Virasat. With a different cultural identity and mark at every step of our vast country, some has been preserved and identified in its roots. The old city of Ahmedabad is now recognized U N E S C O heritage city. Heritage is timeless, it develops and grows on those who stay embodied in that environment and culture. With the slow progression as the inspiration, let us weave our virasat and adorn it with pride.

Feminism. The fight for equal rights and treatment has been there forever. From India’s freedom struggle and Gandhiji’s swadeshi movement, to the 1970s feminist art by Judy Chicago, we’re all looking to be free, equal and liberated. The feminist movement started with equal rights for women grew to issues including gender and body identity. The movement grows and strengthens people, similar to how the rough humble Khaddar weaved the Indian subcontinent together to fight oppression.

Slow Food. Food is a personal process. The gajar ka halwa, daal makhni and the biryani resonate with Indian households. They take time, they’re nourished, at each step a flavour is added, whether it is the elaichi or the mirch. It grows on the cook, the host and the guest of the food. The noodle-in-a-cup is a convenient food mass produced in one go in a factory nothing personal about it. While slow food is passed on from the khet to the plate, people are involved at each stage in a personal way - whether it is handpicking the right produce or stirring the ingrediants in an earthen pot. True for textiles, where the cotton is handpicked, hand-spun and woven into a fabric which gets tailored to a personal size.

Conscious Fitoor. There was a time, when outdoors was how we lived as humans, wandering from place to place. Even before Gandhi thought of unifying the nation through the humble khaddar, he wandered across the nation in the most limited resources like a wanderer in the search of truth. Travellers are always seeking experiences that take them closer to life. The pure, rough white Khaddar got Gandhi closer to life and helped him live in all ‘rough’ situations.

An inspiration for present times are the offbeat natural locations like Barot, Himachal Pradesh. Untouched by urbanization and relishing in its raw beauty. Colours of the skies, greens and the rustic living areas are elements of the colour story.

Urban Kheti. Urban farming or gardening talks about the essence of growing your own grain and food - living a conscious lifestyle synchronized with the urban city environment by sowing seeds of locally available foods in your own backyard, balcony and living spaces. Without any chemical intervention, the food is pure and organic, just like how Khadi - pure, personal, raw and luxuriously as it was exported.

Shunya Waste. Zero waste is catching up on the west, in India however, we’ve lived that for ages our villages, communities and worlds revolved around reusing and repurposing. Our textiles have been our identity as communities, and also been inheritance. The old saree of an ancestor meant a lot. Even the garments that went old and torn were then patched on to make a quilt which still kept the aesthetics in mind, color-pattern-texture of different garments put together in a composition or a even a bag to carry to the office.

Kulhad. When humans started living on the earth, they sought to take materials from the earth and use them to the fullest. Clay is one of those elements, humans began carving it to make utensils to cook, drink and eat. The nutrients from the soil added another essence into the food, missing from the melanine utensils we use today. Kulhad is a small utensil which is made for tea and beverages. The craft of making a kulhad needs deep meditative practice, just like spinning the charkha for the Khaddar yarn.

Yog. Meditative consciousness and the act of making cloth is similar. Yoga is about being conscious about the moment and observing everything in your surroundings, being actively moving without being involved in it. While spinning yarn, you need to be consciously aware and while weaving, active. What’s inspiring about yoga is the intangible awareness and the tangible movements. These movements when captured and weaved into cloth, makes it one meaningfully timeless attire!

Rang. We have three colour receptors - red, green and blue and all the shades we see revolve around these. The nature however has diverse shades which we have defined under these - the mantis shrimp however with about twelve receptors can see many more colours and shades. Nature’s shades should be obtained from their pigments itself, as they are nurtured slowly, when a flower blooms from the seed or when a fruit grows out of it - it is strong while slowly pigmented, with no interference from the ‘industrial world’ just the way the Khadi economy would’ve worked.

Diversity. India is a diverse country, every kilometre with a different dialect and culture. The Khaddar unified us as individuals from diverse cultures. There were many diversities even in Khadi, whether it was the parsi communities experimenting with European silhouttes, women keeping their aesthetic priorities in mind - using craft techniques like embroidery, and also came the development of Khadi silk. There was dyeing in different colours marking our religious beliefs and although these were controversial points in the freedom struggle, they truly show individuality and diversity in our vividh country of India.
