Hey Grinder guy, who makes the best grinder?

Believe it or not, I rarely get this question.

The answer is simple, it’s what I am selling of course!

In the past 10 years, all grinders have made huge improvement thanks to the use of computers.

There are obviously better built machines and not so well built machines. In this business, the more expensive the grinder or shredder, more than likely the more heavy duty built it is. Steel costs money.

The more of it you use to build a machine, the more expensive the cost to build it. It’s that simple.

Grinders and shredders are made to destroy things. The more weight they have, the more they will survive. More and more horsepower are being added, which means more and more steel is needed to support all that horsepower. I can recall when a large V-12 diesel engine had 650 hp and after the advent of computers in the engines, they were pushing well over 1000 hp. Same En-

gine! Then the machines that supported the 650 hp had to support the 1000-plus hp.

So who makes the best grinder? Everyone has an opinion, but one issue usually determines what makes them have that opinion: machine break downs. A lot of times, misuse of equipment causes these problems. If a contractor has a 400 hp grinder, he will grind the same large stump that a contractor with a 1000 hp grinder will grind, because that’s what he has.

The 400 hp machine may not be made to grind large stumps, but because that is what the contractor has, that’s what will be used and repeated use like this will cause breakdowns.

The number one issue you want to address before buying a machine, is SUPPORT. Parts and Service will make or break you. You can purchase the best overbuilt, most horsepower grinder available, but if you have no

product support, it will cost you more money than you can imagine.

So who has the best one?

• Ask current grinder operators what they are using and why?

• Ask current grinder operators if they have owned any other grinders?

• Ask your local grinder Dealer for references and follow up and contact these people.

• Find out what kind of support you can expect?

Dealer service, Manufacturer service?

• If you are working with a Dealer, find out their history with the product and speak with any previous dealers.

• Find out what type and how many grinder spare parts are stocked locally?

When purchasing: • Rent first before buying. This is the number one rule. Rent for a month or two or three and see what kind of production you get, costs you incur and support you receive. It’s easy to walk away from

• Compare replaceable wear liners with other grinders. The more the better. Instead of wearing out the grinder, liners are worn out and replacing them makes the grinder like new.

• Ask what the limitations of the grinder are?

How big of a log does it grind? Can it shred C&D material?

• Get the manufacturers cost per ton per hour sheets. Take these with a grain of salt, don’t expect them to be accurate.

• Look for a remanufactured machine. Check it out and get a warranty.

• Check serviceability.

The easier it is the more employees will do.

• Easy controls to operate machine. The easier to adjust, the more production you will get.

Other issues and items may come up, but if you do your homework during a three month rental period, most everything comes up to help you determine if you are choosing the right machine or not.

Rebranded Construction & Demolition Recycling Association unveiled To more clearly identify with its constituency, the 18 year old Construction Materials Recycling Association has rebranded itself as the Construction & Demolition Recycling Association.

Besides performing a variety of projects to reach that goal, in recent years the organization has grown rapidly, and has expanded its headquarters, staff, and has such offerings as an industry specific safety manual, a concrete recycling white paper, material specific websites for

concrete, asphalt shingles and gypsum, and recently started up a C&D Recycling Hall of Fame to honor those pioneers and leaders in the industry.

As part of its rebranding the CDRA has a new and more fully interactive website that will remain at www.cdrecycling.org. The new, state of the art design will al-

low members to pay dues and other bills online, download association documents and allow for association committee members to have their own areas for their correspondence. Most of the material specific websites the CDRA manages will also have the same design. The website also has features to allow it to

provide other member services in the future.

“For the immediate future of the CDRA we will be developing a strategic plan to harness the tremendous energy the association is generating, as well as look at how we can continue our growth and influence,” says Montecalvo.

Morbark introduces knife edged Wearwolf insert New insert allows customers to break down Palm, chop frozen wood and produce chips in industrial grinders WINN, MI — Morbark, Inc., recently launched the Wearwolf™ Insert, the newest addition to its line of inserts for industrial grinders. Morbark is a leading manufacturer of industrial grinders and chippers for the forestry, biomass, sawmill and wood reduction and recycling industries, as well

With heat treated, knifelike edges on a solid, forged steel insert blank, the Wearwolf cuts material rather than beating it into mulch. USCC announces Lori Scozzafava as new executive director be based in the U.S. Composting Council headquarters in Bethesda, MD. Established in 1990, the USCC is the only national organization in the United States dedicated to the development, expansion and promotion of the composting and organics recycling industry.

The USCC achieves this

mission by encouraging, supporting and performing compost related research, promoting best management practices, establishing standards, educating professionals and the public about the benefits of composting and compost utilization, enhancing compost product quality and developing training materials for

composters and markets for compost products.

USCC members include compost producers, marketers, equipment manufacturers, product suppliers, academic institutions, public agencies, nonprofit groups and consulting/engineering firms. BioCycle, a premier industry periodical, is the official magazine of

the Council.

The USCC is a nonprofit 501(c)(6) organization that also directs the Composting Council Research and Education Foundation (CCREF), a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation, which administers public and private research and education activities.

The United States Composting Council (USCC) is pleased to announce Lori Scozzafava as its new executive director. Ms. Scozzafava is a highly experienced association executive who has been involved in solid waste management for over 25 years. “Lori’s extensive industry and association management experience will help the USCC and its membership reach their goals and rise to a new level,” said Lorrie Loder, president of the USCC. Ms. Scozzafava replaces former USCC Executive Director Michael Virga, who has moved on to other career opportunities. “We truly appreciate all of Mike’s contributions and efforts at the USCC and we wish him the best of luck,” Ms. Loder added.

Ms. Scozzafava was deputy executive director of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) from 2004 through 2012 and has extensive experience managing budgets, government affairs, education and annual conference activities. During her tenure she helped the organization increase membership and revenue. Prior to serving as Deputy Executive Director, Ms. Scozzafava was SWANA’s director of Technical Programs and the Recycling Services Division Manager for the Maryland Department of the Environment.

“This is a great opportunity to bring my association expertise and understanding of the industry to the U.S. Composting Council,” said Ms. Scozzafava. “The timing is perfect to position organics management into national prominence as a major contributor to achieving recycling goals and environmental sustainability.”

Over the years, Michele has developed a good working relationship with several contractors who specialize in tearing down old factories and buildings built with timber frames.

The process Once Michele has worked out the details with a contractor and they have agreed on a price for the wood, her work isn’t always finished. “We work with them to safely and securely load the material onto flatbed trailer loads so that it can be transported here to the plant for processing,” she said. “Initially, some of them need tips on how to take down the structures.

The same goes for our external coatings as well.

The new versatile Terex Fuchs MHL340 E material handler features a more powerful engine with lower fuel consumption SOUTHAVEN, MS — The new Terex® Fuchs MHL340 E material handler boasts a more powerful 173 hp turbocharged diesel engine than the MHL340 D, while at the same time lowering specific fuel consumption by six percent. The new material handler incorporates a simplified Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system for meeting Tier 4i/Stage IIIB emissions standards and uses passive regeneration to clean the diesel particulate filter. “Regeneration occurs automatically during normal operating conditions, so as not to impact machine performance,” says Steve Brezinski, Terex Fuchs product manager.

Its combination of power and reach has made the versatile MHL340 Series material handler a preferred model for a broad range of indoor and outdoor applications, including work at scrap metal feeder yards, municipal solid waste (MSW) processing at recycling/recovery facilities (MRFs), and sorting material at transfer stations. Customers can equip the MHL340 E with

a variety of boom and stick configurations, offering up to a 44.9 foot reach. A multi-purpose stick with 40 foot reach includes a stick mounted hydraulic cylinder to allow up and down movement of the attachment, increasing efficiency in sorting applications. The available Terex Fuchs Quick Connect (FQC) system allows operators to switch from the stick to a shear attachment in less than one minute, boosting machine flexibility and productivity.

The MHL340 E’s revamped high performance two circuit hydraulic system increases main hydraulic pump capacity by three percenrt, compared to its previous version, to improve efficiency and machine responsiveness. Both the engine and hydraulic system include larger cooling systems protected by vented panels that provide increased airflow, so the material handler runs cooler in high ambient temperatures.

A hydraulically height adjustable cab gives operators a maximum eye level elevation of up to 17.7 feet above ground level, simplifying loading

and unloading operations. Its cushioned cab elevation system provides absorption of shocks and jolts for operator comfort.

Inside the spacious cab, updated controls improve operator productivity and comfort. An improvement from the previous model includes a 23 percent larger high resolution/high contrast Wide Video Graphics Array (WVGA) color display, which features an antiglare shield and scratch resistant coating for easier viewing in direct sunlight and improved durability. Color video of the work area behind the machine is captured by the standard rearview camera and shown on the WVGA monitor for easy viewing by the operator. Intuitive controls, including quick-access push buttons for frequently used functions, make for a short learning curve of MHL340 E operation, and the ergonomic multifunction button delivers effortless fingertip navigation through the display screens.

These hardened steel parts are also replaceable via threaded fasteners to reduce labor costs and minimize downtime.

Helping to minimize operator cost, screws have replaced the need for Babbitt on the knives.

A user can now simply adjust the knife via thread fasteners quickly and safely rather than melting Babbitt.

Casey For the outdoorsman who is preparing for their fall and winter sporting activities, the Keystone Outdoor Expo being held at the York Expo Center, York, PA on August 1618, 2013, is the ideal way to start. Hosted and promoted by Richard Huff, III, avid outdoorsman and co-owner of Keystone Valley Ranch, a private deer and elk hunting facility in central Pennsylvania, the three day event begins Friday August 16 at noon and runs through 8 p.m. the first day. Saturday’s activities run from 9:00AM to 7 p.m. while Sunday, the Expo is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“At the Keystone Outdoor Expo, we are looking to provide the outdoorsman with a complete, high quality, experience that will prepare them for their hunting, camping and fishing ac-

tivities at a time that is best suited for their schedules,” said Huff during a recent interview. “We are creating a show that will appeal to attendees and vendors alike. We want to offer show goers the best of the outfitters when it comes to the products and services that attendees are seeking.”

Huff said that with more than 200 exhibitors already signed up for the show, he is looking forward to an event that has something for everyone.

orbark President, Jim Shoemaker, welcomed more than 150 people from six nations to 2013 Spring Demo Days, the first of two such events for Morbark this year. The two day event held May 16 and 17, featured a manufacturing plant tour, equipment demonstrations of nine of Morbark’s grinding and chipping line of products, and a trio of presentations by industry experts who offered insights into marketing opportunities for those in the recycling industry.

Host and Morbark CEO Lon Morey, said that this year’s event looked to highlight innovative machines for biomass production.

Plant tour Dividing up into groups of four to six people each, attendees spent the morning touring Morbark’s massive, 32 acre, manufacturing facility, where they were able to see how the company manufactures their product line from “the ground up.” Noting that it was company founder Norval Morey’s desire to do as much manufacturing in-house as possible, the staff emphasized that by not relying upon sub component manufacturers for many of their product parts, Morbark is able to build equipment with the kind of quality they are seeking. A stop at the hydraulic cylinder shop emphasized the point.

Our tour guide, Michael Stanton, recalled a time in the past when Morbark was having quality issues with hydraulic cylinders that were being supplied from an outside source. Once the problem was resolved, Mr. Morey determined that Morbark and Morbark’s customers were not going to be inconve-

nienced with component parts that did not meet up to his high quality standards for reliability and function.

In short order, Morey implemented his own cylinder manufacturing segment which remains to this day.

Stanton said that this standard of excellence prevails throughout the entire company.

Informational sessions Afternoon activities continued with three seminars focused on how recyclers might more effectively respond to current and future economic and regulatory conditions as they pursue growth in their industry. Bill Turley, Associate Publisher and Editor of C&D World spoke on behalf of the Construction & Demolition Recycling Association as the association’s Executive Director, giving an industry overview of how much business is actually estimated to be “out there” for recyclers in today’s markets.

Delton Dructor, executive vice president of the American Logging Council, recalled recent lobbying efforts in Washington, D.C., where, to his frustration, regulatory agencies do not seem to be working toward the same objectives when it comes to the timber and recycling industry. He said that different agencies often are influenced by groups who are not familiar with timber and timber management. He said that the crossed purposes of differing regulations can tend to put timber industry professionals out of business because the intrusiveness of these regulations.

Delton Alderman, Research Forest Products technologist for the USDA Forest Service, gave a presentation on the future of the housing market. Based on his service’s estimates, he forecasts a slow but steady growth in the housing industry. He said that

While his data supported a modest recovery, he said several indicators show a lackluster recovery at this time.

These factors included new banking regulations, a sluggish economy and a lack of good paying jobs to help fund family housing desires. With consumer confidence still fragile and a declining real median family income level, the strict new home loan lending standards still tend to thwart new homeowner purchases, especially first time home buyers.

Demonstrations On Friday, attendees moved to Morbark’s demonstration area a few miles distant from the plant where they had opportunity to observe nine machines in action. Once the grinding or chipping demonstrations had concluded, they were allowed to gather around each of the pieces of equipment for closer examination. Of special interest was the new configuration of the 40/36 Whole Tree Drum Chipper, re-worked to produce superior microchips for use by pellet mills and as supplemental fuel for cogeneration at coal facilities.

The 40/36 Whole Tree Drum Chipper was first introduced in 2008 as a compact, affordable and productive biomass chipper. The model was improved by the addition of the Advantage 3 high performance chipping drum in 2011, which significantly improved chip quality. The latest model includes an enhanced drum set with 16 knives utilizing standard hardware,

an operator friendly slide-in forestry grate system to reduce oversized chips and a mechanically driven chip accelerator to fully load vans with the microchips.

John Foote, Morbark vice president of Sales and Marketing said that with new biomass plants being built in the United States and the rapid expansion of wood pellet exports to Europe to meet the European Union’s mandate that 20 percent of its energy come from renewable sources by 2020, a cost effective system for making microchips was needed. “This newly re-engineered 40/36 MicroChipper is the solution,” he said. “We are able to produce a far superior product, producing 95-98 percent acceptable microchips at volumes of more than 70 tons per hour.”

The 3200 Wood Hog horizontal grinder was another new product featured during the event. This new unit was created to fill the gap between Morbark’s 2600 and 3800 Wood Hogs for the recycling market and mulch producers. Aimed at wood and green waste recycling applications, the 3200 is a compact and aggressive unit.

“We saw a need for a horizontal grinder in the 400600 horsepower range that was smaller than our 3800 Wood Hog and more powerful than our 2600 Wood Hog,” said Foote. “This is a smaller, lighter and more affordable unit with all of the benefits of our larger grinders.” He noted that the 3200 Wood Hog can handle green waste, regrind, sawmill residue, pallets and logs up to 14-inches in diameter ease. The 30-inch diameter feedwheel is powered by an internal drive Fairfield torque hub with no chains or sprockets for more torque, greater durability and less maintenance. Other standard features include a Poclain infeed chain drive, dust suppression, remote control, air brakes and hydraulic oil cooler.

Other products demonstrated included the Beever M20R Forestry chipper, the 30/36 NCL and 50/48 WCL Track Whole Tree Drum Chipper, the 23 WCL Chiparvestor, the 4600XL and 6600 Wood Hog horizontal grinders, and the 1600 Tub Grinder.

Casey During Morbark’s Demo Days activities, Lon Morey, CEO and host for the two day event, took a few moments between demonstrations, to share his thoughts with WHEN. “We enjoy the opportunity to showcase our people in manufacturing,” said Morey, referring to the plant tour that took place the day before. “The workers produce the quality products that we see here in operation today. We have a great number of long term employees and they take great pride in their work.”

Morey said that while Morbark goes to great lengths to make their products to the highest quality standards, their service after the sale is one of their primary goals in business. With the move to LEAN manufacturing techniques and QRM (quick response manufacturing), Morey said that the improvements in quality manufacturing has emphasized the need for the best service after the sale, possible.

As a testimonial to Morbark product quality, Morey noted the longevity of many of their machines. “We have machines out there that are more than 30 years old that are still in operation,” he said. “We are one of the few companies in the world who stocks parts for machines that have been in service that long. I’ve heard of machines dating back to the 1970’s still in service. Service after the sale has always been important to me.”

Morey recalled how in years past, he served as the head of the parts division of the company. He said that in that role, he regularly had contact with the customer, whose machine was out of service for whatever reason. He said that he gained important understanding from those customers who were awaiting the arrival of a needed part. That was when he became acutely aware of the importance of service after the sale.

“I’ve never forgotten that,” he said. “The customer is most important to us. When their equipment is not working properly, we want it back in service. We are here to support the customers for the long haul.”

New SENNEBOGEN warehouse facility undergoes expansion ahead of schedule STANLEY, NC — The head office of SENNEBOGEN LLC has completed a 45,000square-foot expansion of their new parts warehouse, enabling them to expand the size of North America’s largest and most complete parts inventory for material handlers. With this latest expansion, the facility now totals more than 100,000-square-foot, all under one roof.

Constantino Lannes, president of SENNEBOGEN LLC, reports that the move-in took place in the beginning of 2013.

“Our original building design and site plan anticipated this expansion

when we first developed this facility,” Lannes explains.

“We’re very pleased that we were able to implement this phase of the plan so quickly. We thought it would be a few more years before we needed to expand the warehouse, but both our commitment to customer support and the customer fleet have grown consistently since we first opened the new facility.

We were at the point where we needed to move ahead with the plan when we did.”
