself in a certain relation to the world that feels like knowledge and

therefore power. An ability to take something away and make it yours. Photographs are artefacts, but their appeal is that they also seem, in a world littered with photographic relics, to have the status of found objects unpremeditated slices of the world. The process of stealing an object from reality revolves around taking many photos of it by moving around it, allowing a 60% overlap coverage to work, known as photogrammetry. Photogrammetry allowed us to steal an existing object from reality and reproject it into our fantasy lands, giving new meaning and contexts to these objects. Primarily stealing multiple trees from the Redwood Forest and rebuilding it in Unreal Engine.

ecordings from these sites were hence focused around moments in time through a space – through a threshold, such as through the doors of the tram in the city, or the motion of walking through the forest. I wanted to capture our repetitive behaviours that we do not consciously think about. The ambient sounds that the architecture that surrounds us today reduces us to a state of subconscious repetition. This inexpressive

architecture is a phantasmagoria of the gears of the city we ideate as a machine - where mass production produces infinite urban decor. These gears use movement as a means of individualisation. Where transportation lies on the ground (2D) and in the air (3D). With population rising, we need to look at higher dimensions of travel to work more effectively without escaping the organisational structure we like to impose onto ourselves.

Writer/Director Richard Ayoade’s re-imagined and modernized Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novella The Double, is a pure artistic vision. The dark tones are only enhanced by the light notes of humor throughout the film. Ayoade’s avant garde, experimental style and minimalist set design create an ominous aesthetic. Visuals of the film were centered around lowlight colours, desaturated and nearly monochromatic creating a feeling of intensity and anxiety. Each scene focused around creating a feeling of trepidation.

I seek to incorprate the moral of this film into my concept, by relating the stolen element to it’s original. Making these elements interdependent of one another.

THE 4TH "As you yourself, superior to all Flat/and forms, combine many Circles in One, so doubtless there is One above you who combines many Spheres in One Supreme Existence, surpassing even the Solids of Spaceland. And even as we, who are now is Space, look down on Flatland and see the insides of all things, so of a certainty there is yet above us some higher, purer region, whither thou dost surely purpose to lead me... some yet more spacious Space, some more dimensionable. Dimensionality, from the vantage-ground of which we shall look down together upon the revealed insides of Solid things, and where thine own intestines, and those of thy kindred Spheres, will lie exposed to the view of the poor wandering exile from Flatland, to whom so much has already been vouchsafed." - Edwin A. Abbott: Flatland, A Romance of Many Dimensions The narrator, A. Square, a two-dimensional being, muses to his three dimensional companion the possibility of greater dimensions and how being brought into them would change his perspective.

steal and reproject a interpretation of time.

The fourth dimension, according to mathematical theory, is a spatial expansion of the third and physical dimension. It expands the current space into a direction perpendicular to those currently known. It is not left and right, nor forward and back, nor up and down. It is a new, undefined direction. The w direction. The fourth dimension cannot be occupied or seen while in three-dimensional space making the fourth dimension impossible to understand.

Each progression of different dimensional objects is made by moving one dimension parallel to itself in a new perpendicular direction. When a four-dimensional object enters our threedimensional world, it does not take on its true form but appears, in fact, as its three-dimensional counterpart. This is similar to how a three-dimensional object appears two-dimensional when crossing a two-dimensional world. Can we steal elements from this measily 3rd dimension and reproject an enhanced version into the 4th Dimension? Can we recreate the world we know today to allow for flexible movement meanwhile still conforming to the grid that we love to superimpose onto the natural landscape?

Sudden silence breaks away from the repetitive nature of the soundscape creating a feeling of preconceived emancipation. Similar to our feelings of comfort when imposed by a grid and moving away into the suburbs that diverts away from that organisational structure. The sound of the “everyday” plays and listeners are taken back to the banal day to day life.

Sound scape stops abruptly, leaving listeners at a cliffhanger, anticipating what is more to come and what would have happened next

Sounds of boarding onto the tram provides listeners, primarily those familiar with Melbourne’s tram network, a sense of reassurance that they are in a place they know.

VIEWING THE ALTERNATE DIMENSION

It becomes nearly impossible to discern the subjects within the 4th dimension, however it is possible to see it’s shadows. In this way, it becomes possible to regenerate and extrapolate what these subjects appear like in the 4th dimension. These stolen elements from reality and from elsewhere had been sheared, twisted, self intersected and exploded, creating a completely new environment within the forest. The forest has hence expanded in size and in time.

MOVEMENT AROUND THE 4TH DIMENSION DEMONSTRATED IN FILM

Movement is enhanced through the 4th dimension, providing people the ability to move through time and space, hence intersecting solids, and moving through as replications of themselves through portals that open to the higher dimensions.

lion guardians as representations in the 4th dimension

The manifestation of human intervention in an alternate dimension. Visualising the 4th dimension as a 2d representation.

This not something we can comprehend, but we can obtain visual cues of something of the lower dimension and postulate what it could look like 4th dimensionally. My intension is to steal something that I can not physically possess, by capturing and timestamping its lower dimensional counterpart and rebuilding. The grid now only exists as the shadows of the fourth dimension.

SUPERIMPOSITION OF THE GRID

T

he fourth dimension is a spatial experience that can be understood visually in augmented environments. Photographs and virtual reality may allow us to see and feel what this dimension could be like, and how we can move through it. As photographs capture time, virtual reality creates an interactive environment. The WarBurton Redwood Forest becomes a palimpsest of an organisational structure in which the original grid layout is obscured and put into new contexts by the addition of the new dimension.

4 DIMENSIONAL CARPARK GUARDIAN FACADE

The four-dimensional objects has a three-dimensional shadow like a projection. It’s projection will appear as only another solid. With the addition of a fourth dimension, closed rooms become accessible and hidden spaces become viewable. This play between spatial dimensions creates new relationships in architecture hence enhancing our movement. The transition between two dimensions, can reveal qualities of the grid that may be otherwise hidden

REIMAGINING THE FOREST IN THE 4TH DIMENSION

There is a notion of the grid system of trees intercepted but what looks like a tree that fades in and out of view. Feeling the grid provides a sense of stability for people, however having that visual cue is not enough to counter the vertigo we may feel when moving inter dimensionally. ID: 913999 |

HOW DID WE GET HERE? THE APPENDIX kitbashing the fourth dimension

We have become accustomed to focusing on the end result of architecture as if that’s all there is to it. The final stage of the creative arc is presented as the entire thing itself, and something valuable in our experience is lost.

K

itbashing was integral to my concept as it enabled the exploration of multiple forms that create an ambiguous definition

between dimensions, perspectives and object. I wanted to create a space within the forest, and in a way, the forest becomes the object. Incorporating banal city and factory buildings blurs the line between the two contexts by superimposing them into each other as they are both organised THE CITY IN THE FOREST

in a grid form. I've sheared them onto multiple angles to trick our senses of perspectives.

THE AESTHETICS

P

icture frames remain as a representation

of the 2nd dimension, interconnected by the cables that hold the forest together. This

entangled cable was created by the protagonist who loses himself in the search for the 4th dimension. It holds the picture frames, cameras and projectors together in the narrative.

T E S S E R A AND C T REFLECTIONS PERSPECTIVES I began the form of the forest with the tesseract as it is the easiest 4th dimensional object I could create. However it was difficult to incorporate the forest into the hypercube as the forest and the cube have two very juxtaposing elements. This created a separation between the 4th dimension and the 3rd dimension. 42

GH REPLICATION I looked at projecting the tree 6 directions, focusing mainly on the trunk of the tree. I added a twisted element to it to create depth and break the visual connection throughout the forest. At a small scale (when standing in the forest) it becomes difficult to comprehend the form of the trees as they are so large.

T H E F OTIME R ESTAMPING ST I explored the language of time stamp by using the actual trees and placing them onto different levels. This is linked to my idea of photography and capturing time as the forest acts as an object overlayed onto one another like sediments in a rock. I also imposed the original forest through this new layout. ID: 913999 |

T

he process of creating the main diagram involves overlaying different views from rhino and post processing it in photoshop. Overlaying it and blending it allowed me to play with our senses of perception. I further added a library of stolen elements onto the diagram.

Creating a pseudo 4th dimension as it is impossible to represent the 4th dimension as a 2 dimensional projection. Confusing the viewer becomes integral to my presentation and keeping it very brief so that viewers cannot discern the form.

1. the environment was first created within rhinoceros 6. I kitbashed different elements of buildings, cables, photographs and frames to create a homoenous object

2. I then imported the fbx files into unreal engine and began texturising and adding materiality to these objects. In particular, the glassy wood material was created for the forest.

46

3. I manipulated lighting and post processing effects to create an ambient environment. I experimented with emissivity and opacity throughout the site to create an ambiguous space that can be perceived differently through different perspectives.

4. Exported videos from unreal engine 4 into premier pro and overlaid the soundscape that had been created in FLStudio. Using effects such as multiply, overlaying and crossfading to create seamless transitions that make viewers confused of their motion and position within the forest.

REFLECTION

T

he unit focuses on stealing and it's exploitation in a trivialised form by the web

2.0 elite - marginalised as appropriation and sampling. It explores the movement of information as it is being uploaded, multiplied and dispersed across the internet, absorbing new meaning and context with each new copy. Notions of here and now dissolving due to the accessibility of this information. Previously, to be ‘here’ meant being nowhere else in that moment – our physical experience was rooted in both time and place. Today, our devices connect us instantly to all of humanity’s knowledge, and virtual reality exposes us to unexplored territory. Therefore, I seeked to explore our movement in physical space as a concept rather than our movements online, stealing from reality and enhancing them in a higher dimension. We explored context, gravity sketch, perceptions of scale, photogrammetry, music sampling, film and kitbashing, all the while manipulating stolen elements, whether from reality or from online. I've gained some understanding of design methods through applications of virtual reality and film making; meanwhile developing an understanding of the creative use of 2d and representational techniques to portray something impossible to be

comprehended by us mere 3 dimensional dwellers. The first half of the first week revolved around working collaboratively in a team and as a group to harness concepts, ideas, and stealing elements from reality, however later diverged to individual work to further explore our individual concepts. With a short time-frame for this project, I feel that it is impossible to fully resolve my narrative. I would have liked to explore the 4th dimension more deeply and actually create a VR experience that simulate it with the use of animation in Unreal Engine - however my current skills lack as I've only learnt the software recently. Conceptually I would have liked to explore the possibility of physically moving within this space rather than just perceiving it through virtual reality - however that is an impossible task for today's technology. All things considered I am content with what I have produced. I am greatful to be mentored under Thomas Wing-Evans and Mond Qu and have learnt a lot from them, however I wish we had more class discussions about concepts and ideas rather than just jumping straight into kitbashing and whatnot, as the first week was not spent more productive than I would have liked. I also would have appreciated more in depth critiques and comments about where I was heading with my final presentation. LEELEE CHEA 19.07.2019
