Clark Equipment was started in 1920 by H. Duane Clark in Syracuse, NY as Clark Concrete, a trucking company with a small fleet of Mack dump trucks. Clark Concrete evolved with the concrete industry until around 1970. As with many family businesses, through the years the sons and grandsons also became involved. In the early 1970s DW Clark Road Equipment Company, focusing mainly on construction equipment, was developed and headed up by Donnie Clark, Lyndon Clark and Gerry Tracey while Clark Concrete continued to operate in the concrete business. Within a few years DW Clark Road Equipment evolved into Tracey Road Equipment. The Clark Concrete Company continued to focus on the concrete business through the mid 2000s. Around 2005 the company focus turned to new and used equipment sales and rental, headed by Adam Clark. Adam mentions, “We decided to move out of the concrete business and focus on the sales and rental of contractor-based construction equipment.” Clark Equipment rents, sells, and delivers plus will provide trade evaluations and also purchase quality used equipment. “We had a nice Genie S40 Boom lift advertised in Hard Hat News. John Scott with the Town of Kirkland called to buy it. We delivered the machine, and they demo it for a little while to get comfortable with it,” Adam explained. While talking with Adam during the machine trial, John Scott discovered that Lyndy Clark, Donnie Clark and Gerry Tracey were all part of DW Clark Road Equipment back in the 70s and early 80s. “As it turned out, the Town of Kirkland still has a Walters Snow Fighter that my father Lyndy had personally sold to the town back then. John and I decided on the spot to call up my father and ask him if there was any warranty left on the rig he had sold them 40 years ago! That put a smile on all our faces as we laughed knowing that 40 years later I am following in their footsteps. The equipment world is a small one, and we have a lot of fun with it. “If anyone has any ‘chotchke’ like a DW Clark Road Equipment calendar, or whatever from the 70s, I’d love to grab it, frame it, and give it to my father, Uncle Donnie, and Gerry Tracey. I know those three guys had a lot of fun when they were first starting out in the business together and would really appreciate it.”
Talbert Manufacturing introduces new 50CC/RP hybrid trailer for contractor fleet use RENSSELAER, IN — Talbert Manufacturing, a leader in the specialty built trailer and transport system industry, launches its 50CC/RP Hybrid Trailer. Combining the benefits of a close couple lowbed design with a roller paver model, the 50CC/RP offers a longer loading incline and best in class lift capacity of any trailer on the market. Finish height at the front of the main beams is 8-3/4-inches. Additionally, the trailer features a bolt-on ramp to provide a more gradual load angle at the rear; 15 degrees rather than the standard 35 degree angle. The Ins and Outs of Tower Restoration by Stephen Wagner
Nearly 50 years have passed since the water tower and colonnaded fountain at State University of New York’s Albany campus was erected. In those intervening years, time and the elements have taken their toll on this cultural landmark. The time has come for them to be refurbished. The carillon water tower and main fountain area, located within the Podium of the Uptown campus, are not only central, architectural elements to the campus, but the 248-foot tall tower includes a 311,000 gallon water tank that provides both water volume and pressure for the domestic, sprinkler, and standpipe systems for all Uptown buildings. “Basically, we had an existing water tower, located right in the middle of the campus.” explained Project Manager Dave Mineau of Jersen Construction, the successful bidder on the project. “We completely gutted it and cleaned the whole thing out. Now, we’re rebuilding it, all new.” “There are some areas that we have to keep the same, maintaining the same finish,” adds Mitchell Sisson also with Jersen. “We’re cleaning with pressure washing, and re-staining areas as well.” “The challenge with the work on the fountain is that it is in the middle of the campus so there is no easy access,” Mineau said. “As a result, everything had to come up out of the hole, literally speaking. Initially, the reconstruction team had a real problem accessing the site,” he added. “In order to overcome this challenge, With two of the TEREX TA6 site dumpers on the job, Jersen workers are able to move material quickly and easily.

we built an inclined ramp at about a 20 degree angle, down into the site. The hole is 20-feet deep, maybe 17-feet deep from where we have an access point. We literally need to go over the tops of tunnels and everything else that the school has located underground. That is when we decided to use the two TEREX TA6 Site Dumpers that we bought from Abele Tractor and Equipment Co., Inc.” “We drive these dumpers up and down the ramps. Instead of taking a half yard of material out at a time, as you would with a normal power buggy, we are taking 2-½-yards with the TA6. These Site Dumpers have big hoppers, nearly six
feet wide. We load them with mini-excavators down in the work area, much as we would if they were actually dump trucks. Then, we haul the material out.” “Our storage yard is a quarter of a mile away, so we fabricated an access path that we built with rubber matting so we wouldn’t damage existing concrete,” he said. “We lined it with orange cones for visibility.” “With the TA6, we are able to go all the way from out in the yard, onto the campus and into the jobsite,” he said. “We took all of the demolition materials out with these units, and all the new fill that

Jensen we’re bringing in comes in, in the TA6s as well.” According to a SUNY-Albany press release, the water tower work will include the removal of any corrosion and the reinforcement of any deficient structural elements. New waterproof coatings will be applied to the interior and exterior of the water tank and structural system. The tank’s heating system, which protects water from freezing, will be replaced and updated to modern standards. The water tower exterior will be cleaned and it will be re-surfaced to its original condition. The carillon will receive a new speaker system. The water tower’s iconic lighting will be upgraded to an energy efficient, LED lighting system, which will save energy and add a new special event, light-color feature to the campus. Additionally, the plans include replacement of the deteriorating stairs leading from the Podium deck to the fountain area along with replacement of the single-pane, inefficient, and corroding windows around the Lecture Center concourse. This will be outfitted with a new energy efficient curtain wall system. The fountain deck will be demolished, as will the fountain’s mechanical, electrical, and plumbing infrastructure. The replacement fountain (and systems) will be more energy and water efficient. They ultimately will require less annual maintenance. Mineau reports that there is a very special coating that is going on the fountain floor, furnished by a company called Fusion Floors. “It is used in aircraft carriers and cruise ships,” he said. “It’s about 1/8th of an inch thick and proprietary. It’s real fancy stuff. It makes the pool in the fountain stronger.” Ultimately this project was designed to not only be a functional restoration of the existing structures and their amenities, but it is also meant to create an attractive four season location with the addition of selected trees, gardens, and landscaping, LED lighting in the base of the fountain, and a new, more interactive center element with seating area. “We’ll be working on it through next year,” he said. “We will shut down in November, and restart in the spring, maybe April.” For more information on the Jersen Construction Group, visit their website at www.jersen.com.
The central fountain area is the focal point of the project.
Abele: the Quiet Company by Stephen Wagner Any company that says, “We’re committed to enhancing your profitability” is not to be taken lightly. They deserve to be studied. One such company is Abele Tractor and Equipment in Albany NY. With an equipment lot that features a seemingly endless number of tractors and other construction machinery, Abele offers the right equipment for the project, whether the job is a small, medium or large one. For example, Abele Tractor and Equipment supplied Jersen Construction with two Terex TA6s to expedite refurbishment of the water tower and fountain restoration project at the SUNY-Albany campus. As one Jersen executive pointed out, “The Terex TA6 Site Dumper is the savior of the project.” Jersen’s Mitchell Sisson emphasized that due to the TA6’s versatility and quietness, they were able to keep the project under bid. The T6’s muffled sound while operating, is the key to this project because college classes are in session while construction is underway. Louder noise would clearly be an intrusion. Sisson said that at one point the project was nine weeks behind due to a delay. However, because they could work while school was in session, the TA6 brought them back up to speed. Abele Tractor and Equipment
Co., Inc. is a family-owned business that has been in operation since 1875, so they have seen trends come and go for five generations. Abele’s core business is selling, leasing, renting and servicing a variety of tractors and equipment. They also sell and service ground maintenance equipment for commercial and consumer customers. During World War II, the company was issued a priority rating by the government to purchase structural steel and fuel. Following the war, the business segued mainly from repairing equipment, to selling and servicing construction and consumer outdoor power equipment. Exercising what might well have been a vision of the future, Abele began focusing on customers projects, in and around Albany in the 1960s and 70s. Those projects included the labyrinthine of state and federal highways in and around the capitol, as well as the New York State Thruway. Abele was also one of the first companies to realize the value of renting and leasing construction equipment to contractors in the area. Today, Abele specializes in the sales and service of Kobelco excavators, Kubota construction and industrial equipment, ASV track loaders and the full TEREX line of equipment. More importantly, they offer parts, service, for their rental and leasing equipment.
Lou Taylor, account manager for the Jersen account said that Abele has more than 175 excavators, 50 off-road trucks, and more than 50 bulldozers and wheel loaders of various sizes, available for rent or lease. For the convenience of their customers, it is all done from one location. “We have 13 factory trained service technicians and a parts inventory that is designed to support the equipment that we sell and rent. In this way,” he stressed, “we are equipped to give our customers the kind of service they need, at the time they need it.” (They offer 24 hour emergency service.) Taylor noted that Abele and Jersen have been doing business since 1992. “I’m in contact with someone from the Jersen Construction Group, almost every day,” he said. He added that Abele’s commitment to providing the equipment and service after the sale has kept them the region’s leading dealership for heavy equipment. Abele’s mission statement is “To be committed to making sure that every customer is treated like our only customer.” For more information on Abele sales and service, call 518-4384444, e-mail sales@abeletractor.com, or stop in at 72 Everett Rd., Albany, NY. Common Ground Alliance’s 2011 DIRT Report confirms importance of calling 811 before digging in damage prevention process One free phone call reduces likelihood of incidents to less than 1 percent WASHINGTON, D.C. — Common Ground Alliance (CGA), the stakeholder-run organization dedicated to protecting underground utility lines and the people who dig near them, on Sept. 19 announced findings from its comprehensive 2011 Damage Information Reporting Tool (DIRT) Report. The report, which is the sum of all 2011 data submitted anonymously and voluntarily by damage prevention stakeholders, confirmed the importance of making a free call to 811 to reach a local one call center as most critical to safety. When an excavator notifies a one call center before digging, damage occurs less than 1 percent of the time, according to the report. The report also estimates the total number of damages could be reduced by 31 percent if all digging was preceded by a locate request. The 2011 DIRT Report benefited from a significant increase in reporting from one stakeholder group: locators, the professionals who identify the approximate location of underground facilities by using paint or flags. The nearly 100,000 additional records submitted to DIRT this year, combined with the quality of those records, resulted in this year’s data being the most complete to date, scoring the highest ever Data Quality Index (DQI) since the metric was introduced in 2008. “We know that calling 811 before digging is the single most important step in preventing underground utility incidents, and the growth in data submissions this year further affirms this important message,” said Bob Kipp, CGA president. “The 16 in-
dustries that comprise CGA are continuing to increase the quality of our data, which will help all stakeholders be more effective in targeting their outreach to the right audiences with meaningful messages.” Because more complete data was submitted this year, CGA employed a new approach to estimate the total underground incidents for 2011. The new analysis used a linear regression model for the 11 states believed to have mandatory damage reporting. The result was that underground utility events continue to be a major problem, with 330,000 incidents estimated last year. Although this number represents a new baseline, the downward year-to-year trend in in-

The 2011 DIRT Report examined the root causes of 80 percent of all events submitted (up from 54 percent for 2010), and the top causes were identified as follows: • Excavation practices not sufficient, 41 percent • Notification not made, 26 percent
• Locating practices not sufficient, 22 percent The percentage of known incidents listing “Notification not made” as a root cause dropped 6 percent from 2010 to its lowest point during the last five years, demonstrating the effectiveness of the 811 campaign. These include the identification of locator and excavator best practices, partnering with underground infrastructure utilities and industry associations to distribute educational materials about safe excavation practices and more. The report also notes that occupants, farmers, building demolition, small fencing, irrigation and landscaping contractors were among the least likely audiences to call 811 before digging, suggesting that outreach be targeted to these groups. It’s a balancing act! Safety vs. Risk by Melanie Parker
The beautiful expanse of Niagara Falls was the backdrop for a recent high wire walk performed by Nik Wallenda. For companies in the crane and rigging industry like Clark requesting the equipment and technical support Clark Rigging & Rental of Lockport, NY, there is a that Wallenda needed for his planned crossing of the need to balance safety with risk each time their equip- falls June 15, 2012. He was looking to Clark Rigging ment starts. With large, specialized equipment like the on the American side of Niagara Falls, to help anchor cranes and specialty material movers that they use on the high wire suspended between the U.S. and a regular basis, they are always alert when they share Canada. “Nik Wallenda walked into our office one day and the road with all other drivers as they move the equipment to and from a job site. In most cases, their most said, ‘I’m going to walk a wire over Niagara Falls,’” said prevalent concern is their battle with the force of grav- Clark recently. “My brother Steve and I scratched our heads and thought, ‘OK, Good Luck!’ But by the time ity. So it was with this kind of understanding that Clark he left we were convinced that this wasn’t a meaningRigging began to take the matter seriously when Nik less stunt but a well engineered, thought out, and Wallenda, family descendent of The World Famous professional job. This is the kind of job requirements Wallendas family, came to company President, David that we deal with on a daily basis.”
A bystander snaps a photo of the anchor apparatus set up on the U.S. side of the falls.
“It turns out that cranes were an integral part of the project,” said Dave. “They were instrumental as a way to elevate and provide tension to the wire. Like so many of the jobs we perform, there was great risk involved. Once we had met with the Wallenda team, we realized we were involved with the same kind of challenges, we both have to deal with the forces of gravity and we do it with the utmost respect and planning. We both know that if you fail in any way, the results are often catastrophic. Together, we were looking to balance the risk at hand with all that we know in the way of safety, to make the project happen.” For this Wallenda project, the company, POWER Engineers, a global engineering firm, that specializes in installing power transmission lines. POWER Engineers planned the actual wire, installation and workability of the wire rope used. Their engineers plan and carry out high line installations under the most challenging conditions in nature. “They chose Clark Rigging because of our reputation for professionalism, safety, quality equipment and excellent staff,” said Clark. Dave noted that they called upon O’Connell Electric for other specialized equipment and expert linemen for the same reasons. “I think Nik basically put his life and safety in our hands,” said Dave. “That’s quite a responsibility, but one we deal with everyday, on every job we do. And, WOW, what a team it turned out to be!” Dave said that it was assuring to know that the Great Nik Wallenda had to adhere to the safety/risk ratio, just as Dave’s workers do. Nik was required to wear a safety line on his historic walk. He had never used one before and felt it was actually a hazard to his walk. But, in the end, he wore the tether because it was the only way he would be permitted to make ClarkRigging

ClarkRigging the walk. He knew that there would always be the question, “Why no safety harness or fall protection?” if he fell to what would have been, certain death. The Jobsite The installation of a 2-inch wire rope over this “Wonders of the World” was not easy. In this location, the planning and preparation was done without the advantage of it having been done here previously. No one really knew what the conditions would be. “We knew we would be scrutinized by The Park Service and the attempt would be done under criteria that made it more complex,” said Dave. “Did that scare the team?” he asked. “No, it only made us more determined to master the Great Niagara. Everything went according to plan. If you don’t know how this project worked out, you certainly missed a dramatic, beautiful and flawless event that the entire world enjoyed.” In the design of the high wire, POWER relied on techniques they had learned in other industries. According to Peter Catchpole, the senior project manager who led the POWER team, “POWER installed micropile anchors into bedrock to hold the cable at a tension of 30 tons (60,000-pounds) by lifting near both anchors with 170 ton cranes. The cable sagged a mere 35-feet at its midpoint placing it 200-feet above the river below. The POWER team developed some unique engineering solutions, such as the installation of a series of stabilizing pendulums to eliminate the twisting on the cable that would have made the effort impossible.” Catchpole added, “POWER successfully handled the design and overnight installation and teardown of the 2-inch diameter cable for Wallenda’s 1,400-foot walk across the gorge. It was installed overnight in 14 hours and removed three days later in seven.” Steve Clark, who serves as Clark Rigging’s vice president, noted that installing a 1200' practice wire at the Seneca Niagara Casino was invaluable practice for the install team. “We had our 150 ton crane on site to elevate the wire. Anchored at both ends the crane had a 66,000-pound pull on the wire to give it the stability and inclines that are required for Nik to practice on. He has never used this large a diameter wire before, so we learned a lot about it.” “For instance, after we strung the wire, Nik jumped on it and announced he could not walk it because the

wire was rolling. The team then got out some materials, tools and sand bags and fabricated weighted pendulums, hanging them every 200-feet along the wire. We solved that problem but of course that created new ones!” he said. “Officials insisted that there be a rescue basket available, just in case. The basket couldn't roll past the clamps holding the pendulums but an engineer designed different clamps, on the spot, that would work. As the world now knows, the event took place flawlessly!” Dave said in similar fashion, Clark Rigging takes this kind of care and concern with every job that they do. From the smallest lift to the most complex heavy project imaginable, safety trumps production and risk taking. “We at Clark Rigging have adhered to this formula forever,” he said. “This has enabled us to have a sterling safety record despite tackling the most difficult, risky projects. We approach every project with a careful plan. Our professional staff has built a culture of safety. The Clark Companies have done that for over 50 years, providing quality service all over New York State. The Wallenda project was a high profile project that got lots of attention, but as I have said many times, to many people ‘It’s what we do.’” For more information, contact them at 716 433-4600 or 716-695-4860 or via e-mail at Dave.Clark@Clarkrigging.com.

Volvo grader line featured at this year’s World of Asphalt and AGG-1 Aggregates Forum by Jon M. Casey Sean Glennon, vice president of Volvo CE Shippensburg Operations and Volvo’s Gary J. year. For contractors who are looking for a motor grader that is able to perform according to today’s rigorous standards and at the same time, cost less to operate than most other manufacturer’s similar models, the G946B is certainly a grader that requires consideration. Glennon was excited to say that the plant expansion at the Shippensburg, PA manufacturing plant and recently designated North American Headquarters for Volvo CE, will give this facility the capability of complete manufacture and assembly of the 900 series motor graders. He said that some of the component parts are still being manufactured abroad then shipped to the plant for final assembly. In the future, everything will be U.S. made. As we began our walk around of the G946B, Gary Atkinson’s personal experience with the equipment made the experience extremely informative and interesting to an unskilled observer like me. His patient explanation of how systems worked and what might be important to a contractor who is looking for the various advantages that the G946B has to offer, made the time spent at this exhibit, most rewarding. For example, Gary began by saying that the all wheel drive feature on this grader, gives the operator more grading power and control while performing on the job. He said that when the grader is equipped with the company’s 8 speed

He said that the dual gear Circle Drive System uses direct acting hydraulic power for increased turning and holding capability under full load. The Circle Drive System also uses two hardened drive pinions and is protected against impact damage by an overload relief valve as standard equipment. “Our transmission placement is unique to the industry,” he added. “We have engineered the engine transmission to be beneath the cab and ahead of the articulation hinge. This design puts the weight of the transmission within the grader’s wheelbase. This provides

Our exclusive location provides for greater cutting capability, increased steering control and better stability on side slopes.” As we moved to the rear of the grader, Gary highlighted the unique design of the grader’s cooling system and the plenum chamber that houses the various coolers. He said that the door mounted cooling fan is reversible so the system is capable of cleaning itself of dust and debris that might accumulate in the radiators mounted in the sides and door of the plenum.
Inside the plenum chamber, a port to the engine compartment is visible. Air is drawn off the engine and out the plenum as an additional way to control the engine operating temperature. An engine driven air compressor can power worker's hand tools. “We do not have a stacked cooler core system like other brands. This greatly reduces the likelihood of trashing and overheating,” he emphasized. “There is a hydraulically powered fan mounted on the exterior of the door that runs independently from the engine. That way, it saves on fuel and horsepower as well.

Hey Fred
Fred Ode, CEO/Chairman, Foundation Software
Hey FredWe have been using the same basic accounting software since the business began ten years ago…and we’re comfortable with it, and we know how to use it. The problem is that it hasn’t really grown with our company, and it can’t do some of the tasks we need it to now.
Mid-range systems cost considerably more money, and that’s been holding us back from looking into construction-specific accounting software…but how do I know when we should upgrade? -Evan Hey EvanLet me ask you a question: What is it costing you
to stay with the system you have now? Small business accounting systems are great tools for many small contractors. But growing contractors — like you — often find that these tools no longer serve their needs. To see if it’s time to upgrade, ask yourself these three questions: 1) Does my current system work the way construction works? More specifically, does it track job costs by tasks or cost codes, and phases? Does it handle AIA billings, certified payroll, over/under billing reports and all of
the other constructionspecific items? 2) Does the system adequately handle payroll activities? For example, automatically calculating pay rates, deductions and fringes, and multiple taxing authorities from a single timecard? Is it capable of instantly preparing such reports as certified payroll, minority compliance, workers’ compensation, and 401(K)? 3) Can you access detailed job information whenever you need it? Are you able to obtain important job cost data on
the fly? Or are you using spreadsheets and outside applications just to complete essential functions, such as reporting? Can you look at a job summary report and drilldown for details — all the way to an original timecard or invoice if needed? If the answer is “no” to any of these questions, it may be time to consider upgrading. At the end of the day, what you really need to do is determine if the benefits of having access to accurate job data and construction-specific functionality outweigh
the costs of purchasing a new system, spending time to learn all its capabilities, and so on. Good luck! -Fred Call for Questions: Thank you for reading “Hey Fred!” CEO/Chairman of Foundation Software, Fred Ode is here to answer any question you might have. Since 1988, the annual golf outing raises money to provide assistance to college students who have interest in pursuing a career in New York State’s construction industry. More than $916,000 in scholarships has been granted since the fund’s inception making it the largest state industry effort of its kind in the country. The committee received 48 applications from more than 17 college and universities, and selected those students based on skill, knowledge, merit, financial need, extracurricular activities and evaluations. For more information on the scholarship visit www.agcnys.org. Tomas Kovalcik, a Brooklyn resident and civil engineering student at Syracuse University said, “the AGC NYS Scholarship is very valuable to me due to the recent economic hardships and the ris-
ing tuition costs.” “Governor Andrew Cuomo is investing billions of dollars in rebuilding the state’s infrastructure,” said Brendan Manning, AGC NYS director of Education and Environment. “In the fast paced world of the construction industry, it is crucial to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to education and training the future of the industry. If we can educate future construction leaders and keep them here in New York, we all benefit in the long run.” The winners for 2012 are: Matthew Angus, SUNY Cobleskill, Mayfield, NY; Christian Garber, SUNY Canton, Mayfield, NY; Michael Garber, SUNY Canton, Mayfield, NY; Natalie Geier, SUNY Delhi, Mayfield, NY; Lucius Bailey, Monroe CC, Hilton, NY; Matthew Bunal, Clarkson, Rome, NY; Angelia Cavanaugh, Alfred State, Whitesville, NY;

Gary J. Atkinson comments on how Volvo engineered an environmentally friendly and efficient cooling system with non-stacked coolers, for the engine and hydraulic system. It features a temperature control monitoring system that monitors ambient air temperature as well as engine coolant and hydraulic system temperatures and operates when needed.” There are numerous additional standard features and optional acces-

MT. VERNON, IOWA — The Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) — a nonprofit international organization that serves to expand and improve the use of Tilt-Up as the preferred building system — has announced the addition of Kim Basham PhD, PE, to the 2012 TCA Convention lineup.
Basham, president of KB Engineer, LLC, will present “Controlling Cracks in Slabs, a session focused on what causes out of joint dry/thermal shrinkage cracks. His presentation, to be held Thursday, Oct. 4 from 8-10 a.m., is designed to educate attendees on how to develop a
crack control philosophy that is a combination of design focus and construction effectiveness to minimize random cracking in slabs. His presentation is part of the field supervisor track, a new offering this year. Sponsored by Citadel Contractors, the track offers convenient
sessions that address issues critical to the development and success of today’s field supervisors and project managers. The track is also designed to fulfill the latest upgrade of the ACI/TCA Certified Tilt-Up Supervisor and Technician program by providing the necessary CEUs for re-
certification. Until the adaptation to a CEU option for recertification, renewal of certification required studying for and taking an exam similar to the one taken to qualify for initial certification. “This CEU opportunity further accentuates the commitment to and value of quality education for today’s Tilt-Up professionals,” said Jim Baty, technical director of TCA. “Qualified superintendents are the backbone of our company. Tilt-Up specific continuing education is very difficult to come by so I’m excited that TCA will be providing us with this opportunity at the fall convention,” said Glenn Doncaster, president of TCA. Other sessions planned for field construction personnel include: • Modern Tilt-Up Contractors: Pride and Craft, by Mitch Bloomquist; • How to Manage, Motivate & Maximize Productive Field Crews, by George Hedley; • Tips and Tricks, by Barclay Gebel; • Panel Discussion: Bracing to the Slab, by Glenn Doncaster; • Project Case Study: Natl. Museum of Health and Medicine, by David C. Costello; • Cranes, Bracing and Erection Safety, by Gary Fischer; • Quality Control and Assurance, by Shawn Hickey; • Sustainable Concrete Mixes: Understanding and Utilizing Fly ash and Slag (GGBFS) by Andrew McPherson; and • Panel Discussion: Learning From Others — Best Practices, Honest Mistakes and Plain Stupidity, by Shawn Hickey. In addition to the field supervisor focus, TCA is offering attendees an opportunity to participate in Association committees by attending a Q&A session held at the start of each committee meeting. The goal is to introduce the committee and its purpose, as well as provide attendees the chance to get involved and share their input.
Kim Basham, president of KB Engineer, LLC, will present “Controlling Cracks in Slab.” The following committee meetings are scheduled during the convention: • Safety Committee Meeting: Wed., Oct. 3 from 4-5 p.m.; • Promotions Committee Meeting: Thurs., Oct. 4 from noon-1 p.m.; • Technical Committee Meeting: Thurs., Oct. 4 from noon -1 p.m.; and • Membership Committee Meeting: Thurs., Oct. 4 from noon-1 p.m. The TCA Convention will kick off Tuesday, Oct. 2 with outdoor product demonstrations and an opening reception. Specific session information for Wednesday and Thursday can be found by visiting www.tiltup.org/convention/2012/programs. A golf outing will be held on Friday. For more information, visit www.tiltup.org/convention. Hanley Wood is the official media sponsor of the Convention. TCA was founded in 1986 to improve the quality and acceptance of site cast Tilt-Up construction, a construction method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. For more information about the TCA, visit www.tiltup.org or call Ed Sauter at 319-895-6911, or email esauter@tilt-up.org.

Ritchie Bros. to sell more than 60 Caterpillar D11 crawler tractors during huge unreserved public auction featuring mining equipment in North Carolina this September RALEIGH-DURHAM, NC — Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers (NYSE and TSX: RBA), the world’s largest industrial auctioneer, will conduct a massive mining and earthmoving equipment auction on Sept 27, 2012 during the company’s grand opening auction at its new permanent auction site in RaleighDurham, NC. More than 180 pieces of mining and earthmoving equipment are already featured in the auction, including more than 60 Caterpillar D11 crawler tractors, more than 35 Caterpillar 777 rock trucks, more than 30 wheel loaders and more — selections so large that they’re rarely seen in the heavy equipment industry in a single sale. The Sept. 27 unreserved public auction, which is set to take place one day after the completion of MINExpo International 2012 in Las Vegas, is a divestiture of non-strategic equipment from West Virginia based Trinity Coal Corporation. Bidders can register and bid in one of four ways: live and in person at the Company’s Raleigh-Durham, NC auction site; via simulcast and in person at the Company’s Las Vegas, NV auction site; online in real time at www.rbauction.com, or by proxy. “We have an unprecedented number of D11’s featured in our September Raleigh-Durham auction. In fact, this is more D11’s than we’ve sold in the past four years of unreserved industri-
al auctions combined,” said John Fairley, regional sales manager, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. “This large selection of mining and earthmoving equipment is sure to catch the attention of both domestic and international buyers. For those who are looking for anything from big wheel loaders and crawler tractors to massive rock trucks and motor graders — this auction showcases Ritchie Bros. as the place to go when you need mining equipment. And, as with all of our auctions, each item will sell to the highest bidder, regardless of price-with no minimum bids or reserve prices.” “Trinity Coal Corp. had been using the equipment at their coking and thermal coal mining complexes in Kentucky and West Virginia,” said David Stetson, chief restructuring officer for Trinity Coal Corp. “Those in the mining industry will know D11’s are primarily mass earthmoving machines. The fleet is composed of ‘big rock job’ type machines that we primarily used to remove overburden at our coal operations in eastern Kentucky and West Virginia,” added Mr. Stetson. “At one time, our D11 fleet was the largest fleet operating anywhere in the U.S.” After being in operation for a number of years, some of the Caterpillar units are currently undergoing a refurbishing process in preparation for the Septem-
ber auction. All powertrain and undercarriage updates are being conducted by authorized CAT dealers. Detailed equipment information, including highresolution photos of the equipment, is available on our website at www.rbauction.com/bigiron. More than 60 D11’s in a single auction event is a rare find. Companies looking for brand new equipment may have to face a wait time before acquiring a machine to put to work. “If you’re looking for a brand new D11 (from the manufacturer), you’ll have to add your name to a wait list and the queue is currently long due to high demand for mining equipment in various regions. At the September auction in North Carolina, people will have the opportunity to find a large selection of well maintained equipment - it’s a big opportunity to acquire big iron that you can potentially put to work the following day after the auction,” added Mr. Stetson. “There is currently high demand for this type of equipment across the globe, in Canada, Latin America, Asia and even India with Ritchie Bros. in charge of the auction, buyers in all of these regions and beyond will have an opportunity to acquire quality earthmoving equipment at reasonable prices.” General auction details — RaleighDurham, NC (Sept 27, 2012):
The Sept. 27 mining and earthmoving equipment auction forms part of a two day Grand Opening auction for the Company’s new Raleigh-Durham, NC permanent auction site, taking place on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept 26-27, 2012. Grillo Services expands container division Purchases first Caterpillar brand roll off truck sold in Connecticut MILFORD, CT — In an expansion of its container division, Grillo Services, LLC is the first Connecticut business to purchase Caterpillar’s new CT660 commercial truck in a roll off configuration. The purchase will enable Grillo to increase its solid waste disposal division to serve municipal, commercial and residential customers, and provide expanded services to tree removal and large scale landscape companies, saving them time and money in tree removal and organic recycling. The custom built, sleek, ergonomically designed Caterpillar CT660, model year 2012, features Caterpillar’s CX31 transmission for increased fuel mileage as well as a set back front axle with a shorter wheel base, allowing for a better turning radius and greater cab visibility. Caterpillar had previously only manufac-
tured diesel truck engines for truck chassis made by Ford, International, PACCAR and Freightliner. Just this past year, the company began manufacturing their own trucks, following an extended period of road testing. “This purchase will help Grillo Services expand our container division, offering clients one stop shopping,” said Grillo Services President, Michael J. Grillo. “We expect the division to double its contracts as a result,” he continued. “We are delighted that Grillo Services is our first roll off truck purchaser,” said David J Gillen, On Highway sales representative at H.O. Penn Machinery, the Caterpillar Dealer for Lower New York and Connecticut. “We look forward to further facilitating Grillo Services’ future growth.” Grillo Services, LLC is a 19 year old family run landscape supply company providing container and dumpster rental services, organic com-
Mustang unleashes the world’s most powerful skid steer loader to the North American market WEST BEND, WI — Mustang, a leader in compact equipment for agriculture and construction markets, is pleased to introduce the all new, vertical lift 4000V Skid Steer loader; the world’s most powerful skid steer loader. The 4000V boasts a rated operating capacity of 4,000-pounds, a true vertical lift height of 144inches, and an industry leading 99 hp from its Cummins engines. The 4000V is truly a beast that cannot be tamed. The all new 4000V is a true vertical lift machine, which means the lift path follows a vertical line as opposed to an ‘s’ shaped path offered by competitive vertical lift models. Lifting up to 144-inches, the 4000V can easily load high trailers and trucks. With an unmatched rated operating capacity, there
are few jobs this powerful machine cannot handle. “Mustang is excited to take the reigns as the world’s most powerful skid steer loader,” said Sean Bifani, product manager. “The 4000V allows Mustang to fulfill its customer’s needs for high powered, high capacity skid steers. Paired with its high lifting height, the 4000V enters the high end of the skid steer loader market, where product options are minimal. The 4000V provides maximum capacity and the industry’s largest breakout force at 9,150-pounds.” For additional informa.tion, contact Lori A. Heidecker, director of Marketing Americas. SIMA announces online Build a Bid program on Resource 24/7 Training Center MILWAUKEE, WI — The Snow & Ice Management Association (SIMA) recently adapted its popular Build a Bid course to an online format, available on the SIMA Resource 24/7 Training Center. Phil Harwood, CSP of Pro-Motion Consulting presents the program, which helps snow and ice companies improve at bidding and estimating more accurately. “After several successful in-person Build a Bid workshops, SIMA is pleased to be offering the program online to reach a wider audience,” says Brian Birch, SIMA’s assistant executive director. “Build a Bid provides snow specific bidding and estimating help that was developed by experienced snow contractors, and it is applicable to companies of all sizes.” The package includes four educational sessions (Know your Numbers, Customers are Key, Putting it all Together, and Delivering the Bid) total-
ing approximately two hours, and also comes with a comprehensive estimating tool and video demonstration. The selfpaced program features: • Tips for breaking down the costs of your equipment and overhead; • Methods for creating bids per season, per push, and more; • Sales tips and techniques to increase your chances of success; and • A comprehensive bidding spreadsheet and complementary video to help you accelerate your ability to bid accurately and more quickly. SEATTLE — Spider, a division of SafeWorks, LLC, announces Dan Fink has joined its New York operation center as district sales representative. In this role, Fink is responsible for solving the suspended access and safety challenges of contractors and facility owners in the five boroughs of New York. Most recently, Fink served as sales representative for Kenseal Con-
struction Products Corporation, consistently growing sales volume and meeting profit goals during his five year tenure. He brings a strong background of sales experience as well as familiarity with the markets Spider serves — from restoration and maintenance to glazing and waterproofing. Fink holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from State University of New York at Oswego.
“Dan is a welcomed addition to our New York team,” comments John Sotiroff, vice president Spider Sales and Distribution. “His entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to building valuable customer relationships will ensure the contractors and facility owners in this competitive market receive the highest quality, most trusted suspended access solutions available.” Founded in 1947, Spi-
der, a division of SafeWorks, created the powered suspended access business by introducing the well known Spider basket. Since then, our product and service offering has expanded greatly to serve the needs of an ever growing marketplace. Spider is the largest manufacturer and distributor of access and safety solutions in North America, serving more customers from
more locations with a wider variety of products and services than any other company. From baskets, traction hoist and platform rental, to safety and training, to specialty engineered products — Spider has a strong team of professionals, along with a national network of sales, service and support capabilities to provide you with the most reliable access solutions available.
