Pointing you in the right direction. THE GO-TO GUIDE FOR

CHOOSING THE BEST HEALTH CARE General Physicians Emergency Services Specialists Full-Time Care & More!

Pointing you in the right direction to choose a Physician

How to choose a Physician What do you think of when you think of a good doctor? No matter what kind of physician you see, communication is the key to understanding and receiving the best diagnosis and care. Good physicians are also good listeners. They’re also patient and caring, and accessible when you need them. Finding a doctor who will make themselves available is crucial when your health is at stake. It’s also important to use a doctor who is understanding of your problems, and who uses good communication in helping steer you toward better overall health. Ideally, the doctor-patient relationship is a collaborative one. Good physicians enter a cooperative relationship with patients in order to most effectively monitor your health. They work to offer patient-specific and creative solutions to health problems. And they keep their patients informed about the basic information, at every step along the way. What should you look for in a good doctor? Consider the following tips.

Some insurance companies do not restrict your choice of physicians. If you have such a policy, you can choose from a greater number of physicians. Look to your local newspaper or online advertisements to find potential doctors in your area.

Check to be sure, but it’s likely that you won’t be able to use a physician who isn’t inside your insurance company’s network — unless you’re willing to pay an additional fee. It’s also possible that using a doctor outside your insurer’s primary care network may subject you to out-of-pocket expenses.

MEETING YOUR NEEDS In most cases, a general practitioner will be the best choice to serve as your primary care physician. A general practitioner can be an independent doctor with a family practice, or an internal medicine physician. In some cases, it will make sense to choose a doctor who practices within a particular specialty. Women, for example, might feel more comfortable with an obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/GYN) as their primary care physician. A pediatrician might be the primary care physician for children. Older adults may even seek out a geriatric specialist to serve as their primary care physician.

Remember: your primary care physician needs to fully understand your medical needs, and should be sensitive to your unique concerns. You primary doctor will be the one who will often need to make referrals to specialists, if you should need additional medical work, so choose a primary physician who inspires confidence that they are capable of making the appropriate referrals for your needs.

ASK FOR REFERRALS Talk to the people who know and trust. Friends, family and other trusted sources are the best way to find a new doctor. People will gladly give referrals when they have had positive experiences with their health care providers. They will also provide feedback when the experience was not to their liking.

INSURANCE Your health insurance can play a role in determining the pool of doctors from which you can choose. In many cases, your choice of physicians will be limited by your insurer. Most insurance companies establish contracts with individual doctors or with group practices.

2 | summer 2018 | choices

The American Medical Association or other professional physicians’ organizations in your area will be another useful resource. Prior to making a final decision, always confirm that your physician has a current license to practice with the state medical board. This licensing body will also tell you if he has any pending disciplinary action or complaints.

Health & Rehabilitation and Senior Living Services

Not every doctor accepts new patients. Once you have collected a list of possible physicians, contact them to make sure they will accept new patients, as well as the insurance you carry. Ideally, your first visit will include a routine physical examination and documentation of your medical history. But sometimes insurance carriers will decline payment for routine exams. CONVENIENCE Convenience is another important factor when choosing a physician. His or her office should be easily accessible from your home or workplace. Ensure the doctor has admitting privileges at your preferred hospital in the event you need treatment. Ask where your physician can perform diagnostic tests and procedures. Some doctors might use a separate facility rather than their own offices. Finally, inquire how long it usually takes to book an appointment. When an emergency arises, you will want to know that your new doctor can meet you quickly.

“I cannot imagine a better place than Dogwood Village. The staff treats my dad like family. What a gift this facility and all the staff is to our community.”

is providing optimum vision correction. Our optometrist in Culpeper takes the time to get to know each patient and their unique vision and eye care needs. By understanding your eye care history, personal medical history and family vision history, we are able to better tailor our services to meet your specific vision needs. This includes anticipating potential eye car and vision problems before they develop. For example, if one or more of your parents or grandparents has been diagnosed with glaucoma, you are at increased risk for potentially developing this condition. African-Americans over the age of 40 and Hispanics over the age of 60 are also at increased risk. If you fall into a high-risk group, our optometrist may recommend regular testing for glaucoma, which can be done through an eye pressure exam. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the United States and while it cannot be prevented if it is diagnosed and treated early it can be successfully controlled.

Eyecare of Virginia offers nūretin - a new approach to delay the onset and slow the progression of Diabetic Retinopathy.” The eye, and the retina in particular, has a very high percentage of an essential fatty acid called DHA that your body cannot make or store; you can only get it from a food source or by supplementation. The good news is that nūretin contains the amount and ratio of DHA and other Omega-3s in a form that makes it easier for people with diabetes to absorb. Nūretin is a daily commitment and like changes in diet and increasing exercise it is important for you to manage your diabetes on a daily basis. It’s two, easy to swallow, softgels. Dr. Miles Press has been serving the greater Culpeper and King George community. He has practiced for over four decades as an Optometrist. Licensed by the state of Virginia to practice optometry, Dr. Press’s background includes anatomy, biochemistry and physiology, uniquely qualifying him to diagnose a wide range of eye health issues, including the diagnosis of glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes and hypertension.

Wellspring Health Services:

Community-Focused Care Some 18 months ago, Khalid Athar, MD, and a small group of local supporters established Wellspring Health Services as a way of seeking an answer to a question with big implications: would the Culpeper area benefit from a locallyowned, community-minded health system that offered a wide range of services, with expanded hours, all close by? The answer couldn’t be a more clear “yes.” Since its startup, Wellspring has become one of the fastest growing businesses in the area, offering a constantly expanding menu of services all rooted in the idea of community-based, patientcentered care. But even more important—Wellspring is

8 | summer 2018 | choices

helping more area residents get and stay healthy. “We are very honored by the community’s overwhelmingly and positive welcoming response to Wellspring,” Athar said. “It’s gratifying to be able to meet a local need, and to see our model of care gain such momentum in such a short period of time.” What began in a single location as a family practice and walk-in clinic has now expanded into three locations in Culpeper and one location in Madison, with a second location set to open in Madison in the near future.

The can’t-miss building with the bright green trim on Creativity Drive near Target is likely what most area residents associate with Wellspring—that’s the family practice and walk-in urgent care arm, open seven days a week from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm year ‘round. Wellspring also has another location in a space at 541 Sunset Lane, above the Culpeper Surgery Center, which is now home to the provider’s specialist services. Rounding off the Wellspring offerings in Culpeper is a massage therapy clinic at 105 North Main Street. The exponential growth of Wellspring spilled over into the surrounding county of Madison earlier this year when they opened their first clinic on Main Street in February and are set to further expand upon this in September by adding another location on Route 29, currently a Sentara office. This location will house family practice and specialist services for Madison-area residents. The continually growing combination of offerings is not only serving the general health needs of the area, but is making it easy for residents to access a range of specialty services, all nearby, that include pain management, sleep medicine, gynecology, weight loss, perioperative medicine, nutritional counseling, diabetic education, neurology, pediatric services, foot and ankle care, chronic care, and ear, nose, and throat medicine. In addition, Wellspring has the ability to perform lab tests and x-rays—keeping care local without requiring patients to travel to multiple different facilities. Athar is quick to point out that it’s not just about providing services—it’s about providing services rooted in a set of core values that put the patient first.

services, and top-tier providers has made Wellspring an innovative model for the future of health care—a future not based on treating patients as a collection of diagnoses and related treatments, but one based on achieving and maintaining overall health. “We are proud of the services we provide at Wellspring, and look forward to expanding our range of services in the coming months and years,” Athar said. “But one thing that will never change is our commitment to building relationships with our patients.”

Be the Reason Someone Smiles Today

“From the beginning, we’ve pursued a model for Wellspring based on collaboration and community,” Athar said. “We take a team approach to health care, not just among our staff, but with our staff and our patients—we’re all part of a team. And we bring that approach to services that are available right here in our community, so that our patients don’t need to drive long distances to facilities they don’t know.” The idea of responding to the local community’s needs has also guided Wellspring’s day-to-day business, right down to hours of operations. “It’s estimated that about 14,000 Culpeper area residents have substantial commutes to and from work, and that can make it hard to receive health care if providers are only open during normal business hours,” Athar said. “We’ve responded by establishing an walk-in urgent care facility open 365 days a year, and we are looking into expanding the hours of many of our specialty services.”

Pointing you in the right direction to choose a Home Care Service

Choosing the right Home Care Service for the Elderly It’s inevitable that, as people age, they’ll eventually need assistance with the activities of daily living. But, where nursing homes were once the only option, there are now many more. In-home care is becoming an increasingly popular choice for assisting elderly people in living their lives. Not only does in-home care allow people to remain at home, where they’re comfortable and can feel independent — it often makes for a significantly more affordable option than relinquishing care to a full-time nursing home. If you have a loved one who needs to explore care options, keep these tips on selecting an in-home care provider in mind. Medical or Not? People’s needs are different. Some aging people have more advanced medical needs than others. One of the most important things for you to consider is what level of medical care, if any, an in-home care service will provide. In-home providers vary greatly in the types of help they offer. Some are staffed by nurses or other licensed health-care providers, which is important if you’re looking for any actual medical care as part of your needs. But for many seniors who don’t need robust medical services in their homes, there are other providers that focus on helping with day-to-day needs like cleaning, cooking and personal grooming. They’re more like personal assistants to help seniors live a great life, not necessarily offering any nursing care. Make sure you know the difference and ask exactly what kinds of services will be provided. For medical needs, always talk to your doctor to get advice about what would be best for your situation. The People Next to medical concerns, another important step is 10 | summer 2018 | choices

understanding which person — or people — will be visiting your home. Different companies handle this in different ways. Most likely, you’ll be assigned a regular person who you can get to know and be comfortable interacting with. Inviting someone into your home is a big responsibility, so it’s important you find someone you can trust and enjoy spending time with. What happens when your regular staffer can’t visit, though? Vacations, illness and other conflicts mean sometimes you’ll need to have a different person do the job, so ask your provider how they handle substitutes when needed. Track Record Find out how long the home care service has been in business. Usually when a company has been around for a long time, that’s a good sign. With a competitive market for in-home care services in most

areas, only the best ones will stay in business for a long period of time. Making a Plan Because every person’s needs are different, find out what kinds of plans will be a good fit for your needs. From the frequency of visits to the types of services offered, you need to find a good match for your exact situation. If the in-home service will be helping with any medical needs, your doctor ought to be involved with making the plan. Most home care services will be able to coordinate with your doctor or hospital personnel to come up with a plan of care. Reputation Finally, ask around to learn whatever you can about the service’s reputation. Your doctor, friends and family may be able to tell you their experiences with certain service providers in your area — good or bad — so try to find first-person experiences to make a good choice. The best home health providers will have a long track record and lots of happy customers, so a good reputation in your community is a sign that you’re making the right pick. •
