Achieves Tier 4 Interim certification with SCR Emission Control Technology LAS VEGAS — Case Construction Equipment introduced the new 621F wheel loader model at the World of Concrete 2012 show. The new machine provides up to a 10 percent increase in fuel economy over the previous model, while delivering faster acceleration, quicker cycle times and higher travel speeds.
The new Case 621F wheel loader, like other models in the product line, evolved from the company’s E Series machines. To meet Tier 4 Interim emissions standards, the Case F Series wheel loaders use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology, which results in lower temperatures in the exhaust system while optimizing combustion. “Case wheel loaders already led the industry in fuel economy, but the ad-

dition of SCR technology in our Case F Series wheel loaders expands that leadership position,” said Tim O’Brien, brand marketing manager, Case Construction Equipment. “At the same time, we’ve added more power and responsiveness to provide contractors with the combination of performance and economy they need to compete successfully.” The Case 621F wheel loader features a 6.7 liter Tier 4 Interim certified engine that delivers up to 162 hp. Classified as a 2.75-cubic-yard wheel loader,
the Case 621F has an operating weight of 26,641-pounds. “The Case 621F wheel loader delivers the best fuel economy and performance in its class size,” O’Brien said. “Like other F Series models, the 621F offers four programmable power modes to save fuel and increase available power. These easy to program power modes — Economy, Standard, Max and Auto — give operators flexibility in matching engine power to their jobs.”

which include greenhouse gas verification, environmental footprinting and environmental management systems registrations. NSF earned accreditation in 2010 to provide the testing portion of the BPI program. Now as the new administrator, NSF Sustainability will provide all aspects of the certification process from
the initial application, product reviews, testing and verifying compliance to the BPI program requirements. Actual licensing for use of the Compostable Logo will remain BPI’s responsibility. The BPI developed the Certified Compostable program for plastics to apply science based test methods developed by the American Society of
Testing and Materials (ASTM) to verify a material will compost in a municipal or commercial facility, leaving no toxic or lingering plastic. Product testing mimics what takes place in a typical municipal or commercial composting system. To pass these ASTM tests, a product must: • Disintegrate quickly leaving no visible
residue that has to be screened out; • Biodegrade fully or convert rapidly to carbon dioxide, water and biomass; • Result in compost that can support plant growth; and • Not introduce high levels of regulated metals into the soil Certified compostable items range

from compostable bags and foodservice items to packaging materials, widely distributed consumer products and even wax and shellac coatings. The BPI Compostable Logo identifies products that have been independently tested and verified to biodegrade and compost quickly, safely and completely in municipal and commercial composting operations. “The BPI Compostable Logo is widely recognized by consumers, composters and municipal officials throughout North America as the preferred trademark to assure compostability in commercial facilities,” said Steven A. Mojo, BPI executive director. “As more consumer goods companies recognize the importance and value of composting, and the importance of responsible marketing claims about biodegradability and compostability, we anticipate even more growth in the years ahead. This new partnership with NSF will create a strong foundation to support this anticipated growth.” “NSF’s expertise and recognition in both product certification and sustainability will increase the credibility of the BPI’s effort,” said Tom Bruursema, NSF International Sustainability general manager. “NSF Sustainability’s participation will help to expand the Certified Compostable program and provide consumers, institutional, commercial and government purchasers even more access to compostable plastic products.” The BPI awarded the first “Compostable Logo” in 2002 in an effort to distinguish compostable plastic applications from ones made of traditional non-degradable plastics. Since then, more than 230 products made by more than 130 global companies have earned BPI certification. Composting facility does community a “Good T urn!” by Jon M. Casey
With a mountain of bagged leaf waste to deal with, the crew at VPPSA has accepted an interesting challenge in yard waste disposal. Municipal yard waste recycling centers have come a long way in the past twenty years or so. One example of that is the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority (VPPSA) Compost Facility in Yorktown, VA. With more than 20 acres of asphalt paved space available for receiving leaves and yard waste, it is an asset in which the communities of Hampton, Poquoson and York County can take great pride. The facility has successfully developed and grown over the years demonstrating that their composting facility is extraordinary. VPPSA is a ten city and county solid waste authority,” said Donald “Donnie” Bonivich, the Compost Facility supervisor for VPPSA, after he dismounted from the facility’s Komptech Topturn X-60 Compost Turner following the turning of one of the facility’s 12 windrows. Members include the Cities of Hampton,
Poquoson, Williamsburg and the Counties of Essex, James City, King and Queen, King William, Mathews, Middlesex and York. The Towns of Tappahannock, Urbanna and West Point are also included.” The facility receives material from residents, communities and businesses, and includes leaves, grass and brush. Brush can be up to 10-feet in length and up to 24-inches in diameter. This past year, the area experienced considerable storm damage from Hurricane Irene, which prompted VPPSA to keep the facility open for an extended period of time to help make storm clean up go more smoothly. “We were taking in storm debris seven days per week for six weeks,” he said. “There was a lot going on from the first of September until mid-October.” Bagged material Donnie said that he gets exceptional support from
Trucks like this one from the City of Poquoson, VA, pick up leaves and bagged yard waste, curbside, and bring it to the VPPSA Composting Center in Yorktown. Stephen Geissler, executive director of VPPSA, and David Magnant, the director of Operations, when it comes to overseeing changes and improvements at the facility. They are the first to recognize the need for constant improvements and the importance of working together as a team to keep the facility in first class condition. Recently the facility began accepting bagged leaves from several of the communities. Bagged leaves will be accepted from any member community as long as they are in the approved plastic bags. (Clear, no draw strings and are 0.7 millimeters or less in thickness) There has been an excellent response to this new program, and staff has been experimenting with ways to debag the leaves in increasingly successful ways.” Bonivich said that Mid-Atlantic Waste Systems the company from whom VPPSA purchased the Komptech Topturn also assisted them in modifying an existing piece of equipment to debag the leaves. “We are in our second year of doing this,” he said. “Cutting knives were installed in an older Komptech (Mustang) trommel, and it has been working reasonably well. We can process 200 to 300-yards of bagged leaves per hour.” Making Products As we toured the facility, Donnie explained that the

material is initially ground using a tub grinder and then stockpiled so it can cure for a minimum of three months. During the curing process temperatures in the stockpiled mulch can reach 180 degrees. This process kills off any larva and weed seed that may have been in the material when it arrived, also ensures that the material will be safe to place around a customer’s property. The stock piled mulch goes through the tub grinder once more and is then screened into mulch fines and reground mulch products. The compost facility accepts leaves and grass which is used for making compost. The material is ground in the tub grinder and placed into windrows that are several hundred yards long, 20-feet wide and about seven-feet tall. The windrows are monitored over the next six months to ensure consistency. Donnie said that the facility’s Komptech Topturn X60 self-propelled compost turner really comes in handy for keeping the material aerated and processing properly. “With each windrow containing 1500yards of material, there is quite a bit of compost that
needs to be turned on a regular basis,” he said. “Most of the compost that goes out has been processing at least eight months. We measure the internal temperatures of the windrows and turn them regularly.” When the composting process is complete and the material is ready for sale, they process it through a McCloskey 733 trommel before it is sold to customers. The compost facility offers four products for sale: reground mulch, mulch fines, compost and a soil blend. This can be a busy place. The facility hopes to offer colored mulch in the not too distant future. This product was offered several years ago, but with the economy people were leaning toward the lower prices offered on regular mulch. There seems to be the interest now to offer it again. VPPSA is a member of the U.S. Composting and the newly formed Virginia Composting Council. For more information about the VPPSA compost facility contact them at 757-898-5012 or for information about all of the VPPSA programs visit them on line at www.vppsa.org.
A loader operator moves bagged yard waste onto the composting facility's stockpile of material.
Mid Atlantic Waste Systems has been working with VPPSA to develop a trommel application that will shred the plastic bags that are used to haul yard waste to the composting center. A closer look at the interior of the trommel (inset), reveals knives around the drum.
Donnie Bonovich nears the end of this windrow of material in the Komptech Topturn X-60 windrow turner.
X-Series windrow turner’s patented scraper bar prevents odors
The only turners on the market with optional scraper bar mounted behind the drum.
The X-Series windrow turners from Komptech are the only turners on the market with optional scraper bar mounted behind the drum. This patented device allows the turner to pick up all of the windrow, even the very bottom three to four inches which other turners leave behind. It’s in these three to four-inches where huge odor problems start for composters. Because this layer never gets turned, it goes anaerobic and begins to smell. When the windrow is turned the bottom, smelly layer is exposed and odors are allowed to escape. The removable scraper bar rides on the ground surface and picks up this layer preventing any part of the windrow from going anaerobic and thus preventing nasty odors.

Slow Down ... Save fuel and $$$$ by Dave Whitelaw - The Grinder Guy One of the best ways to get rid of sorted wood and general residue from a C&D recycling line is to grind it to fuel size and ship it to some sort of Co-fired Plant or Kiln after removing the unburnables, dirt, brick, block, concrete and steel. Also, it is important to remove the hard PVC plastic and circuit boards. Once that it done, a producer can determine the size of the
fuel he intends to market. That can differ from plant to plant and state to state. Generally, wood fired plants can handle a 6inch minus product. There are some kilns that use a 3-inch conveyable material and many others that use a 1-inch blowable material to mix with their coal.
Typically, BTU values of the C&D residue are often 5,000 to 10,000 BTUs, depending on the materials being recycled in the systems. By comparison coal is 12,500 BTUs or thereabout. In many of these recycling facilities, there is one costly piece of equipment that I find continually, and that is some
sort of high speed grinder at the end of these systems to grind the wood waste into a finished product, usually into a fine, shredded material. More importantly, these grinders are probably the most costly parts of the operations. STOP! Why does the material need to be shredded so finely? The
wasted horsepower. A slow speed shredder with a small screen size cannot only make the product you want, but reduce your costs by using less horsepower and limiting the wear to about one-fourth of what a high speed grinder would offer. The hum of

only time you can make a case for a high speed grinder is if you are shipping a 1-inch product. Even when your finished product material is this size, a grinder of this kind has an infeed rate that is so low, there is no need for a unit of this kind with a big diameter rotor and all its expensive parts and all that

for the biomass fuel you are making. One model of screens to consider is a star screen. Star screens got a tarnished reputation from some of the early years in the industry, but today’s models are nothing like its predecessors. They create less dust than trommels, they don’t plug up like flat decks, you can adjust the sizing in seconds and you can create the multiple products with the same deck. By splitting the deck, you can remove the dirt fines that don’t burn and screen the rest of the product to a specific size for your customer.
We recommend that you review your operations. What if your grinding costs were reduced by over 50 percent and you were paid more for your fuel? Wouldn’t that be an improvement? MPI Magnets, metal detectors handle heavy duty applications Visit MPI booth No. 16201 to see what’s new Highland, MI — Magnetic Products, Inc. (MPI), a worldwide provider of both magnetic and non-magnetic material handling solutions, will display a variety of inventive products at Waste Expo in Las Vegas, from May 1-3, 2012. Products to be featured in booth No. 16201 include: Eddy Current Separators MPI’s proven eddy current technology ensures higher separation rates. State of the art system controls and features combined with technological advances result in improved nonferrous metal removal, particularly when trying to separate smaller particles such as aluminium and brass from non-conductive waste streams. As well as offering free inhouse product testing for eddy current applications, MPI also builds eddy current rotors for customers who seek to upgrade their existing eddy current system performance or OEMs who brand their own material recycling facilities and system equipment. Metal Detectors MPI offers recyclers a complete line of metal detectors, including Cassel next generation metal detectors which feature exclusive “Four Quadrant” technology. Built to withstand the severe application demands of the recycling industry while providing superior performance, MPI metal detectors protect processing equipment from damage and keep unwanted metals from contaminating final product. Cross Belt Separator MPI suspended permanent magnet and electromagnetic cross belt separators allow effective removal of unwanted tramp iron from heavy burden depths of material being conveyed on fast moving conveyor belts. They are ideal for sepa-
rating tramp metal from wet or dry, fine or coarse conveyed materials in large or small volumes. Safe and assured tramp iron extraction from product streams protects processing machinery, prevents fire or explosions caused by sparks, and improves product quality. Magnetic Belt Feeder MPI magnetic belt feeders (MBF) trap ferrous materials that would otherwise contaminate final products. The magnetic belt feeder, engineered to provide maximum elimination of metal contaminants, consists of a belted conveyor with an integrated magnetic head pulley. As product reaches the end of the feeder’s conveyor, it passes through a magnetic field. Ferrous tramp metals adhere to the belt and are carried around the pulley toward the return side of the conveyor. Gravity causes clean, non-ferrous materials to exit and fall away from the MBF system. For further information, contact MPI at 800544-5930 or visit www.mpimagnet.com. Magnetic Products Inc. (MPI), based in southeastern Michigan, is a worldwide provider of both magnetic and nonmagnetic material handling solutions. MPI leads the industry by continuously engineering inventive magnetic equipment and advancing customer education, though significant investments in research and development and proactive product training. For over 30 years, MPI has implemented a business model that combines technologically superior equipment with industry leading customer service. MPI interacts closely with its customers and expands its offerings to meet the changes of a dynamic marketplace. For further information, visit www.mpimagnet.com.
MPI's line of heavy duty magnetic separators and metal detectors are ideally suited for applications that combine high product volume stream flows with the need to protect equipment and keep final product clean. Buckets, cZoupler and SmartFit bucket teeth enhance excavator productivity LAS VEGAS — Case Construction Equipment announced the availability of Case Smart Digging Systems components, including new pin-on buckets, coupler buckets, the Case Multi-Fit Coupler and the SmartFit™ bucket teeth system. The new attachments and components expand the versa-
tility and productivity of Case excavators. Case pin-on buckets are designed for heavy duty, high capacity applications such as digging in dense soil, clay, loose rock and gravel. Available models include: • Heavy duty buckets with a rugged cutting edge and durable horizontal wear strip; • Severe duty buckets featuring rugged T-1 or AR400 steel in all high
wear areas, along with double bottom and horizontal wear strips and thicker edges for improved durability and strength; • Heavy duty, high capacity buckets with 20 percent higher capacity than standard, plus the heavy duty design features of the other buckets; and • Ditching buckets with a for med back wrapper for enhanced loadability and pro-
duction along with tapered sidewalls for easier dumping of sticky material. The Case Multi-Fit Coupler offers complete hydraulic latching, enabling excavator operators to quickly attach and detach buckets and other components without leaving the cab. A patented mechanical blocking system eliminates manual safety pin insertion.
The universal design of the coupler enables Case excavators to connect a wide range of Case and other OEM buckets and attachments within the same size class. A hydraulic check valve and mechanical blocking bar help prevent the accidental release of an attachment. Designed for the MultiFit Coupler, Case coupler buckets feature integrated bucket pins to prevent any loss of breakout force that might otherwise occur when using a coupler device. Available in a wide range of sizes, the coupler buckets work in either the backhoe or face positions for optimum versatility. Their design results in quicker, more complete fills. Case SmartFit bucket teeth are now factory installed, standard equipment on Case buckets purchased with all full sized and mid range excavators. Customers also may purchase additional SmartFit equipped Case buckets, or upgrade older model buckets, at Case Construction Equipment dealerships. The SmartFit system provides stronger, more durable teeth and adapters, and hammerless, reusable locking pins. SmartFit bucket
teeth are available in a variety of configurations to fit a full range of buckets. The SmartFit lineup includes general purpose, rock chisel, heavy penetrator, tiger, twin tiger and flare teeth. S .B. Cox, Inc. committed to keeping recyclables out of landfills by Jon M. Casey
S.B. Cox's Yorktown Recycling Center is an efficient, compact facility. From the time that Richmond Virginia’s S.B. More importantly, with the addition contractor and construction service provider, the of this new recycling center, S.B. The Recycling Center Division consists of a facility la,” said Wayne Roskop, Recycling Manager for the in Richmond that opened in 2008, and a new opera- new Yorktown facility. During our tour of the center, tion in Yorktown, VA. With this kind of enterprising Roskop explained that the building of the complex growth, it comes as no surprise that S.B. Cox crews also did the concrete work on the ramps for the truck scale that monitors incoming and outgoing loads. He likened the teamwork to that of a family getting together to build a new house for one of the family members. Roskop noted that Continental Biomass Industries (CBI) was called in to design and build the materials processing system. They chose CBI because of the success that they had experienced at the Richmond Recycling Center. There, a CBI system has been operating reliably for the past several years. When it was time to build the new recycling center, As material comes off the incoming conveyor, a worker looks for cardboard to pull from the mix.

CBI was a natural. He recalled that the new facility has been steadily increasing in volume since it opened on Sept. 7, 2011. The increased material flow means that they are accomplishing what we set out to do when the commitment was made to build this facility. Eight products diverted from the landfill The Yorktown plant is currently sorting out eight different recyclable materials that now bypass the landfill. For example, the cardboard, metal, plastic, copper and brass, are sold on the open market. The concrete is retained and crushed on site for sale to contractors as a sub base material with the fine (15/8-inch minus) being used at S.B. Cox’s Taylor Road Landfill as ADC. Asphalt shingles sorted from the material stream are taken to a custom grinder who returns them to be used Asphalt mixes of other companies. The wood waste is ground to create mulch products, boiler fuel, with a portion of the material going to a paper mill as biofuel. “We are constantly looking at waste materials that are brought into our facilities, to see what else we can recycle,” he said. “From the time our excavator operator places a grapple load of material into the input hopper until the remaining waste material goes off the far end of the conveyor, takes only three minutes,” he said. “That gives you an idea of how this equipment and our workers can sort out the incoming material.” As material leaves the input hopper, it initially crosses a Taper Slot Screen where smaller material 15/8-inch or minus are removed and sent to a large storage pit with an auger to keep material moving to the front of the bunker. Larger wood waste is removed during the picking process where it is dropped onto a belt beneath the work area. This takes the larger wood pieces back to the Grizzly where it is ground with the other wood waste. During that process, wood waste passes beneath one of two magnets where nails and other metal debris is removed before going through the grinder. The facility is open for inbound material from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays from 6:30 to noon. At the time of this writing, the system was in operation eight hours per day, Monday through Friday. Cardboard, plastics and vinyl siding is baled individually, with an American Baler with the bundles heading to market when a truckload has accumulated. The baling takes place when a sufficient supply of either material has filled their respective stockpiles in one of the storage bins beneath the conveyors. Cardboard bales routinely run about 1650pounds while the plastic bales run approximately

Cox is a wonderful place to work,” Roskop said, reflecting on how long a number of the employees had been working for the company. “I believe the average longevity of our workers is over 10 years. We all work together to help get things done. We even have people working for the company for more than 40 years.” Roskop said that the current plant configuration allows for future growth with the potential for a second production line sometime in the future. He said that it might possibly include a trommel for sizing wood material as the markets for those products continues to grow. With the dedication that S.B. Cox has to make certain that material does not end up in a landfill, the addition might come sooner rather than Nails and other metal objects are pulled from the matelater! Doosan provides additional enhancements to DX350LC with interim Tier 4 updates WEST FARGO, ND — The Doosan DX350LC excavator is more than just interim Tier 4 (iT4) compliant. Improvements span from more engine horsepower and torque to a turbocharger, upgraded cooling system and new hydraulic system. The DX350LC is powered by a 281 hp, six cylinder DL08K water cooled diesel engine that has been optimized for use with cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR) system, diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF). The engines in this configuration are optimized to reduce nitrogen oxides and after treatment is needed to reduce particulate matter, to comply with iT4 emission regulations. The turbocharged 466-cubicinch engine features a common rail design with direct fuel injection, electronic control and four valves per cylinder. The high pressure common rail (HPCR) system increases the efficiency of fuel delivery by increasing the pressure to 26,100 psi. The increased pressure allows the injector to inject a finer mist into the engine, which results in a more efficient combustion as required by the lower combustion chamber temperature due to the CEGR system. Cooling system upgrades include two variable speed hydraulic fans. This allows the engine and oil cooling systems to be controlled independently, improving fuel efficiency and provides a quieter operator environment. The new cooling system on average has a 10 -15 percent greater cooling capacity. Performance The improvements in engine horsepower and torque, coupled with the six percent increased maximum pressure from the main control valve, mean increases in various workgroup functions. Swing torque increased by approximately 8 to 11 percent, which allows the excavator to swing uphill more easily,
as well as improve backfilling trenches. This leads to decreased time per foot of trench, improving productivity. Digging force has increased approximately five percent, which allows for more power in harsh digging conditions, leading to decreased cycle times and improved production in trenching applications. Lifting capacity increased by approximately two percent, providing
improved power out of the trench, allowing the machine to lift and place more material with each cycle. The boom-up speed improved by approximately six percent, which allows for more work to be completed faster, increased cycle times, improved truck loading time and more material moved per hour. A variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) is utilized to increase boost pressure at lower engine
rpm. Controlled by the ECU, the VGT varies the amount of boost supplied to the engine to optimize combustion over the entire rpm range. The VGT also allows the engine to generate a greater amount of torque in a wider band in the rpm range, increasing engine performance at lower engine rpm. This improves machine performance in the standard and economy power modes while saving fuel.

The new closed center main control valve with electro hydraulic pump control, exclusive to the DX350LC, allows the ECU to maximize engine power. This leads to an approximately 20 percent increase in efficiency of the main control valve, which leads to improved fuel economy. Workgroup performance increased approximately 10 percent compared to the Tier 3 DX350LC model. Smoother control and
more accurate placement of materials is a result of the operator’s ability to control the machine with more precise movement. Additionally, the new boom float option allows the boom of the excavator to “float” up or down, allowing the operator to focus more on the task while decreasing the machine workload and increasing efficiency. The float mode allows

the boom to move freely up and down without hydraulic flow. The breaker mode allows the boom to freely move down, only without hydraulic flow. A temporary reset button allows the ability to momentarily disengage the float, allowing hydraulic flow to activate the boom. Comfort Doosan continues to focus on operator comfort with further enhancements to the roll-over protective structure (ROPS) cabin. Both a seat height lever and tilting function for the seat cushion were added to the seat to allow the operator to find an optimum seating position. The cabin mounting mechanism has been improved with a thickened dampening plate and a coil spring has been added to reduce cabin vibration 20 percent, allowing operators to work longer days with less fatigue. The door window position slider now locks in various positions, preventing it from moving from its intended location. Both front and rear glass windows are also adjustable. The door space of the cab has increased by 1.8inches, allowing the operator to get in and out more easily. The cabin size has increased 6.1 percent, providing more headroom. The joystick angle has been reduced from 25 degrees to 19 degrees to provide a more ergonomic profile and decrease interference with

The five Cat® K Series medium wheel loaders — 950K, 962K, 966K, 972K, 980K — offer complete machine guarding packages to help ensure reliable and durable operation in harsh industrial applications. To attain even greater reliability, Cat Flexport™ Tires are available on four of the loader models. Of course the loaders retain all of the productivity, comfort and safety enhancing attributes of the standard K Series loaders introduced in 2011. The K Series medium wheel loaders offer excellent fuel efficiency and engines certified to meet Tier 4 Interim and Stage IIIB emissions standards in North America and Europe. Other enhancements include a new cab and operator station, which feature a panoramic view, automatic climate control and viscous mounts to reduce vibration. The highly productive K Series medium wheel loaders now offer options specifically designed to enhance operation in waste handling, recycling, scrap handling, demolition and other demanding industrial applications. Purpose built guarding and components Cat machine guarding
is purpose built to protect major components and systems, and specially engineered components are designed to resist damage in industrial applications. For example, narrow, steel front fenders fit close to the frame to help avoid damage, and the bottom and rear access steps in the industrial loader package are suspended by heavy duty steel cable. Front frame guards protect the underside of the front half of the machine. These guards prevent debris accumulation and damage to major components such as the drive shaft and lift cylinders. Protecting the underside of the rear half of the machine, belly guards prevent debris buildup and damage to major components such as the engine and transmission. The industrial package includes a hinged power train guard and an optional, powered guard for allowing easy access to remove debris. Axle seal guards provide protection from wire or other debris that could wrap around the axle and damage axle seals. The optional heavy duty radiator guard provides additional rear machine protection. The guard is hinged for easy
