Ravi Singh, quarry manager for ReadyMix (W.I.), said, “DUO and Terex thoroughly investigated the product to be processed; analyzing it thoroughly and from this, custom designed a plant most suited to our individual needs. In addition they offered a dedicated team of engineers, sales and after sale technicians that provided support throughout the plant installation and commissioning process.” The plant consists of an H 9 feeder, 206R screenbox and an FM 200 C cyclone. This along with a 146 dewatering screen, a PS 200R logwasher, a 165D dry screen, two lattice frame feed conveyors and four TC 4026 conveyors, all work together to achieve the desired grades. “This new plant replaced an existing barrel type washing plant,” he said. “The maintenance costs on the old plant were extremely high. That made it less cost effective for processing. With the new TWS equipment, there are much lower maintenance costs. The system’s maximum efficiency and productivity ultimately allows us to be much more competitive in the market. The newly designed plant also allows us to get a cleaner, more desirable product.” Washplant setup Natural clay bound sand and gravel feed material is first delivered to a H 9 feeder vibrating grid which removes the 100m-plus material. The inclined lattice frame feed conveyor, designed and built by DUO’s manufacturing division, then delivers the material to our 206R two deck rinsing screen to get an initial effective grading. At this stage, the top deck removes the plus-75mm material which is stockpiled using a TC4026 conveyor. The bottom deck removes the 6mm - 75mm material, while the material below 6mm is pumped into a FM 200C cyclone, where a 0-6mm instantly salable sand is produced. The Terex FM 200C cyclone is a sand recovery unit with a centrifugal slurry pump, twin hydrocyclones, a collection tank and a 14 x 6 dewatering screen. It is capable of producing one or two grades of sand, however in this particular plant configuration, the customer has opted for one grade.

Due to the high and varied levels of silt content in the material, the aggregates require additional scrubbing to help ensure it is cleaned to specification. This is achieved through a PS 200R washer unit. This system is specifically designed to work in the recycling industry. Its versatility and design enables it to be easily adapted to work in gravel applications. Dewatering screens are fitted to either end of the machine, which consists of a trough and two spiral axles, counter rotating to each other, with exchangeable blades to intensively scrub the feed material. Friction from this pro process breaks down clay conglomerates and allows scrubbed material to be stockpiled. Once the aggregates pass through the PS 200R washer, they are then discharged onto a second DUO lattice frame conveyor. These 6mm - 75mm aggregates are delivered onto a onto a 165D - two deck dry screen to achieve a three way split: classifying material into the customers desired grades, 6-10mm, 10-20mm and 20-75mm. At this point the wash plant uses settling ponds for its dirty water. Dirty water from the FM plant, which contains material below 75 micron (silts/clays), is sent to a series of ponds. The ponds are set up so that the silt drops to the bottom and clean water weirs over the top. That produces clean, reusable water. The entire plant is controlled and monitored from a central PLC electrical control panel housed within an ISO 20 foot container. The panel is programmed for automated start up and shut down sequences and was fully wired and programmed before leaving the factory. “The plant consists of one simple neat control panel,” said Singh. “That makes the operation side of the plant very simple and compact.” Singh said it was evident right from the start of the process that the knowledge and expertise that DUO and TWS brought to the table made selecting a DUO/TWS washplant, easy. During the consultation process of the plant, DUO organized visits to other leading quarries in Trinidad, who have been using Terex Washing Systems for years and who had proven quality and cost savings. “We are extremely impressed and excited about the prospects of this new Terex washplant,” said Singh. “It is currently operating at 200 tons per hour. We can firmly say this is the largest project the company has embarked on for a long time and undoubtedly the most successful in terms of production. The entire team involved in the project at Readymix (W.I.) has been extremely impressed with all aspects of the plant, from its initial conception through to the final product. That includes the ongoing consultation, engineering, service and after sales support from both DUO and TWS.” “What was also particularly appealing is the availability of spare parts if required and in addition the direct face to face contact we had with both DUO and TWS,” Singh concluded. “The level of service was second to none throughout the installation and final commissioning of the plant.” To find out more or to discuss specific washing requirements, contact us at TWS.Sales@terex.com or view the full product offering at our website, www.terex.com/washing.

Alex Moss, managing director, DUO Plc; Walter Gosein, sales contractor, Melajo Quarry Operations; Ravi Singh, quarry manager, Ready Mix (W.I); Luke Talbot, international sales manager DUO Plc and Fergal McPhillips, sales manager, Terex Washing Systems are delighted with the clean material coming from the new wash plant.
DUO and Terex make for a winning team by Jon M. Casey As a long standing distributor for both Terex and Powerscreen products, DUO has extensive product and application knowledge. This benefits clients in several ways. From the design of the system, the installation and commissioning to the after sales support, this blend of experience and quality products together with DUO’s ‘the customer comes first’ attitude, makes them the dependable, successful company they are today. Luke Talbot, international sales manager for DUO, said, “We were delighted when Readymix selected DUO as their preferred supplier for the washplant. This reinforces the success of our previous projects installed in this market and shows the strength of our reputation in the region. The new plant has been very well received and will certainly add a new dimension and increased efficiency to their overall production.” Readymix’s Ravi Singh noted, “DUO did not just sell us a plant, they thoroughly investigated the material that we wanted to process. The decision making process was aided through visiting other sites and quarries to see similar plant setup as well as a visit to the TWS factory in Dungannon, Northern Ireland. This was an invaluable trip as we could clearly see that TWS was very focused on quality, performance and was particularly organized and professional in their approach.” DUO supplied a comprehensive set of civil engi-
neering drawings that allowed for site work to be carried out well in advance of the plant arriving on site. The AutoCAD and 3D drawings pinpointed where each piece of equipment would sit on the concrete plinth. The drawings also showed details for electrical conduits, fresh water supply and dirty water disposal. “The installation was very fast and efficient, which we were pleasantly surprised about, considering the complexity of the plant,” said Singh. “It was delivered and installed in a very short time frame, which ultimately reduced the overall costs.” Following a recent trip to the Trinidad site, Fergal McPhillips, sales manager TWS, said, “The plant is effectively addressing Readymix’s problems. It is achieving excellent results. By being much more efficient while generating outstanding commercial output, it helps them deal with the demands of the construction market.” Sean Loughran, director of TWS also noted, “The Trinidad sand and gravel washplant is a demonstration of yet another complex plant offered by DUO and TWS. It operates at 200tph and is much more efficient than Readymix’s previous plant. Ultimately, it produces a more desirable product.” “DUO’s specialist team of engineers, applications and technicians, offer after-sales support as well,” he went on to say. “From its initial conception through to final commissioning, our engineering team was there to support them.”
Superior Industries, North America’s only combination manufacturer of conveyor systems and their related components, launched its latest material handling solution to help ship loading applications reduce downtime at ports and terminals. Called the Stingray™ Mobile Shiploader, the portable unit greatly reduces downtime by trimming multiple hatches from one feed point. “Repositioning a ship loader’s feed point or loading hopper cuts off the material flow from loader to ship, resulting in costly downtime,” says Vice President of Engineering Bob Domnick. “Our goal is to reduce the number of times a feed point needs to be moved and then speed the time it takes when relocation is required.” Telescopic conveyor Superior Industries first introduced telescopic conveyor technology into its products back in
1997. Since then, the 40 year old company has manufactured almost 1,000 conveyors equipped with the technology. In marine terminal applications, the Stingray Mobile Shiploader’s telescopic conveyor allows the equipment to extend an additional 30 percent. This means the new shiploader reaches out to multiple hatches from the same feed point. In addition, while positioned over a hatch, extension and retraction of the telescopic conveyor means fully trimmed hatches. “We know of one client who compared a unit without this conveyor technology to one of our telescopic units,” says Domnick. “According to their load sequence, our telescopic conveyor reduced the amount of moves required to load their vessel from 35 to seven.” Increased mobility In addition, Superior says a commitment to
conveyor mobility is another variable for accelerated load times. Each Stingray Mobile Shiploader is manufactured with expanded mobility packages at both the feed point or tail of the conveyor and at its radial or drive tires. Often manufactured with track technology, portability at the shiploader’s feed-point allows for rapid relocation from hold to hold and simplifies movement on, off and throughout a terminal or port. In addition to the 360 degree rotation at the tail, the conveyor’s drive tires are equipped to move inline, transversely and radially. “We have invested a lot of time into products that focus on conveyor mobility,” says Domnick. “In fact, our founder started this business after seeing a need for better portable conveying equipment. Since then, we have manufactured more than 5,000 mobile conveyors.” Cambered profile
New to Superior, says the company, is a camber or slight arch shape to the conveyor’s structure. This allows the Stingray Mobile Shiploader to maintain a tight clearance between the conveyor and the deck of the vessel. This design benefits owners because it reduces the shiploader’s drop height to eliminate dust, preserve material integrity and reduce the length of discharge chutes, a costly component. Marine duty Lastly, Superior says it is intentionally armed with a massive engineering department to work closely with clients on custom, individual applications and specifications. Common to any port or terminal client, local environment plays a crucial role in how each shiploader is individually designed. Common components and conveyor enhancements include galvanized or epoxy finishes, belt covers, dust suppres-
sion/extraction systems, onboard power, remote controls, spillage defense, telescopic chutes, hoppers and a multitude of other options. Superior’s experience includes engineering and manufacturing work of some of the most complexly engineered conveyors, including the world’s highest capacity mobile telescopic radial travel conveyor. The 72-inch wide by 190-foot long unit moves 5,000 tons per hour (TPH) at the Port of Tampa in Tampa, FL. The first Stingray Mobile Shiploader is designed for Panamax vessels, but can be altered to accommodate other dimensions of dry bulk vessels and barges. Superior Industries has a reputation of engineering and manufacturing
bulk groundbreaking, material handling conveyors and cutting edge conveyor components. From its headquarters in Minnesota, the 40 year old manufacturer supplies stackers, transfer conveyors, feed systems, ship loaders; plus idlers, pulleys and accessories to lower operating costs and increase production. The company manufactures from additional plants in Arizona and Georgia. Contact Superior Industries at 315 East Highway 28, Morris, MN 56267. Call 320-5892406 or e-mail info@superior-ind.com. PEORIA, IL — For the first time in its long history of innovating rear eject technologies for truck bodies, Philippi-Hagenbuch, Inc. (PHIL) has developed a body specifically for haul trucks that will never be used above ground. PHIL’s heavy duty rear eject bodies are ideal for underground applications, such as mining, which require equipment that can take a
beating, operate in low clearance environments and handle multiple types of loads. To develop the new, heavy duty underground body, PHIL pulled from decades of engineering experience in designing Rear Eject Bodies for all makes and models of haul trucks for nearly every major industrial market. In addition to mining, PHIL Rear Eject
Bodies are operating in the construction, steel, power and landfill industries. The company’s technology also has been used on dump trucks in underground gold, silver and oil shale operations since 2000. PHIL used feedback from those customers to create bodies that specifically address their unique challenges. PHIL’s rear eject technology provides a con-
stantly low center of gravity that allows operators to use their haul trucks in ways that were not previously possible. For example, rear eject bodies can discharge material on the fly for quick spreading and grading. Operators also can dump loads uphill when backed up to an incline because the ejector blade effortlessly pushes the load out of the back of the truck.
PHIL designed its Rear Eject Bodies for rugged underground mining conditions and with a priority on simplistic design that requires little maintenance and downtime. Built from the most consistent 450 Brinnell steel available, the bodies provide strength, capacity and durability. As a result, they steadily deliver some of the lowest maintenance costs per ton hauled. PHIL heavy duty rear eject bodies feature heftier construction to withstand the bumps and bangs of underground environments. The design incorporates minimal hydraulics, resulting in less truck body maintenance. In addition, automatic tailgates lower mechanically with the movement of the ejector blade, and the roller free system provides a simple, self-centering ejector blade that doesn’t require ongoing lubrication. PHIL also has standardized Crodon™ hydrophobic steel that is selectively placed on the ejector blade to practically eliminate material carryback. Crodon is already being used in PHIL rear eject bodies in South America and has proven
to shed sticky material with ease. PHIL customizes within the baseline design so each body meets each customer’s site specific needs and requirements. Whether it is a height or width restriction, allowing for greater mass, withstanding projectile impacts or sizing the body to match the specific material, PHIL’s tailored approach leads to greater efficiency. Philippi-Hagenbuch, Inc., Peoria, IL, can engineer a solution for every application where an ejector body is needed. PHIL rear eject bBodies are available for almost every underground haul truck and articulated dump truck and as new or replacement bodies. Screening more than 35 different products, Sundre uses Flex-Mat 3 in at least five of six screen decks at all times. by: Gary Pederson, vice president of sales for Major Wire Industries Limited in Candiac, Quebec, Canada. amily owned and operated since 1978, Sundre Contracting Co. understands the importance of delivering a quality product. The operation, located in Sundre, Alberta, Canada, produces more than 30 different product sizes — from 1/16-inch fine sand to 12-inch screened rock and everything in between. Whether its customer is an Alberta road builder, concrete plant or any of a number of golf courses in Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan, its products must meet tight specifications or be rejected. Dealing with severe screen media blinding and pegging from clay material and a rainy climate, Sundre needed an advanced solution. After exploring
F
Flex-Mat 3 eliminated the blinding Sundre was experiencing due to the material's high moisture content.
several screen media options, the operation found one that helped eliminate the production crippling effects of these conditions, ultimately saving them thousands while waiting for Mother Nature to cooperate. One instance of Sundre’s success with this advanced screen media is evident in a challenging road job it accepted. Using two 6-foot x 20-foot ELRUS screen decks equipped with conventional woven wire screen media, the operation needed to screen the 3/4-inch minus aggregate from the customer’s own highly clay contaminated pit. With the addition of rain every second day, the operation was quickly losing quality because screen media throughput was being compromised. In addition, production time was significantly reduced due to the need to frequently shut down and clean the screens. “The wet, sticky nature of the material was causing severe blinding and pegging of the woven wire on our first screen deck,” stated Jason Harder, manager of operations at Sundre Contracting. “In order to meet customer material spec, we needed to dry the material, which took time away from producing new, profitable material.” It was impossible to effectively screen while it was raining because it only added to the stickiness of the material, so Harder knew they needed another solution. The operation tried a variety of woven wire and self-cleaning screen media options, but all were still experiencing severe blinding and pegging. At the recommendation of Matt Armstrong, dealer representative at ELRUS Aggregate Systems, Harder installed Major Wire 7/8-inch Flex-Mat® 3 Series D Tensioned screen media and saw dramatic results. “The operation went from not being able to produce at all in marginally rainy weather to being able to operate through heavy downpours,” commented Armstrong. “We’ve recommended Major Wire’s Flex-
Mat 3 screen media before and knew it could stand up to the challenge of screening sticky, clay-ridden material.” Good vibrations Major Wire’s Flex-Mat 3 self-cleaning screen media allows producers to increase open area, create more screening action and eliminate blinding and pegging problems to achieve more throughput of spec material. Its distinctive lime green polyurethane strips bond individual wires, allowing them to vibrate independently at different frequencies. An increase in screening action was just what the Sundre operation needed. More properly sized material fell through instead of sticking to the wire, increasing production by 100 percent on rainy days since the operation no longer needed to shut down and clean the screens. Using Flex-Mat 3 Tensioned screen media, Sundre screens between 250 and 300 tons per hour, depending on the product it is making. That is a savings of nearly 2,000 to 2,400 tons per day that the operation would be losing to rain delays. Harder estimates that using Flex-Mat 3 during this particularly rainy month saved the operation at least 100 hours of production time previously lost due to the need to shut down and clean the screens. A versatile screening solution Sundre uses Flex-Mat 3 screen media on at least five of its six screen decks in a variety of positions, depending on the material being screened. The operation also utilizes several Flex-Mat 3 wire configurations and opening sizes — from 3/16 inch to 7/8 inch — to properly screen the wide range of products it offers customers. For example, the operation uses 7/16-inch Flex-Mat 3 Series D Tensioned screen media in its McCloskey mobile vibratory screener to prescreen various sand products. The Series D configuration provides Sundre with precise sizing of

passing material so it can produce the spec material needed by various customers. To screen larger aggregate material, Sundre uses 3/8-inch stainless steel Flex-Mat 3 Series LFM Tensioned screen media. “We love the versatility of Flex-Mat 3,” stated Harder. “We make more than 30 different products in our operation, from golf course sand, to concrete and road base aggregates and decorative stone. Flex-Mat 3 helps us screen and wash all products more efficiently and saves us thousands in lost production each year. In addition, we estimate that its increase in open area provides us with up to 30 percent more screening capacity than before.” Flex-Mat 3 screen media has also helped Sundre cut costs in other areas. For example, previously, when screening its coarser products, such as 3/4inch minus aggregate material, the operation was using a wash plant to screen off the sand that was causing blinding and pegging issues in the dry screening process. This required a large volume of water usage. Flex-Mat 3’s vibrating wire technology has virtually eliminated this blinding and pegging problem-which means most of the sand does not need to be sent through the wash plant, helping Sundre reduce its annual water usage. While the wash plant deck is still used to clean many different products, this has immensely reduced the quantity of silt heading to their settling pond. Before, it was necessary to clean and drain the settling pond many times a season. Now that Flex-Mat 3 has reduced the amount of silt in the product when it reaches the wash plant, they are able to spend more valuable time screening instead of cleaning. “We’ve not seen any type of screen media work better than this,” says Harder. “Major Wire seems to have this technology wrapped up and it will remain a staple in our operation.
Using Flex-Mat 3, Sundre is able to screen between 250 and 300 TPH, depending on the product they are making.
Sundre uses Flex-Mat 3 Series D Tensioned screen media on the top deck of its wash plant deck to increase production.
Curved tension bar decreases screen media wear life.
Install it right the first time Sundre Contracting solved its screening challenges using Flex-Mat 3 Tensioned screen media, but noted that no matter what brand you choose — if screen media is not installed properly, it will slow down an operation and hurt product quality, production and profit. “Matt Armstrong came out to our plant the first time we ordered Flex-Mat 3 from ELRUS,” said Harder. “He helped us install the new screen media correctly so we could get the best results possible, and showed our team how to do the same, so when our next order arrived we would know what to do.” The two most common types of tensioned screen media are Flex-Mat type and woven wire. Here are some installation tips Major Wire and Matt Armstrong recommend for each: Flex-Mat type (self-cleaning) Prior To Installation: • Check for proper tensioning system and correct installation of tension bar; • Ensure that crown bar is fully engaged in “U” channel rubber and is consistent in height; • Ensure clamp rails are not worn thin, bent or deformed; • Ensure clamp rails are the same length as the screen media; • In bolt type tensioning systems: • Check the rail design and height of bolt holes; • Check for missing bolts (replace if broken or missing); • Clean the rail and hook edge thoroughly; and • Check for cracks, broken welds and loose bolts on screen box or deck (fix if necessary) During Installation: • Ensure clamp rails are not overlapping multiple panels, but fit each panel; • Side tension systems: Ensure there is a .750-inch space between the wall and the outside of the hooks; • Align polyurethane strips perfectly on all crown bar supports, making sure they lie flat on the bars when tightened; • If equipped with overlaps, place overlaps on top of preceding screen media starting at the discharge end; • Stretch Flex-Mat type screen media “tight as a drum”; • Do not over tighten when using an impact wrench
on wire diameters less than .148-inches; and • Check tension: the heavy end of a screwdriver or hammer should bounce easily on the screen media. Woven wire Before You Install: • Look for significant damage to crown bars and screen decks; • Inspect the crown bar rubber for damage and wear (replace if necessary); • Ensure the crown bar rubber is the same type and height and covers all of the crown rails; • Make sure side clamp rails are not worn thin, bent or have curves or “dimples” where the clamp rail bolts come through; • Ensure the side clamp rails equal the length of the screen media or they will cause uneven tensioning; • Check crown bar height by doing the string test; and • Remove all material buildup from the hook ledge on the pan side of the screen box and/or the crown bar rubber. For Proper Installation: • Make sure the screen media has the correct outside and inside hook width for the deck; • Ensure that the ends of the screen media panels fit together tightly to prevent the passing of oversize material; • Make sure the lengths of all screen media “tail ends” don’t exceed more than 50 percent of the opening size where they meet; • Side tension screen boxes: position the screen media so clearance from the pan side to the hook is even on both sides; • Tension your screen media by tightening the bolts intermittently from both sides ; and • Once installed, make sure all screen media is seated properly on all crown bar tops and the side clamp rails match the length of the screen media. Conduct frequent inspections Once you have properly installed your screen media, conduct daily inspections before startup and after shutdown. Make sure that your screen media and screen boxes are free of unnecessary wear, breakage or damage. Catching problems ahead of time can save thousands in costly fixes later.
D U N G A N N O N , NORTHERN IRELAND — Terex Washing Systems (TWS) is making final plans to unveil a new innovative washing system, one which is sure to become a global market leader — The AggreSand system. This is the latest edition to an already extensive product portfolio and is due to be officially launched in quarter 2,
2013. Terex® AggreSand system combines aggregate washing and screening with sand processing on a modular chassis. It brings together tried and trusted Terex Washing Systems components in an innovative modular design, setting itself apart from other washing systems in the marketplace. A gap in the market for such a washing evolution
was identified following extensive research, part of which was conducted at the Terex Washing Systems first ever product development forums. This involved TWS engineers and sales technicians working with the global distributor network to formulate the concept. Central to the development of the new plant was a modular de-
sign, pre-wired and preplumbed making it quick and easy to setup and easy to maintain. The plant also includes a range of other innovative features and designs. Sean Loughran, director of TWS commented “The AggreSand system will represent the epitome of washing in the marketplace and is a combination of significant en-
hancements and design changes to existing products as well as the introduction of new pioneering ideas. In our ongoing efforts to meet and exceed customer expectations, the AggreSand system will enable TWS customers to wash a wide range of materials at a high specification and produce up to five products.” AggreSand System key features and benefits H 12 Hopper — TWS designed a new modular hopper feeder with 12m3 capacity in keeping with ever increasing loading shovel sizes in today’s modern quarries and sand pits. The H 12 is available with an automatic tipping grid and a 12-foot two deck vibrating grid complete with variable speed belt feeder, all controlled from the main operator interface and radio control unit. Feed Conveyor — The wide feed conveyor has a direct drive electric motor and gearbox arrangement and will work at a 19 degree angle when feeding the AggreSand system. The inclined feed conveyor features an innovative sealed wash box at the discharge point to give material a pre-rinse to pre-condition for screening. The innovative design eliminates splashing at this point and produces an even distribution of material to the full width of the rinsing screen thus utilizing the full screening area. 165R-3 Rinsing Screen — TWS opted for the highly efficient 165R-3 (three deck, two bearing) rinsing screen. The screen’s riveted construction reduces the stress associated with welded construction methods. TWS engineers designed this in such a way to isolate the spray bars from all vibration, utilizing high quality rubber gators on the mid and bottom decks. Top deck rubber extensions also prevent overspill or splashing from the top deck screen. The 165R-3 gives a true 80-squarefoot of screening area on all three decks. Each deck has eight individually controlled spray bars fitted with polyurethane fan type spray nozzles.
An advanced rolling chute arrangement gives the ability to blend top deck and mid deck overflows as well as mid deck and bottom deck overflows which will prove very useful in construction and demolition recycling applications. The screen is designed to receive standard polyurethane modular screens (woven wire screens option also available) on all decks. Sump Tank — The large capacity split sump tank receives the rinsed fines from the bottom deck screen into either a course or fine compartment. The course side of the tank has a built-in float system to help equalize the levels in both tanks and prevent overflowing. Large inspection doors are included in both tanks as well as butterfly valve drains on both sides. The tank is also fitted with anti-turbulence plates and a pump protection system. Centrifugal Slurry Pumps & Hydrocylones Two centrifugal slurry pumps (Course & Fine) are used to pump material from both sides of the sump tank into two hydrocyclones. The hydrocyclones remove silts and clay (material below 63micron) which are sent to the water treatment plant. The heavier material (above 63micron) exits the bottom of the hydrocyclones into a rubberlined box where blending can take place if required. 125 Dewatering Screen — The underflow from the hydrocyclones transfers onto a dewatering screen via a discharge box which equally distributes the material across the screen to increase the dewatering screen area. Both materials are dewatered over a 500 micron polyurethane screen to produce two instantly salable grades of sand. The high energy dewatering screen is fitted with two high efficiency counter rotating vibratory motors which remove capillary water to produce two dewatered sands. The rubber lined catchbox under the dewatering screen carries the underflow back to

TWS has utilized PLC technology which has already been field proven within the wider Terex crushing and screening plants. The control system will provide measurement and control in terms of belt speed, water pressure, pump pressures, etc. This will include full radio control of all critical functions such as auto start/stop, feeder start/stop and speed control. Full telemetry is supplied as an option where all data is sent to the plant owner remotely such as belt tonnages, alarm conditions, run times etc. Easy Setup — The AggreSand system encompasses tried and trusted Terex components in an innovative modular set up. The AggreSand sys-
tem is designed specifically to provide quick installation and deployment with one connecting power point and one water feed point for the entire plant. Set up time will typically be one day making the plant ideal for long or short term contracts. The AggreSand system has an economic water requirement and is ideal for coupling to a TWS water treatment plant to recycle this water thus reducing the overall water requirement. The plant was designed to have a small footprint, also reducing the requirement for major ground preparation work. Ease of Transport — All components are designed so they can be easily dismantled and placed into standard 40foot containers, limiting the reassembly time on site with fewer crane lifts required. Over the past century, process improvement work has morphed from simple tools and methods used at Ford Motor Company to complex methodologies like Six Sigma and Lean. Companies have invested millions of dollars in improvement initiatives through the decades, expecting big returns for their efforts. If these methodologies represent accepted “recipes for change,” why do improvement gains continue to fall short of expectations? Why do management teams continue to make promises about change to the board of directors or the senior team that they can’t keep? What keeps sabotaging efforts to change performance and culture? There are not 20 answers to these questions. There are not even 10. Only a few factors are responsible for “improvement sabotage.” You might be surprised to find out that they ALL originate within the management system, either within decision tools and processes or inside the management team. When we decide to change, first we analyze business
processes to gain process knowledge and confirm process weaknesses. Second, we design and implement process changes, conduct training and expect benefits to materialize. If they don’t materialize, it’s not because the benefits weren’t there to capture (in most cases). “Collisions” happening behind the scenes are often responsible for the shortfall. Collisions occur daily at every mine, plant and corporate office. We are not talking about haul trucks colliding in the pit, water trucks colliding on the tailings dam or delivery trucks colliding in the warehouse parking lot. These collisions don’t require an incident report or investigation by a federal agency. They are virtual, impact the bottom line and culture, and are a natural part of the change process. So… what is a collision? A collision occurs when change bumps up against the management system — either management processes or the management team. Because collisions are outside the scope of change initiatives, they are either over-
looked or are viewed as accepted barriers to change that are difficult to remove. Here’s the important point: Management’s response to a collision is the key to success or failure with change. Why? Because management’s response to a collision forms the culture. You might be thinking “Kay, you just changed the subject. You were talking about change and now you are talking about culture.” Actually, I am still on the same topic. Did you know that culture is what makes change possible? Culture (not equipment) optimizes performance and grants access to hidden capacity. Culture determines the success of projects and even affects project contingencies. Culture determines if problems are solved or ignored and if departments collaborate or work as silos. If you understand how culture impacts performance and change, then you will understand the barriers that steal improvement gains and make change harder than it should be. Here’s how collisions form culture: Each man-
The People Side of Improvement by Kay Sever agement response to a collision “shifts the culture” in one direction or the other (i.e., reactive or proactive). This shift “frees or traps” profits and “promotes or hinders” change. There is no middle ground here — no gray area where management’s response yields a neutral result. If we were sitting in a room together talking about collisions, you could come up with many examples that have impacted your efforts to improve performance or change culture. Each story would illustrate management’s unintended impact on change, an impact that goes unmeasured and unreported, and may only be discussed behind closed doors. Many companies struggle with change because they have little or no awareness of collisions and their impact on change. Learning how to “manage collisions”: • Arms management teams with mindsets and skillsets that create the intended result with change; • Gives companies a competitive advantage
because they can change a lot faster; and • Is an effective strategy for optimizing equipment performance, reducing costs, managing projects, solving problems and transforming culture. Thought for the Month: Management’s greatest contribution to change lies in the ability to recognize collisions and intentionally respond to create a great result. Kay Sever is an industry leader in performance optimization and change acceleration. After studying success and failure with change for years, she discovered that management teams have been “short changed” in the change process for decades. Management’s role in change has been too narrowly defined, given the impact that management teams have on the change process. To fill this important void,
Kay created The ‘Change Revelation,’ a unique management training “experience” that sets the stage for performance optimization and prepares management teams for amazing success with change. This training program reveals management’s barriers to change (including collisions) and teaches strategies to remove those barriers. Once management teams learn the truth about change, they never go back to their old way of thinking! See MiningOpportunity.com and TheChangeRevelation.com for details on her services and contact information. Look for her books “Building An Opportunity Culture,” “TRUTH, TRUST & TONS” and “The Performance Culture Connection,” available on her websites under products.
Atlas Copco launches FlexiROC T30 R COMMERCE CITY, CO — Atlas Copco has launched the FlexiROC T30 R radio remote control tophammer drill rig equipped with either a COP 1240 or COP 1640 drill for 2 to 3.5-inch holes. The standard hydraulic carousel-type rod handling system uses 12-foot rods. The carousel carries four rods for a maximum drilling depth of 57-feet. The FlexiROC T30 R comes with an interim Tier 4 Cummins QSB4.5 turbo charged engine providing improved diesel consumption over its predecessor, the ROC D3 RRC. The rig’s low center of gravity and high ground clearance provide mobility over the most challenging terrain. It is well suited to demanding construction or small to medium size quarrying jobs. The FlexiROC T30 R can also handle specialized tasks such as installing self-drilling anchors, drilling blastholes in hard rock and dimensional stone quarrying.
Maurice Hunter, Atlas Copco business line manager, said the FlexiROC T30 R rig’s extended boom coverage of 14-feet through an 80 degree radius was designed to save time and money by delivering more holes from fewer setups. The FlexiROC T30 R’s compact size means the FlexiROC T30 R can easily be transported from job to job, allowing contractors to maximize the availability of their investment, said Hunter. The FlexiROC T30 R crawler drill rig was designed to be one of the safest drill rigs in its class. Radio remote control comes standard, allowing the operator full control of drilling, tramming and boom controls from a safe working distance on confined sites or unstable terrain. The new rig was also designed to improve efficiency. Automatic RPM reduction, adjustable fan speeds and interim Tier 4 emissions offer further savings and improved efficiency.

Managing collisions: A new strategy for successful change

Sandvik DPi drill rigs wow Quebec contractor Quebec headquartered Canadian drilling and blasting contractor, Castonguay Blasting, has been operating for over 40 years and has become one of the biggest contractors of its type across the whole of Canada. As such it has one of the largest surface drilling fleets in the country and its managers and operators thus have considerable experience with all kinds of drill rigs - and some of the newest, and most praised rigs in the company’s fleet are their Sandvik DP1500i units. The company now operates four of these top of the range drills in the Sandvik DPi series of drill rigs and could be looking for more to fuel expansion. Castonguay prides itself on being able to handle the most challenging drill and blast projects from quarrying, to open pit mining to construction work and its clients have come to depend on its professional approach of managing projects safely and effectively. As an industry leader, Castonguay is continually striving to develop new technologies to provide the surface drilling and blasting industry with safer, more productive and economical means of completing each project in a timely manner. As such
the performance, reliability and cost effectiveness of the drill rigs in its fleet are of paramount importance and both Castonguay management and rig operators are hugely complimentary about its Sandvik DPi units. In the quarrying sector, armed with 40 years of quarry experience, Castonguay works hand in hand with each quarry operator to ensure that the finished product conforms to the desired dimensions. Due to the proximity of some quarries to populated areas; Castonguay utilizes state of the art seismic monitoring systems to record noise and seismic activity produced by the effects of blasting and very precise drilling can be key to achieving this. With accurate and dependable tracking, quarry operators can effectively meet or exceed regulated standards and still optimize productivity. Graymont’s Marbleton limestone quarry in Quebec is no exception. This is one of the oldest quarries in Canada and supplies Graymont’s major Marbleton lime plant located near the site. Quarry production is some two million tonnes of rock (primarily a relatively soft limestone) a year and it relies on Castonguay’s Sandvik DP1500i rigs and their operators to produce
this with no hassle and extremely economically making full use of the fuel saving attributes built into the rig’s design. The quarry achieves its high production level while only operating on a single shift basis five days a week and manages 2527m of drilling an hour. Many quarries rely on DTH rigs for their drilling, but Castonguay’s Sandvik DP1500i tophammer units have been found to outperform comparable DTH rigs in the Castonguay fleet in terms of drilling performance, precision and in particular in fuel economy - of major significance for operators today in this time of rapidly rising oil prices. The Sandvik DPi series of drills has now been on the market for around four to five years and was developed from the very successful Tamrock Pantera line of surface drills. Sandvik reports that general customer feedback is that these units outperform their previous generation both in productivity and fuel economy. Operators are particularly happy with the working environment the enclosed cab provides in terms of both soundproofing and visibility, while the intelligent control system makes for much easier and more accurate drill operation. Indeed, lower fuel consump-
tion was a key target in drill design for the DPi series. “We set three key environmental targets: one was lower fuel consumption and the other two minimising noise and dust emissions. We developed a new way of measuring fuel consumption which also incorporates the productivity aspect. While the previous measurement unit for fuel consumption was litres per hour, we now count litres per drilled metre,” explains Tapani Sormunen, Sandvik’s engineering manager, New Products, Surface Drills. Indeed Castonguay’s management and operators would fully agree with all the above. The contractor’s Regional Manager for Quebec and the Maritimes, Stephane Lavoie says he, and the company, are particularly pleased with the Sandvik drills at the Marbleton quarry and elsewhere. He comments that the decision to purchase the rigs was based on performance and in particular on fuel consumption “because of the constant and ongoing increase in the fuel price” — a move which has been well justified with the units delivering very precise drilling at 25-30 percent less fuel consumption than equivalent DTH high pressure
Terex Finlay launching new Terex Finlay 684, two deck tracked mobile inclined screen The NEW Terex® Finlay 684 is a highly versatile and adaptable machine engineered and built for working in quarrying, mining, construction and demolition debris, topsoil, recycling, sand, gravel, coal and aggregate applications. The Terex Finlay 684 is a compact easily transportable machine that offers operators rapid set up and tear down times. The new screenbox on the Finlay 684 features two full size 14-foot x 5-foot 7-inch inclined decks providing efficient screening and high capacity. The screenbox features quick wedge tensioning, access holes and bottom deck hydraulic tensioning system to reduce
time required for mesh changes. All three discharge conveyors hydraulically fold for transport providing the operator with rapid set up and tear down times. A high performance 42 inch variable speed belt feeder, with hydraulic gearbox drive, is fitted to the machine as standard and has proven performance and versatility in demanding and varied working environments. The hopper has a 10.50-square-yard capacity as standard and can be fitted with a 14-foot tipping grid or 12-foot vibrating grid. This fully self-contained plant can be hydraulically folded and ready for transport in less than 30 minutes making it the ideal machine for
contract screening. Key features: • NEW double deck 14foot x 5-foot 7-inch screen with full catwalk access; • Maximum utilisation of the two 14-foot x 5-foot 7-inch decks provides ultra-efficient screening capabilities even at small
aggregate sizes; and • A combination of quick wedge tensioning on the top deck, convenient access holes and hydraulic tensioning on the bottom deck ensure mesh set up and change out times are kept to an absolute minimum.
The DPi series of drills comes in three sizes, 900i, 1100i and 1500i, all capable of drilling at least 5-inch holes (the DP1500i up to 6-inch). compressor units in the company’s fleet. He notes that the onboard computer reporting function is very precise and gives the operator, and management very detailed information and that Sandvik service support is also excellent. “I definitely would recommend Sandvik DPi rigs” he says — but perhaps only to non directly competing businesses! Hugo Leblanc, a Castonguay driller at the Marbleton site is equally complimentary about the DP1500i rig he operates. He says that from his experience it performs extremely well in all rock types from hard granites to softer limestones. He has been operating the rig for over a year and says it is very fast, drills good sized holes using Sandvik GT60 rock tools (used on other Castonguay rigs too). “It is much better than other rigs I have used before.” he says. He praises in particular the excellent visibility, the incab quietness of the unit, its accurate drilling — a deviation of only 1 degree in a 26m hole. He also praises the very easy access for refuelling and simple maintenance tasks
Stephane Lavoie and the computer diagnostic system which makes fault correction quick and simple. “I’d recommend this machine to everybody” he says. Leblanc is an experienced driller and the transition to operating a brand new rig was smooth with two weeks training in a simulator to learn the layout and controls, followed by two weeks supervised drilling onsite. He was then “good to go.” He goes on to describe the performance and fuel economy as “amazing” compared with previous rigs he has operated. RACINE, WI — Lubbock, Texas-based Associated Supply Company, Inc. (ASCO) announced today that it has acquired Houston based heavy equipment dealer Hi-Way Equipment Company. The deal solidifies ASCO’s position as one of the largest construction equipment dealers in the United States and immediately expands the company to eight new CASE Construction Equipment locations throughout Texas. New ASCO locations include Dallas/Fort Worth, North Houston, South Houston, Tyler, Bryan, Brenham, Beaumont and Sherman. These new locations complement ASCO’s existing footprint throughout the region, stretching from Amarillo, Texas through the Lubbock headquarters and down to San Antonio. “ASCO has made a name for itself standing by its equipment and providing some of the best support we’ve seen in the industry,” said Jim Hasler, vice president, CASE Construction-North America. “The entire state of Texas represents a major focus for CASE in the oil and gas industry. Having a partner like ASCO expanding
in these markets provides a significant advantage to customers who use CASE equipment, and will also lead to further growth for CASE and ASCO in the region.” ASCO’s product offering includes the full line of CASE Construction Equipment, including loader backhoes, excavators, motor graders, wheel loaders, vibratory compaction rollers, crawler dozers, skid steer loaders, compact track loaders, loader/tool carriers and rough terrain forklifts. The company has also made a name for itself as a premier rental outlet for CASE equipment, and that model will be expanded to the new locations. J.W. (Bill) Wright founded ASCO in 1960 and the company is now guided by a second and third generation of family leadership. Brax Wright, CEO, sees the business model and vision established by his father as guiding principles today. “We’ve always focused on recruiting the best people, selling the best equipment in the industry and, most importantly, providing the best product support avail-
able,” said Wright. “These cornerstones remain a part of who we are and are evident in the acquisition of Hi-Way Equipment. We have a vision of being a premier CASE dealer in North America. This acquisition, along with the extraordinary quality of the people who joined us from Hi-Way Equipment, helps us achieve that.” “My father taught us from an early age that the way to win and retain customers is to always have parts on the shelf and to provide superior product support,” added Wright. “This acquisition gives our customers throughout the entire state confidence that we have support nearby and will be there when they need us.” The acquisition immediately transitions all HiWay Equipment locations to the ASCO name. Three additional Hi-Way Equipment locations (Alvin, Gainesville and Longview) are currently under review by ASCO to determine future plans. Terms of the deal were undisclosed. Keystone Outdoor Expo is for the serious outdoorsman by Jon M. Casey For the outdoorsman who is preparing for their fall and winter sporting activities, the Keystone Outdoor Expo being held at the York Expo Center, York, PA on August 16-18, 2013, is the ideal way to start. Hosted and promoted by Richard Huff, III, avid outdoorsman and coowner of Keystone Valley Ranch, a private deer and elk hunting facility in central Pennsylvania, the three day event begins Friday August 16 at noon and runs through 8 p.m. the first day. Saturday’s activities run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. while Sunday, the Expo is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. “At the Keystone Outdoor Expo, we are looking to provide the outdoorsman with a complete, high quality, experience that will prepare them for their hunting, camping and fishing activities at a time that is best suited for their schedules,” said Huff during a recent interview. “We are creating a show that will appeal to attendees and vendors alike. We want to offer show goers the best of the outfitters when it comes to the products and services that attendees are seeking.” Huff said that with more than 200 exhibitors already signed up for the show, he is looking forward to an event that has something for everyone. “We will have Kate Fiduccia, the co-host of the Woods N’ Water TV Series on hand to share some of her recipes that she features
on the wild game cooking segment of Cooking Wild in Kate’s Kitchen. We are also looking to have her husband Peter Fiduccia, ‘The Deer Doctor,’ on hand as well. Peter is a highly recognized authority on whitetailed deer hunting and is recognized for his ‘Woods N’ Water’ TV Series.” “When we decided to put this show together, we wanted to offer a variety of exhibitors that focus on outfitting the hunters, fishermen and outdoorsmen without bringing in a number of unrelated vendors that distract from the main theme of the show,” said Huff. “If the vendor’s products are items that outdoor people use or need while they are out in the wild, that is the kind of product lines we are looking to offer. We have a number of gun manufacturers represented including Savage. Cabela’s will be there as well. In addition to exhibiting, Cabela’s has donated products to be given away at the show.” Huff said that by hosting the event at the Toyota Arena at the York Expo Center, the show is a destination for Mid-Atlantic outdoorsmen that is a reasonable driving distance. More importantly, there are plenty of accommodations for those who wish to spend the night if they choose. With free parking and a low, $10 general admission (children 11 and under are free), campers, hunters and fishermen are able to spend the day with vendors economically, and come away with the gear and servic-

Doosan DX490LC and DX530 excavators feature more power, performance and comfort WEST FARGO, ND — The Doosan DX490LC3 and DX530LC-3 excavators are equipped with significant upgrades that provide power and performance in road building, site development, oil and gas pipeline development and other construction applications. These machines, which replace the DX480 and DX520 respectively, have been designed with improvements that include increased engine horsepower and lift capacity, improved bucket digging force, enhanced cooling capabilities and better fuel
efficiency. The DX490LC-3 and DX530LC-3 excavators are powered by a six cylinder 389 hp water cooled diesel engine that has been optimized for use with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR) system, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Engines with this configuration are optimized to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOX) and after treatment is needed to reduce particulate matter in compliance with iT4 emission regulations. The turbocharged engine features a high

pressure common-rail design with direct fuel injection, electronic control and four valves per cylinder. Performance Swing torque increased by approximately 21 percent, which allows the excavator to swing uphill more easily, as well as improves the ability to backfill trenches. This leads to decreased time per foot of trench, improving productivity. Bucket digging force has increased approximately three percent, which provides more power in harsh digging conditions, leading to de-

creased cycle times and improved production in trenching applications. Lifting capacity increased by approximately two percent for both the DX490LC-3 and DX530LC-3, providing improved power out of the trench. This improvement also improves the machines’ ability to lift and place more material with each cycle. Total machine front speed has improved, enabling more work to be completed faster, increased cycle times, faster truck loading time and more material moved per hour. A variable geometry

turbocharger (VGT) is utilized to increase boost pressure at lower engine rpm. Controlled by the ECU, the VGT varies the amount of boost supplied to the engine to optimize combustion over the entire rpm range. The VGT also allows the engine to generate a greater amount of torque in a wider band in the rpm range, increasing engine performance at lower engine rpm. This improves machine performance in the Standard and Economy power modes while saving fuel. The Electronic Power Optimizing System
(EPOS) provides optimum power and fuel efficiency via four work modes, auto-idle and machine diagnostics. Operators can work more effectively with multiple operating modes, easy to read display monitors and precise control levers. The new Power+ mode provides improved performance and faster workgroup speeds for heavy duty work. Four work modes — Digging, Breaker, Shear and the new Lifting mode — help operators to get maximum efficiency and fuel economy in

specific applications. Cooling system upgrades include two variable speed hydraulic fans. With this upgrade, operators control the engine coolant and
hydraulic oil cooling systems independently, improving fuel efficiency and providing a quieter operator environment. The new cooling system on average has
a 10 to 15 percent greater cooling capacity. The engine coolant fan can be manually reversed with a switch from inside the cabin to easily and quickly clean out the radiator. Options The DX490LC-3 and DX530LC-3 feature a new Intelligent Floating Boom option that allows the boom of the excavator to “float” up or down, enabling the operator to focus more on the task while decreasing the machine workload and increasing efficiency. Float mode is designed to permit the boom to move freely up and down without hydraulic flow; and in breaker mode the boom is able to move freely down only, without hydraulic flow. A temporary reset button allows the abili-
ty to momentarily disengage the float mode, enabling hydraulic flow to activate the boom. Also offered is an air compressor, which is ideal for operators in remote and dusty locations to clean the cab. Comfort Doosan continues to focus on operator comfort with further enhancements to the cabin. Both a seat height lever and tilting function for the seat cushion were added to the seat to assist the operator in finding an optimum seating position. The cabin mounting mechanism has been improved with a thickened dampening plate, and internal coil spring has been added to reduce cabin vibration 20 percent, allowing operators to work longer days with less fatigue.
The door window position slider now locks in various positions, preventing it from moving from its intended location. The door space of the cab has increased by 1.8-inches, allowing the operator to get in and out more easily. The cabin size has increased 6.1 percent, providing more headroom. The joystick angle has been reduced from 25 degrees to 19 degrees to provide a more ergonomic profile and decrease interference with operators’ legs. The Doosan DX490LC-3 and DX530LC-3 — like every new Doosan machine - are covered by an innovative 48 hour parts guarantee. The program guarantees that if a “machine debilitating” part is need-
ed, Doosan will deliver it directly to the end user within two business days or Doosan will pay for a replacement machine rental. The 48 Hour Parts Guarantee is subject to carrier delivery restrictions and/or governmental agency delays. IROCK expands dealer network with Ace Equipment Sales, Inc. VALLEY VIEW, OHIO — IROCK Crushers continues its commitment and support to customers with the addition of Ace Equipment Sales, Inc. as its New England/New York dealer. Ace specializes in the aggregate industry, selling stationery equipment, tracked units and rolling stock. “We’ve always sought to sell high quality equipment that is designed to last decades, not years,” said John Patton, general manager at Ace. “From what we’ve seen and used, IROCK meets those standards.” Based in Willington, CT, the family owned business was founded in 1973 by Lawrence Becker. As a quarry operator himself, Becker realizes the pain of downtime; hence his 40 year mission to provide excellent service, parts and support. Patton, Becker’s sonin-law, feels IROCK is a good fit for ACE because of IROCK’s mission to manufacture durable equipment, the extensive industry knowledge of the
IROCK team and the company’s dedication to service and support. “IROCK team members have visited our facility several times to help our service and sales departments. They’ve given informative, helpful demonstrations of the equipment we have in stock in order to assist us in selling the product.” Ace Equipment Sales is now carrying IROCK’s mobile horizontal impactor crushers and tracked screeners and scalpers. Patton, who is well versed in the market in the New England/New York area, feels there’s a big market for screening and crushing equipment in his territory — especially in quarry and recycling applications. “IROCK’s screeners and crushers are a good niche for us. We had a gap in our product line and IROCK filled it,” he said. “We’re excited to provide our customers with a broader line of crushing and screening equipment.” Adding Ace Equipment Sales, Inc. to its
dealer network is part of IROCK’s plan to provide exceptional service and support to every IROCK customer. In the development of its dealer network, IROCK strives to assist dealers in expanding as well as provide them with the products and support necessary to meet their needs and boost profits. IROCK is a leading manufacturer of portable crushing plants, screening equipment and other related products. The company, which formed in 1992, is committed to bringing the most productive, quality equipment and solutions to customers through innovation, expertise and outstanding service and support.
