Hey Grinder Guy My Landfill Costs are killing my C&D Operation! What can I do? The answer: STOP GO-
ING THERE! Obviously if you could avoid it, you certainly would be. But since you
are not, let’s take a look at what you are sending. First of all most of the C&D systems being sold today are of the same de-
sign, whether small, medium or large. Not always, but most of the time they are. So, if you plan to recycle rather than take material to the landfill, there are things you can do to prepare. For example, FIGURE OUT YOUR MARKETS… before you design your systems. • If you are using a float tank to remove the heavies and you are sending your wood and plastic for fuel and the material cannot be above 15 percent moisture... Why do you have a float tank? • If you are pulling the small lightweight product off of your sort line with air and putting back into you stream later, why are you pulling them in the first place? • If your high speed grinder at the end of your system is costing you too much maintenance time and money, why do you have it? To start with: • The number one rule is to keep your materials dry. Rain on your material will cost you thousands at the landfill. They have cheap fabric buildings these days, that will pay for themselves with the greater production and reduced maintenance time in addition to reducing land-
turn a profit. Zero is good here. • Carpeting often is difficult to recycle, but in some parts of the country, it is easier than in others. Get together with other C&D operators around the country and find out what they are doing with carpet and other materials. Get their contacts and share ideas. Adding more equipment like a shredder and screener does not come cheap. But the multiple operations they become involved with turn you from a mediocre recycling operation into a productive, producer of recycled materials. From the front end reducing mattresses and bulky waste and recovering the steel, to the back end shredding shingles, wood and residue, a shredder pays for itself multiple times over. A screen will assist you in more applications. Whether it’s screening ground shingles or drywall at 3/8-inches, dirt at - inch or concrete at 2inches, you will be able to market several materials that you aren’t currently, with the small investment in a versatile addition. fill fees for the extra weight that water adds. • You need to be pulling every single piece of metal, hard plastic, rock and dirt, shingle, cardboard, drywall. Every piece. • If you are able to pile your residue, then operate a second shift to rerun your residue from the first shift and see what you are missing. Dirt stuck to plastic falls off, steel that was buried now gets pulled, all kinds of things happen and rerunning may save you big dollars later. • Shredding the residue to reduce the volume of outbound loads will help too. • Determine where most of your residue is coming from. Is it one type? One customer? Adjust you price structure accordingly. • If you purchase a shredder and screener, that will help. If you have nowhere to go but the landfill, you must figure out additional markets for the residue. Most of the residues include mattresses, carpet, light plastics and miscellaneous junk. Find the market for all this material and you will reduce your costs. • Mattresses are easily shredded with a low speed shredder and you can recover a substantial amount of steel. The fluff can be sent for fuel. • Shingles make up a lot of landfill weight and have become a problem with disposal lately because of less paving going on. If you can pile them for a while, you can shred and screen them and use those internally making roads and parking lots on your own properties. • Drywall shredded and screened is easy to get rid of to a whole lot of farmers. • One of the best ways to dispose of residue is to shred it for fuel to ship it to some sort of Cofired Plant. Even if the plant is not logistically worth the amount saved, use a web service for transportation options. Many operations use a backhaul from another Carrier to transport their product. The key is to reduce your cost, not necessarily

KEWANEE, IL — The new BC472RB refuse compactor from BOMAG offers the performance and durability of the company’s larger machines, but in a more compact package. Ideal for smaller landfills, the 52,900-pound compactor offers a sealed frame design, outstanding operator comfort, easy maintenance access and superior compaction capabilities. Featuring BOMAG’s exclusive PAKALL wheel design, the BC472RB utilizes polygonal compaction rings. The front wheel contains 50 teeth, and the rear wheel has 40. The machine eliminates air voids by shredding and crushing waste, allowing landfill operators to achieve greater density, preserve valuable airspace and extend the lifespan of their landfills. The BC472RB comes with a hydrostatic drive system for superior control and traction. Powered by a 255 hp Deutz water cooled diesel engine, the hydrostatic drive efficiently transfers power and torque to the wheels, providing high pushing power while consuming low amounts of fuel. Like the larger compactors in the BOMAG line, the BC472RB features a sealed frame and hubs, which protect major drive components and prevent debris from entering the engine compartment. The compactor has 23.6-inches of ground clearance and an articulating/oscillating center joint, helping to maintain greater wheel contact, control and maneuverability. Adjustable scraper bars and wire cutters keep the wheels free of debris to maintain traction and allow maximum tooth penetration. In addition to offering superior compaction to extend landfill lifespan, the BC472RB also reduces maintenance
Waste not want not: F rom sewage to sustainable compost Texas water treatment district takes holistic approach to biosolids composting

by Dawn Buzynski, Two Rivers Marketing Over the last decade, Jerry Atkinson, general manager for Bell County Water Control and Improvement District No. 1 (WCID No. 1) in Killeen, Texas, would watch biosolids from the District’s three wastewater plants being hauled away for disposal at various land sites thinking, “There must be a better way.” Atkinson said they were spending close to $75,000 each year to dispose of biosolids, residual byproducts of wastewater treatment. At the same time, the city of Killeen was having a problem with disposal of brush and green waste as well. It seems that both these entities were destined to collaborate to provide a solution for both issues and at the same time, offer a
valuable service to its residents and customers. As a result, in August 2011, the Bell County WCID No. 1 Regional Composting Facility opened. “That was the first day we began bringing biosolids from our wastewater treatment plants to the composting facility to begin the process of making a beneficial end product, which is compost,” says Atkinson. 250 tons of sludge The Texas Legislature established Bell County WCID No. 1 in 1952. The District serves more than 275,000 people in the region including municipalities of Killeen, Copperas Cove, Harker Heights, Nolanville, Belton and the largest U.S. Army base in the world — Fort Hood. Each day, more than 90 million gallons of

material flows in and out of the water treatment plant. Before composting, on any given week, approximately 250 tons of Class B biosolids, commonly known as sludge, would be loaded onto trucks and transported from the wastewater plants to permitted land specified for biosolids disposal. In 2005, Atkinson says they seriously began to look at alternatives to this dumping process. “At that particular time, the district was disposing its biosolids on beneficial land use sites. In other words, we were applying the biosolids to the land,” says Atkinson. The process was quite burdensome, he explains. And, it was costly. Just to apply for a permit for a beneficial land use site cost the district $35,000. They even tried working with private landowners to avoid the permitting process. Still, costs to dispose solids ran up to $75,000 per year. It was during this time that an article in the Killeen Daily Herald reported that the city was having a problem with determining what to do with its brush collection. The city hauled brush and green waste to a landfill near a transfer station. The district’s board of directors began discussions about a regional compost facility that would take these two waste products and create a beneficial product. Feasibility study Once the decision was made to pursue the prospect of a compost facility, the District went to Lockwood Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) an environmental engineering firm in Houston. They are known for their experience in the design and build of public works and energy facilities. In the past, the district had worked with LAN when it built its newest wastewater treatment plant. “LAN has environmental and wastewater divisions, so they are not rookies with a project like this,” Atkinson says. “They have the experience with biosolids management, the permitting of these types of facilities and the understanding of what was needed for a viable, solid state of the art facility.” The first order of business was to conduct a feasi-

bility study. Many issues had to be considered and resolved before a shovel could break ground. Environmental work and finding a location for the facility, needed to take place. Talks began with the City of Killeen to lease the property where the city was currently disposing of its brush. It was quickly determined that this site was the most conducive to a compost facility, and the city agreed to a long term lease for 20 acres of land for the facility. From that point, the district and LAN started visiting other compost facilities where they observed the site layout and how others approached the composting process. Based on these observations, Atkinson quickly determined what would and would not work in his district. “We spent a year or so doing our homework,” he says. “As we went around the state observing what other sites were doing, the staff and I began to gather data on what we liked about other facilities and things we did not like about them. We discussed the convenience for the citizens and what our citizens may like and not like in a facility.” He determined that site layout was an important factor. The district wanted the most environmentally friendly layout with the least amount of intrusion and impact on nearby residents. Much thought went into how the facility would be designed. Safety was the primary consideration. It was decided that the brush grinding area would be located in the back corner of the facility, far from where employees work and traffic flows in and out of the facility. The newer windrows would be located in the lower area of the site to stay out of the wind and minimize odors for area residents. “Finishing windrows” would be located closer to the front for final screening and easy pickup. Right on the money After the feasibility study, a scope of work was developed and the arduous process to fund the project began. The district and LAN set the budget at $4.5 million — $3 million for construction and $1.5 million for equipment. One thing they wouldn’t do, Atkinson says, is have the resident customers foot the bill. The district did not want to skimp on what they had planned for the facility, so they decided to wait on construction until the economic climate was more favorable. “We did not want to burden the residents of this area with additional tax dollars or with an increase in their water and waste rates,” he says. “So we determined that we would build the facility with the money that we had. In 2008, the price of fuel had jumped and construction costs were very high. It wasn’t until 2009 when we began the bid process for construction.” The construction contract was awarded to F.T. Woods Construction Company of Georgetown, Texas. As construction moved forward, the next task was to

The series of lectures include: bridge, airport, highway and slope paving techniques; machine setup; texture and curing; controller adjustment and troubleshooting; skewed deck paving; screed rail and chair setup and thin bonded overlays. “We have designed the classes for contractor interaction with instructors and each other,” says Aron Sweeney, service school coordinator. Day two includes a shuttle to Canton for hands-on paving demonstrations with Terex BidWell pavers, where students put their classroom training into practice. Instructors show the students proper paver setup and operation for standard as well as skewed pours. The final highlight of the day is a guided tour of the new 80,000-square-foot Terex Bid-Well office and manufacturing facility. For class registration or for more details, visit www.bid-well.com. Registration deadline is one week prior to the session date. There is no limit to the number of attendees a company can send, but classroom size is capped at 50. Tuition for the two day class is $200 and includes meals and trans-
Legacy the first to offer tension fabric buildings with rigid frame, structural steel SOUTH HAVEN, MN — Combining superior quality rigid frame engineering with the proven benefits of tension fabric, Legacy Building Solutions introduces its Legendary Building Series, the industry’s first line of fabric buildings to incorporate structural steel beams instead of open web trusses. This new engineering concept provides a high level of flexibility for a wide range of applications, including transfer stations, recycling facilities and storage buildings. Legacy buildings uti-
ble with web truss, and adding side doors is simple as well. Structures can be modified to provide desired eave extensions and interior columns. They can also be engineered to handle additional loads for conveyors, sprinklers and even commodity loads on the sidewalls. Legacy buildings feature high quality polyethylene fabric roofs that eliminate the corrosion concerns associated with metal constructed facilities. A wide variety of PVC fabrics are also available. lize a durable rigid frame in place of the hollow tube, open web truss framing traditionally used for fabric buildings. Unlike hollow tube steel, Legacy’s solid structural steel beams are not vulnerable to unseen corrosion originating inside a tube. Additionally, the structural steel has multiple coating options, including hot dip galvanizing, red oxide primer and powder coat paint. The strength of the structural steel frame provides several engineering advantages, most notably the flexibility to customize buildings beyond the confines of standard sizes to the exact width, length and height required. The design allows for much wider doors than possi-
durable fabric allows natural light to permeate the structure, while insulation can be added to meet energy codes when required. Installation is faster than with conventional buildings, and the design can be adjusted for stationary or portable applications. Sidewalls can be customized and built with any desired material — including steel, paneling or siding — and then easily lined with fabric to prevent corrosion to the interior. Legacy steel components and fabric covers are backed by a 15 year warranty. Legacy offers assistance from concept to completion, including renderings, foundation design, installation and project management. To
date, Legacy’s in-house, professional installation crews have constructed over 25-million-squarefeet of fabric buildings. Legacy Building Solutions specializes in the innovative design, engineering and construction of fabric-covered buildings for several different industries and applications. RALEIGH, NC — McGill Environmental Systems, a North Carolina based organics recycling company, has been named the 2011 Composter of the Year by the U.S. Composting Council, the national trade association for compost manufacturers. The award was presented at a luncheon during the USCC’s annual conference in Austin, Texas on Jan. 19. The Composter of the Year award honors the best U.S. commercial scale composting company. McGill is the first Carolinas company to receive the award and was selected for its 20 years of achievements in compost production, marketing and education. “Being named composter of the year is a tremendous honor,” says Noel Lyons, McGill president. “It serves as acknowledgement by
our peers that McGill has made a real and lasting contribution to the promotion of composting as an industry across the U.S.” McGill has regional operations centers near Raleigh, NC, Wilmington,
NC.and Waverly, VA, as well as three facilities in Ireland, and employs nearly 100 people. Founded in eastern North Carolina in 1991 by Jim McGill and Noel L yons, McGill specializes in composting
biodegradable materials from industrial, municipal and agribusiness sources. The company recycles about 400,000 tons of waste materials annually to manufacture 370,000 cubic yards of
compost products for professional landscaping, sports turf, erosion control and agricultural markets. In addition to compost manufacturing and compost sales, McGill also offers mobile de-
watering and transportation, as well as design build operate services and technology licensing for customer owned facilities. Visit www.mcgillcompost.com for additional information.
“Maximum” safety and comfort with SENNEBOGEN Maxcab STANLEY, NC — The hallmark of D Series material handlers from SENNEBOGEN is the engineering focus on operator safety and comfort that led to the distinctive maXCab operator station. The maXCab’s most visible difference from conventional operator stations is its unique sliding door design, coupled with a permanent catwalk and guard railing to surround the cab entry. The overall result is an entry and exit
path that is more open than swinging doors can allow, with enough security that operators can safely leave their cab without first lowering it to deck level. Another handrail protects the stairway that leads up to the cab, so operators take a continuously secure, guarded route from the ground to their work station. Inside, the ergonomic layout of operator controls affords a roomy feel that’s enhanced by a 360
degree view through tinted panoramic windows. While clear visibility from the cab helps to improve productivity, it also contributes to safety by reducing operator fatigue through long working shifts. The maXCab’s heated air suspension seat adjusts to the individual preferences for reaching the control levers and foot pedals. Automatic heating and air conditioning continuously self-adjusts the in-
side air temperature through eight separate air vents for an even, comfortable cab climate. The maXCab is offered with a choice of SENNEBOGEN’s high rise systems which elevate the cab to heights up to 19.4-feet. As well as standard vertical elevation, option configurations include an articulating boom that allows operators to move the cab “up and out” over the undercarriage, or to

As the nation’s infrastructure becomes increasingly in need of repair or total replacement in many places, a sustainable supply of quality aggregates for highway construction becomes more important. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the demand for all types of aggregates in 2007 and 2008 was approximately 2.5 to 3 billion tons per year. More importantly, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) estimates the annual need for pavement aggregates at approximately 700 million tons. Bill Langer, a USGS aggregates research geologist, notes that in order to meet the current and
future infrastructure needs over the next five years, a 70 percent increase in annual aggregate production may be required. Therefore, it is with this increasing need that recycled concrete becomes an important resource. Recycled products can replace virgin material. CalCrush of Ripon, CA recognized this need more than a decade ago. It was April 12, 2000 when they first began recycling concrete paving materials. According to Charlie Evans, primary owner of CalCrush, the company recycles an array of raw products ranging from concrete, asphalt and brick, to
CalCrush owners Charlie and Cheryl Evans stand outside of their Ripon, CA headquarters. block and tile, all originating from sources throughout California and northern Nevada. He said that these recycled materials ultimately become road base, rip rap, manufactured sand and other aggregates designed for asphalt and concrete. Evans said that CalCrush chose the IROCK TS-512 screen plant because it fits well with many different types of rock crushers. When outfitted with the track propulsion system, the TS-512 is able to get into small and tight jobsites. With this kind of flexibility and portability, the crews can process material where it is stockpiled. This saves customers the cost of hauling raw materials from the stockpile to the crusher. Anthony Beato serves as the general manager of CalCrush, Ripon, CA.

Since buying the first one from Maxim Equipment of Stockton, CA, CalCrush purchased a second TS512. “We acquired one in 2010 and the second in 2011,” he said. “One of our TS-512 is currently working on-site at the Edwards Air Force Base,” Evans said. “It’s screening behind a tracked 3055 jaw crusher. We are making three different concrete products with it, a 4x2inch, a 2x1-inch and a 1-inch minus. Our other TS512 is on location screening material behind a tracked 4250 horizontal shaft impactor. That one is making 3/4-inch minus aggregate base.” Evans added that they have also been impressed with the TS-512’s production rate. “We can get 300 plus tons per hour past the 5x12-foot screen box,” he said. “That is a tall order for a 5x12-foot box to handle, but the IROCK is up to the challenge.” “One of the unit’s greatest assets is its simplicity. It is not overly automated, so you don’t have to be a

by Gwen Pernie According to Sean Donaghy, national sales manager for IROCK Crushers LLC of Oakwood Village, Ohio, the IROCK TS-512 tracked portable screening unit, is a relatively new product to the IROCK Crusher line. It has been manufactured since 2010. The tracked screener offers a wide range of applications such as sand, gravel, topsoil and aggregates. “Several big advantages of the screening plant is that they reduce energy costs because of their technologically advanced engine systems,” he said. IROCK Crushers LLC is located in Oakwood Village, Ohio. It started doing business in 1991 under the ownership of Ken Taylor. IROCK supplies products to the United States and Canada providing a full line of portable crushing and screening plants. The IROCK line is designed for use in processing quarry rock, sand and gravel, recycled asphalt, concrete and demolition debris with typical production rates of 50-650. New Stone Slinger keeps operators out of the truck and on the job! New remote operated Creep Drive allows operators to control the Stone Slinger and maneuver the truck from outside the cab. MISSISSAUGA, ON — W.K. Dahms Mfg. Ltd. has successfully launched a new generation of remote controls for Stone Slinger truck conveyors that can dramatically reduce the time to unload and place aggregate loads with precision. The new Stone Slinger™ Creep Drive system provides operators with a remote control feature that not only controls the speed and direction of the conveyor, but allows the operator to remotely maneuver the truck itself around the jobsite. The operator now has a single set of controls to run the conveyor and reposition the truck for ideal placement of the material, without returning to the truck. The truck and the Stone Slinger become a fully integrated material delivery system. Scott Nelson, manager of W.K. Dahms, reports that the first of the new Stone Slingers equipped with Creep Drive was delivered at the end of August to John Da Silva of Rock Concrete Forming Ltd. in Mississauga, Ontario. After putting the Stone Slinger through its paces for a full season, Da Silva says, “If I was buying another truck, I wouldn’t get anything else — no question!” According to Da Silva, his investment in the Creep Drive feature has paid off well. “On a typical weeping tile job, the driver has to go back and forth to move the truck four or five times. And, each time, when you get into the truck, you have to turn the PTO off, drive the truck, put the air brakes on again and restart the PTO. It’s the time saving that pays you back.” The right place to be By using the remote control to move the truck, the operator remains outside the cab to
keep the material flowing until the load is completely delivered. Da Silva says that getting out of the truck is the right place for operators to be. “You get out here and you can see everything. We are always working in very tight spaces. You can watch the wheels and the ground more closely
than if you’re steering from the cab. You won’t ever put the truck into a pothole or a ditch, so you never have to wait for another truck to come and pull you out!” The Stone Slinger Creep Drive adds a complete hydrostatic drive system to the standard powertrain of the truck. A hydraulic driven gear-
box is inserted into the driveline. A CAN Bus panel controls all hydraulic and operating functions and communicates with the remote, which the operator carries in a sling. Jobsite safety designed in Nelson explains that safety was a key factor in Dahms’ design of the
system. “The maximum speed the truck can achieve under hydraulic power is 2.5 km/h — a comfortable walking speed. The control circuitry receives constant feedback on the actual wheel speed from the truck. If the truck’s on an incline, the hydraulics will brake its speed automatically.
Several fail safes are built in as well. If the wheel speed exceeds 4 km/h, the CAN Bus will shut down and stop the truck completely.” Lower costs, better results Da Silva finds that the Creep Drive leads to better job quality, too, with

Texas Hydraulics to feature Refuse Design Cylinders and Integrated Hydraulic Cylinders at WasteExpo 2012 TEMPLE, TX — Texas Hydraulics, Inc., the premier solution provider in hydraulic cylinder technology, announces that it will showcase its Integrated Hydraulic Cylinders and Refuse Design Cylinders in Booth No. 6014 at WasteExpo 2012. The show, which brings together a wide variety of leaders from both the private and public sectors of the waste management industry, will be held from April 30 to May 2, 2012, in Las Vegas, NV. The typical hydraulic system utilizes a separate pump, motor, line mounted valves or manifold, hoses, fittings and reservoir, while Texas Hydraulics’ Fully Integrated Hydraulic Cylinders combine all of these components into one compact assembly. Fully Integrated Cylinders are ideal for any application where performance, energy efficiency and environmental concerns are at a premium. These self-contained, “plug & play” custom cylinders can eliminate the need for hoses, fittings and most of all, costly installation time, all while reducing the number of potential leak points significantly. Thanks to their self-contained design, the potential for contaminant ingress into the hydraulic system is greatly reduced. Texas Hydraulics’ Fully Integrated Hydraulic Cylinders can also operate solely on
battery power, making them ideal for solar applications or on sites where no outside electricity is available. These durable, welded cylinders can also feature position sensing, overload protection, regenerative circuits, load locking, thermal protection, proportional flow control and many other features. Texas Hydraulics will also be showcasing its Refuse Design Cylinders, which are specifically designed as custom solutions within the waste management industry. Based on extensive cycle and fatigue testing, these rugged “Texas Tough” cylinders can perform up to 10 times better than competitive designs. Recognizing the stresses on cylinders in challenging refuse applications, these cylinders also feature optimized welds that reduce stress concentrations, thereby increasing durability and reliability. Based on the application, many utilize Texas Hydraulics’ state of the art friction welder, thereby creating a stronger joint that increases acceptable cylinder tensile load and cylinder fatigue life. When you have a difficult waste management cylinder application there’s only one team to call… Texas Hydraulics. Problem Solved. Slinger from 20 less wasted material. Operators naturally tend to avoid extra walks back to the truck if they possibly can. By making it easy to move the truck into the best location, Creep Drive helps operators to distribute the material more precisely and consistently with no extra time or inconvenience. For a contractor like Da Silva, that translates into
lower costs for cleanup and for material. W.K. Dahms Mfg. Ltd. has been manufacturing the Stone Slinger truck conveyor system for more than 30 years and continues to set the standard for efficient delivery and placement of aggregate materials. The original Stone Slinger concept was an innovation of W. Keith Dahms, who first fitted a truck
body with an outboard rear conveyor to replace the traditional labourious and costly wheel barrow method of distributing material on construction sites. Stone Slinger today represents a diverse family of systems for precise, labour free placement of gravel and stone, sand, soil and mulch materials. For further information on Stone Slinger John Da Silva of Rock Concrete Forming has been running the first new Stone Slinger with remote-operated Creep Drive since the Spring of 2011.
