Amsterdam’ s Chalmers Mill project is nearing an end

As work began, the historic Chalmers Mill in Amsterdam, NY showed the signs that more than 20 years of vacancy and neglect brought. by Jon M. Casey It won’t be long before one of Amsterdam, New York’s more prominent reminders of times past, will be gone forever and a grass covered, empty lot will take its place. Amsterdam’s Chalmers Knitting Mill demolition and site restoration project is scheduled for completion by early spring. With the final demolition work currently underway, the workers from Ritter & Paratore Contracting, Inc. will soon be able to say, “Another job well done!” According to Site Superintendant, Steve Brooks, the challenges of taking down the Chalmers Mill have been routine for the most part, but have offered interesting insights into the construction methods from a bygone era. Chalmers Mill, having been built over several years during the early 1900s, was primarily composed of two structures, an older brick facility and a newer, larger concrete building that towered seven stories above the nearby Mohawk River. The project was awarded on Jan. 4, 2011, and after some initial, unforeseen delay, the work began June 1, 2011. Brooks said that the first priority at the site was to take care of the hazardous waste abatement and soil remediation that goes along with the demolition of older buildings of this kind. “We had MCES Environmental remove two existing 20,000 gallon fuel tanks and our sister company, Midlantic Environmental, Inc. did the asbestos and lead abatement for us,” he said. “Once those two phases of the project were done, we have been proceeding at a very good pace.” The removal of the hardwood flooring has been especially interesting, primarily because of its strength and durability over the years. Brooks said that in order for the crews to effectively remove the 4-inch thick, heavy wooden material, they needed to lift a skid steer loader up to each floor with a crane, so that as crews would remove the boards from the interior framework. level below. After the wood was stockpiled, it was ground into cover fill material for Ontario Landfill. Brooks estimates that there was about 3500 tons of wood debris recycled as a part of this project. Amsterdam City Engineer, Richard Miller, said he is extremely pleased with the progress that Ritter & Paratore Contracting, Inc. has made since the project began. He said that because of the mild winter, any delays that might have been encountered along the way have been made up, and little in the way of a problem. “We are very close to being on target with our com-

Within a few weeks, the mill that once employed more than 600 workers, who manufactured long underwear and other similar garments during the first and second World Wars, will soon be no more. Scheduled completion for the project is sometime in early to mid-spring. Brooks said that Ritter & Paratore Contracting, Inc. has come to specialize in projects of this kind during their 30 years of doing business. With a crew of more than 30 workers, the company is able to contract demolition work throughout the northeast and midAtlantic region. Dates set for Terex Bid-Well spring paving service schools CANTON, SD — Mark your calendars. Terex Roadbuilding announces two spring paving service school dates for Terex® Bid-Well automatic roller pavers and workbridges. The two day training sessions are scheduled for Thursday, April 26 and Friday, April 27, and Wednesday, May 2 and Thursday, May 3. The classes will be held in Sioux Falls and Canton, SD. Created specifically for paver owners, operators, service technicians and inspectors, the service school strikes the right balance between classroom instruction and hands-on field demonstrations. The classes offer in-depth discussion for paver and workbridge setup, operation and service, and are taught by seasoned service and field instructors. “Students will learn how to spec and set up our pavers for some of the most complex paving applications, and we cover what options are available to improve paving efficiency,” says Dean Johnson, service manager for Terex Bid-Well. “We also discuss the symptoms of machine aging, what to look for and how to diagnose and correct issues.” The first day features in-class discussion and instruction at the Best Western Ramkota Hotel and Conference Center in Sioux Falls, SD. The series of lectures include: bridge, airport, highway and slope paving techniques; machine setup; texture and curing; controller adjustment and troubleshooting; skewed deck paving; screed rail and chair setup and thin bonded overlays. “We have designed the classes for contractor interaction with instructors and each other,” says Aron Sweeney, service school

coordinator. Day two includes a shuttle to Canton for hands-on paving demonstrations with Terex BidWell pavers, where students put their classroom training into practice. MISSISSAUGA, ON — W.K. Dahms Mfg. Ltd. has successfully launched a new generation of remote controls for Stone Slinger truck conveyors that can dramatically reduce the time to unload and place aggregate loads with precision. The new Stone Slinger™ Creep Drive system provides operators with a remote control feature that not only controls the speed and direction of the conveyor, but allows the operator to remotely maneuver the truck itself around the jobsite. The operator now

has a single set of controls to run the conveyor and reposition the truck for ideal placement of the material, without returning to the truck. The truck and the Stone Slinger become a fully integrated material delivery system. Scott Nelson, manager of W.K. Dahms, reports that the first of the new Stone Slingers equipped with Creep Drive was delivered at the end of August to John Da Silva of Rock Concrete Forming Ltd. in Mississauga, Ontario. After putting the Stone Slinger through its paces for a full season, Da Silva says, “If I was buying another truck, I wouldn’t get anything else — no question!” According to Da Silva, his investment

in the Creep Drive feature has paid off well. “On a typical weeping tile job, the driver has to go back and forth to move the truck four or five times. And, each time, when you get into the truck, you have to turn the PTO off, drive the truck, put the air brakes on again and restart the PTO. COMMERCE CITY, CO — John Wolfe has been appointed to the position of Technical Support manager for Atlas Copco’s Geotechnical Drilling and Exploration business line, effective Jan. 1, 2012. In his new role, Wolfe will report directly to Scott Slater, Business Line manager — GDE (Geotechnical Drilling & Exploration.) He will provide training, technical and product support for all Atlas Copco store branches in the United States. Wolfe’s Atlas Copco career began when he joined the Atlas Copco GDE product company in North Bay, Canada, in 2003. In 2007, he moved to Elko, NV, to accept a technical sales and support position with Atlas Copco CMT USA. In 2008, he accepted responsibility for Exploration Equipment and Consumable Sales and achieved record sales. According to Slater, “John’s vast expe-

Donation from 26 Since the floods, the Club has seen a significant increase in demand for its services, the director said, with as many as 65 young people taking advantage of its afterschool programs each night.

During the flood, Upstate Shredding — Ben Weitsman donated $100,000 to help provide immediate relief to people in the community, providing food, fresh water, shelter and other necessities. After the flood water receded, Upstate Shredding — Ben Weitsman opened its yards to accept all waste materials, at no cost, gathered during cleanup, not just recyclable metal, from the battered community. Demkovich said the donation is the largest private donation ever received to date by the organization, and is likely going to be one of the most significant sources of income for the club in 2012. State funding and other foundation funding has suffered, with the organization expecting to receive half of the funding it had received in 2010 from organizations like the United Way and the Office of Justice. The floods compounded this problem — not only did the organization suffer a loss of $20,000 in property when a shed was destroyed, but the Owego Appalachian Elementary School, where the Boys and Girls Club operated its “Club Positive School Age program” has closed. Club Positive is the organization’s New York State licensed child care program and a significant source of income for the

Boys and Girls Club. Now, the group is looking for a new home for the program, or will have to conduct costly renovations to its building to achieve state compliance. “The Office of Children and Family Services has been very generous in working with us however, it is necessary for us to either renovate our building to meet requirements,” said Demkovich. “Club Positive is the only regular, weekly source of revenue for the Club and closing would significantly impact our ability to continue operations of the Club in its entirety. Our only option appears to be to make renovations to the Club to meet requirements for permanent licensing. The Club is old, and the renovations will be costly, money the Club simply does not have. The possibility of losing our child care program has been very real and it’s impending inevitably has loomed above us since September.” The donation received from Upstate Shredding — Ben Weitsman “will go to sustaining the Club through making the needed renovations for Club Positive and/or filling the gap in our 2012 budget and setting the Club on stronger financial ground,” Demkovich said.
