LOCAL NEWS Memorial Day honors those that gave the ultimate sacrifice By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer War is far from perfect. It’s blood, sweat, tears and months - sometimes years - of sacrifice. It’s time away from families, it’s children being born while their father is overseas, it’s knock on the door no one wants to receive. The ultimate sacrifice - the one that American commemorated Monday with Memorial Day - is a testament to the perfect imperfection of our bond to our soldiers said Dr. Sherry Crissman, EdD USMC/USN Veteran, who was the keynote speaker at the Culpeper National Cemetery Memorial Day Service. Crissman spoke about perfection and how the quest to achieve perfection can sometimes cause more harm than good. “What is perfection? Is it achievable? Is it a concept,” she asked. “To me it means ideal. I’m pretty sure our nation was founded on the very principle for the people that we are honoring here today that the idea of perfect ideals being different being OK. Perfect can be the enemy of getting good done. "Not being able to recognize when good is OK and being willing to move forward with determination when you’ve achieved good enough can be a stifling grip on an organization, on a family, on a nation.” She told a story of her husband Dave, and his quest to find the perfect air conditioner after theirs broke on a hot July Florida afternoon. He courted many HVAC professionals, grilling them with what she jokingly called the “HVAC Inquisition.” She relayed Vince Lom-

But if we chase perfection, we can chase excellence.” She noted they found maybe not the perfect air conditioner, but an excellent one. It’s a theme that carries over to our nation, she said. “When it comes to our nation’s core values, for the brave men and women who proceeded us, it was about bravely taking risks, taking risks when faced with imperfect options, not waiting around for the no risk, no fail solution,” Crissman said. “For many of them it was about facing possible, but not probable failure and facing it

with honor and courage and conviction. It was about taking that chance. Being brave enough to fail was what they were all about.” On Memorial Day, the Culpeper National Cemetery was one of 136 national cemeteries in the U.wS. that honored veterans that are buried on the hallowed grounds. “Today is about honoring the men and women who served many giving their very lives for what they believed in, their life and death was not failure but what an ultimate victory was based on,” Crissman said. “It’s about honoring how they handled themselves. Their actions, their services, their

sacrifice, was perfect in its imperfection.” Matthew Priest, Culpeper National Cemetery Director, thanked the crowd of more than 500 people to turning out to keep the memories of our fallen soldiers alive. “It is said we die two deaths, the first when breath leaves our body for the last time,” Priest said. “The second the last time someone speaks our name or tells your story. It’s the second death the NCA is fighting to make sure never happens. It is essential we preserve our history and share it with future generations to make sure we never forget.”

The Foundation established the Healthy Living Grants program in 2015 to support local organizations in their work to improve health and wellness. Shari Landry, Foundation president, said, “Our award this year totaled $120,309, up from $100,000 in 2018. We’re pleased that we were able to direct more to these community efforts.” Laura Grigsby, chair of the Foundation’s advisory committee that reviews the Healthy Living grant applications, commented, “Discussion during review of the grants by the advisory committee was very spirited and lively given that applications represented 32 very worthy projects. It was a tough decision narrowing down the field. The scope of the proposals indicates that there is a lot of good work being done to support health and wellness in Madison, Orange and Culpeper.”

Small Business Development Center hosts seminar

Lily Haught

The Small Business Development Center at Culpeper announces that Courtney Mustin, Business Services Manager for Central Virginia, with the Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity (SBSD) will present a seminar on “Selling to the Commonwealth” in the Conference Room at its office at 803 South Main Street Culpeper. The seminar will be presented from 9 to 11 a.m. on June 12. There is no charge for the seminar but the seating is limited. eVA is Virginia's online, electronic procurement system. This web-based vendor registration and purchasing system allows state agencies, colleges, universities and many local governments to use eVA to conduct all purchasing and sourcing activities for goods and services. Last year, the Commonwealth of Virginia spent more than $6 Billion on goods and services. Goods and services that you probably sell! For every $100 the Commonwealth spent on goods and services, $37, went to a SWaM vendor. Are you getting your share? This free seminar will help you position your firm to capitalize on this enormous market. The seminar will teach you how to best identify your target audience across all state agencies in the Commonwealth of Virginia. You will also learn about the ease of having your business become SWaM and Micro certified and how this can impact your firm’s sales. After the presentation, attendees who wish to become certified to conduct business with the Commonwealth, will have the opportunity to meet one-onone with Courtney Mustin. The hour long One-on-one sessions are filled on a first come, first serve basis. Registration is required as seating is limited. Registration can be made on –line at www.lfsbdc.org on the Workshops/ Events dropdown or contact David Reardon at 540-727-0638 email: dreardon@lfcc.edu to Reserve your seat.

There was 3D art, found art projects, bird feeders that were painted by students and artwork that tied into the classwork they were doing in the school. One project revolved around the young adult novel “Orbiting Jupiter,” and students created their own personal representations of the emotion reflected in the book with a heart plaque. Phoenix staff got into the mindfulness act as well, working Willow Circle Art and Sara Bywaters-Baldwin to create individual puzzle pieces. Working with the hands-on projects helped connect both staff and students to the work they were doing in the classroom. “What we’re trying to do is we’re trying to add projects that are more hands on, because kids are on the computer a lot,” Dawson said. “Sometimes stepping away from the computer, and doing things with your hands can really emphasize the subject you’re trying to learn.” Jodi Place, coordinator of alternative education for Culpeper County Public Schools, encouraged students and praised them for their unique artwork - from accidental art to watercolor self portraits. “It’s just profound for me, this is my greatest hope realized,” Place ➤ See Phoenix, Page 8

YoungLives 'Mom Prom' makes memories ➤ 'Mom Prom' celebrated teen mothers and their growth and the connections they've made By Claudia Gohn Culpeper Times Intern Culpeper County Younglives held a “Mom Prom” on Thursday, May 16 at the Culpeper Presbyterian Church as a way to celebrate teen mothers and their growth. YoungLives is a nationwide organization as a part of YoungLife, whose mission is to help adolescents grow in their faith. In particular, YoungLives helps pregnant teens and teen mothers strengthen their relationship with God. Thanks to YoungLives, teen mothers in Culpeper have the opportunity to meet with each other every Thursday to build relationships and learn about the Christian faith. The current coordinator for Culpeper YoungLives is Amy Lukachick, who has participated in Culpeper YoungLives since its inception five years ago as a mentor. Lukachik is passionate about the organization and how it can have a positive impact on the young women. “I think the impact is just that they have, even if it's just like that one face in their life that is positive and encouraging them and empowering them and supporting them and loving them no matter what” Lukachik said. Lukachik also helped put together the Mom Prom that took place a few weeks ago. All of the participants of YoungLives in Culpeper were able to attend, including the pregnant teens and teen mothers, their kids, and the mentors in the program. At the Mom Prom, they were all able to dance, laugh, and have fun. According to Lukachik, the Mom Prom gave teen mothers and their children the opportunity to make memories together. “I wanted part of the Mom Prom to be just them making memories with their little ones. And little ones making memories with their moms,” Lukachik said. She also talked about how the prom allowed the women to celebrate the teen mothers, especially the ones who were graduating. “Then the other part of Mom

Culpeper YoungLives, part of Culpeper YoungLife, hosted a Mom Prom May 16 at the Culpeper Presbyterian Church. Prom I wanted to just recognize them,” she said, “recognizing just just how much they've grown in just the year we've been together with them.” The Mom Prom is only one example of the fun activities that YoungLives organizes for the mothers. Every Thursday throughout the year, the teen moms gather to play different games. One mother and member of YoungLives, Cynthia Gomez, a recent graduate from Eastern View High School, talked about how much she likes these weekly meetings and activities. In fact, one of her favorite memories was pieing Lukachik and another YoungLives leader in the face. Gomez also talked about her experience at the Mom Prom. Although she did not attend her high school prom, she enjoyed the Mom Prom and spoke highly of the dance. She said she was able to have fun especially because her child, Emily, was there with her. “It was fun that she was she got to be there and she got to dance,” Gomez said. Going to the Mom Prom - and YoungLives club nights in general - was also a special experience for Gomez because she rarely goes out, again because she takes care of her child. “I usually don't go out so this was fun for me to go out for the first time and party and have fun

with my friends,” said Gomez. Other aspects that make YoungLives unique were present at the Mom Prom. Lukachick says that YoungLives stresses the importance of self love, and to highlight that at the Mom Prom, the teens were given tiaras to wear. “I talked about how they're all daughters of the king, so they're all valuable and they have so much worth in themselves and that they have a purpose that not just to look nice for guys or to impress other people but there's,

you know, so much more to them,” Lukachik said. Despite the success of the Mom Prom, it is uncertain whether there will be another one next year. “I think we could do some type of, maybe not a Mom Prom every year, but some type of - just some type of celebration to surprise the teen moms,” Lukachik said. Nevertheless, the Mom Prom left an impact that is not left unseen, and it is clear that YoungLives will continue to touch the lives of teen mothers in Culpeper.

HISTORY A story from some years ago ZANN’S PLACE

Summer on the farm has always been full of mystery and adventure for me, though there are those who would claim that my idea of adventure is pretty humdrum by currentday cinematic standards. But who cares, adventure is in the heart of the participant. Please, read on to experience the thrills and chills of a day in my life on the farm. First, I must explain about my dog, Buddy. He becomes an absolute basket case when the thunder starts to roll and lately there have been not one but two storms per day. They used to tell us that thunder was just the angels bowling, ha! The thunder of late isn’t the work of angels it is the entire NFL fighting the owners for more money. When Buddy gets upset he begins to chew; we are talking shoes, towels and an occasional door if it will get him inside the house. He has even been known to get inside my car, but that is another story. The point is that I plan my day around the storms; to ensure proper residential management, I must be home. Lately, I have been staying at home quite a lot. I write, garden, mow the lawn, create new plant beds, attend to long-overdue repairs, bushhog the pastures, pay bills and when the mood strikes me I tackle a room filled with 40 years of accumulated

Zann Nelson

clutter. Thank you, Buddy, after 43 years I finally discarded those oh, so special prom dresses. Sounds pretty mundane, I know, but I haven’t told you of the cool and quiet mornings about 5 am or the rose-colored air at dusk. During these incredibly peaceful periods, if one blends with the landscape they share, the adventure begins. I have seen turkey, bear, eagles, hawks, fox and too many groundhogs. As humans, we tend to take an undeserved pride in our scientific and engineering accomplishments. Watch a beaver take down a tree or build a dam, gaze on a flock of geese landing on water-wheels down, reversing engines. We are not the first with such achievements; it is both humbling and inspiring. But on to a few more tangible gifts of summer those delicious, nutritious, wild and organically-grown berries. Each year is a little different depending on the rain, temperatures and other foragers. As long as I can remember, picking blackberries was a staple of summer activity. We worked hard to keep the fields and fence lines clear, but could often find those juicy delights along the creeks. Ah, yes, there is the occasional critter and I never pick without a dog along. Buddy likes to go, but he is not as into it as some of his predecessors. For years I was blessed with the most loyal little Llewellyn setter who loved nothing more than to hunt. The entire time I was picking, she was hunting and was very, very good at it. If there was anything else alive out there it was gone or otherwise occupied by the time I

reached the spot. Then there was Petunia, a stray I agreed to keep temporarily for a friend. Petunia knew immediately upon arrival that she was home and gave us 12 years of companionship and amusement. Petunia was always eager to go blackberry picking for one reason; she was rather fond of eating them herself. She was a small dog, so I left the berries on the lower branches for her consumption. There was one incident where she placed our relationship in serious jeopardy. I had discovered a tiny batch of wineberries, sometimes mistaken for red raspberries. I did not want to mix them with the bucket of blackberries so I placed the delicacies in a Dixie cup. I spotted a few more requiring both hands to wade into the thicket. Upon my

return moments later, I discovered Petunia had devoured all the berries from the cup I had set on the ground. Maybe she thought I had put them there for her as a reward for her loyalty. Oh, well, lesson learned. Petunia could not be trusted with berries. I am already out of space and have not told you about what I discovered yesterday evening while out foraging for berries. Suffice it to say, this is going to be a great year for jams, cobblers, berry shakes and freezing goodies for winter. Until next week, be well. West St., at 4 p.m. Based in Baltimore, Pratt Street Power is, fittingly, called one of the Barbershop Harmony Society’s “young powerhouses of today!” Since their formation in early 2016, they have already accomplished a great deal – including winning the 2016 International Youth Barbershop Quartet Contest in Nashville, TN. They are also the 2019 Mid-Atlantic District 2nd Place Quartet and a 2018 International Quartet Semi-Finalist. All four singers are active members of Parkside Harmony – 2019 Mid-Atlantic District Chorus Champions and 2018 International Choral Medalist. The singers benefit greatly from singing together in the same chorus in addition to their weekly rehearsals. The members of the quartet all have classical music training. They have also studied many other kinds of music, which has influenced what they choose to sing. One of Pratt Street Power’s main goals is to support the Harmony Foundation’s mission of enriching lives through singing by attending youth outreach events for young singers and encouraging young people to sing. ART • Mighty Dog, an abstract

painting by Philip Ward that took 24 years to complete, is home at last at Middle Street Gallery in Washington, Va., from May 24 through June 26. The vibrantly colored paintings in Ward's show, Mighty Dog and Finch, A Journey Unfolding, do not begin with some grand design, he says. “Starting with a small pencil drawing made on-site, one thing leads to another…. missing turnings and circling about, because in painting you have to deal with what you don’t know,” he says. “The journey may lead on, but there is no known destination.” Ward's initial rough sketches over time develop into watercolors and full-size paintings. Each step is carefully considered for its clarity and its faithfulness to the foundational vision, and the final version has to be true to that. But he says he does not strive to convey this process to viewers so much as to encourage

VIEWS Love’s Labors Lost And Found There’s a reason why Shakespeare’s comedies are always about love. Love makes a fool of everyone. The king, the scholar, the cuckolded husband, the badly written poems, the misdirected letters, the fervent promises – they’re all hilarious. (Until it happens to us. Then it’s not funny.) Believed to be among Shakespeare’s earliest plays, “Love’s Labor’s Lost” has never found the popularity of, say, “Twelfth Night” or “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, and that’s too bad. Everything one could want for comedy is there - characters, setup, conflicts, and “the sweet smoke of rhetoric”; all it requires is the vision of a sharp-witted director and a great cast to carry it out. The Folger production now on stage has both of these. Director Vivienne Benesch knew that the key to this play’s success is in the interpretation of its language – and allowing the physical comedy to follow. The result is two hours of laugh-out-loud situations in which the men, led by Ferdinand, King of Navarre (Joshua Robinson), mostly high-minded and serious gents, have vowed to forswear the company of women for three years and concentrate on intellectual pursuits. It is no surprise that they will get spun around the fingers of the Princess of France (Amelia Pedlow) and her retinue. Ms. Benesch envisioned a set that would reflect the King’s plan for three years of unrelieved study. She found it on site in Folger’s walnut paneled Paster Reading Room, complete with bookshelves, globe, and bust of The Bard himself, all handsomely recreated by scene designer Lee Savage. To further honor the opening of the Folger Shakespeare Library, she has set the play in the 1930s. This stylish period, costumed in Tracy Christensen’s elegant confections, provides an ironic backdrop for our swains who fall in love, try to hide it from each other, finally acknowledge it, and set out to win the unwinnable damsels. There’s not a weak link in the chain, but certain moments of scrumptious physicality stand out. Zachary Fine’s Berowne is a magnetic presence on stage, whether or not he’s in his pajamas bewailing his unrequited love. The sequence in which the four gentlemen

A three-year pact renouncing women is made amongst the King (Joshua David Robinson, left) and his friends (Matt Dallal, Zachary Fine, Jack Schmitt) in Folger Theatre’s Love’s Labor’s Lost.

What: “Love’s Labor’s Lost Where: Folger Theatre, 201 E. Capitol St. SE, Washington, D.C. Call: (202) 544-7077 or visit www.folger.edu/ theatre Extended through June 16 enter separately to soliloquize on their beloveds, not realizing that they are being heard and viewed, is priceless. The exposure of offended innocence always gladdens the heart, and the king, He Who Sets the Standards, can hardly upbraid his men on moral grounds when he is discovered kissing a post as if it were his Princess. Shakespeare’s glee in the exotic, or at least the foreign, finds expression in one hot- blooded lover, Don Armado (Eric Hissom), the “fantastical Spaniard” soldier who suddenly meets, and just as suddenly can’t live without, Jaquenetta (Tonya Beckman) our favorite gumchewing diner waitress if ever we had one. His page, the helpful little Moth, (Megan Graves) makes a hilarious virtue of solemnly focused duty to his master. After love, the comedies require a good mix-up of identities or at least letters, and “Love’s Labor’s Lost” has both. Such tangles are usually the job of the clown or fool, and in this case, Costard (Edmund Lewis) is the brawny tradesman complete with tool apron who gamely accepts his penance of service to Armado after being discovered with a wench. While he can be counted on to deliver love letters to the wrong lady, the ladies themselves swap identities for the further confusion of the gentlemen. The courtship continues apace, as our lovelorn beaux disguise themselves as

Russian dancers – or what they think Russian dancers would look like - and put on a performance that, while not likely to make a woman fall in love, will definitely keep her amused. A brisk pace and Colin Bills’ lighting design moves one scene to another seamlessly. This forward momentum, one bit of craziness on top of another, culminates in the Presentation of the Nine Worthies, those towering figures of medieval chivalry deemed worthy of devotion and study. Of course, our performers will make what the English call “a pig’s breakfast” of it to our delight; there is also in its tone a hint of the famous Pyramus and Thisbe scene of a later date. One wonders where it could go from here but for the sudden entrance of a messenger and dark news for the Princess. Where Shakespeare’s comedies by this point would be pairing lovers off in preparation for the final dance and tableaux, this development changes the tone dramatically. It leads to the first serious recognition of love’s demand for patience over the futile and pointless command for mental and physical isolation. It was, after all Berowne who declared love to be the only subject worthy of intense study, and the King, too, having withdrawn his idealistic oath, recommits himself - and his love’s labours - to his lady’s directive of one year’s devoted wait. A superior creative vision carried out by the labor of a flawless cast and crew. Maggie Lawrence is a member of the American Theatre Critics Association. She is a retired English and drama teacher.

Pollinator garden restored after floods By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Town of Culpeper employees and members of the Old Rag Master Naturalists worked Tuesday morning to restore the pollinator garden at Yowell Meadow Park - washed out last summer by a spate of storms and flooding. Planted in October 2017, the pollinator garden was a partnership between the Town of Culpeper, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Old Rag Master Naturalists. The garden was an effort to not only beautify the park, but to provide native plants for pollinators to use as food and habitat. There are more than 485 species of native bees in Virginia, and seven of those bumblebee species are in decline. More than 700 plants of 15 different species were planted at the Yowell Meadow Park in 2017, accounting for more than $3,000. On Tuesday, volunteers worked to weed and mulch the plants that survived the extensive flooding from last summer. Salem Bush, Principal Planner and Zoning Administrator for the Town of Culpeper, said that the heavy rain and work that was being done to the dam at Lake Pelham accounted for the severe flooding. “We’re trying to figure it out as we go,” Bush said. “Last year was a monkey wrench. We knew we were going to have to do routine maintenance, but the fact that the flooding was so bad

last year, it just washed away a lot of the mulch. Plus it pushes the other seeds of the other grasses and stuff into here, so the idea to weed is almost impossible.” Barry Buschow, President-Elect with Old Rag Master Naturalists, said that many of the plants that were part of the garden are naturally water-loving plants. Many of them survived the flooding, while others were either washed away or overcome by weeds. Bush guessed that about 50 percent of what planted survived. “We did make this into a water loving garden area,” Buschow said. “That’s why most of these lived. Unfortunately with the two big floods that we had, it literally covered the area up to the bench. It just brought in all the grass seeds and wiped out the small plants. Now we’re going to have to replant.” The dam work, which is now complete, is what caused much of the flooding. “They had to keep the dam low while they were working on it,” Bush said. “When they kept releasing the water, it kept coming down into Yowell Meadow Park. It was a combination of the worst year of rain in Virginia and then the fact they were working on the dam, it was a double whammy.” Plants above a bench at the garden survived and are flowering now, the plants below the bench were being dug around, transplanted and mulched so they could grow again. Bush said the Old Rag Master Naturalists were key to the project.

Weekly Tarotscope - May 30 10 of Pentacles, 2 of Swords TAROTSCOPES

There is an interesting carryover from last Cara Cutro week’s message about security. The 10 of Pentacles is a card that represents building something stable that lasts over generations. It is often indicative of family lines- things passed down within the bloodline. Sometimes this card can let us know that we are healing or dealing with issues that have their roots in our ancestral past. The appearance of the 10 of Pentacles can also speak mundanely to money or property that is set up in a way to be passed down. This could be you passing it down or having it passed down to you. From a business standpoint this card shows that you are building something with a strong foundation. These things take time of course, but this card is very promising in terms of establishing security and stability.

The 2 of Swords is about taking a time out to pause. Coupled with the 10 of Pentacles, we’re shutting down for a minute so that we can focus on family, or perhaps we are shutdown to our family at this time. That’s okay. We are contemplating in the 2 of Swords. It’s a needed time of inner reflection. If we are facing a decision about business or money/property related themes represented by the 10 of Pentacles, then we want to wait before we disperse wealth or finalize any plans. If you are healing ancestral trauma or examining the roots of family patterns, pause and give yourself time to process this week. Cara Cutro is a spirit centered teacher and life coach residing in Sperryville, VA. She is an herbalist, massage therapist, reiki master, intuitive counselor, tarot reader, and the owner of Abracadabra Massage & Wellness and the Wisdomkeepers School. For a full list of services or to setup an appointment with her or one of her team members, book online www.caracadabra. com or call 540-878-7085.
