LOCAL NEWS Salem Education Foundation awards annual scholarships By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer The Salem Education Foundation honored seven local students and two teachers of the year Monday night, awarding more than $15,000 in scholarships. The foundation - formed in December 1999 by the Salem Ruritan Club with an initial donation from C.F. Yates for $3,000 - is constantly looking for donations or students to help with scholarships and endowments. Over 20 years the foundation has paid out $251,374.26 through scholarships for students from Culpeper County and Rappahannock County. The SEF has awarded $152,450.70 in scholarships through 2018, with another $75,000 paid out for the Phoenix Fund - a scholarship used to send two students through college. This year, Culpeper County Public School teacher of the year Nicole Harmon, an eighth grade science teacher at Culpeper Middle School, received a $2,000 scholarship. “Over the time you work with them you start to see that while they have that stature of young adults, they are still kids at heart,” Harmon said. “To hear ‘Mrs. Harmon, thanks for taking the time to help me,’ and to realize it came from a 14-year-old boy, it’s kind of a big deal. Those are the moments that make me love it.” Maria Lemus, a senior at Culpeper County High School, received the Gallow Criminal Justice scholarship of $2,000 to attend George Mason University. She credited instructor Gary Close, a former Culpeper County Commonwealth’s Attorney, with sparking her interest in criminal justice. Amber Miller received a $2,000 Billy Simms educational scholarship. She will attend Germanna Community College in the fall. She volunteered at the Culpeper County Library, assisted in setting up the Culpeper

CCHS senior Kendra Callahan received the “Big” Kenny Alphin music scholarship. Callahan, who has performed in numerous choirs and school musicals, will attend George Mason University in the fall. “I have been in choir classes since elementary school and I just fell in love with singing and music,” she said. “Both of my parents are teachers and I just grew up around teaching and I just know that’s what I want to do.” Makayla Jenkins, of CCHS, received the Bill Kyle Memorial Scholarship. A member of the Culpeper County Volunteer Rescue Squad as an EMT, she will attend Christopher Newport University in the fall.

“I love being an EMT so much I want to go to medical school,” Jenkins said. “Just seeing the things we see every day, but to me I see a lot of potential in growth of the emergency medical field and a lot of research that can be done.” EVHS senior Rebecca Schulte received the Alphin Education Scholarship. She’s involved in FFA, the National Honor Society and National Art Society and will attend James Madison University. “My teachers throughout my life and my school career have greatly inspired me to pursue education,” Schulte said. “They have made me who I am today and help me hone my skills and help me make an impact on future generations.” CCHS senior William Jamison Jr. received a $1,500 scholarship. He’s active in basketball, coaching in the
Medford Basketball League and volunteering at his church and local warming shelters. Rappahannock County High School senior Macy Montgomery received a $2,000 scholarship for her efforts in spreading knowledge about Type I diabetes. After she was diagnosed with the disease, she distributed glucose gel packets to schools for students who may suffer from Type I diabetes. “It was something I wanted to do since I was diagnosed because I wanted tell them if they need insulin and elevate your blood sugar, I provided the gel packets and educated teachers about it,” Montgomery said. She will attend Liberty University in the fall studying biomedical sciences. To give to the SEF, mail PO BOX 456, Culpeper, VA 22701.

Housed adjacent to Culpeper Medical Center at 633 Sunset Lane, the new women’s center offers a convenient location and increased access to obstetric and gynecological services for the community. With both primary and preventative care services available to women of all ages, the center is equipped to meet the healthcare needs of women in every stage of life. Providers, trained to understand the changing needs of women over time, offer care for longterm OB/GYN health in adolescent, adult, pregnant, menopausal or postmenopausal and geriatric women. “The decision to open our expansive new UVA Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic at Culpeper Medical Center came in response to our community’s need for greater access to women’s health services,” said Jeff Hetmanski, president and chief operating officer of Culpeper Medical Center. “We’re proud of the space we’ve created where we can serve almost double the number of patients, while still in convenient proximity to our birth center and hospital.” The women’s center offers 9,000 square feet of clinical space including 11 spacious exam rooms, designated areas for minor procedures, ultrasounds and consultations, a fullservice lab for lab work and offices for providers and staff. CULPEPER YOUTH SPOTLIGHT
Shifa Teweri (Editor's note: This is weekly series highlighting members of Culpeper's Youth Council. To join Culpeper Youth, go to www.culpeperyouth.org to apply.) It’s the final countdown! The amount of relief I felt when I heard the last bell ring on May 10th was crazy. No more standardized tests, no more needing to ask to go to the restroom, and no more school lunches. I got to sleep in while my mom and sister had to go back to school on Monday and Tuesday. Now don’t get me wrong, I love having this time to wind down. After years of slaving over essays, projects, and studying for exams, I think I deserve some downtime. But a part of me still misses seeing my teachers and other members of faculty who made graduating possible. There were quite a few people behind the scenes who really helped me out these past four years. So to all the teachers who let me rant to them, or stayed after school to help me out, or even just made my day better with a simple hello, thank you for everything you’ve done. Graduating does not seem real just yet. I still haven’t attended graduation practice, put on my cap and gown, or walked across the stage. I’m sure when I do, though, I won’t forget it. All the struggles and trials I went through will be all worth it then. I’ll miss my friends and teachers, and all the amazing memories I’ve made, but I’m excited to start a new chapter in my life at Bridgewater College.

Walk MS Culpeper set for Saturday ➤ John Driggers has become the face of MS in Culpeper County for the last 20 years By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer John Driggers won’t let Multiple Sclerosis take his sense of humor. For 20 years Driggers has battled MS and has become the face of the disease in Culpeper County. Usually, that face has a smug grin and a quick quip to go along with it. Unfortunately, residents don’t get to hear his sense of humor as much as they used to. His wife Janet explained that his once daily trips out of the house to visit Starbucks are no more - now he’s lucky to leave their home once a month. ➤ See Walk MS, Page 5

➤ Walk MS, from Page 4 “We have help coming in three times a week,” Janet said. “He does not want me to be his caregiver, he wants me to be his wife. His energy level has really gone downhill.” Janet and her Carefree Cruisers team will be raising money for MS research Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. at Culpeper Baptist Church as part of Walk MS. John hopes to attend, but it depends on how he feels that day. He missed last year’s event where Janet and her team raised $10,500. This year, her goal is to raise $15,000 but as of last week she was only around $4,000 raised. “Culpeper is one of the smallest areas for the walk and our biggest goal is to educate people and have people come out,” Janet said. “Everybody knows somebody who has cancer. With MS, it’s still that silent disease.” Claire Lorio, Development Manager of Walk MS, said that a recent study showed about 1 million people in the United States suffer from MS. In Virginia, that number is estimated to be between 20 and 25,000. “It’s about raising awareness and raising funds to support re-

search to find a cure,” Lorio said. “We’re not going to find a cure if we don’t support research. The other side of it is bringing more people into the event and into the society. I think Walk MS is probably the easiest way for people to get engaged with what we’re doing for the first time.” She points out that there’s no requirement to fundraise and no registration fee, she encourages people to come out, support their local teams and simply learn about the disease. The number of those suffering with MS doubled since the last prevalence study - which was done 30 years ago, Lorio said. “People are being diagnosed a lot younger,” Lorio said. “We have pediatric neurologists who are treating patients as young as 7. We still don’t have a cause for this, which is why we don’t have a cure, which is why our work is so critically important still. We don’t know what triggers it, that piece is still a mystery to us.” She said while Culpeper is one of the smaller areas, they always have a good turnout at the walk. “In our market we are seeing people come out in force,” Lorio said. “We have about 15 walk events we host in Virginia and West Virginia, we have about

6,000 people registered. About 2,000 of those people are first time walkers.” She attributed the recent revelation of actress Selma Blair sharing her diagnosis as helping increase awareness of the disease. Last year, Walk MS raised $40 million. Since 1988, the walk has raised more than $1 billion. The National MS Society and the National Institute of Health are the largest providers of research, last year $34 went into research for 30 projects, with six projects in Virginia and West Virginia to a tune of $3 million.

“There’s some pretty amazing work happening right in our backyard,” Lorio said. Janet welcomed the community to turn out to Walk MS and stop by their tent for coffee, a donut and conversation. Janet said that’s why their family supports the walk each year, to help fund the research so people like John don’t have to suffer in silence. The Culpeper welcomes residents with grand opening ➤ 125,000 square foot facility provides premium care as a fivestar continuing care retirement community By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer The Culpeper welcomed its residents and the community to its new state-of-the-art facility during a grand opening hosted by multiple chambers of commerce Friday. The grand opening of the $33.5 million, 125,000-square-foot project is scheduled two years to the day of the groundbreaking. The new building replaces the original brick structure built in the1940s and faces the Blue Ridge Mountains. Residents in the current building transitioned to the new building at the beginning of May. Rose Meeks Wallace, Director of Marketing for The Culpeper, pointed out that The Culpeper is a true five-star continuing care retirement community, licensed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Only 20 percent of nursing homes in America are rated five stars, and The Culpeper is the only one within a 50-mile radius that is able to say that. “In our rich 70 year history, with growth, transition and some changes, it has become evident that The Culpeper is a magical place,” Wallace said. “So magical in fact, that we can show you our past and at the exact same time show you our future.” The Culpeper Executive Director Jim Ja-
cobsen pointed out that preserving the history of the organization. The brainchild of Culpeper Baptist Church pastor Dr. James Thomas Edwards in 1931, The Culpeper opened in 1948 at the Milliman House in Culpeper. In 1946, 98 acres of land was purchased and in April 1951 the current location was opened. Now 70 years old, it was time to upgrade - but they wanted to be able to keep the rich history alive. They incorporated many familiar aspects of the old building - including a heritage wall as soon as you enter the front of the new building. “God has seen fit to have you be an integral part of a human bridge that is spanning between the structure that has been our incredible journey and served us well for over 70 years and our future as we build for tomorrow,” Wallace said during the grand unveiling of the property. Virginia Sen. Bryce Reeves and U.S. Senator Mark Wallace presented flags to The Culpeper. The flags Reeves presented flew at the state capitol in Richmond and were hoisted at The Culpeper Friday afternoon. “The flag has a special meaning especially to those who have worn the cloth of the country, it represents freedom and liberty around the world,” Reeves said. “We truly have the opportunity to stand for something in this country - for freedom, for fairness and for liberty. These are the things worth fighting for.” The flag Warner presented will be displayed in the front of the new building. “There are remarkable things continuing to go on across our Commonwealth and in communities all around Virginia and all ➤ See The Culpeper, Page 10

Young Life Capernaum 'fun' for students with special needs By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Christian Miranda smiles broadly when you bring up Young Life Capernaum. The 2016 Eastern View graduate says the club is a highlight of his week, and he looks forward to meeting every second and fourth Tuesday at Culpeper United Methodist Church. The club for students with differing abilities, started this past year by Young Life, hosted its end of year picnic Tuesday at Yowell Meadow Park. Culpeper Young Life director Will Orr said the club has been in discussions for years, started by late Young Life director Jeff Stables. Last spring, Culpeper United Methodist Church pastor Randy Orndorff and members of his congregation approach Orr about trying out the club - and it was met with a great response. About 10-15 students with disabilities came forward for fellowship, fun and communing with the Lord at the first meetings and this past fall the club officially formed. “I was thinking through it already and they (CUMC) said one day they’d like to help,” Orr said. “It is a sight to see, it is so cool. It’s a really vibrant community there, it’s really sweet to see.” Orr said Stables would host a weekly meeting with two gentlemen with special needs and he was always talking about starting Capernaum in Culpeper. “He was always praying about it, he just wanted to move any barriers for anyone involved,” Orr said. “He was always talking about it. I had some friends that did it in their communities and asked how they started it.” Young Life Capernaum gives young peo-
ple with intellectual and developmental disabilities the chance to experience the fun and adventure, to develop fulfilling friendships and to challenge their limits while building self-esteem through club, camp and other exciting activities. Miranda said he met Orr at Eastern View the two became fast friends and he now considers him a mentor. “I met Will at Eastern View and we met a couple of times and then he gave me his phone number,” Miranda said. “We always go to the library and we go everywhere.” Capernaum is a great time to get together with other students with differing abilities to just enjoy each other’s company, he said. “I enjoy having fun, singing and playing games,” Miranda said. Megan Sweeney, CCHS special education teacher and volunteer leader for Young Life Capernaum, said she hears from the students in the hallways about how much they enjoy the club. “It’s definitely very joyful, it’s high energy,” Sweeney said. “They love dancing and singing. We do open mic at the end of every club and that’s always a big hit. We always try to come up with a silly game.” While geared toward students with disabilities, students in regular education get involved by being volunteers. Sisters Nadia and Sage Marshall have a cousin with special needs, and that drew them into Capernaum. “It’s just a good thing to get involved in and see all the kids get together and be happy,” Nadia, 17, a senior at CCHS, said. “ I’ll see them in the halls in school and they’ll always talk about it.” Sage, a sophomore, took it a step further ➤ See Capernaum, Page 18

K&M Lawn, Garden & Arborist Supply awards lawn mower to Waynesboro man Contributed report Spring is right around the corner and Larry L. Bryant of Waynesboro will be ready. He was pleased to learn that his name had been called during the NBC Channel 29 6 p.m. news broadcast on Feb. 27 as a winner in the Go For The Gold Sweepstakes. Mr. Bryant said he wasn’t home at the time and didn’t actually see the drawing, but when he walked in his door his phone was ringing telling him his name had been called. He didn’t waste any time calling to claim his prize – a new 48” Scag Freedom Z riding mower. Bryant said it currently takes him about 2-1/2 hours to mow his lawn with an older lawnmower so he said the timing could not have been better because he was getting to the point when he was going to have to invest in a new mower. For the fifth year in a row K&M Lawn, Garden & Arborist Supplies has participated in the NBC Channel 29 Sweepstakes and has had the pleasure of giving away a Scag riding mower, and in fact K&M also gave away a Stihl trimmer in addition to the Scag mower. Buck Hitt, General Manager of K&M Lawn, Garden & Arborist Supplies said “Channel 29 is always great to work with and the drawing brings in fresh faces from surrounding counties.” Hitt said, “We are very appreciative of the support we receive from our distributors.” Chris Martinelli, Territory Manager from KPM, was on hand when the Scag keys were presented to Mr. Bryant. Visit K&M’s retail store and service center at 16033 Ira Hoffman Lane, Culpeper, Virginia 22701, (540) 825-8371, which is open Monday – Friday from 7:30
a.m. to 5 p.m., and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. every Saturday. You can also visit K&M’s equipment rental location at 801 Germanna Highway in Culpeper, Virginia. Check out our website at www:kmlawngardenarborist.com and like us on Facebook.

pleased to continue working with LEAP to offer residents accessible roof-top solar options through the Solarize Piedmont campaign, which allows residents to take an active role in Virginia’s clean energy future,” said Chris Miller, PEC President. Home and business owners interested in exploring their solar options can sign up today at www. pecva.org/solarize. There is absolutely no commitment until, and if, you sign a contract with an installer. “Now more than ever energy efficiency and solar solutions are vital to securing a clean energy future for Virginia. We are proud to partner with PEC to make solar accessible for home and business owners in their service area,” said Chris Meyer, Executive Director for LEAP. This year, there is a special offer for Charlottesville and Albemarle residents. Through support from the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County, residents who sign up for the Solarize Piedmont campaign, can also take advantage of a free Home Energy Check-up by one of LEAP’s certified Building Analysts. Resident Sara Gallagher, who lives in the cottage on the property, said she was excited to see her neighbors move into their new home. “It’s wonderful,” Gallagher said. “I don’t regret a minute I’ve come here.” The old facility will be razed come Fall, opening up a new view for residents to be able to see the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are 133 units at The Culpeper with a wait list that’s truly impressive. Wallace said there is a priority membership list that has close to 40 people on it and they are actively working with about 300 people. “We have become a destination community,” Wallace said. “We’re off the I-95 corridor and we are also the eighth growing spot in Virginia. Riggins pointed out two key issues he had - one of them that they relied too heavily on entry fees for operations and the second - that they had an aging asset in Culpeper. “I believe we’ve got our use out of that aging asset,” Cook said. “I wish Hunter could be here today because

connects you with trusted, vetted contractors. • It’s More Affordable than Ever: By leveraging the collective buying power of you and your neighbors, Solarize Piedmont is able to offer discounted prices and qualified, local installers. Overall, the cost of home solar has dropped more than 70 percent since 2010. Prices offered during previous campaigns have come down 25 percent from 2014 to 2017, and every year, Solarize prices tend to be between 10-15 percent lower than comparable retail proposals. • In addition, 2019 is the last year for the full 30 percent federal tax credit. After this year, the credit decreases each year, phasing out completely in 2021. LEAP and PEC will connect participants with information on the 30 percent federal tax credit and local incentives, such as real estate tax credits. • It’s the Smart Choice to Head Off Rising Energy & Environmental Costs: The Energy Information Administration projects a 2 percent annual rise in residential energy rates for the Mid-Atlantic. FILM • “Hotel Rwanda”(United Artists, 2004) Shown in observance of the twentyfifth anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, which occurred during the spring of 1994, “Hotel Rwanda” stars Don Cheadle and Sophie Okonedo as hotelier Paul Rusesabagina and his wife Tatiana, and documents their acts to save the lives of his family and more than a thousand other refugees by providing them with shelter in the besieged Hôtel des Mille Collines. The film was nominated for multiple awards, including Academy Award nominations for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Screenplay and was on a number of film critics’ top 10 best films lists for 2004. In the San Francisco Chronicle, Mick LaSalle wrote that the film was a "harrowing experience", and that "it documents for a mass audience what it was like. It's useful, in that it shows how it can happen. It's even hopeful, in that it shows that it's possible - not guaranteed, but possible - for people to maintain their humanity in the face of unhinged barbarism." 35mm archival print. Greeks still bearing gifts A lifetime devoted to classical theatre; thirty-two years at the helm of the Shakespeare Theatre Co.; founding faculty member of The Julliard School’s Drama Division; mentor and friend to actors from London to New York, to L.A.; honored by every means through which the world acknowledges theatre greatness – Michael Kahn is making his final bow and has chosen one last theme with which to close his career. He chose “justice.” In keeping with his scholarly passion for the classics, not to mention an ambition that makes all visions possible, Mr. Kahn turned to the ancient Greek dramatist, Aeschylus, and his tragic trilogy, “The Oresteia.” We no longer worship Dionysus, and not since Anytime, BCE have crowds sat outdoors for up to twelve hours watching men in masks reenact ancient stories. a mite different from ours, but at heart, people still want tension and conflict in a tale that matters. We want art that tells us the truth. We want to be moved. Playwright Ellen McLaughlin, who has considerable experience interpreting the classics, was tasked with remaking the story of Agamemnon and the cursed House of Atreus palatable to modern audiences. We know the original took an entire day to perform because it’s the only Greek trilogy that still exists in its entirety. Now, without losing the central problem and characters, “The Oresteia” is an accessible three acts in just over two hours. Clytemnestra, tormented wife and mother, contemplates the ten years since Agamemnon left for the Trojan war full of righteous rage over the wrong done his brother, Menelaus. In flashback, the reason for her bad dreams and obsession over “cleaning house” emerges. The gods, responding to a previous curse, wouldn’t send him a sailing wind. To appease them, he murdered his daughter, the young Iphigenia (Simone Warren). Kelley Curran brings an icy

➤ Curtain Calls, from Page 16 conquering warrior, Agamemnon (Kelcey Watson) returns, bringing with him one of the spoils of war – the Trojan princess, Cassandra, (Zoe Sophia Garcia) forever cursed to prophecy accurately but not be believed. It’s no strain on Clytemnestra’s wrath to dispense with Cassandra as well as her husband. Now who will avenge the death of Agamemnon? Enter his grown children, Electra (Rad Pereira) and Orestes (Josiah Bania) who, with the help of their father’s ghost, will send their own mother to her reward. The cycle of violence and revenge, begun in the shadowy mists of human history, appears to have no end. It is only in the last segment, what Aeschylus called “The Eumenides”, that a new possibility emerges: Trial by jury. Originally, Orestes was driven by the Furies to Athens where Athena and Apollo presided over a game-changing trial between the gods and the Furies. That notion of higher impulses versus revenge survives in this version, but it is members of the chorus who do most of the testifying. The choice is still between more blood, or blood washed away.

What: “The Oresteia” Adapted from the trilogy by Aeschylus Where: Shakespeare Theatre Company, Sidney Harman Hall, 610 F St. NW, Washington, D.C. Call: (202) 547-1122 or visit ShakespeareTheatre. org. Playing through June 2 In spite of the profound conflict at the heart of the play, there is a certain formality to the deliveries, as if English can never quite free itself from the image of temples and columned figures. Dialogue is less conversation and more monologues delivered at one another. And because the darkness of the theme is a given from the outset, there is little variation, but for the occasional injections of humor, like stray punctuation, that move the needle from a settled point. A few exceptions erupt, such as Agamemnon’s buffeting by the gods, or Orestes’ impassioned despair at the fateful web he has been drawn into. Clytemnestra, too, breaks her own cool reserve, but only once – and at the point of a knife. And Cassandra, in her brief role, receives the inevitable bad news that no one will believe from gods that no one can see. Those invisible gods are among the most interesting points of the play, for they make their opinions known, suddenly and mercilessly.

Susan Hilferty’s scene design centers on one enormous rectangular house – or is it a tomb? – painted in streaked red and huddled close under tall, foreboding cliffs. Her costumes, too, are simplified; earthy, functional wear for the “chorus” and Greek-inspired lines for the aristocrats, a.k.a. “the murderers.” If delivery doesn’t always pack the punch that one would like, Cricket Myers’ sound design does, with themes and undertones that stretch the nerves tight. denouement and delivers it with thoughtfulness and candor. In his own words, the fundamental problem is: “By what means can we put an end to the terrible cycle of violence and retribution?” A question for all times, especially present times. “We may never resolve this question…but I do know that it starts in recognizing our own collective humanity.” Thank you, Michael Kahn, for everything. Kim Brads said her son Colin was involved in Roanoke and it was exciting to see the club start in Culpeper. “It is something they can almost own,” Kim said. “They’re so happy and feel like this is a place where they can do whatever do. Sometimes in the public they are looked at as quirky and different, this is a safe space.” She also praised the students who volunteer, pointing out how special it is to the students with differing abilities. “It makes a difference because it helps these kids feel like they have a friend,” Kim said. Wendy Vest’s daughter Tiffany attended the club when they lived in Culpeper, but they recently moved to Orange. She brought her back Tuesday so she could enjoy the picnic with her friends. “When we were in town, Tiffany was going to CCHS and Miss Sweeney was picking her up to come to Young Life,” Wendy said. “She loves it. This year she formed a united track team at CCHS, including students with differing abilities. “I feel like everyone should be included in everything, there shouldn’t be any boundaries,” she said. “I’m hoping next year we can do a longer season and get more people involved with it.” The two interacted with students at Capernaum, playing baseball and laughing along with them. Sweeney said the club has provided another activity for students with special needs. “I think it’s a huge need, there’s not a lot available in Culpeper - but there’s nothing like this,” Sweeney said. Orndorff said he had been praying about incorporating students with special needs but wasn’t aware of Capernum until Kim and Tony Brads started attending CUMC. They had come from Roanoke where there was a club and that led to him reaching out to Young Life to inquire about starting a club here, with CUMC hosting at their fellowship hall. “I think sometimes our special needs families are underserved, especially in the church world,” Orndorff said. “We have a number of special needs families in our church. Bill was an adventurer as a young man, but his fierce devotion to family always brought him back home. His sudden passing devastated our family. In the months following his passing, our family began
talking about how we could honor him and give back to the community in his name. We began by awarding two scholarships to students from the high school on Long Island where he taught for many years. After several years we decided to look at organizations in our community, where most of his family now lives. To this day the loss is still fresh, even after 15 years, but his spirit will live in us forever!

very least a period of contemplation before moving forward. I believe that The Fool and The Hermit combined are telling us that we can confidently take the leap of faith we’re being shown because we have in fact done the work of meditating on it to find the answers. If you haven’t given the time and effort of inner reflection about taking this risk, the only way it can be safely done is if you take the time and go within to make sure it’s right for you. If your leap of faith is backed by the wisdom of The Hermit, by all means, LEAP! Cara Cutro is a spirit centered teacher and life coach residing in Sperryville, VA.
