SANDWICH SHOP
Steak N’ Cheese, Please! Pat White & Meaghan Helme
Family, a high commitment to quality, and community are the founding ingredients used when Pat White cooks up a new business idea. While spending well over 30 years in the food and beverage industry, owning and establishing franchises, Steak N’ Cheese, Please! is the epicure of his expertise, and its making me hungry!
Opening in February of 2023, with daughter Meaghan Helme, Steak N’ Cheese, Please! hit the ground running. They opened their doors with a carefully thought-out menu that incorporates soft breads, fresh toppings, high quality meats and custom sandwiches – all tailored to your tastebuds.
“Nobody else does a steak and cheese like we do!” said Pat. “The Philadelphia perception of it is it’s just a cheese steak but for us we want you to pick di erent cheeses, di erent toppings, and get it how you want it. That’s what we are bringing.”
Pat started his journey in the restaurant business on December 5, 1987, when he went to work for a pizza franchise here in Culpeper during his senior year in high school. This was a special day that ignited the passion for the fast-paced life of the food industry, and as he would later come to nd out, it was also his future wife, Kathy’s birthday.
Growing up on his father’s farm o Mount Pony Road, Pat learned how to work hard for what you want. Before he could even drive, legally, he had a job at Culpeper Music and played drums in a band for the owner
Tommy Reynolds. Pat learned to give his all in all he did, and that ethic eventually led him to 25 years in the pizza industry and another 12 years in the sub sandwich industry where he opened many new franchise locations in Northern Virginia and Culpeper.
Meaghan also carries the passion for the family business, bringing with her a re, hard work and love for good food and exceptional service. Together, Meaghan and Pat are building their own brand that invites everyone to experience what they love to do as a family. No matter what part of the country you’re from, you can get a steak and cheese made fresh, the way you like it by the greatest father and daughter team!!
As 4th and 5th generation residents to Culpeper, Pat and Meaghan believe in supporting the community. You may nd Meaghan hosting a spirit night for one of the schools, or maybe see Pat participating at the Culpeper Car Show and donating sandwiches to the volunteers. They are excited to give back to the community and love o ering something deliciously unique to Culpeper’s growth.
“Through this entire journey, I have enjoyed working hard and learning about other people and being active in the community and most of all working with my family to build this business. Stop in and you may see my 10 year old Granddaughter Layla working the register and making people happy.”
CHILD CARE
Kid Central & Culpeper Head Start Dorenda Pullen
“Children are the living messages that we send to a time we will not see” – John Kennedy
For Dorenda Pullen, CHS Early Childhood and Adolescent Program Director, getting Culpeper’s children set up and ready for their futures has been a life-long career, and passion. She has spent the last 30 years in working with children and families, ensuring that Culpeper’s little ones were safe and comfortable after school, while providing educational and socialization opportunities.
Kid Central and Culpeper Head Start have remained a pillar within this community. They not only provide school age child care and an early pre-school education for ages B-5, but they have been opening doors for parents who may not have otherwise been able to a ord the quality services that they provide. Implementing individualized services for all as needed ensures that all children who attend can bene t and get a strong educational foundation.
“We do everything from supporting youth to impacting the community in so many ways. Parents have been able to have childcare! They not only have care around the elementary school day and during summer, but pre-school and childcare opportunities during the day for their younger children.”
Early childhood and adolescent programs have been Dorenda’s
connection for the last 31 years. While Kid Central is focused on School Age & Preschool Before & After school care, the goal of Head Start programs is to support the mental, social and emotional development of Culpeper’s children from birth to 5-years-old. In addition to educational services, Head Start provides children and their families with wealth of supportive services including health, nutrition, social and early intervention.
“Over the years, since the inception of Kid Central, we have always had a strong relationship with the public school system, but also with community partners in general. Culpeper Human Services being the mothership of our community programs has always been known in this Culpeper for their partnerships and community collaborations. Not reinventing the wheel, they have been able to bring the decision makers to the table and meet the needs of our community”
Administrators, Sta and Educators here are teaching children and working with families from their hearts. For most, this is not just a job. They have made the career choice to love and guide children, and that creates environments for our youth where they can thrive!
“Kids are thrilled to be at school. Sometimes you will even have kids coming back to see the sta well into high-school years, because the foundation that has been made, and the love for learning that these educators provide truly gives these children is a real head start!”

CLEANING SERVICE
Merry
Maids Will Johnson
In 2006, Will Johnson made the leap from the furniture industry to the management of Merry Maids franchises. Now, he owns three separate locations in Culpeper/Warrenton, Richmond, and Fredericksburg and takes pride in the work that his team does that ultimately improves the lives of people within the community in multiple ways.
“We really enjoy giving people time back in their busy lives; cleaning is a chore that was left to the weekend and that cut into their free time,” Johnson said. “We say: relax, it’s done – you can go enjoy a soccer game with your kids or a baseball game or whatever it might be.”
In addition to providing services for Merry Maids’ regular clients, Johnson’s franchises also partner with Cleaning for a Reason, a nonprofit organization that brings together cleaning companies with cancer patients to provide free cleanings of their homes. Johnson says that ultimately a number of those clients became customers.
As a longtime community member with nearly two decades in the industry, Johnson is well-connected with other businesses and organizations in the area from carpet cleaners and power-washing
providers to gutter cleaners and window cleaners, Johnson can connect customers with other reliable service providers.
“We try to nd other services for our customers that we’ve vetted so we’ve become sort of a one-stop shop,” he said. “We’re always trying to nd those great contractors in the market that we can recommend that we have personal experience with. And it’s really handy for a move-in/move-out type cleaning.”
Johnson credits the dedication of the management team to its employees as the reason for his franchise’s success. He says that they’re mindful of ensuring that their sta have every opportunity to make the maximum amount of money in the industry. They also o er exibility with schedules and only operate Monday through Friday to allow employees the ability to utilize their weekends however they choose.
Outside of work, Johnson enjoys activities in the area like hiking and supporting local restaurants, noting that there’s no shortage of ways to interact with the community. “There are great places to frequent in Remington, Culpeper, Warrenton, and surrounding areas,” he said. “There’s an abundance of activities in our community from breweries and wineries to hiking to live music.”
WINERY
“Follow your heart and live for your passion!”
Some may say that as a winery ages, it becomes better with time. Its avor palette has grown to be smoother, yet more complex, and the fabrics that it began with grow vibrant and telling. As one of the oldest and largest wineries in Virginia, Prince Michel Vineyard is the perfect illustration of this, having become a destination for those seeking to know what Virginia wine is all about.
Owner Kristin Easter has spent the last 20 years pouring her heart and soul into Prince Michel, evolving it into the destination it has become today. Though her background started in Yacht design, she eventually bought a farm in Charlottesville that included a small vineyard. The grapes were sold to Prince Michel and other wineries, but agriculture was never her main focus. However, when Prince Michel became available for sale in 2005, Kristin wasn’t shy to dive right in and breathe new life into the traditional Perisian Vinerie.
Today, Prince Michel is an open door for wine lovers and those who are new to the delicate and complex tastes. With a new Winemaker and Sommelier, Bryan Jones and his assistant Mat Bryant, a
fresh direction is bringing in new style while still preserving the established grace of the Prince Michel collection.
Wine is only the beginning at Prince Michel. In 2019, Kristin expanded the gamut by adding Tap 29 Brewery & Pub. Here, you can enjoy craft beers and indulgent pub fare in the inviting and open setting. If you don’t know about wines, don’t worry, the sta here are like family. They eagerly await a conversation with you that will illuminate the avors and varieties of your experience. Personal tastings with the winemaker are a new addition to the services Prince Michel o ers, dispensing one-on-one interactions and tours of the facility.
Kristin has also arguably built the best gift shop from Culpeper to Charlottesville. With her passion for design, she and Karen Newton have curated an eclectic mix that includes all price points; unique items you just can’t get elsewhere. You will nd Murano Italian Glass and Myra handmade leather bags – camping gear, children’s items, natural skincare and Biker Gnomes.
After 20 years of hard work and high spirits, it’s time to celebrate! Treat yourself to a true Virginia experience and let the goodness ow down from the grapes, to you.

MACHINE SUPPLY
Culpeper Machine & Supply Co. Brandon Feagan & Corey Twomey
Standing upon a mountain of local history, childhood friends Brandon Feagan and Corey Twomey have taken the reigns of Culpeper Machine & Supply Co., upholding a local legacy over 50 years in the making.
The retirement of brothers Charlie and Allen Feagan, who ran Culpeper Machine for over 4 decades, encouraged Brandon and Corey to step up to the plate. Neither were ready to see that part of Culpeper and their own history end. So, as of April 2024, Brandon and Corey became new business owners of the dependable trade, continuing to uphold the standard of service that has carried them through half a century.
Culpeper Machine has been deeply rooted in the community since its opening in 1973 by Col. Wade Hampton Hitt, a WWII and Korean War hero from Culpeper. Brothers Charlie and Allen Feagan took over in the early 1980s after Hitt had retired, spending over 40 years completing projects for agricultural, industrial, automotive and residential customers.
Brandon had worked alongside his father and uncle throughout his childhood. When he became old enough to drive, he ventured out on his own, pursuing a career in aviation that he thrived in. However, making the decision to come back to Culpeper Machine was easy for Brandon. Though he misses his work in aviation, the roots of Culpeper Machine run deeper.
“My dad knows everybody because of the shop. From ages 10-16 I spent all summer here. If we let it go, what would I say to all the people in town? The community needs us,” said Brandon.
Corey obtained an education in industrial maintenance, and t right into the role at the shop. Charlie himself had recruited Corey over six years ago. After three years, Charlie could step back as Corey stepped right into running the business, performing the day-to-day operations of the shop.
“People come here all the time with crazy, random stu that nobody else will do.”
They x parts for sawmills. They can rethread parts that are worn, making the piece usable again, often saving lots of money for customers. They made a huge rocker plate for a bridge that crossed over 64, and with their new Plasma CNC table, they can cut anything you can draw. Culpeper Machine is also the only place in town that you can buy metal, weld supplies, and gasses.
“We also x a lot of farm equipment,” said Corey. “We can Rebrase hydraulic lines for old tractors when you can’t get the pieces for them anymore.”
Corey and Brandon are anticipating eventually moving Culpeper Machine into the county. They would like to get a big steel single level building centralized in the community and be able to expand their inventory and o er delivery.
As the two continue to hold up the legacy, they stand on the original foundation of Culpeper Machine.
“If we can help you, we will!”

MUSEUM
Carver 4–County Museum Hortense Hinton-Jackson
There is a rich, colorful history that surrounds Culpeper, laying the foundation and pulse of our thriving community. One remembers days of old that demonstrated the bonding of a people, and the growth of us all as we evolved out of segregation, 10 years past due. Signi cant pieces of this history can be found today at the Carver 4-County Museum, where the stories of African American perseverance and togetherness came to fruition, enriching their families and communities. Thanks to the George Washington Carver Regional High School Alumni Association (GWCRHSAA), all are welcome to partake in the account.
Long before it was ever a museum showcasing this living history, the Carver building was the rst and only regional high school designed and constructed in Virginia to serve four counties of African American students seeking a secondary education. Opening in 1948, The George Washington Carver Regional High School allowed African American students from Culpeper, Orange Rappahannock and Madison educational opportunities that were not easily accessed elsewhere in the Commonwealth.
The students here often thrived, enriching the community in many ways. Their football team was well known throughout the county, and their marching band’s performance was sought after each year at the Culpeper Parade. Carver also held an annual 4 County Fair,
demonstrating the life and abundance that the school provided.
Brown v. Board of Education was decided in 1954, deeming segregation in public schools illegal. However, it wasn’t until around 1963 that desegregation began to take place in all four counties. As this happened, enrollment began to diminish at Carver and by 1968 there were only 11 graduating students. After that, the name of the school was removed and the building became home to various other entities, including the Piedmont Technical Education Center.
“This is not just our history, but the history of the entire region….as we went from segregated communities, to desegregated communities, Carver’s closing was the end of an era of segregated education” said Hortense Hinton-Jackson, President of the museum’s Board of Directors. “The museum wants to tell this story. It remains signi cant to the community and American history.”
An alumni association has been active since the late 1960’s. Revitalized in 1994, the mission of the GWCRHSAA, Inc., is to maintain communication with the alumni, document history of the school, and promote educational opportunities through scholarship awards. Visit to learn about the persistent parents, teachers, the teams and Principal Harvey Fleshmon. Commemorate the rst registered African American voters and understand the di erence that strong women can make. Rediscover our history!
THE ARTS
Windmore Foundation for the Arts Lauren Antley Wynn
Windmore Foundation for the Arts, a longtime cornerstone of the Culpeper community, is setting the stage for an exciting new chapter.
Having just celebrated its 40th anniversary, Windmore is entering its fth decade with fresh energy and vision, continuing its mission of nurturing local talent and creativity. At the heart of this transformation is the foundation’s new home in the iconic State Theatre, where Windmore will further its e orts to provide artistic opportunities for all ages.
“We are building a true home for the arts here in Culpeper,” says Lauren Antley Wynn, Executive Director of Windmore. “This move allows us to expand our o erings, reach more people, and showcase the incredible talents of our community in a venue that has its own rich history and charm.”
Since its inception, Windmore’s mission has been to provide meaningful arts experiences for the citizens of Culpeper and the surrounding counties. From its youth ne arts program to its acclaimed StageWorks Community Theater, Windmore serves as a vibrant hub of artistic activity. Other key programs include the Piedmont Community Band, Pen to Paper literary arts groups, the growing homeschool enrichment program, and emerging visual arts and diversity programming.
“At the core of Windmore’s work is its belief in the power of the arts
to transform lives. Arts aren’t just about what happens on stage,” says Stageworks artistic director Jessy Mahr. “They help build con dence, improve academic outcomes, and bring people together. We want to be an integral part of that here in Culpeper.”
For years, Windmore has had to rely on makeshift venues – local churches, schools, and area businesses – to bring its productions to life. But thanks to the vision of the board of directors, led by President Amanda Reck, and a collaborative lease agreement with State Theater owner Jim Wells, Windmore now has a dedicated, professional space for its performances and events. The historic theater, known for its authenticity and charm, provides the perfect backdrop for Windmore’s vision of community-driven art.
As Windmore settles into its new home at the State Theatre, it’s clear that this is a pivotal moment for the Culpeper arts scene. With a diverse range of programs, a growing audience, and a renewed sense of purpose, Windmore is poised to make an even greater impact in the years ahead.
So, whether you’re an aspiring actor, artist, writer or musician, a dedicated volunteer, or a passionate supporter of the arts, now is the time to get involved. The stage is set, and Windmore is ready to welcome you.

While Zandra’s menu features classic tacos like birria and al pastor, diners can also nd innovative combinations like Szechuan pork belly with ash-fried Brussels sprouts, roasted cauli ower with black bean chili, and sesame seared tuna with furikake in a yuzu glaze.
Pires points to his team members as integral to the restaurant’s success. “Watching my team thrive and expand as part of Great Eats Hospitality is incredibly ful lling, as it allows me to see my vision grow through talented people who share my commitment to quality and service,” he said.
Pires also says that the hospitality group and associated restaurants are committed to serving the communities in which they operate. “As the owner, I love the blend of creativity, community impact, and business growth that comes with my role.” Pires said, “Beyond the food, I value building strong connections within the community, from loyal customers to local businesses and organizations.”

“Zandra’s isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a place where families, friends, and community members can come together to share a meal. We’re dedicated to not only serving great food but also building lasting relationships with our guests and contributing to the community,” Pires said. “We are very excited to nally be open in Culpeper and we are thankful for the warm welcome we have received from the community.
Cloverleaf Nook Ti any Crayton-Brown & Andi Snydstrup
A shared passion of well-being through individual journeys of health have led Master Herbalists Tiffany Crayton-Brown and Andi Snydstrup to open Downtown Culpeper’s very own natural wellness store, Cloverleaf Nook!
The idea was born in the now retired indoor vendor market, Dash of Treasure. There, Andi and Ti any began selling natural wellness and skin care products and eco-friendly gifts to the community. The venue ended, but their mission didn’t.
“The goal is to give people an easy way to find things that are healthier for them,” Ti any said. “Making these changes can feel intimidating, and we are here to make it easier.”
These ladies have carefully curated natural products, many locally sourced, that show their passion for the goodness nature can provide. They carry natural herbal teas and tinctures, cleaning products, perfumes, soaps and nourishing face and body care. These everyday items, made fresh and in small batches from US based small businesses make it easy to replace items manufactured with chemicals and preservatives. This can seem overwhelming, but Andi and Ti any are here to help, one product at time.
“The unfamiliarity makes it seem hard, but it’s just as easy to come
in and buy a headache tincture that really works as it is to buy an over the counter, mass-produced product. We want to make that make sense and build trust in a natural solution.
Two di erent journeys merge seamlessly to create Cloverleaf Nook. Ti any has a true passion for the natural skincare. She spent years looking to nd face and body products that would not irritate her skin, nding relief in well-made natural products. Andi and her son, Michael, embarked upon a journey to wellness of their own through nutrition. While Michael was battling Crohn’s Disease, they came to understand the powerful healing potential that taking a holistic approach could bring.
“We understand the ingredients that are in our products and how powerful they can be. We want to o er the same natural relief that we’ve bene ted from to our community.”
You can look forward to growing engagement within the community as Cloverleaf Nook will host classes to learn from seasoned herbalists, promote mediation and creativity with various crafts, and activities that will encourage holistic health, inside and out.
“Our goal is to improve the world around us, continue to learn, and teach what we are passionate about.”

Do you remember where The Ole Country Store was rst located in Culpeper? If you said down from the Antique Mall o 29 North, you’d be correct. What began in July of 2009 as a humble family operation has grown into a community focused staple, winning Best Deli in Culpeper six years in a row! Titus Helmuth, along with his sister Sue and her husband Al Esh, started the shop with a vision of providing the community with wholesome and comforting food.
“We had a slow start, but Culpeper embraced us,” said Titus.
The expansion and scope of what The Ole Country Store is today has exceeded everyone’s expectations. Having made an o er to the Lutheran Church for the lakeside lot once before, Titus and Al seized the opportunity when the church decided to sell. The space brought to life a unique opportunity to serve the community in a wholesome way. Not only did they get to expand their space to encompass a store front of wholesome bulk and homemade foods, but they partnered with the Town of Culpeper to o er paddle board and kayak rentals on the lake, making The Ole Country Store a local destination.
These days there are 45 employees on board, all kind and ready to assist you. Along with the selection of meticulously sourced high-
quality food from Mennonite and Amish makers, the store o ers breakfast and lunch daily with homemade hot meal specials MondayFriday. And, if you were wondering why their sandwiches were so good, it may be due to their full-time bread baker.
“We are known in Culpeper for our sandwiches; the bread is baked from scratch like Grandma used to make. We bake over 20,000 loaves a year!” You will also nd a vast homemade candy selection and freshly baked deserts.
Along with enthusiasm for providing good food, there is a strong passion for giving back to the community. For 5 years now, Ole Country Store has been providing Culpeper and Eastern View High School football teams with sandwiches for every away game. They also routinely furnish food for the Culpeper Senior Center.
“As Christians, we will go the second mile,” said Titus. It is not uncommon for employees to come together and pray for friends and family. If you need a prayer, let the team know and they will pray for you too.
So, come gather. Relax on the front porch, enjoy friends and eat a good meal.

MANAGEMENT TRAINING
True Star Leadership John Thalheimer
“How do we in uence others to perform better?”
This fundamental question is critical whether we are leading a business, a non-pro t organization, a corporate department, or a team.
Over the last ten years, John Thalheimer, CEO of True Star Leadership, has focused on helping leaders answer this question for their organization. Early on, John realized that if he could help leaders make better behavioral choices, they would be more successful. To do this, John created a simple but e ective performance management model that he uses to guide organizations and individuals to a higher level of performance.
True Star Leadership started in 2015 in Nashville, TN. After many years leading teams in corporate America, John recognized that the present method of preparing individual leaders was not working. Poor training was leading to poor decision-making.
“In corporate America, individual contributors or subject matter experts are often promoted to supervisor or manager. Sometimes, it works, but more often or not, this leads to failure. Leadership and Management are speci c skill sets that need to be developed properly.”
John’s leadership systems work by not only providing them with the knowledge and skill set they need to be successful but also working with them to set direction, create systems, and develop means of motivating their employees to reach their full potential. At times, John
theorizes that poor decisions come from a lack of energy, and he works with his executive coaching clients to nd ways to create selfmotivation, decrease stress, and enjoy the moment.
“One of my favorite statistics comes from the Gallup Organization. According to their work, seventy percent of an employee’s e ort comes directly from their supervisors. If I improve a manager’s e ectiveness, I can improve the outcomes for the whole organization.”
Part of being a great leader is knowing where you are heading. John loves providing strategic facilitation, whether helping a non-pro t with its strategic plan, getting a leadership team all headed in the same direction, or nding common ground between government agencies. The combination of proactive listening, systems thinking, and challenging others to reach higher gives John’s clients con dence that they are on the right track.
John, his wife Marla and their two dogs settled into the Town of Culpeper in 2024. At the same time, John released his latest book, The Ultimate Guide to HR, Checklist Edition, a companion piece to his highly-rated podcast, HR Stories, in which he and his cohost discuss the challenges facing small businesses and HR Professionals. While John continues to work with organizations throughout the United States, he is excited to work with businesses and nonpro ts in Culpeper and beyond so we can spend less time traveling and more time with his dogs and family.

Elkwood Stone & Mulch Jay & Angie Kent
When it comes to making your outdoor space a personalized oasis, Jay and Angie Kent of Elkwood Stone & Mulch know a few things. They bring with them over 30 years of experience and superior customer service that will help guide you, bringing your ideas to life!
This family-owned business started over ten years ago when Jay and Angie decided they should do more with the lot they had purchased for their waterproo ng business, K & K Foundation Sealing. The Kent’s property had previously housed a small nursery, and it wasn’t unusual for people to drive right up and see if they could buy anything.
“People would often pull in the yard thinking it might still be a nursery. As this continued, we decided that we should maybe sell them something. Jay looked over at me one night and said, ‘I am going to sell them stone and mulch.’”
By the next weekend the two were researching and meeting with vendors. They wanted to o er quality products and services while sourcing as locally as possible. What they created was a landscape supply yard that o ers unique products, one on one customer service and a seasoned product expertise
“Dealing with dirt, rock and gravel comes as second nature to me,” said Jay. “As is being able to explain to people how to go about doing their projects in the most e cient way. I knew I had an advantage
to really help people.”
Elkwood Stone & Mulch has been growing in the community ever since, having become a cornerstone for landscaping supplies and trusted referrals.
As the business grows, so does their dedication to giving back to the community. They have been engaged in sponsoring and donating to various organizations since the beginning, but Jay and Angie evolved their abilities to make a di erence when they established Operation Woosah – a project that gives back to those who have served our country, whether they are active duty or a Veteran, by creating an outdoor space where these members can relax and enjoy their surroundings. This may be a simple place to sit and watch the sunset, or a natural stone sidewalk if that is what they desire.
“They sacri ce, and some of them ultimately sacri ce, everything for our freedom. Operation Woosah is our way of saying thank you and giving them a space that they can enjoy.”
If you have thought about spicing up your outdoor areas, support a local business and see what Elkwood Stone & Mulch has to o er. Whether its gravel, boulders, pavers or mulch – they’ve got you covered.

State Farm Insurance Trish Hulsey
Today is the best day to start saving for your future and protecting what is most important to you – your family! Trish Hulsey, Culpeper State Farm Agency’s new proprietor, knows that when it comes to these things, nothing could be more important!
Trish comes to Culpeper from California, o ering a rich aptitude towards helping people. Originally from Ohio, she’s a third generation State Farm agent who has been around the industry her entire life, bringing with her over 20 years’ experience working in sales, leadership development and most recently State Farm claims leadership.
“It is in my DNA. I was born with both my grandfather and father being very active community agents. I worked in their o ce as a kid, sometimes stu ng mailers…. throughout all my years of experience I learned that my passion has always been for helping people.”
Trish Hulsey arrived in Culpeper to start her new journey on July 4th, 2024. She had come to love the landscape and people after visiting family in the area for the past eight years. When community State Farm leader, John Willet, decided to retire after 30 years’ service to Culpeper, Trish ceased an opportunity to administer the o ce building and retain the amazing team that had been assisting customers for over 25 years.
Since this transition, Trish has been breathing fresh life into State
Farm’s local legacy by expanding their services and enhancing the classic model of personal, face-to-face interactions. While insurance has always been on the table, customers can now be assisted in retirement planning and personalizing healthy nancial futures.
“My philosophy is to create a local place where people can come for help, where we simplify the process to make sure they are protected, while also helping them realize future nancial dreams, this philosophy was born out of truly wanting to make a di erence in people’s lives.”
Trish also brings with her a passion for engaging the community and volunteering her time. As an avid tennis player, she dared to share her ability with children while living in California during Covid. She developed her own tennis summer camp that led children to love the sport, to be engaged outside and to feel loved, seen, and encouraged. She is now inspiring Culpeper’s youth while volunteering with the local nonpro t, Girls on the Run!
If you are looking for a solid professional to help you secure your family in the case of any event, or to understand your future nancial potential, look no more. Trish and the State Farm team are opening doors for the community, and all are welcome!
“We are here to provide peace of mind.”
FARM
Mystic
Hill Farms Kathy Leader & David Chevalier
Sisters Liz Chevalier and Kathy Leader didn’t expect their retired parents to follow their dreams and buy a farm out in the Culpeper countryside. They also didn’t realize the joy that their father, a businessman, would get from watching the birth of his calves and foals as he visited. And, as time went on, the sisters couldn’t have anticipated how much that farm would hold their own families together, representing the heart of their heritage and futures.
Mystic Hill Farms was purchased in 1988 by David and Charlotte Caldwell. Originally named Hidden Hills, the farm had been modeled after the prior owner’s Arabian horses and cattle farm. David and Charlotte poured themselves into the land, renaming it Mystic Hill Farms and expanding its concept to include highly refined seed stock cattle.
Today, Mystic Hill is managed by Liz’s son, David Chevalier. David moved to the farm from Louisiana eight years ago on what was supposed to be a six-month stay to remodel some of the houses on the property. As one thing led to another, David found himself working with long-time employee, Fernando, farming and breeding cattle as well.
“I feel extremely blessed to walk in my grandfather’s footsteps,” said David. “Waking up everyday keeping his dream alive has turned me into a better man. It means preserving the soil, protecting the Virginia watershed, and trying to make our world a better, healthier place.”
Mystic Hill Farms o ers all-natural, grass fed and grain nished freezer beef straight from the farm. They raise registered Angus and provide high-quality genetics to cattle producers throughout the US. On any given day they may house 210 cows and around 50 heifers. And, on the rst Saturday of November each year, Mystic Hill Farms hosts their annual on-site cattle auction!
“The farm represents the legacy that embodies our family history and values,” said Liz. “It serves as a connection to our late parents, and a heritage that we want to pass down to our children and grandchildren. We believe Mystic Hill Farms plays a vital role in preserving local culture and identity.”
With Kathy living in Northern Virginia and having a background in nance and product management, taking over the business operations of the farm was a natural t. She and the family took a serious look at what they could do to enhance Mystic Hill with the goal of preserving it.
Celebrations at Mystic Hill Farms is the newest expansion of the farm, providing a beautiful place to host weddings and special events. They are currently booking out for 2025 and o er tours of the establishment.
“This farm has brought our family closer together. Even though we are spread out through Louisiana, South Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland, we listen to each other to try to form this farm. It is our heart,” said Kathy.
COMFORT FOOD
Culpeper Country Cookin’ Amanda Young
Amanda Young is bringing back the heart of Culpeper!
Country Cookin’ rst opened its doors at the Southgate Shopping Center in 1981, serving the community as a family bu et restaurant where you could get a great meal at a great price. For years it drew people in by providing a menu that we all loved – Country Fried Steaks, baked sweet potatoes, and warm rolls and whipped butter as good as a lemon with your sweet tea.
When forced to close in 2020 due to Covid it marked an end of an era, and the loss of a Culpeper icon.
Amanda was running a restaurant in Lansdown when asked her opinion of the old establishment, and if it would serve value by opening it up privately. Her response would spark new life for the restaurant, giving the community back a place that meant something to so many residents here.
“Country Cookin’ is the heart of Culpeper. Families have grown up in this place. I knew that if we could get it and make it the same, we would be bringing something important back to the community!”
The rst time Amanda stepped foot in Country Cookin’ she was only 4 years old. Having just moved back to Culpeper from North Carolina, the restaurant was embedded in her memory as a piece of home. So, keeping the family restaurant in people’s core memory
was important. The restaurant was opened privately in 2022, and Amanda was asked to join. Amanda quickly partnered in, realizing that she truly loved the business.
“After coming back, I spent the rst year observing where we could improve and what we could do di erently. Now that we are no longer a corporation, there’s freedom to bring so much more than we had before.”
While sticking true to traditional cuisine, Country Cookin’ is working towards o ering a wider variety of options. You can look forward to the addition of meatloaf, Pork BBQ sandwiches, and other items tailored to what customers have expressed a craving for.
Seniors and veterans will continue to be a priority here as Amanda focuses on community engagement. Country Cookin’ will now host Breakfast with Santa, participate in local toy drives, and you may even see the Sheri ’s department waiting on tables to raise funds! They are now a Dementia Friendly establishment, and welcome everyone. And, you can look for them in this year’s Culpeper Parade – they will be showing the community that Country Cookin’ is still here!
“It is important for the town to have that good feeling back. I believe in doing business with a kind heart, and my sta knows that anyone and everyone that walks through these doors is family.”

ELECTRIC COMPANY
Rappahannock Electric Cooperative Kevin Pories & Jacoby Lipscomb
“We strive to implement our core values every day – Caring, Integrity, Respect, and Service!”
When a severe storm hits and knocks out power lines, we appreciate the bright yellow trucks and REC linemen as they work hard to restore normalcy back into our neighborhoods. But on the day-to-day basis, nobody understands the inner workings of your electric service more that Kevin Pories, Senior Director of Operations and Construction, and Jacoby Lipscomb, Forester-Vegetation Management Coordinator of Rappahannock Electric Cooperative.
With approximately 63K members in the 6 counties served by the Culpeper o ce, and 15K in Culpeper town and county alone, these gentlemen stay busy ensuring the safety and e ciency of your power.
“I have been here for a little over 30 years,” said Kevin. “My prime responsibility is everything related to power reliability in the Culpeper region. I work with six line crews and a total of forty-three linemen. They serve everything from data centers, to schools, to large businesses and single-family homes – basically anybody that has power!”
Kevin and his crews regularly administer new-connects, upgrades, pole replacements and scout out areas to nd any issues with lines or equipment that may need servicing.
Jacoby oversees a team that services several core areas of the vegetation management program. They work within ve-year cycles,
targeting all areas of vegetation that will a ect the infrastructure. They are conducting hazard tree inspections and removals, administering herbicides, and Jacoby will oversee helicopter clearing when needed. They are also utilizing technology that understands the di erences in the chlorophyll within leaves to determine the health of a tree.
“We do anything needed to keep the right-of-way’s clear and accessible for the linemen,” Jacoby said. Through his line of work, Jacoby has been gifted with opportunities to witness the diverse terrains and communities in Culpeper County and beyond, observing sights that some lifelong residents have yet to see.
REC utilizes several advanced technologies to impact the reliability of your electric system. They are currently three years into a continual ve-year cycle of employing drones to oversee any structural threats or concerns. Helicopters are used annually to inspect transmission and sub-transmission lines, sending reports of any issues recorded. Recently, REC took advantage of utilizing satellite imagery to gain clear pictures of the entire distribution grid, ensuring a transparent look into all components of providing the highest quality service to co-op members.
At the heart of your power, the teams at REC work like a family. “In this line of work, you have to watch your co-workers back. It can be dangerous,” said Kevin. “Keeping the lights on is important to all of us and we go at it hard, giving you our best!”
COMMUNITY
Culpeper Chamber of Commerce Lead Culpeper
For the past 30 years, Lead Culpeper has been one of the most engaging and instrumental programs o ered by the Chamber of Commerce. It is a leadership development course that introduces participants to active leaders within the community and educates them in the opportunities and challenges within Culpeper’s economy.
Coordinated by Culpeper Chamber of Commerce President Amy Frazier, Lead Culpeper is growing each program year, evolving experiences and finding meaningful and diverse ways to add value. Each month participants tour Culpeper industries or engage businesses, like local non-pro ts, in a way that teaches how these establishments work within community.
“My goal every Lead Culpeper session is for everyone to have an ‘I had no idea!’ moment,” said Amy. “There are so many layers to our vibrant economy. I plan the days and put the program together, and each month I am there learning new things with everyone else.”
Lead Culpeper rst started in 1994 to identify and educate leaders within the community. It is a one-year leadership development program that takes place every other year. Participants meet up once a month to engage in fun, hands-on educational presentations that strengthen their understanding of how Culpeper works.
Town Councilman Joe Short participated in the 2024 class. After learning so much about the community he serves, Joe believes Lead Culpeper should be highly considered by anyone who wants to be involved in our local government.
Topics include Economic Development, Small Businesses, Agriculture, Art Culture & History Day and more. This year’s participants had the
opportunity to dive into public education by touring schools, riding on two di erent types of school buses and even eating school lunch with a presentation for the Director of School Nutrition.
“What has been wonderful about this program has been just really immersing myself in not just the now of Culpeper, but the past of Culpeper and seeing why we are the way we are. Every business that our class visited not only talked about themselves, but discussed how they are immersed within the community….I also want to be immersed in all parts of this community,” said Teresa Lough, owner of Wagner Hearing Aid of Culpeper.
Participants had an explosive time on Economic Development Day while touring and learning about the large industries in Culpeper, including Cedar Mountain Stone quarry. Participants wrapped up their insightful tour by having the unique opportunity to witness a blast rsthand!
If you are looking to learn more about how you can cultivate your leadership skills, expand your networking arena and grow your understanding of our diverse economic community, Lead Culpeper is a great place to start!
