I was born in Sakai (near Osaka), Japan and raised in Michigan. I moved to Minnesota in 1983 to study with the late Zen teacher, Dainin Katagiri Roshi. I make functional pottery. My work is influenced by traditional Chinese, Korean, and Japanese ceramics, especially everyday pots , that were sometimes chosen for tea ceremony. I moved to Mashiko, Japan in 1999 to study pottery with National Living Treasure, Tatsuzo Shimaoka. After completing a 3 year apprenticeship in 2003, I built a wood fired kiln and set up a studio and worked as a studio potter in Mashiko. I moved back to Minneapolis in 2007 and currently work in my studio at home. I fire in wood, soda, gas reduction, raku and am exploring slipware. “We can make our minds so like still water that beings gather about us that they may see, it may be, their own images, and so live for a moment with a clearer, perhaps even with a fiercer life because of our quiet.” --W.B. Yeats
