Plan Overview

• Services and facilities (more student services, green spaces, active life).

Some of the main Strategies that achieve the goals of the plan for the remaking of the campus include:

• Relationship with the surrounding community (becoming a welcoming campus and building a strong relationship between the campus and the community) Full details of the engagement process including the relevant stakeholders.

Over the coming years and decades, the guidelines in this plan will help inspire the entire university community to imagine and work to improve the campus and the city, including the students, faculty, staff, and visitors who enjoy the University of Khartoum. Your reading of the campus master plan and your engagement with the University of Khartoum on these emerging initiatives allows you to be a part of building and shaping these possibilities.

As urban designers, our vision is to develop the University of Khartoum campus according to a remaking approach using principles and guidelines for the participation of decision makers.

The new master plan for the University of Khartoum campus, the Central Complex, represents an important component in charting the future course of the university in achieving its desired goals. These goals are to contribute to the improvement of the city of Khartoum, and to pursue excellence in student, faculty and staff experience, interfaculty engagement, and the physical environment of the university while preserving the historical identity of Gordon Memorial College.

• Education (design spaces that align with this goal).

Serving as a collective starting point, it provides guidance and context for future development at the University of Khartoum while allowing flexibility to adapt to changing needs, including new opportunities.

• Accessibility and mobility (parking concerns, traffic congestion, pedestrian safety).

• Safety and security (especially at night, as many students are on campus at very late hours).

Focusing on the future is key. Students, teaching, learning, research, creative and scientific activities make valuable contributions to our societies today. As the University develops, this Campus Master Plan represents the guiding principles and possibilities for the future development of the University's facilities, buildings, properties and spaces over the coming decades. , suggesting that the time period we need to examine spans generations of students, faculty and staff, as well as community leaders. The plan recognizes ambition and efforts to embrace cultural diversity, equality and inclusion, and most importantly, the campus master plan complements and advances the priorities of the University of Khartoum academic plan.

• Building and space issues while preserving historical identity (existing space, potential sites for building science and new sports facilities building, the need to expand the College of Engineering and rebuild service spaces).

The planning of the Khartoum city is that of Doxiadis, most of the blocks have preserved their shape and it is considered a fine Grid, there are not many intermittent blocks. The connectivity has decreased because there are secondary streets that have been added to necessity, there are also streets that have turned in one direction. The permeability is high in this region, but in terms of the legibility, the historical monuments have not changed, as they e xisted from the time of the colonizer, which gave the identity of the city

The block did not maintain its shape well and became scattered. Access maintained the main streets, but with the expansion of the university and the addition of other colleges, new streets were added.

The permeability is very low, especially in the eastern area where the Faculty of Science and the Western area where is Faculty of Engineering.

The cross street is linked to the three vertical streets and extends to include most parts of the university campus and public areas. There is no legibility , the buildings that have been added recently have reduced the accessibility rate and the identification of the boundaries between colleges. Urban Block

Since long time ago

The university campus consists of two main streets, and the streets branch into internal sub-streets that start from the engineering gate and continue to the eastern squarethis street is called the main street - and the activity street that starts from the activity gate and intersects with Main Street -

Historically, Main Street starts from the main library, and until this moment remains the artery of the university campus - they made the library a main center from which the rest of the internal streets of the campus branch off

Note The function of each street may change with the passage of time - as mentioned previously, Main Street had started from the Main Gate - but after the urban expansion and the establishment of engineering colleges, the flow of students and workers through the engineering gate increased and the activity of campus streets Campus streets now Nile Street

After studying and analyzing, we shed light on the question who owns the street inside the university campus, pedestrians or cars?

After the analysis, the study proved that vehicles have the right to own the street, and pedestrians are a secondary component within the university campus, but in fact the opposite is true. This resulted in problems in urban design, and individuals did not feel safe walking on the roads designated for them. Therefore, they must have design solutions and laws that restore the right to own property again.

The college also has plenty of perennial trees, which are characterized by abundant shades that create a semi-silhouette environment to meet the needs of the external sessions, which in turn can be reformulated or added to their design to perform the intended role with the addition of aesthetic touches to the design of the inner courtyard and make it more attractive and distinguished for the service aspects of the courtyard B- Axis and movement

Without the specifics of its origins, the school of architecture establishes a strong relation to the English architecture of the 60's. The articulated structural systems together with the brick envelope provide an expressive architecture in which the components and the details are an integrated part. And again this building establishes most interesting historical references this building is conceptually developed. It's type responds to the climate, the orientation and the life style of its users. The interplay of the materials-stone, brick and wood define one of the very interesting lines of historical Sudanese architecture.

RECOMENDATION Center Campus university of Khartoum 01 54

The entrances are sufficient as the campus is divided into zones, but the entrances and gates must be reoperated to reduce the density of vehicles and the space in the gates that are currently operating and also to create vitality in the dead streets.

The occasional street is the separator of the northern part from the southern part, which we note that there is a high accessibility, so the northern part needs a clear access to the Nile Street, as it is directed to separate pedestrian traffic from cars and it is recommended to make pedestrian paths.

In the College of Science, there are completely closed buildings, which are historical buildings with an architectural character that reflects the historical identity. They must be maintained, reused and occupied. They can be used as spaces for academic creativity, which creates investment opportunities.Serviceswere not distributed in proportion to the size of the colleges, and new buildings were also added, which impeded connectivity and increased the access distance. Paying attention to the building materials used to be in line with the architectural character and historical identity. There are also buildings where there is no sense of enclosure, such as the buildings of the Faculty of Science.

The open spaces in the College of Law need to be redesigned, where students can sit and practice various activities, which increases social and cultural cohesion, as well as adds aesthetic and architectural touches that reflect the identity of the place

Center Campus university of Khartoum RECOMENDATION02 55

In the Faculty of Engineering of Open Spaces and the green spaces are not well employed and part of them became barking, in the Faculty of Arts there are open spaces in which a hall was built from materials that are inconsistent with the identity. And to repaint Parking

There are small buildings built on open spaces areas at the Faculty of Sciences and Faculty of Economics, so this led to the deformation of the open spaces as an outlet and obstruction of wind movement and Ventilation. also The southern court in the Faculty of Sciences closed with fence and no one allowed to sit on it.

Open spaces and public realm

With the increase in the number of cars for students, administrators and employees, and there was no clear plan for the future expansion of parking, this led to the exploitation of open spaces and internal streets, which created congestion in those streets. We point out the opening of outlets for parking on the northern side of Nile Street. And the spaces designated for parking on the southern side need to be re-paved and identified and linked to the pedestrian walkways, and designed in terms of sidewalks, trees and shade and designed in a way that gives comfort

The urban design strategy aims to design a new urban environment by removing and replacing buildings or repairing and restoring them if possible. That is, the attention in this approach is focused on reviving the historical, cultural and aesthetic value of the campus components, including its buildings, in addition to paying attention to the functional and economic value

The architectural level deals with the design and functional aspects of old buildings, and since preserving the urban fabric is the first goal of the rehabilitation process, so that these principles achieve the preservation of the identity and authenticity of heritage buildings. By preserving the structure, which is in good condition with restoration and improvement. The function of these buildings can be changed after Rehabilitation, which enhances the existential and heritage value of these historical buildings, thus ensuring the continuity of its use for a longer period

With the recording and documentation of the constituent elements of the facility by photography, photogrammetry or video, with a plan to restore these elements using drawings.
