steel. Also, it is important to remove the hard PVC plastic and circuit boards. Once that it done, a producer can determine the size of the fuel he intends to market. That can differ from plant to plant and State to State. Generally, wood fired plants can handle a 6” minus product. There are some kilns that use a 3-inch conveyable material and many others that use a 1-inch blowable material to mix with their coal. Typically, BTU values of the C&D residue are often 5,000
bly everything else too. Another area of savings is to screen your material before grinding. Screens are cheap in comparison to grinders. You really need them to remove the dirt fines from your product to reduce your ash content anyway. So if you have some oversized material that needs to be removed, scalp it off too and drop out those fines while you are at it. You’ll get more money for the biomass fuel you are making. One model of screens to consider is a star screen. Star screens got a tarnished reputation from some of the early years in the industry, but today’s models are nothing like its predecessors. They create less dust than trommels, they don’t plug up like flat decks, you can adjust the sizing in seconds and you can create the multiple products with the same deck. By splitting the deck, you can remove the dirt fines that don’t burn and screen the rest of the product to a specific size for your customer. We recommend that you review your operations. to 10,000 BTUs, depending on the materials being recycled in the systems. By comparison coal is 12,500 BTUs or thereabout. In many of these recycling facilities, there is one costly piece of equipment that I find continually, and that is some sort of high speed grinder at the end of these systems to grind the wood waste into a finished product, usually into a fine, shredded material. More importantly, these grinders are probably the most costly parts of the operations. STOP! Why does the material need to be shredded so finely? The only time you can make a case for a high speed grinder is if you are shipping a 1-inch product. Even when your finished product material is this size, a grinder of this kind has an infeed rate that is so low, there is no need for a unit of this kind with a big diameter rotor and all its expensive parts and all that wasted horsepower. A slow speed shredder with a small screen size cannot only make the product you want, but reduce your costs by using less horsepower and limiting the wear to about one-fourth of what a high speed grinder would offer. The hum of that high speed rotor spinning, whether electric or a diesel driven, is costing you all your profit on the fuel product you are creating and proba-

New Case CX470C excavator sets new standards in fuel economy, productivity and operator environment consumption and improves performance. Boom Economy Control (BEC) automatically reduces engine RPMs and hydraulic power to the boom when speed and power is not a priority, such as when swinging back to the hole. Swing Relief Control
(SWC) technology manages the hydraulic power allotted at the start of the swing operation and Spool Stroke Control (SSC) creates an automatic pressure adjustment to meet demand during digging operations, but without building unnecessary pres-
sure. Then, the feature of Auto Economy Control (AEC) lowers RPMs when the joysticks are inactive. Also boosting fuel economy and performance are engine improvements such as computer-controlled fuel delivery and variable geometry turbocharging, as
well as automatic matching of engine performance and RPMs to power demands and hydraulic system requirements. “Typical CEGR systems lose fuel efficiency, but with the Case Intelligent Hydraulic System tech-

New model meets Tier 4 interim emissions requirements RACINE, WI — Case Construction Equipment today launched its CX470C full sized excavator. The machine is the newest in the Case C Series excavator line that features increased fuel efficiency, productivity and improved serviceability and operator comfort, while achieving Tier 4 Interim certification. The new Case CX470C excavator replaces the company’s CX470B model. It features Tier 4 Interim certified cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR) technology that burns cleaner while delivering superior horsepower. The CX470C, rated at 362 net hp, is available in Long Undercarriage (LC), Retractable Undercarriage (RTC) and Mass Excavator (MEX) models, with operating weights ranging from 105,300 to 108,600pounds. The CX470C models are roughly 1,100-pounds heavier than the previous model for improved capacity. The CX470C MEX is designed for heavier loads and larger buckets (up to 4.13-squareyards), achieving higher productivity in large excavation jobs and high volume truck loading. The Retractable Undercarriage version provides undercarriage width adaptability for transport between jobsites. “In today’s extremely competitive economy, contractors need machines that will reduce operating costs and boost productivity. The new Case CX470C excavator delivers both,” said Tim O’Brien, brand marketing manager, Case Construction Equipment. “The CX470C joins a product line from Case that sets new standards in fuel economy, productivity and operator environment,” O’Brien said. Municipal yard waste recycling centers have come a long way in the past twenty years or so. One example of that is the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority (VPPSA) Compost Facility in Yorktown, VA. With more than 20 acres of asphalt paved space available for receiving leaves and yard waste, it is an asset in which the communities of Hampton, Poquoson and York County can take great pride. The facility has successfully developed and grown over the years demonstrating that their composting facility is extraordinary. VPPSA is a ten city and county solid waste authority,” said Donald “Donnie” Bonivich, the Compost Facility supervisor for VPPSA, after he dismounted from the facility’s Komptech Topturn X-60 Compost Turner following the turning of one of the facility’s 12 windrows. Members include the Cities of Hampton,
Poquoson, Williamsburg and the Counties of Essex, James City, King and Queen, King William, Mathews, Middlesex and York. The Towns of Tappahannock, Urbanna and West Point are also included.” The facility receives material from residents, communities and businesses, and includes leaves, grass and brush. Brush can be up to 10-feet in length and up to 24-inches in diameter. This past year, the area experienced considerable storm damage from Hurricane Irene, which prompted VPPSA to keep the facility open for an extended period of time to help make storm clean up go more smoothly. “We were taking in storm debris seven days per week for six weeks,” he said. “There was a lot going on from the first of September until mid-October.” Bagged material Donnie said that he gets exceptional support from

They are the first to recognize the need for constant improvements and the importance of working together as a team to keep the facility in first class condition. Recently the facility began accepting bagged leaves from several of the communities. Bagged leaves will be accepted from any member community as long as they are in the approved plastic bags. (Clear, no draw strings and are 0.7 millimeters or less in thickness) There has been an excellent response to this new program, and staff has been experimenting with ways to debag the leaves in increasingly successful ways.” Bonivich said that Mid-Atlantic Waste Systems the company from whom VPPSA purchased the Komptech Topturn also assisted them in modifying an existing piece of equipment to debag the leaves. “We are in our second year of doing this,” he said. “Cutting knives were installed in an older Komptech (Mustang) trommel, and it has been working reasonably well. We can process 200 to 300-yards of bagged leaves per hour.” Making Products As we toured the facility, Donnie explained that the

material is initially ground using a tub grinder and then stockpiled so it can cure for a minimum of three months. During the curing process temperatures in the stockpiled mulch can reach 180 degrees. This process kills off any larva and weed seed that may have been in the material when it arrived, also ensures that the material will be safe to place around a customer’s property. The stock piled mulch goes through the tub grinder once more and is then screened into mulch fines and reground mulch products. The compost facility accepts leaves and grass which is used for making compost. The material is ground in the tub grinder and placed into windrows that are several hundred yards long, 20-feet wide and about seven-feet tall. The windrows are monitored over the next six months to ensure consistency. Donnie said that the facility’s Komptech Topturn X60 self-propelled compost turner really comes in handy for keeping the material aerated and processing properly. “With each windrow containing 1500yards of material, there is quite a bit of compost that
needs to be turned on a regular basis,” he said. “Most of the compost that goes out has been processing at least eight months. We measure the internal temperatures of the windrows and turn them regularly.” When the composting process is complete and the material is ready for sale, they process it through a McCloskey 733 trommel before it is sold to customers. The compost facility offers four products for sale: reground mulch, mulch fines, compost and a soil blend. This can be a busy place. The facility hopes to offer colored mulch in the not too distant future. This product was offered several years ago, but with the economy people were leaning toward the lower prices offered on regular mulch. There seems to be the interest now to offer it again. VPPSA is a member of the U.S. Composting and the newly formed Virginia Composting Council. This patented device allows the turner to pick up all of the windrow, even the very bottom three to four inches which other turners leave behind. It’s in these three to four-inches where huge odor problems start for composters. Because this layer never gets turned, it goes anaerobic and begins to smell. When the windrow is turned the bottom, smelly layer is exposed and odors are allowed to escape. The removable scraper bar rides on the ground surface and picks up this layer preventing any part of the windrow from going anaerobic and thus preventing nasty odors.

Case from 6 nology and engine improvements, we’ve actually increased fuel efficiency on the Case CX470C excavator by five percent over our previous B Series model,” O’Brien explained. “And all of our Case C Series excavator models continue to be in the top of their class for productivity.” Increased productivity With up to five percent faster cycle times than the previous model, the new Case CX470C excavator can move more material and load more trucks per hour. Along with faster cycle times, the new Case excavator offers operators smoother and easier control and maneuverability. The CX470C excavator provides six percent more lift capacity than the previous B Series model. With its standard arm length of 11-foot 1-inch, the Case CX470C excavator has a maximum dig radius of 39-feet 4-inches, a maximum dig depth of 25-feet 4-inches and a dump height of 25-feet 5-inches. The boom and arms, as well as the mainframe and undercarriage structure, have been redesigned for this additional capacity, delivering improved, world class durability. Its standard arm digging force is 42,490pound-foot and standard bucket digging force is 55,530-pound-foot. Available Power Boost technology increases both of these values by approximately 10 percent. The CX470C features a 172 gallon fuel tank and a 122 gallon hydraulic system. Improved operator environment “The Case CX470C excavator provides a highly functional and comfortable environment for the operator, an important consideration in achieving maximum machine productivity,” O’Brien said. Noise reduction improvements, including vibration refinement on the cab’s reinforced tubular structures, create an extra quiet cab environment, with automotive like noise levels as low as 72 dBa. “It’s like being in a car even when the exca-
vator is running at full throttle,” O’Brien noted. As in other eight percent. Standard rearview and optional sideview cameras feed video to a 7inch high definition LED monitor in the cab, enhancing operator confidence and jobsite safety during machine operation.
“The large, clear monitor in the Case C Series excavators compares favorably to what you’d find in a luxury automobile,” O’Brien said. The LED screen also presents to key operating data, including a new function which provides fuel consumption per hour. “Op-
erators can use this information to refine fuel efficiency for their particular operation,” he said. The machine’s low profile design also enhances visibility from the cab, efficiently accommodating Tier 4 emission system components without compromising the opera-
tor’s view of the jobsite. The CX470C excavator also includes a standard air suspension seat and an in-cab auxiliary hydraulic setting system with a new option for 10 memory recall, attachment flow settings to make tool changes quick and easy for operators.

The port facility receiving scrap metals for the nearby steel mill is now unloading barges and filling haul trucks 25 percent faster with its SENNEBOGEN 880 R-HD material handler. HUGER, SC — After commissioning a new 370,000-pound SENNEBOGEN scrap handler at the Kinder Morgan Energy Partners barge facility in the Port of Charleston; the truck fleet use was reduced by 25 percent while still keeping pace with customers’ demand for material. Faster turnaround for Kinder Morgan’s fleet of 100 ton haulers and reducing the impact of rising fuel costs were the main points when SENNEBOGEN approached Kinder Morgan with the concept of the 880 R-HD material handler three years ago. “We move between 1.5 and 3.5 million tons of material out of port here every year,” says Terminal Manager Daryle Wall. “The volumes of our facilities in this area have provided us with experience using every kind of material handler, crane or excavator you can name. We were already looking for an alternative in 2007, when SENNEBOGEN came to us with their idea for the largest electric drive scrap handler in the country. We saw that we had as good a location as you’d want for this type of machine, so we decided to work with SENNEBOGEN on the project.” Constantino Lannes, president of SENNEBOGEN LLC, welcomed Wall’s interest in the project. “It took a leap of faith for Kinder Morgan to step up to the 880 RHD,” he says, “but their application here and their experience with our equipment made them the ideal partner. SENNEBOGEN led the adoption of electric drive material handlers in America. No one had produced an electrically powered unit as large as this, so we needed a test bed to prove the engineering. The 880 R-HD would be a prototype, and it would take time to build
and refine the new machine. “We knew we were the guinea pigs. We didn’t know if it would work, but we wanted to try because of the future sav-
ings which, with the way fuel costs have gone up, turned out to be a pretty good decision,” said Wall. Since the new machine went into operation, diesel deliveries are down more that 20 percent, saving the facility significant costs on a
monthly basis. More throughput with a smaller bite At Kinder Morgan’s Berkeley Operations, a fleet of haul trucks carry up to 140-cubic-yard per load from the dock to nearby stockpiles. At dockside, the unloading
facility had been using rope cranes fitted with 22-yard grapples. The grapple on the 880 RHD machine is half the size, with just a 10-yard capacity, but it keeps the trucks cycling faster, with larger loads. “Our other cranes are
big and run much slower for the job,” says Wall. “They couldn’t accurately fill up the corners of the truck like you can with the smaller grapple. The trucks are moving more towards their capacity at

The 880 R-HD can also run two complete loading cycles per minute into the trucks, against just one cycle with the old machine. The turnaround for our trucks is faster, so we’re unloading the barges faster and doing a better job for our customer.” The crawler mounted material handler simplifies the unloading operation further by being able to traverse the length of the dock under its own power. A powered tether line allows the machine a 400 -foot range of movement to position itself for unloading either of two barges at the dock. With this mobility, there’s no need to winch the barges into place under the crane. Electric is simpler Along with the fuel savings, Wall says that switching to electric drive saves other operating costs as well. “We don’t have to worry about oils, lubricants or engine rebuild costs,” Wall continues. “With a diesel engine, you have the possibility of overheating, which is completely eliminated with the electric motor. The electric motor is a much better solution, causing less downtime. Electric is simpler, much more reliable, much more “accurate” so it eliminates overheating. And it’s quieter, so it’s even better for the operators.” Wall notes that the SENNEBOGEN cab was also welcomed by his operators. “With the cab extended up and out, the operators are able to view the entire barge at once. We have operators asking to transfer down here for that job!” Commitment pays off Having taken a risk to collaborate with SENNEBOGEN on commissioning America’s first 880 R-HD, Wall says the new machine has more than met expectations. “I can’t give enough credit to the SENNEBOGEN service team, Jim Westlake and Bob Marean. They worked through all
the ‘interesting’ challenges that came up along the way — there’re no better guys out there. Being so new, there weren’t a lot of mechanics anywhere trained on this, but they and our dealer’s mechanics have been great about coming out and working alongside our mechanics. And, they’re continuing to stay in touch, monitor the machine’s use and servicing, along with talking to our operators.” “We all committed to this project and it has taken us out further than we ever dreamed,” Wall concludes. He likened the teamwork to that of a family getting together to build a new house for one of the family members. Roskop noted that Continental Biomass Industries (CBI) was called in to design and build the materials processing system. They chose CBI because of the success that they had experienced at the Richmond Recycling Center. There, a CBI system has been operating reliably for the past several years. When it was time to build the new recycling center, As material comes off the incoming conveyor, a worker looks for cardboard to pull from the mix.

CBI was a natural. He recalled that the new facility has been steadily increasing in volume since it opened on Sept. 7, 2011. The increased material flow means that they are accomplishing what we set out to do when the commitment was made to build this facility. Eight products diverted from the landfill The Yorktown plant is currently sorting out eight different recyclable materials that now bypass the landfill. For example, the cardboard, metal, plastic, copper and brass, are sold on the open market. The concrete is retained and crushed on site for sale to contractors as a sub base material with the fine (15/8-inch minus) being used at S.B. Cox’s Taylor Road Landfill as ADC. Asphalt shingles sorted from the material stream are taken to a custom grinder who returns them to be used Asphalt mixes of other companies. The wood waste is ground to create mulch products, boiler fuel, with a portion of the material going to a paper mill as biofuel. “We are constantly looking at waste materials that are brought into our facilities, to see what else we can recycle,” he said. “From the time our excavator operator places a grapple load of material into the input hopper until the remaining waste material goes off the far end of the conveyor, takes only three minutes,” he said. “That gives you an idea of how this equipment and our workers can sort out the incoming material.” As material leaves the input hopper, it initially crosses a Taper Slot Screen where smaller material 15/8-inch or minus are removed and sent to a large storage pit with an auger to keep material moving to the front of the bunker. Larger wood waste is removed during the picking process where it is dropped onto a belt beneath the work area. This takes the larger wood pieces back to the Grizzly where it is ground with the other wood waste. During that process, wood waste passes beneath one of two magnets where nails and other metal debris is removed before going through the grinder. The facility is open for inbound material from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays from 6:30 to noon. At the time of this writing, the system was in operation eight hours per day, Monday through Friday. Cardboard, plastics and vinyl siding is baled individually, with an American Baler with the bundles heading to market when a truckload has accumulated. The baling takes place when a sufficient supply of either material has filled their respective stockpiles in one of the storage bins beneath the conveyors. Cardboard bales routinely run about 1650pounds while the plastic bales run approximately

Cox is a wonderful place to work,” Roskop said, reflecting on how long a number of the employees had been working for the company. “I believe the average longevity of our workers is over 10 years. We all work together to help get things done. We even have people working for the company for more than 40 years.” Roskop said that the current plant configuration allows for future growth with the potential for a second production line sometime in the future. He said that it might possibly include a trommel for sizing wood material as the markets for those products continues to grow. With the dedication that S.B.
