Eight things to consider when specifying rollers for compaction
Matching the machine and features to job specifications is critical to compacting success.
Pneumatic Tire Rollers rely on the static weight of the machine and two rows of overlapping tires to compact. by Katie Pullen, brand marketing manager, CASE Construction Equipment There are a number of variables that determine the right roller for each compaction job. The most obvious is whether you’re compacting soil or asphalt. Other factors are the width of the area to be compacted, the final density required, the grade of the area to be compacted, the type of asphalt mix, soil type, as well the type of materials that lay below the
lift being compacted. There are also considerations with each machine related to frequency, amplitude and centrifugal force that will have an effect on final density. Compaction helps ensure the integrity of whatever structure or passageway is being built near it, from foundations to utility lines and roadways. Here are a few things to consider when renting or buying a machine for compaction:
Soil Compaction — Smooth Drum or Pad foot Drum? When looking at the type of soils being compacted, more granular materials such as sand and gravel typically require a smooth drum. The smooth drum will allow the material to lock together similar to a puzzle piece. Having optimum moisture in the soil is critical to allow for movement without friction. More cohesive materials, such as clays, require a pad foot drum. Cohesive soils tend to stick together and slip over each other. For these types of soils, it is critical to shear the soil with the pad foot drum in order to achieve compaction. It’s also important to note that contractors have another option with the use of pneumatic tire compactors. These machines feature two rows of tires (one in front, one in back) that overlap and provide static compaction through simple weight and kneading. Ballasts can be added to increase weight to meet compaction requirements. Drum Size The contractor needs to look at meeting the required compaction density in the least amount of passes, but that doesn’t always mean a bigger drum is better. Some contractors look at a large road job and immediately think an 84-inch drum would get the job done faster than a 66-inch drum, but that 66inch drum may ultimately be the optimal configuration for getting the job done in a comparable number of passes while minimizing overlap, which helps reduce over compaction (the disintegration of an area that’s already reached its required density). Weight Weight is an important consideration when taking into account the size of lift you are doing and the desired final compaction density. The static weight of the machine plus the force generated by its eccentric motor creates centrifugal force, which helps determine the compaction depth you can get. Too heavy of a machine used on a thinner lift can cause over com-

paction and too light of a machine on thicker lifts means not compacting to the base of the lift. In some cases a light machine may have a higher centrifugal force due to higher amplitude. Soil compaction with significantly deeper lifts will require a heavier machine with greater centrifugal force in order to reach those deeper depths. With asphalt, where the lifts are considerably thinner, frequency is more important than centrifugal force. The thinner the layer equals less force, therefore lighter machines may have an advantage. Weight distribution is also important. By way of example, there are models in the CASE fleet where the engine is mounted in the rear and the water tank is mounted to the front (feeding water to both front and rear rollers). This nearly equal weight distribution ensures the same compaction weight going down on the front and rear drum. One of the common mistakes we see, specific to soil compaction, is using too light of a machine, or laying lifts that are too deep. Contractors build deep lifts in the hopes of getting the job done quicker, but the likelihood of soft spots increases if that machine doesn’t have the proper centrifugal forces to compact the entire lift. The contractor then either has to rent or switch out for a larger machine to hit those depths, which ultimately sets job completion further back. It is important to know the realistic capabilities of the equipment you have. Water tank size Water plays an important role in preventing asphalt from sticking to the rollers — get a water tank that allows compaction equipment to run all day without having to stop and fill up, which helps to maximize uptime and productivity. Look for crab offset and curb clearance The ability to offset drums is important for a couple of reasons. When compacting asphalt on a roadway or another large-scale project, it’s important to bind each pass together. By having a compaction machine that allows you to have the rollers either inline or
offset, you’re able to have an overlap of up to about six inches to bind the two passes together. It also helps give you tight turning radiuses for added maneuverability when compacting in confined areas
such as cul-du-sacs. A roller with high curb clearance also helps in terms of maneuverability and is excellent for work in residential or commercial areas by allowing the oper-
Smaller compaction rollers with high curb clearance are ideal for residential and tight commercial areas.
Considering the total width of the project and selecting a drum size accordingly will help optimize total performance and productivity. Bigger isn't always better.
ator to work right up to existing curbs and other low structures. Compaction meters It is now more common to see compaction meters made available from the machine manufacturer. These meters measure the amount of rebound at each drum as they go over an area. If it passes over an area and does not register any rebound during soil compaction, for instance, that lets the operator know they’ve hit a bad area: maybe there’s an old stump or a large rock there, or the moisture content is such that it’s not allowing for compaction. On the contrary, if the meter is registering full rebound, the operator will know to avoid over compaction of that area. The compaction meter helps identify areas that will require added attention prior to testing. Serviceability Look for compaction equipment that has scheduled maintenance and service items in easily accessible locations. This is not only important in terms of convenience, but is also critical should the machine need servicing during the course of a job. When compacting asphalt, it must be compacted while it is at a certain temperature. If the temperature drops too low, the asphalt could be ruined. So if a machine goes down and you can’t service it quickly or get a backup, your job deadline may be at risk. Easy operation and comfort All construction equipment is becoming more operator and user friendly in terms of comfort — important when sitting all day on a compaction machine. Things to look for while sitting in the cab of that machine are visibility to the drums (sloped hoods to the rear are an asset on soil compactors), seat maneuverability (sliding and rotation) within that cab for both forward and backward operation and intuitive controls at your fingertips for adjusting amplitude and frequencies on the fly.

Hey Fred
Fred Ode, CEO/Chairman, Foundation Software
Hey Fred We’re on the cusp of busy season, and all I can remember from last year is how intensive the day to day accounting was. So last month, when I read your column about how construction accounting software can make prevailing wage jobs easier,
I wondered if there were any other ways that it could help take the pain out of busy season. - Jason Hey Jason That’s a great question, and the answer is “absolutely!” Construction accounting software can
make busy season much more manageable in a variety of ways. Here are just a few of the ways that having a construction accounting software package in place for busy season can benefit your construction company. Easily compile certified payroll and other construction reports. As we discussed last month, construction accounting software can make creating certified payroll reports easy. Instead of compiling reports manually in spreadsheets, a good construction ac-
counting software package will allow you to automatically populate these reports in a variety of formats, from the federal level down to the state level. These solutions will also help you complete new hire reports, EEO minority compliance reports, job costing reports (like job labor and job hour variance), workers’ compensation reports, Union tracking and reports, and all kinds of custom reports. Plus, construction accounting software will help you handle the vari-
ety of jobs you take on during busy season, as well as the increased labor force in the field. Progress and other billings. Different vendors and different types of jobs often require different billing formats. Without construction accounting software, you may be putting these formats together manually in spreadsheets. For instance, AIA billings, a type of progress billing, could take quite a bit of time to compile in a spreadsheet, but with construction accounting
software it’s much easier to create them. Job cost reports. One of the most important things a contractor can do is to look at reports to see how each job is doing. Construction accounting software easily lets you view and analyze estimated vs. actual, projected cost, forecasting, cash flow by job and production reports (and more), so that you can access real time data and get a true picture of how each job is going. This will help

BOMAG introduces ECONOMIZER technology for mid-sized BW138AD-5 tandem roller KEWANEE, IL — Bringing compaction measurement technology to mid-size tandem vibratory rollers for the first time, BOMAG introduces the new ECONOMIZER as an optional feature on its BW138AD5 roller. The ECONOMIZER system saves time and money by providing operators with real time data, thereby allowing continuous control of the compaction process. The BW138AD-5 ECONOMIZER uses an acceleration sensor to measure the stiffness of the target material across the entire compacted area. Data from the sensor is instantly displayed via a series of ten yellow LED lights on the roller’s instrument panel. The number of illuminated lights on the LED display increases in conjunction with increased compaction levels, allowing the operator to quickly react to changing conditions and ultimately produce smooth, consistent compaction results. The ECONOMIZER signifies that maximum
compaction has been achieved when the number of illuminated lights does not increase with subsequent roller passes. This technology effectively saves time and money by helping operators avoid making additional passes beyond the point of optimal compaction. Additionally, a red LED light on the display warns of potential over compaction, thereby preventing fractured aggregate. A sudden drop in the number of lit LED lights indicates a weak spot in the material, allowing operators to immediately analyze and remedy that particular area of the project. Powered by a Tier 4i 45.3 hp, water cooled Kubota diesel engine, the BW138AD-5 delivers a maximum centrifugal force of 10,800 pounds. Offering a working width of 54.3-inches, the roller includes larger 35.4-inch diameter drums and provides dual vibration frequencies of 3,480 or 2,820 vpm for more efficient compaction and better surface quality results. Additionally, the
roller’s bolt-on oscillating and articulating joint improves maneuverability by allowing the rear drum to follow the same path as the front drum while turning. A suspended and vibration isolated operator’s platform includes a fully adjustable seat for added comfort, while allowing clear visibility of the drums. Operator efficiency is enhanced with multifunctional dual travel levers and Smart Drive steering wheel that provides more working room and a full view of all machine controls. The BW138AD-5 is equipped with a pressure water sprinkler system that includes a high capacity 81.9 gallon water tank for extended operation intervals between refills. Filtered spray nozzles and automatic interval sprinkler control contribute to water savings, while solid windscreens ensure that the drums receive sufficient coverage even in windy conditions. Flexible, spring actuated scrapers further contribute to optimum
water distribution. Requiring no daily grease points, the roller is very easy to maintain. Its durable composite hood allows efficient access to the engine, while modern circular instrumentation on the dashboard includes warning signals, an hour meter and a fuel level indicator. Accessible lashing rings, a single lifting point and integrated towing hook combine to make transport easy and reduce unloading times. Standard safety features on the BW138AD-5 include foldable ROPS with seat belt, back-up alarm, emergency stop button, and front and rear working lights for night operation. The roller’s engine hood and instrument panel are also lockable to protect against vandalism. For more information on the BW138AD-5 ECONOMIZER or the complete BOMAG Heavy product line, including single drum vibratory

Working around moving equipment can be very dangerous. Did you know that accidents involving heavy equipment have a higher probability of resulting in a fatality than most other types of industrial accidents? It is critical to use safety rules and procedures when operating or working around all heavy equipment. Two of the leading causes of injuries and fatalities are (1) being stuck by a moving machine and (2) machine rollover. In 2011 a total of 472 workers were fatally injured after being struck by objects or equipment, including 219 workers who were struck by falling ob-
jects or equipment and 192 who were struck by powered vehicles or mobile equipment not in normal operation. It is important that everyone have proper training to help identify risks and follow policies and procedures that are in place to help prevent accidents. All workers should receive site specific safety procedures and in hazards they may encounter at the site. A few safety tips to remember: • Always conduct a pre-operation inspection of any equipment before operation; • Never operate equipment in a situation that
you are not qualified; • Provide employees with proper PPE such as hard hats, safety glasses and high visibility reflective vests; • Minimize the number of workers on foot near machinery; • Make sure that all equipment contains the operators’ manual; • ALWAYS wear your seatbelt; • Use equipment that has a ROPS system installed; • Operate the machines at a safe speed; • Report any defects that could create a hazard to your supervisor immediately; • Never jump on or off
the equipment while moving. Climb with three points of contact/hands free; • Before each work shift begins, review and confirm communications signals to be used between equipment operators and workers on foot; • Do not ride as a passenger on equipment or other similar equipment; • Do not approach machinery without first signaling the operator to shut down the equipment and receiving acknowledgment from the operator; and • Workers should be aware of the blind spots
when working near mobile equipment. Operation of heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders, graders, rollers and bulldozers, should always be done by highly skilled operators who have demonstrated the ability and necessary skills to operate the equipment safely. Ground based workers should be trained in how to work safety around the equipment, and how to stay clear. Unsafe practices by either the operator or those around the equipment can create very dangerous situations.
Safety is everyone’s responsibility. It can be easy to rush in order to complete a job or task; however this is when many accidents occur. Worker’s safety should never be compromised in order to finish a job. Take that extra second to put your seatbelt on, and make sure no one is in the way of your equipment, it could save a life! HOUSTON, TX — KOBELCO Construction Machinery USA has made a significant amount of progress in the relaunch of their brand across North America since announcing the company would end its joint venture agreement with CNH at the end of 2012. Its U.S. based headquarters opened in March with the first independently branded KOBELCO excavators arriving in dealer yards just a month later. While these two key milestones were occurring, critical product support operations were underway behind the scenes. “Once our location was selected, we quickly designed our entire parts distribution facility. The layout implemented is conducive to meeting the timely parts fulfillment required in today’s competitive marketplace. Everything from its location to the selection of shelving units to house inventory has been thought through with the many years of industry ex-
perience our management team brings to the table,” states Eric Hoffman, national parts manager for KOBELCO Construction Machinery USA.
Houston serves as an ideal location for KOBELCO’s 53,000-square-foot parts distribution facility. “From a strategic standpoint it provides us with
timely access to a port, major airports and a rail hub, plus serves as a crossroads for many major highway systems. This gives us easy access to var-
ious types of transportation to deliver parts coast to coast as quickly and as cost effectively as possible,” continues Hoffman. KOBELCO

The “why” of pervious concrete by Steve Wagner
A decorative pervious concrete mosaic was put into place days before the demonstration event was held. As an entrant at this year’s Artistry in Decorative Concrete presentation held at the World of Concrete, in Las Vegas, NV, John Bazella spoke to an audience that viewed him on Concreteconstruction.net. Bazella, proprietor of J. Bazella Concrete Construction, Saltsburg, PA, is a hands-on contractor. He knows what he’s talking about! During his presentation, he walked viewers through what his team was doing with decorative
pervious concrete. “We’re doing some decorative, pervious concrete,” he said. “It’s kind of new on the market.” “(Without any amendments) It’s very ugly, unattractive,” he said. “A lot of people don’t like it for that simple reason. We’ve been playing around with it for the past three or four years stamping it, staining it, and making it attractive.” “It’s very difficult to pour, very finicky. It’s all trial
and error because there’s no real standard to it. It’s still pretty much a new product and nobody really knows what it does or what its potentials are,” he said. “Most people want it for storm water management.” “With pervious you need definition,” he added. “We can have a shadow effect with a normal concrete stamp. It’s just like a little cookie cutter that we push through plastic. It kind of rolls in an edge. (That) makes a groove and gives us definition lines.” With that in mind, Bazella recently was featured closer to home. On April 19, PACA hosted a demonstration pour near the Elizabethtown, PA branch of Delaware Valley Concrete Company (DVCC). DVCC Account Executive Jerry Spearing observed one of the main talking points of the process. “It’s a concrete that’s designed to let water penetrate through and return to the ground, into the water table. If you have a foot kind of a building and you have to dig out a detention pond for the water to go in it, this can make your detention pond smaller. You can just use this in your paved areas and the water will go right through the concrete. It solves water run off problems.” “You can color it, use it in a parking lot, a sidewalk, or maybe a check dam next to a water pond. It’s a filter. The cost is not much different than regular concrete. It’s a newer design, and you need to get architects or engineers to recognize and specify it,” he said. “That can be tough because people want to do the things they’ve always done. However, with new water regulations, it’s time has probably come. Getting townships to recognize it is also a lobbying effort, but most of them do recognize it already.” “One of the townships here in Lancaster County had an incident with porous pavers where the
Concrete contractors gathered at the demonstration site to watch how pervious concrete is poured at the jobsite.

product (not pervious concrete) was put in place badly, and the water was not going through,” Spearing remembers. “The township zoning officer had a kneejerk reaction to porous pavers, and said ‘we do not recognize pervious concrete.’ In other words, ‘if this is 100 percent porous and that’s 80 percent porous,’ they don’t recognize it at all. Sometimes it can be solved with demonstrations or perhaps a visit by a consultant, or perhaps even doing a piece of work free for them to show that the work will last. Then come back a year later to show them that it is still performing as it was designed to do.” But this particular zoning officer didn’t want to hear any of that. His mind remained closed. “The biggest concern is durability,” says Ken Crank, PACA director of concrete promotion. ‘Oh, that’s fine; it’ll work in Florida but how is it going to work up here?’ It’s a product that’s really no different than anything else. Attention to detail, quality installation, and quality material. You’re going to have a good durable product.” “With the regulations we’re encountering now, we’re running into townships that are limiting the amount of impervious cover you can have.” At the same time, Crank hastens to point out that bigger is not always better. “I would get more excited by ten small projects than one really big project because there’s less potential for error.” Even so, with logic at the helm, there are those who continue to embrace a ‘this is the way we’ve always done it’ philosophy, shunning this new and practical material. In actuality, the use of pervious concrete has been increasing across the United States in recent years, however quietly. The technology has been around for more than a century; mainly in Europe. When wars made concrete either scarce or too expensive, pervious concrete came to the rescue. Other presenters at the pervious event illustrated the logic and stratagem of this concrete wunderkind. Nearby, at a pervious concrete mosaic placed at an earlier time, Bruce Cody, PACA’s concrete promotion representative, demonstrated how water poured onto an area of the recent decorative pour, plays through drain friendly pervious concrete. This simulates a steady rain or melting of snow on a warm spring day. Cody said that a measured deliberate pouring yields better results. He noted that heavy handed sloshing of water on the surface, takes longer to penetrate and tends to overload the system. For more information on pervious concrete usages, visit the PACA website at www.pacaweb.org.
John Bazella (back to camera) works with an indentified attendee as they move the concrete into place.
Once the patterns have been pressed into the concrete, the design becomes visible.
After placing a plastic tarp over the concrete, the John Bazella stamps a pattern into the pavement.
John Bazella (L) and Bruce Cody (R) use a roller screed to smooth the freshly poured concrete.
The finishing touches are put on the concrete surface before pattern work begins.

Eastern PA Safety Day draws more than 400 workers by Jon M. Casey Organizers for the Pennsylvania 811 One Call System Eastern Safety Day were delighted with the turnout as more than 400 construction workers took time away from the jobsite to attend the May 9 activities at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA. With overcast skies and rain in the area, Dan Lucarelli, director - Marketing and Education for PA One Call System, Inc. said that days like this one provide a good turnout since workers are frequently off because of the weather. He noted that though they may not be on the job this day, it is they who benefit most because the increased safety awareness that they can receive from attending one of these events. It could possibly, one day, save their lives!
Several attendees wait outside the CASE exhibit for the start of the backhoe skills challenge.
Backhoe competitions like this one, gave workers a chance to compete for honor and prizes.
Eric Giguere, Keynote Speaker and a familiar face at events of this kind, shared his personal story of how he was buried alive in a trench collapse and initially found dead beneath the cave-in. After being revived and spending months in recovery and rehabilitation, Giguere found that he was not able to return to his construction career because he still experiences trauma from that tragic experience. As a result, he serves as a spokesperson for trench safety, giving his testimony at events like this around the country. Attendees sat spellbound as he shared how drastically his life has changed, even though he has “fully” recovered. Other activities at this year’s Eastern Safety Day included training seminars by PA One Call personnel, utility training teams and safety equipment specialty people who talked one on one with attendees as they visited indoor and outdoor exhibits. Fun, outdoor activities like the backhoe skill competitions hosted by CASE Equipment, John Deere and JCB, gave workers an opportunity to compete for honor and prizes. Safety and rescue equipment displays like the emergency response equipment truck from the

Ed Dennett uses a portable vacuum excavation system to uncover an underground utility line at an outdoor PECO demonstration. Pottstown Fire Department, offered attendees the chance to see what is involved in coming to the aid of those in need. Lucarelli expressed his gratitude to the sponsors who help support the efforts of PA 811 as they conduct this and two other PA Safety Days each year across the commonwealth. Without their financial support, the construction workers of Pennsylvania would not have these excellent re-
minders to stay safe while digging on the job. In addition to this eastern event, PA 811 Safety Days will be held in the central region on June 13 in York, PA at the York Fair Grounds; and in the western part of the state, September 12 at the Monroeville Convention Center in Monroeville, PA. For more information on the two remaining events, visit the PA One Call website at www.pa1call.org.
Indoor, table top exhibits were a favorite for the more than 400 workers who attended the Safety Day event.

New Volvo P7110 and P7170 pavers provide industry leading precision New Volvo pavers — tracked P7110 or wheeled P7170 — provide operators with maximum versatility to suit the needs of any job; delivering the power, precision and quality that highway paving contractors demand. Volvo pavers are known for their high quality output, and the new P7000 series pavers — born from the Blaw-Knox legacy — are no exception. Powered by a Volvo 235 hp Tier 4i compliant D8 engine, the P7110 and P7170 are more efficient than previous models, with decreased engine emissions and increased fuel efficiency. The engine’s diesel particulate filter (DPF) and active, semi-automatic regeneration process work without interruption, maximizing machine performance and productivity. Starting the paver in cold weather is made easier thanks to an available pump decoupler that disengages non-essential pumps for more consistent startups. The P7110 and P7170 are powerfully precise, with a four sensor feed system that automatically regulates the delivery and flow of material to match paver speed, ensuring smooth, even paving. With the simple press of a button, the driver and screed operator can extend hydraulically powered, two stage tunnels, which offer concise control of material flow across the paving width, resulting in a high quality mat. Flow gates, as well as other options, are available to tailor machines to meet individual contractor’s needs. Blaw-Kote® protective coating prevents asphalt from sticking to vital components, providing better machine wear and longer life. The P7110 and P7170 pavers offer near 360 degree visibility, giving operators a safe, all around view of the paving process for greater comfort and confidence. The signature low, single level platform permits the operator to move freely, easily and safely. Large
steps, handrails and antislip plates allow the operator to access and exit the platform safely. Dual rotating, tiltable consoles deliver greater versatility, allowing operators to choose from which side of the machine they prefer to operate. Operator productivity is improved with adjustable seats that can be extended beyond the edge of the paver, offering improved visibility and comfort. Steering on the tracked P7110 is controlled by two levers on each seat console, while the steering wheel maneuvers the wheeled P7170. Controls are intuitively clustered by function for ease of use and are backlit for night use or low light conditions. The P7110 and P7170 SmokEater® fume extraction system removes fumes at 83 percent efficiency without obstructing the operator’s view into the auger channel. Fumes are captured and conveyed from the auger channel, moved through the paver and exit through the integral exhaust/fumes stack. Smooth operator Industry leading screeds on the P7110 and P7170 deliver high density levels, helping roller compaction, resulting in a high quality, uniform mat. A variety of front and rear hydraulically extendable Volvo screeds are available for paving applications, as well as bolt-on extensions for wide paving applications. Paving efficiency is enhanced on these models with a large, 12 ton capacity hopper, which works in conjunction with independently controlled conveyors and augers to ensure a consistent flow of material to the screed. Synchronized folding, hydraulic front hopper wings deliver material to the conveyor system, minimizing material segregation. Hydrostatic drives for the independently controlled conveyors and augers ensure material is moved evenly to both sides of the
screed. Each conveyor has a reverse feature which helps control material and assist in cleanup. Proportional auger speed control and hydraulic auger height adjustments provide an optimal head of material in the auger channel. The large volume of asphalt throughput supports continuous production, regardless of paving width, thickness or speed. Maintenance on these models is made easy with ground level accessibility to service points and wide opening service doors on the deck surface. Machine lifetime and productivity are further enhanced through a variety of customer service support channels. Customer Service Agreements are available, which provide customers with maximum cost control and minimum downtime. Access is also made available to the Volvo Road Institute, a program which, for nearly 50 years, has provided customers with relevant educational content delivered by industry experts, helping customers maximize productivity and machine performance. As with all Volvo products, the P7110 and P7170 pavers are backed by an extensive service network that provides the peace of mind that comes with an experienced worldwide network of technicians, workshops and dealers.
