H E A LT H What is Lymphedema? ➤ What you need to know about the causes, symptoms and treatments Have you ever experienced swelling after an injury? Maybe you twisted your ankle and needed to elevate and ice it for a couple of days. The silver lining in most cases is knowing that swelling will be gone after a few days. For people with lymphedema, however, there isn’t a quick-fix solution and swelling is unlikely to dissipate without treatment. Lymphedema is a chronic disorder characterized by persistent swelling in the arms, legs, face, neck or trunk. Sherrie Beres, MOT/L is an occupational therapist at Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center Rehabilitation – Powell Wellness Center with over 16 years of experience working with a wide variety of patients. She is trained in Lymphedema and explains the causes and symptoms of lymphedema and discusses treatment options. Causes “Lymphedema results from a blockage or impaired flow of fluid within the lymphatic system, which is part of the immune system,” said Beres. “The lymphatic system helps keep us healthy by circulating

protein-rich lymph fluid through our lymph vessels to remove harmful substances. This fluid ultimately ends up in our lymph nodes, where infections are filtered out and flushed from the body. When lymph vessels are unable to drain that fluid adequately, lymphedema may occur.” For some, the condition is hereditary, but in most cases lymphedema is triggered by a disruption in the lymphatic system caused by removal of, or injury, to a lymph node or vessel. This can occur when cancer cells block lymph vessels, when radiation treatments result in scarring and inflammation of lymph nodes or vessels, and when lymph nodes are surgically removed. Symptoms Risk of developing lymphedema increases after lymph node removal or any type of cancer treatment but even people with no history of cancer can develop the condition, particularly those who are elderly, overweight, had injury to a limb, surgery of any type, or chronic venous insufficiency which is decreased circulation. For this reason, you are encouraged to see a doctor if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms: • Persistent swelling in all or part of an arm, leg, head, neck or the trunk of the body • Feelings of heaviness or tightness • Restricted range of motion • Aching or discomfort • Recurring infections

• Hardening or thickening of skin (fibrosis) “Although there is not a cure for lymphedema, visiting your doctor at the onset of symptoms can lead to quicker relief,” said Beres. “Even mild cases can cause discomfort and require therapy to manage pain, swelling, immobility, and prevent infections.” Treatments Once your doctor has evaluated your symptoms and confirmed that lymphedema is the cause, they will likely refer you to an occupational or physical therapist for a specialized type of therapy called manual lymph drainage. This treatment decreases swelling by improving the circulation of lymphatic fluid. Having a therapist trained in lymphedema apply specialized compression wraps or a compression sleeve can also help

prevent fluid buildup. “Incorporating very gentle exercises into your daily routine can also encourage lymph fluid drainage,” said Beres. “Your therapist can work with you to determine the best exercises. They shouldn’t be strenuous or cause fatigue, but even light exercise can make a world of difference in your everyday comfort.” Comprehensive rehabilitation services are available at Culpeper Medical Center, including specialty services such as oncology rehab, aquatics, LSVT treatment for people with Parkinson’s disease and treatment for dizziness and concussion. Culpeper Medical Center receives ‘A’ Leapfrog hospital safety grade Culpeper Medical Center, a Novant Health UVA Health System facility, was awarded an ‘A’ grade The Leapfrog Group’s spring 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. The designation recognizes the medical center’s efforts in protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care. The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization committed to improving healthcare quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care. In 2006 with retirement on the horizon and after extensive research for an area that would meet their requirements, Lou Realmuto and his wife moved to Culpeper. One of their requirements was to find a location that had the charm of a small town with the amenities of a big city. After visiting Main Street and Davis Street and driving around the beautiful countryside, it was obvious that Culpeper met all that they had hoped for and more. One of Lou’s requirements was to be in an area that would enable him to get back into his hobby and love of classic cars which he enjoyed at an early age back in Brooklyn, New York. So, after they settled in and with retirement now just around the corner, in 2008 he purchased a 1953 MGTD Kit Car and began going to events both locally and around Northern Virginia. Rather than officially joining a club or organization, he found that with so many opportunities to go to car shows and cruise-ins to meet people within the classic car culture with similar interests, membership wasn’t necessary. Riley Reynolds Cameron Easter That’s when he met Chuck Shotwell from nearby Stafford who along with several of his friends had a group that weren’t a club or official organization but simply a bunch of guys who had a love of country, classic cars and wanted to help preserve the classic car hobby while supporting our military and various charities. It was exactly what Lou was looking for and their close friendship began. displays in Bealeton and Amissville, an assisted living open house display in Spotsylvania as well as participating in a Lake of the Woods 4th of July parade and CulpeperFest. They currently have over 50 registered volunteers who enjoy displaying and speaking with people about their special ride. In addition, with the help and support of local and area sponsors and business partners including Ed’s Awards & Engraving, Chrysler of Culpeper, Brusters, PDM Motorworks, Braggs Corner Properties, LLC and The Culpeper Times, they have been able to achieve their expectations and more. By 2016 the good news was that Cruisin For Heroes had become a great success and was known throughout central and northern Virginia as a group who provided family friendly vehicle displays at various types of community and charity events….the challenge was that their team was not growing at the same pace as their success. Therefore, they had to make the difficult decision to cut back and reduce the number of events each year to maintain the quality expected. Then in 2017 Cruisin For Heroes was at a crossroads when for various reasons they were back to only a handful of members and their founder had retired from the group. With the remaining four members and a list of almost 50 volunteers, Lou and the remaining team decided they still wanted to continue for as long as possible maintaining a significantly reduced schedule and engaging in more collaborative events with clubs and organization versus solely Cruisin For Heroes events. Their 2019 schedule includes three of their signature events, the monthly Cruise-In at Brusters on the 4th Saturday of the month from May through August, the Airshow on Oct.12 and their Toys4Tots Run on Dec. 14. They collaborated already on two events supporting an April Rolling Thunder Car Show in Springfield and an Open House event earlier this month at PDM Motorworks here in Culpeper. They are also booked in September for a Fisher House fundraiser/silent auction in Fredericksburg and will be supporting several area cruise-ins. Over the past 13 years Lou and his wife have met many great people in the area, they love Culpeper and he now has his fourth car a 1946 Ford Convertible. Attending a Cruisin For Heroes event is a great opportunity to enjoy viewing some classic vehicles while supporting the Fisher House Foundation as well as other charities and community causes. This Saturday will be their first of four monthly cruise-ins at Brusters here in Culpeper from 4 to 7 p.m.

A pair of cats with local ties are getting national attention for their paw performances. Culpeper native Ashley Mullins, a longtime Culpeper Times columnist, entered her two cats Revan and Ripley - into a competition that has not only resulted in multiple cute cat videos, but contributes to a noble cause. The Cat Pawsitive National High-Five Day Contest is sponsored by Jackson Galaxy, a cat behaviorist with a television show, and his Project’s Cat Pawsitive program, GreaterGood.org. The Cat Pawsitive National High-Five Day Contest is a competition between cats and their high-fiving abilities, which goes to show that dogs aren’t the only pets that can learn impressive tricks. Participants must submit a video of their cats high-fiving, and the top three winners win a cash grant to go towards a shelter or rescue. Third place wins a $2,000 cash grant, second place a $3,000 cash grant, and first place a whopping $5,000 cash grant, as well as a trip to Los Angeles to meet Jackson Galaxy and his cat Lil BUB. Mullins, the daughter of Dave and Judy Mullins, of Culpeper, is competing for this grant to donate to “King Street Cats,” a cat-specific rescue in Alexandria where her friend Porter volunteers. She is passionate about cat charities, and after learning DOCTORS URGENT CAREthe contest through Porter, about Mullins decided to give it a try. PRevan can practically call Culpeper his home at this point, after spending so much time here with her “cat grandparents” during Mullin’s trip on the Appalachian Trail in 2015. After learning about Revan’s love for blueberries, Mullins discovered how easily she could train her cat to do tricks. Once it came to preparing for the contest, training was a breeze. Mullins describes her experience training Revan and Ripley, clearly proud of her cats for learning impressive tricks. “I will admit but also it was super easy to train especially Revan to do multiple tricks,” she said. He was a well-trained cat before learning high-fives for the contest, and mastered tricks such as meow-ing on command and “pound-it,” which is like a fist bump. Ripley was not as easy to train,

Revan, owned by Culpeper native Ashley Mullins, and his cat sister Ripley are finalists in the Cat Pawsitive National High-Five Day Contest through GreaterGood.org. but Mullins said, “just like with dogs, some are smarter than others, some aren't.” However, Revan is certainly among the smart ones. After learning these tricks, high-fives were no trouble for Revan. “Pound it was his trick, and high-five was kind of like another variation of pound it,” Mullins said. “We trained him to do highfive in about an afternoon and he's pretty good at it.” Mullins crafted a video to be proud of. “We spent about two weeks brainstorming about how we want to do our video,” she said. The creative resulting video incorporates multiple tricks in addition to high-fiving. After submitting the video, Mullin’s cats were selected to be in the finalist round – a group of 25 out of all those that were submitted. Mullins is confident that her cats are winning-material. “I think if it was based on the quality of the tricks in the video yes hands down I think our video is the best,” Mullins said. “But we just need people to go and vote for it being the best.” In order to win, the cats’ video must be voted into the top three online. To vote for the skillful Revan and Ripley – and also watch their cute video – you can visit the Shelter Challenge website and click on the Cat Pawsitive National High-Five Day Contest. First Senior Walk makes impact on elementary students By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer

Seniors from EVHS and Culpeper County High School visited the six elementary schools in Culpeper County prior to graduation. “It just shows they are working toward something, it’s working toward a goal,” Brown said. “It just feels like you’re done with your first part and now you’re moving on to real life and doing your own thing.” Shaun Summerscales, assistant principal at EVHS, slapped hands with many of the youngsters as they lined the halls - waving banners and posters with encouraging words for the seniors. “It’s one of those things an elementary kid will remember until the moment they get to do it

themselves,” Summerscales said. “For a kid that may have the chips stacked against them, seeing something like this may help put themselves in that role.” It was a total buy in by the senior class, he said. Three hundred of the 318 EVHS seniors participated in the walk. “They were excited to come back and see their old school, their teachers and all the excited faces cheering them on,” Summerscales said. “They chose to take part of this, I think it just goes to show what a special idea this was.”

“You did it,” one elementary student yelled, as Eastern View High School’s Class of 2019 walked through A.G. Richardson Elementary School Thursday afternoon. The inaugural senior walk, the brainchild of EVHS counselor Jillian Smith, had seniors from both EVHS and Culpeper County High School marching through the halls of the six county elementary schools as young students cheered them on. EVHS visited A.G., Sycamore Park and Farmington elementary schools while CCHS visited Emerald Hill, Sycamore Park and Yowell elementary schools. Alix Tate, school counselor at Sycamore Park Elementary School, said everyone at the school was thrilled to have the seniors come through. “The kids are excited and the staff is excited because many of them had them (the seniors),” Tate said. “Some of our staff has been here for 20-plus years. When I went in to explain it to the kids, they were so excited. I think the little kids, the big kids and the

adults are just so excited.” Over at A.G. Richardson, principal Sue Bridges wiped away tears as a steady stream of students hugged it. “It’s emotional,” she said. “Just seeing that they made it. They worked hard, they’re going on to bigger and better things.” Bridges, the longtime principal at A.G., said she is constantly amazed at how grown up the seniors look. “At least a dozen, for those I recognize, there’s so many that I don’t recognize because they all changed,” Bridges said. “When they left they were shoulder height and now they’re all taller than me.” Zach Brown, a senior at EVHS who will be attending Virginia Military Institute in the fall, said it was nice to come back and tour their old elementary schools. “I feel like it’s a fun experience for both sides,” Brown said. “They get to get out of class for a few minutes and they get to see what it’s in store for them for the future.” Brown said he wishes he had something like this when he was in elementary school.

Johnson announces candidacy for sheriff ➤ Longtime law enforcement officer ran for office in four-way race in 2015 By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Longtime law enforcement officer CJ Johnson announced his candidacy for sheriff of Culpeper County Wednesday evening at Raven’s Nest Coffee Shop. Johnson, who ran against current Sheriff Scott Jenkins in 2015, was supported by an eclectic group - Republicans, Democrats and Independents all turned out for his announcement. After losing in a four-person race in 2015 - along with candidates Mike Grant and Pat Coffey - why run again? “I still think there’s a lot of change that needs to happen in Culpeper,” Johnson said. “My overall consensus from citizens is that they aren’t happy with the current administration. I feel like I have a lot to offer.” One of the lessons learned from his last foray into politics - don’t run in a multi-person race. “Honestly, don’t get involved in a race with too many people,” Johnson said with a laugh. “I did learn a lot through the process about campaigning. Campaigning is like a business, you need help. Last time I tried to do too much myself, this time I have a great team supporting me.” Johnson said that community issues such as the opioid crisis, transparency within the sheriff ’s department, jail overcrowding and public perception of the organization are some of his key reasons for running. Johnson, currently employed by the Orange Police Department, pointed to community policing in North Carolina that has been a success as far as the opioid epidemic is concerned.

CJ Johnson announced his candidacy for Culpeper County Sheriff last Wednesday at Raven's Nest Coffee House in Culpeper. “We need to try different things as far as the opioid crisis is concerned,” Johnson said. “There’s been some success in other communities that the community policing approach has been very successful for them. The county recently had a big drug bust that was initiated through a patrol officer. When you get to know the community and interacting with them things like that happen.” He also said that if elected, he would push for body worn cameras for the deputies. “We need transparency within the office,” Johnson said. “Part of that is getting body worn cameras for the officers, earning the trust and respect of this community.” One of the biggest controversies that has faced the sheriff ’s office in recent years is the signing of the 287(g) policy with ICE. The program has led to lawsuits by the ACLU and the Legal Aid Justice Center.

CPD honors lifesavers with awards ➤ Slaughter receives Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police Life Saver Award for hospital incident By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer It was just one incident - but it’s a microcosm of what a law enforcement officer should be. On the night of May 23, 2018, Culpeper Town Police Officers were called to the Novant Health UVA Health Center Culpeper Medical Center helipad for the report of a man with a shotgun to his head, threatening suicide. Upon arrival, officers found the man

standing with a shotgun in his mouth - that’s when Officer John Slaughter went into action. Years ago, Slaughter had a man commit suicide in front of him with a different agency and he wasn’t about to let it happen again. He calmly and quickly established a dialogue with the suicidal man, putting himself out in the open and in harm's way. For more than 30 minutes, Slaughter talked to the man in an attempt to get him to drop the weapon - setting up Sgt. Luke Altman to take a shot with a less-lethal shotgun that disabled the suicidal man and ended the harrowing standoff. Slaughter was honored with the Virginia Association of Chiefs Police Life Saver Award May 15 at the Culpeper Town Police’s 2019 Life Saver Award Ceremony, while Altman also was recognized by Culpeper Chief Chris ➤ See Lifesavers, Page 8

Germanna Community College Chief of Police Craig Branch pointed out how unique the situation must be for Slaughter to have earned the prestigious award. “It’s an award that gets a lot of submissions,” Branch said. “It has to be a really tough situation to get awarded because of the numerous amounts of situations.” Jeff Hetmanski, President and CEO of Novant Health UVA Health Center Culpeper Medical Center, personally thanked Slaughter for his actions that night, pointing out he didn’t get a chance to thank him until now. “It’s truly impressive to hear about the remarkable contributions and some truly inspiring individual efforts,” Hetmanski said. “When I go home at night at hospital, I don’t get to lock my business. My emergency department is open 24-7. Nearly a year ago to the day, I received a phone call that no hospital administrator wants to receive. I was informed Culpeper law enforcement that there was an individual standing on my helipad with a shotgun, threatening to shoot himself. Knowing that I’ve got no less than 200 individuals that I’m directly responsible for, many of those patients,

Invoking Rasmussen’s now familiar phrase, “put the keys on the table,” Jenkins praised him for his work in suicidice prevention and opioid abuse. Rasmussen has been at the front lines for more than a decade, working with community coalitions and teaching life saving measures for both epidemics. “I know this stuff goes on with the police department, but to be here to-

night and hear all that goes on, and everything the law enforcement officers do in the area that I serve and I live - it blows my mind,” Rasmussen said. “It makes me feel safe and I admire the leadership and the people working the front lines.” Rasmussen, as he’s always quick to do, pointed the spotlight at the coalitions - The Living the Dream Foundation, the Rusty Bowers Suicide Prevention Coaltion, Sex, Drugs and God, Come As You Are, Culpeper Overdose Awareness and many others. “I’m one person and this prevention work, I know from experience, you do not get anything done unless you partner with individuals and organizations,” Rasmussen said. “I am representative of all the people I work with in all the organizations I deal with.”

Despite the ravages the war had visited upon the area, Whitman described Culpeper as “one of the pleasantest towns in Virginia.” As part of the Library of Congress’s series of events commemorating the Whitman bicentenary, local historian Bud Hall will present a talk about Whitman’s time in the area, followed by a screening of “Shenandoah.” Though morally opposed to slavery, he struggles to

Everyone is encouraged to join the staff at Culpeper National Cemetery in helping honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for this Nation. Placement of flags will begin at 8 a.m. on the historic side of the cemetery and continue until every gravesite is decorated with an American flag. The English poet John Maxwell Edmonds is credited with the authorship of this famous inscription that nobly defines the lost dreams of any fallen warrior: “When you go home, tell them of us and say … For their tomorrow, we

gave our today.” His verse is thought to have been inspired by the epitaph written by the Greek poet Simonides of Ceos, which honored the Spartans who fell at the Battle of Thermopylae. The greatest fear of anyone who serves or has served in the armed forces is that their fallen comrades will be forgotten. A close friend, high school classmate and combat veteran recently told me how he honors his fellow paratroopers who did not make it home. “Twice a year, a few of my paratroopers and I meet at Arlington Cemetery for our walks,” said Noel Rivera, a retired Army master sergeant and combat veteran of the Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. “One quote that we reflect on says, when we forget to tell their stories, we forget their faces!” So how do we properly honor, remember and salute all our nation’s fallen servicemen and women on Memorial Day weekend? We remember their names and stories. Between the cookouts we should all take a walk among the white stones of a national cemetery—like the one here in Culpeper. Perhaps we can attend a Memorial Day ceremony or recount the stories of those who have fallen in defense of our nation in an unbroken line from the Revolutionary War until today. Each gravestone and each memorial

Equality does not always equal fairness The Democrat-controlled House passed the Equality Act Friday, May 17 with unanimous support from Democrat members. Our District 7 representative, Abigail Spanberger, voted for it.

tell a story. When did this soldier fall? In what war did this sailor fight? Did they fall on a battlefield or did they die of old age? My brother Owen, a uniforms curator at the National Museum of the United States Marine Corps once told me his thoughts regarding Memorial Day. His daily work focuses on preserving, studying and displaying countless museum artifacts associated with Marine Corps history. He tells me that when he speaks to combat veterans, past and present, the survivors carry a heavy burden. World War II Marine veterans have stared into his eyes and said, “Memorial Day is not for those who served or serve. It is for the 19-year-old hero who sacrificed an entire lifetime for their comrades and nation. We remember all the ones who fought to protect fellow Marines.” The ceremonies regardless of scale or location should be attended. I have memories in my lifetime that hit home when it comes to honoring the fallen. I grew up in a military family. I remember friends losing fathers in Vietnam. I remember losing a friend in a training accident during my own military service. I remember attending the service for another friend’s sister who died in the Pentagon during the 9-11 terror attacks. As a journalist I recall another memory that still brings out my emotions. In 2011 I wrote feature on a benefit hunt for Families of the Wounded held at Rose Hill Game Preserve. It was an hour after sunrise. Hunters had gathered for a cup of coffee as they smiled at an energetic four-year-old girl named Bella who pin-balled her way through the room giggling and snagging the occasional pastry. On the mantle of a fireplace a row of photographs provided an intimate glimpse into the life of a loving family where the same little girl was obviously the center of a young couple’s world.

Were it to become law, women’s sports would be required to include biological males. As has already happened in high school women’s track championships, the biological males won and they always will. Educational opportunities for women through sports scholarships would be eliminated by a law with the word “equality” in its name.

There was a photo of a shampoomohawk crafted with her daddy’s loving hands. Another large photo showed a little girl tightly holding her Marine father’s hand one last time before his deployment to Afghanistan. The Marine in the set of photos was 1st Lt. Jason D. Mann, 29, of Stafford County, who served with the 6th Marines, 24th Marine Expeditionary Force. He was killed when the roof of a building collapsed on him during a mission in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. In the Marine Corps, he was an Arab linguist and a reconnaissance officer. I learned later that three close friends served with him in language school. The beautiful family in the photos were Jason, his wife and then two-yearold daughter, Isabella. The little girl previously referred to as Bella. I think about Second Lt. Leonard M. Cowherd Jr., 23, of Culpeper, who was killed in Iraq in 2004 as I cross the bridge named in his honor at Yowell Meadow Park. I think about Private Edward Jackson, of Culpeper, who died in Dijon during World War I. He was listed as a colored soldier. He served in the 341st Quartermaster Labor Battalion. He died in 1918. To this day Jackson rests in Plot A Row 16 Grave 6, in the St. Mihiel (American Cemetery), in Thiaucourt, France. I still want to find the rest of his story. I felt that I should not leave Private Jackson behind—even if it’s just remembering his service and sacrifice. Any and all leads will still be greatly appreciated from his hometown. Essentially, what I want to stress is the hope that our world has not become so distracted that we forget the names, faces and stories of the men and women who gave all in service to our nation this weekend. Memorial Day should also be a warning that a decision to go to war carries great cost.

This is not equality, nor is it fair. A proposed law with a wholesome-sounding name might do what it advertises. But it might not. We must think about the wide range of possible consequences, intended or unintended. Nancy J. Rice Culpeper
