An Inner Strength
Teen overcomes challenge to become Eagle Scout
BY TRACY BELL
With his strong faith in God, a Stafford County teenager with spina bifida didn’t let his condition set him back when he set out to become an Eagle Scout.
Instead, Thomas Gill, who turns 19 in October, earned the little-achieved rank –and also entered college this fall.
Gill graduated from Mountain View High School in the spring, and before doing so achieved his goal to become an Eagle Scout.
As part of his requirement to become an Eagle Scout, Gill led a service project to build rain barrels to supply water for a pollinator garden at Widewater State Park in Stafford.
“It feels surreal to have made it this far,” Gill said of becoming an Eagle Scout.
Fewer than 6 percent of Scouts earn the rank of Eagle Scout, according to the Boy Scouts of America, but Gill did so despite the added health challenge of spina bifida.
The neural-tube birth defect limits his physical abilities, although Gill can use forearm crutches to walk short distances.
Gill, who started studying at Germanna Community College this fall, has been a longtime member of Troop 850 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in the Aquia District –part of the National Capital Area Council.
He officially became an Eagle Scout just days before Christmas. Then, in the spring, he attended a celebratory ceremony and reception at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, where he was honored.
As his Eagle Scout project, with help from his father, Dennis, and other troop members, Gill successfully built a rain-barrel reclamation system at the state park to supply water to volunteers watering a pollinator garden and for park maintenance. They created stands for the rain barrels and retrofitted less expensive barrels to demonstrate thriftiness, one of Scouting’s values.
Gill also raised money for the project and implemented it within three months.
“Being in a wheelchair, I’ve had several bumps in the road that were close to
discouraging me,” he said. “However, I had great adult leaders that pushed me to my final lap, and I made it despite those challenges.”
Gill credited his faith in God for helping him get to and through this “major milestone” – becoming an Eagle Scout –after all, he said, “being reverent is one of the principal parts of being a scout.”
“He gave me the determination, spirit and drive to keep going no matter what obstacles I had during my journey,” Gill added.
The idea for the project came after Gill visited Widewater State Park to help clean and weed the park’s pollination garden. In talking with a park ranger there, Gill learned that the park’s visitor center would benefit from having rainwater collection barrels to water that same garden.
His father had also mentioned wanting to do something similar at their home.
Eagle Scout Thomas Gill graduated from Mountain View High School this spring.
Collaborating with his family, the park and his troop, Gill designed and put the project in motion.
“Though some hiccups came up, the project worked beautifully,” he said.
Dennis Gill said that while achieving Eagle Scout was especially challenging for his son, he never used his disability as an excuse, or let it stand in his way.
“The journey to Eagle built a tremendous amount of self-confidence and resilience in him,” Dennis Gill said, “and showed him that with some hard work and determination, he could conquer any obstacles…. His mother and I could not
be more proud of the young man he has become. Scouting was a big part of that.”
Gill began in Scouting as a Cub Scout in the second grade in Pack 845.
His mother, Elba, recalled that he was encouraged “always to do his best and never give up” by his Cub Scout leader, Joe Hernandez, who was also an active-duty Marine. The advice stuck, she said.
Gill said he felt comfortable from the start in Scouting. “They welcomed me without anyone asking what was wrong with my legs.”
On the road to becoming an Eagle Scout, Gill earned 21 merit badges, including disability awareness, nuclear science and his favorite – railroading. Gill also served as Troop 850’s historian and chaplain’s aide. During his time in Scouts, Gill participated with his troop in hikes, including a 10-miler at Gettysburg, Pa., and numerous camping trips.
“One of my favorite aspects of my scouting journey, no matter how much I cursed it at the time, was camping,” said Gill, explaining that sometimes the cold temperature was rough. “I got a lot of knowledge of how to survive in the wild and how to lead younger and older scouts in

various activities and skills. On top of this, camping in general was just very fun.”
Gill is now working on his associate’s degree in mechanical engineering at Germanna and hopes to later transfer to a four-year university.
“Being an Eagle – it had not set in until recently the gravity of this rank,” Gill said, “but I now understand just how important and helpful this milestone is for me now, and will be for me in the future.”

A Bridge to Success
Widewater park ranger transitioned from military career
Jonathan Knauth stood at the entrance to Stafford County’s Widewater State Park and gladly helped incoming patrons understand the available payment options before entering.
Once they passed through, Knauth turned and looked toward the park’s playground and picnic shelter areas and smiled. On a sunny September morning, he was doing exactly what he wanted to do and where he wanted to do it after 30 years in the Marine Corps.
Using his love of the outdoors that began while growing up in Florida and his public speaking skills developed during his time in the Marines, the 49-year-old Stafford resident is a park ranger at Widewater, a 1,089-acre property on a peninsula between Aquia Creek and the Potomac River.
Knauth received this opportunity through a Department of Defense program called SkillBridge. The program, started in 2011, helps active-duty servicemembers transition out of the military into a public or private job through training, internship and apprenticeship opportunities.
Knauth is one of four current Virginia park rangers who were SkillBridge interns.
“SkillBridge interns are typically very mature, responsible and possess a strong work ethic,” said Eric Hougland, professional development coordinator for Virginia State Parks, which operates Widewater. “Jonathan possesses these traits, plus he took initiative and was willing to learn what it means to be a state park ranger. He also has a passion for the outdoors and wants to share that passion with other people – our park guests.”
Knauth learned about SkillBridge after
hearing fellow Marines talk about it in the office one day while stationed in California about eight years ago. Watching some of his peers participate in it only piqued Knauth’s interest more.
Knowing he wanted to become a park ranger, Knauth prepared by returning to college in 2018 and taking 18 credit hours in environmental sciences courses. Before he had to retire from the Marine Corps in November 2023, Knauth began exploring the possibility of becoming a park ranger.
Because Widewater was the closest state park to his home, Knauth went there first and learned it offered internships through SkillBridge. He interviewed with Hougland and Nona Henderson, an organizational development consultant with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.
Knauth then interviewed with Widewater State Park manager Paul Anderson and Hougland. Everyone agreed he was a good fit.

He also praised the program’s partnership with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and the way it prepared him for a field in which he had no prior experience.

Meet the Man Behind Your
Favorite Ice Cream Shop
BY TRACY BELL | PHOTOS BY DOUG STROUD
Amemory, a hobby, a talent and even a craving set the stage for a retired military servicemember and his son to become unexpected ice-cream entrepreneurs.
Ed Wright, a Stafford County resident, owns Abner B’s Ice Cream, which opened two years ago at Embrey Mill Town Center. Wright focuses on general operations and the Stafford shop, while his son, Edward, runs their original brick-and-mortar shop on Caroline Street in Fredericksburg.
Abner B’s was voted Best Ice Cream Shop for the second successive year in this year’s Best of Staffod voting, conducted by Stafford Magazine.
“It was awesome” to be recognized, Wright said.
Wright’s history includes college at the University of South Carolina – he’s a
South Carolina native – and 22 years in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard as a communications officer. He retired as a lieutenant colonel.
So, where does ice cream fit in?
“I just kind of backed into it,” said Wright, recalling a fondness for ice cream as a child when he and his family made road trips to his grandparents’ house. They would always stop at a small soft-serve ice cream shop about halfway through their trips.
Not to mention, Wright has a sweet tooth. Cravings for really good ice cream and an interest in experimenting with new flavors also served as a catalyst for Wright to turn a hobby into something more. Plus, he needed a new focus after retiring.
Over the years, people who tasted Wright’s ice cream would encourage him to turn it into a business.
“One thing led to another,” said Wright, who attended Penn State University’s Ice Cream Short Course in 2012. “We started out manufacturing ice cream later that year and selling it from a truck at local farmers’ markets.”
In 2014, he was invited back to Penn State and has been an instructor at the course since. The Wrights opened the Fredericksburg location in 2019, followed by the Stafford store in 2022.
Wright first named his ice-cream company Abner Butterfield Ice Cream Co., after an old friend. At first, he sold his ice cream out of a truck that looked like a 27-foot purple cow.
His ice cream stores evolved to a shortened version of Abner Butterfield, each taking on the name Abner B’s Ice Cream. The stores serve hand-dipped homemade ice cream made daily, frozen yogurt, sorbet, sherberts, sundaes and
banana splits, among other treats and drinks.
Last year, the father-son duo made almost 21 tons of ice cream. Since opening their first store, they have made more than 450 flavors, with about 100 in regular rotation, plus seasonals and one-off special flavors. Each shop offers 24 flavors at a time, with many selected from customer and crew requests, Wright said. Asked to pick his favorite flavor, Wright said he can’t choose but does have a top 10 or 20.
“Coffee flavors tend to find their way in that list,” he said. “I’ve become a fan of salty caramel flavors, too, and the oatmeal crème pie flavors are amazing. My most recent go-to is probably butter crunch. Recommendation-wise, just come try them.”
Wright, who refers to himself as a “director of scoopology,” has a team of about 20 high-school and college-age employees who he calls “scoopers.” They’re “the real face of the business,” he explained.
“Most of them are in their first or second jobs so it’s a lot of fun and satisfaction helping them to transition into a work environment,” he said. “It’s a great crew and it’s a privilege to work with each and every one. They make my day.”
As for his son, Edward, who runs the Fredericksburg shop – which used to house Wally’s ice cream – his favorites are the cherry varieties. There’s cherry vanilla, cherry vanilla chocolate chip and cherry cookies and cream, with cherry lemon

topping his list.
Surrounded by ice cream, the fatherand-son team are happy to share a love of their favorite dessert with their customers.
In the ice cream business, Wright finds that generally he’s seeing customers at their best. After all, ice cream tends to put people in a happy mood.
“A lot of times, our guests are already celebrating when they come in,” Wright said. “We’re just the sprinkles on top.”

Meet Stafford’s new county administrator
BY TRACY BELL
After working for the town of Herndon for more than 25 years, Bill Ashton took on a new role in September as Stafford County’s new administrator.
His last day as Herndon’s town manager – his role for the past seven years – was Sept. 10. Six days later, he officially started his new job in Stafford.
“As with any life change of this magnitude, my emotions are mixed,” Ashton said upon leaving Herndon. “My family and I are excited about this new adventure, but I will also deeply miss Herndon.”
Ashton served under two mayors in Herndon, but will experience a change in population and size, as Stafford County is more than six times larger than Herndon, which is part of Fairfax County.
The Stafford County Board of Supervisors selected Ashton over the summer. He replaces interim County Administrator Craig Meadows, who temporarily ran operations after Randy Vosburg resigned after less than two years on the job.
Stafford County Supervisors’ Chair Meg Bohmke, who represents the Falmouth District, said the board is eager to collaborate with Ashton. His extensive educational background, professional experience and remarkable accomplishments perfectly align with the community’s vision, she said.
Before his job as town manager in Herndon, Ashton was director of information technology for Herndon, starting in 1997. He holds a master’s degree in public administration from George Mason University and a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
“His imprint on our operations will be felt long after his departure,” said
Ashton
Herndon Mayor Sheila Olem.
While there was a period of significant growth in Herndon, there were also challenges, including navigating government needs during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a news release from Herndon government.
In Stafford, Ashton’s job involves managing all of the county’s departments and overseeing county government's daily operations as he works with the board of supervisors.
“I am honored to serve as the next county administrator for Stafford County,” Ashton said. “My unwavering commitment to public service and a keen desire to make Stafford County an exceptional place to live and work drives my passion for this new role. I am excited to collaborate with the board of supervisors and the committed staff to fulfill the county's vision and meet the needs of our community.”

few years ago, on the anniversary of D-Day, I wrote an article about the invasion and all those who prayed in anticipation of the assault – not only the soldiers but also those who knew and cared for them back home.

It’s All Here – See Yourself Here
The article was a snapshot of what people were doing and thinking on an important day in our history. Along with their many obligations and worries, they still took time to pray. It’s something you don’t read about often, but it was a unique facet in the life of an America at war.

your conduct as a man, be an inspiration to your comrades and your country.”
However, there is more.
It says, “I take pleasure in commending the reading of the Bible to all who serve in the Armed Forces of the United States. Throughout the centuries, men of many faiths have found in the Sacred Book words of wisdom, council and inspiration.”
Like most articles, I wrote it, submitted it, was pleased it was published – and then went on to work on something else.
But she was persistent and finally, feeling just a little embarrassed, I accepted her gracious present.

But I soon found out that wasn’t the end of the story. A couple of weeks later, I received a call from an older woman who had read the article. I didn’t know her, but she was a local resident preparing to move into assisted living. To do that, she had to pare down her belongings and give some things away. She told me it was hard
The Bible is small, and on the front page, printed in a script typeface, is a message from Gen. John Pershing, the American commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in World War I. It was addressed “To the American Soldier.”
In his note, Pershing wrote, “Hardship will be your lot, but trust in God will give you comfort.” He then closed with, “Let your valor as a soldier, and
After all, the title of this column is a story of “two” Bibles. Just a week later, a friend who was moving home to Texas and had also read my D-Day article said he wanted to give me his uncle’s World War II Bible for safekeeping. This time I didn’t offer much resistance. For some unknown reason, I wasn’t even that surprised. It was a wonderful gift, and after being given the first Bible I wasn’t inclined to turn down the second. This Bible had seen some hard use and had been with his uncle during the Battle of the Bulge. This Bible had more of a
I am not going to be presumptuous and claim that there was a divine intent in my receiving these two gifts. But don’t think that notion hasn’t crossed my mind. I do believe there is a message in all this, and though I don’t know what it is, it does say a lot about prayer, our beliefs and just how deeply felt and treasured they are. I am grateful to both these kind individuals who trusted me with such dear possessions, and I have resolved to keep these Bibles safe and well cared for as long as I can.
