As part of their continuing commitment to encourage more young people into the facilities management industry, Integral UK’s Business Development Manager, Mark Whittaker, delivered a guest lecture to final year degree students at Liverpool John Moores University’s School of the Built Environment in December. The University, situated in the centre of Liverpool, is currently the twelfth largest in the UK, with a student population or around 24,000. Mark was invited by Senior Lecturer, Nazali Mohd Noor, who as well as teaching the students, is currently working on a research paper on BS11000 Standard for Collaborative Working within the Facilities Management sector. Mark Whittaker explains Integral’s involvement, “Having already worked with Naz on his BS11000 research project, I was delighted to be asked to share my experience and provide practical insights to the University students. Facilities Management is a relative young, dynamic and exciting industry to work in, is forecast to grow by 15% by 2015 and we are keen to encourage others to work in the sector and to contribute and develop their skills. The lecture also focused on how contractors must deliver customer specific solutions and on the increased importance of social media” Part of Mark’s lecture also contained the opinions of some high profile people within the industry. He adds, “I wanted a broad spectrum of opinions and contacted some respected industry figures for their thoughts on what attracted them to working in the Facilities Management Sector and the challenges and opportunities facing the industry in the future. Their input was fantastic.” “We recognize there is a continuing skills shortage impacting our industry and Integral are keen to make a positive contribution to encouraging people to join the industry and help solve the shortage.”
Nazali Mohd Noor commented afterwards, “I invited Mark to share his FM wisdom in front of my final year undergraduate students, where he delivered absolutely fantastic lecture about FM procurement. The students enjoyed the session and provided him a very positive feedback about his session.” Integral currently employ 80 apprentices each year across the UK and also work closely with Barnados on a mentoring scheme with young people. Within Liverpool Integral’s customers include the University of Liverpool and National Museums Liverpool. Pictured: Mark with Senior Lecturer, Nazali Mohd Noor, of Liverpool John Moores University.
Mark plans to deliver another guest lecture for the students of Leeds Metropolitan University in May 2012.

As a national property maintenance provider, Integral UK Limited have many years experience of working in partnership with a number of Public Sector Bodies and Local Authorities of varying size. Through our specialist property maintenance knowledge and technical expertise, we have worked in partnership with them to: • • • • •
Achieve value for money, continuous improvement and innovation in their asset management strategies. Optimise equipment performance and extend its natural life. Reduce energy consumption, including providing sustainable Lighting and Energy solutions, Energy Surveys and staff education programmes. Support them on capital replacement programmes, using our in-house installations capability. Carry out asset verification surveys, asset conditions surveys and five year maintenance plans.
Our goal is to provide a cutting edge service provision, whilst initially working closely with customers to understand their specific and unique needs and then delivering a bespoke property management service which meets these needs and helps achieve their organisational goals.
Support to the Local Economy
We understand customers prefer locally based engineers to be working at their buildings and our scale and strong self-delivery capability (92%) mean we employ people that live and work within the same locality. We employ local engineers to ensure that we possess the best local knowledge and can respond rapidly to any reactive task. By sending the same engineers, they also gain familiarity of the premises and staff, as well as the equipment. -=
We also understand the importance of supporting the local economy and have deals in place with the local material and plant hire supply chain, ranging from local independent suppliers to national multi-site operators. We also look to use local sub-contractor partners, as and when required. The benefit to our customers is that through our buying power, we are able to purchase materials and hire plant at very competitive prices. In turn these savings are passed on to our customers. Competitive prices are also aligned to excellent customer service; for example opening hours which suit our and our customers business needs, good levels of shelf stock and the speedy delivery of ordered parts.
Investing in the Future There is currently a skills shortage within our industry and we work with our customers to encourage people into a career in property maintenance, including running various apprentice training programmes. These benefits the local community by maintaining a sustainable local workforce and ensuring that trade skills are passed on to the future generation.
In addition to our apprentices schemes we also work with Barnardo’s to help homeless people gain work experience and allow them to integrate back into work. We have arrangements with Barnardo’s in various city centres across the UK, to offer young people the opportunity to get involved in “hands on” training in a wide variety of skills and areas.

Just like to say that your electrician Don is a very helpful guy. We had an issue with the heating to Block D last Monday, he happened to be on site and when I approached him he got involved straight away replacing the overheated cable in the boiler house. He also then was happy to take a look at Block F and provide guidance on putting a scope of works together for pricing. Please pass on my thanks Denis Keaskin, Area Engineer, National Grid Property (January 2012)
“Can I just say how helpful and friendly the two engineers were. They were efficient and very helpful doing extra jobs whilst they were here.” Marny Wallace, Estates & Facilities NHS Airedale, Bradford and Leeds (December 2011)
“A.E. Robb & Associates have worked with Integral UK Limited in a professional capacity carrying out planned preventative maintenance together with reactive first line support at ProStrakan Group Limited in Galashiels, Scotland since 2006. We have no hesitation in recommending Integral’s services as we have always found them to be exceptionally flexible and conscientious in carrying out their duties. Any issues encountered have always been dealt with in a professional and cost effective manner.” Craig Powell, Senior Consultant, A.E. Robb Associates (June 2011)
Customer Testimonials “The Integral engineer Lee O’Brian has been a major factor in our good relationship with Integral. He always goes above and beyond what we expect and has identified many issues that have saved us money via the defect rectification process. His positive, can-do attitude mirrors the culture we demand at The Hepworth Wakefield and a major reason for the positive perception we have of Integral. Although we have only had one year in partnership with Integral, we have already seen enough that convinces us that Integral will be a long-term partner for The Hepworth Wakefield.” Roy Taylor, Estates Manager The Hepworth Wakefield (August 2011)
“We have just had a wash-up meeting about our event on 2nd July and one thing which has come out of it is how brilliant Andy and John were on Saturday. Nothing fazed them and nothing was too much trouble. They certainly were strong contributors to the smooth running of the day and the team here want to put their thanks on record.” Sue Ellis, Assistant to the General Manager Carlisle Racecourse Company Limited (July 2011)
“Since the contract started I have been very impressed with the way Integral have gone about their business. They have demonstrated a technical expertise and health & safety awareness that is second to none. I have no hesitation in recommending this contractor.” Alan Armstrong , Senior Building Surveyor, Renfrewshire Council (March 2011)
