When the weather is nice like it has been for the past few weeks here in the Northeast, the thought of playing a round of golf is on the minds of many of our friends in the construction and landscaping business. For them, the idea of hopping aboard a golf car and playing their first 18 holes of golf is a rite of spring. It is one that comes without a thought of the golf car they are riding in can be used for anything but playing golf. However, for those who have begun to realize how useful golf cars can be when it comes to moving people and “stuff” in the workplace environment, a golf car, or golf car utility vehicle, is quickly becoming a useful tool. For businesses like Zema’s Nursery of Stephentown, NY and Maple Lane Nursery in Valatie, NY, a versatile, easy to operate golf car is the product of choice. According to Joe Zema, the staff at Zema’s Nursery is quickly coming to realize how their Club Car XRT900 Utility Vehicle, has become “a must” for their operation. Zema, who is a second generation nurseryman, works with his brother Matthew and father Matteo in the day to day operations of their nursery and landscaping business that has been selling trees, shrubs and landscaping supplies over the past 38 years. “We normally do a lot of walking during the course of a day since our facility is so spread out,” said Joe. “We looked into a utility vehicle last year and took delivery of it just before Christmas. Already this year, we are just getting started using it and we are wondering how we got by without it for all those earlier years. By using our XRT-900, we are finding that we are more productive and less tired at the end of the day.” “We have a storage building that is a couple thousand feet away from our main work area. In the past, we pushed these small little carts, the type that our retail customers use to purchase merchandise, to and from the building as a way to move supplies. Now, we use the utility vehicle to do that. We are now potting plants and using the vehicle to move them to the sales area as well. We are finding all sorts of uses for it as each day passes.”

Casey In early March, at the Hard Hat Expo in Syracuse, NY, Kip Walsh, owner of Satch Sales Mobile Solutions, Club Car dealer for New York and surrounding states, shared his thoughts about how important and useful a golf car or golf utility vehicle can be in a business setting other than a golf course. Walsh said that today, Club Car golf cars come in a variety of configurations to meet a business’s needs. They include two and four seat models with a fold down rear seat that allows the transport of people or products, quickly and easily. Additionally, the utility vehicles offer versatile options of their own. He says that these are not converted golf cars, but units with heavier chassis designs, capable of rugged and rough terrain applications. These are designed for work and sports activities alike. “There are even four wheel drive models like the ones we exhibited at the Hard Hat Expo in Syracuse in March,” he says. “Nurseries and landscapers like the Carryall 6 because it has a lot of cargo space. There is room for bales of peat moss and mulch or pallets of product that is loaded directly onto a customer’s truck or trailer.” “We offer ‘lift kits’ as an option for customers who plan to use their vehicles in places where they need additional traction or are operating in rough terrain,” he says. “These kits raise the entire unit up to a safer level for those
applications. The kits allow for us to install larger tires with better ground clearance over rough terrain.” Walsh says that a landscaper or maintenance crew would most likely prefer the four wheel drive configuration because it gives better traction over a wider variety of terrain. “In addition to the gasoline powered version that comes as standard equipment, Club Car also offers a diesel powered model that has hydraulic attachment for use with optional attachments,” he says. “It can be outfitted with a bucket, fork lift attachment, broom for sweeping parking lots and sidewalks, a snow blower and a self-powered rotary mower as well. We offer pull-behind rotary mowers in widths up to 72-inches. These can be used individually or in multiple arrangements for mowing larger areas like paddocks or areas that need a mower that can get in and out of those tight places. With this unit, a customer does not need to purchase a tractor and bush hog to do the same amount of mowing.” “One of our more interesting challenges is to get a prospective customer to consider a golf car vehicle instead of the more traditional piece of equipment to do the job,” he says. “Often, a customer will have the need for a vehicle of some kind, but is uncertain as to what the best solution might be to fill that need. If they will consider a golf car or golf car utility vehicle
as a way to satisfy that need, they can frequently be much more productive than they might otherwise be. Vehicles are available in gas, electric and diesel versions.” “In many cases, a golf car can fill the customer’s need for a lot less money, and do a better job in the process,” he adds. “They are so versatile that once a customer owns a car, they almost immediately find several other uses for the unit in addition to the reason for which they initially rented or purchased the unit. Used cars are also an economical alternative for a new one for those who are on a more limited budget.” Walsh says that while they are almost exclusively a Club Car dealer, Satch Sales also offers the MOTREC line of vehicles, a product that is designed for use in industrial and warehouse applications. Hey Fred I’m the new office manager at a masonry company and recently met with our CPA for the first time. He started asking me about how I run overhead allocation reports, but I have to admit that I was caught like a deer in headlights. Exactly what is overhead allocation? - Laura Hey Laura Overhead allocation can be a difficult concept to grasp, so I’m glad you asked. Let’s start with overhead. Overhead is the group of costs that are crucial to keeping your construction company a functioning business and to ensure that you can continue to bid and work on jobs. The tricky part about these costs, though, is that they are not directly applied to any given job. Let me explain. Examples of over-
head include rental fees for office space, electricity to run said office, and even some of the office staff’s wages — all necessities of running your business and your jobs. Without these expenses, there would be no office staff to maintain data, no electricity to run the computers, and perhaps no office at all! You can see why this is so important. So when you allocate overhead, you’re basically distributing all of the necessary costs of running your business appropriately over all of your jobs. This is why it is important to consider overhead allocation in financial planning and analysis. In fact, estimators should be including an overhead amount in every bid to ensure that the job’s profit will be great enough to cover these fixed costs. I hope this helps! - Fred

26th Annual Hard Hat Expo enjoys delightful Spring weather by Jon M. Casey
Attendees enjoying the outside exhibits. A quick look around the Skid Steer Rodeo arena at the 26th Annual Hard Hat Expo held at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, would suggest that this year’s competition was taking place in late May instead of the first week in March. With unseasonably warm weather on tap for the March 7 and 8 events, thousands of visitors to this year’s show enjoyed visiting outdoor exhibits in weather that had these construction industry members eager to get to work on their priority outdoor projects. Who could blame them? “We had a near record crowd,” said Trade Show manager, Ken Maring, following the show. “The beautiful weather made it much easier for people to attend the show this year. Some years, winter weather is still very much a factor during the show, but not this year. The attitude of those who were at the show was much more upbeat this year than in recent years. This would indicate that there is an expectant uptick in the construction industry in the coming weeks. We were happy to see our show goers enjoying themselves the way that they were this year.” Buzz Barr, fleet manager for Burdick Chevrolet, said that he was happy to see the number of people who were taking advantage of the good weather to attend this year’s Expo. In his company’s exhibit, located in the Main Hall Annex next to the Lee Publications, Inc. exhibit, Barr greeted visitors who were eager to look under the hood of a 2012 specially equipped Chevrolet Malibu police cruiser. This model of patrol car has become a popular choice among law enforcement officials throughout New York State. Venturing outdoors, the mood was light among visitors who were passing between the Horticulture Building and the Center of Progress Building, the main exhibit hall for the event. Outdoor exhibits lined the street in front of the Center of Progress Building, a closed off area designated for this purpose during the two day event. Similarly, the adjoining street was prepared as the venue for this year’s Skid Steer Rodeo, a favorite of vendors and attendees alike. “This event just gets bigger and bigger each year,” said one attendee as she made her way to watch Tuesday’s outdoor rodeo. “I enjoy being around heavy equipment and the Hard Hat Expo gives me a chance to see what’s new in the industry.” Jim Kring, the Show Staff member who designs the
competition events for the Skid Steer Rodeo and who oversees the setup and teardown of the construction trade show said that the unseasonal weather necessitated some minor changes in the outdoor competition. “We had to limit the number of turns in the Skid Steer Rodeo this year because there was no snow or ice to help lubricate the concrete surface of our course,” he said. “We really enjoy competing in this nice weather, but the loaders tend to ‘hop’ on the pavement when it is dry. BOMAG tandem vibratory roller delivers optimal compaction with Asphalt Manager II KEWANEE, IL — BOMAG’s BW278AD-4 AM tandem vibratory roller is equipped with exclusive Asphalt Manager II technology to deliver continuously optimized compaction performance, regardless of operator experience. The new Asphalt Manager II system measures and controls the roller’s compaction performance during operation, resulting in unmatched efficiency and consistent density results. The system continuously monitors the stiffness of the asphalt mat and automatically increases or decreases the compaction force as needed. A real time BOP display lets the operator constantly monitor the asphalt surface temperature, material stiffness, roller speed and amplitude. Asphalt Manager II can also be utilized for proof rolling to allow inspection of base work prior to paving. BOMAG’s innovative ECOMODE system automatically optimizes the performance of the roller’s 130 hp Deutz water cooled diesel engine by matching engine output to the power required for compaction. In addition to lowering fuel costs, the system reduces engine emissions and jobsite noise. Offering a working width of 78-inches, the BW278AD-4 AM delivers maximum frequency of 3,000 vibrations per minute (vpm) to quickly achieve density on various mixes. Vibration frequency is infinitely variable from 2,500 to 3,000 vpm, allowing the rollers to be used in a wide variety of applications. The maximum centrifugal force of 55,575-pounds provided by the front drum is 35 percent higher than units without Asphalt Manager II, allowing the roller to complete compaction in fewer passes. The BW278AD-4 AM offers enhanced operator ergonomics and controls. The cockpit with sliding/swivel seat provides improved operator
comfort and visibility, reduced fatigue, and increased efficiency. The swivel seat makes it easy for the operator to adjust positions while providing a clear view of the roller drum edges. When the seat position is reversed, the joystick controls reverse automatically for natural right/left, forward/back control.
