LOCAL NEWS Kelsey's Big Give slated for Saturday at Culpeper UMC By Jeff Say

Culpeper Times Staff Writer As pastor of Culpeper United Methodist Church, Randy Orndorff was used to Virginia State Police coming to his house with bad news about something that happened to one of his congregation. However, on Aug. 31, 2007, that visit was for him. He opened the door, not realizing the news he was about to be delivered would shatter his world. His wife, Leanne, and his sons, immediately knew by the look on the troopers’ face. His daughter Kelsey was gone. It’s been 11 years since his middle child was killed in a car wreck on the Friday of Labor Day weekend along Route 3 - on her way to Fredericksburg for a Christian concert.

Her memory, her passion and her mission still live on in Kelsey’s Big Give, starting this Saturday at Culpeper UMC at 7 a.m. The now 10th annual Big Give is the church’s way of remembering her spirit and her heart for helping others. This year 170 volunteers will work on 25 projects in Culpeper, ranging from painting handicap accessible ramps, doing work at the Culpeper Senior Center, doing yard work for those who are unable and working at the church. They’ll also continue work on removing bamboo from a yard along East Street, a project they started last year. There’s a level of project for everyone, Orndorff said, pointing out children can help tidy up the playground at the church. Starting volunteers young is at the heart of the Big Give, because Kelsey’s mission trips began when

she was still in elementary school. Her father remembers she went to Four Corners twice, went to work on an Indian reservation in South Dakota, volunteered locally and with Impact the Valley and was one of the first people deployed from Culpeper UMC when Hurricane Katrina hit Gulfport, Miss. “She always had a heart to reach out and help people who were definitely less fortunate,” Orndorff said. “I don’t how she did it, the projects she worked on.” In fact, some of the last weeks of her life were spent helping others. Admitting he doesn’t talk about this much, Orndorff recalled a family vacation to Gatlinburg, Tenn. that they took right before Kelsey died. Their oldest son Josh was volunteering with a group called Team Effort in the area and the family was nearby.

Kelsey didn’t spend any time with her parents on vacation, instead she spent the whole week with her brother helping with Team Effort. She was so dedicated, she convinced her parents to let her stay - eventually coming home on a Greyhound bus. “That’s just what she liked to do,” Orndorff said. Kelsey’s Big Give is a way to continue that mission, but it’s also a way to keep part of Kelsey alive. Orndorff said a day doesn’t go by that he doesn’t think of his daughter. Her photo adorns the front of his phone and Orndorff has a collage of photos of other children that have died young with Kelsey taking up the center spot. “I think this is a way that keeps her spirit alive,” he said. Anniversary of Battle of Cedar Mountain set for Aug. 9 By Ashleigh Christopher Culpeper Times Intern

Aug. 9 marks the 156th anniversary of the Battle of Cedar Mountain, the bloodiest battle to date in Culpeper County. To commemorate it, the Friends of Cedar Mountain Battlefield is hosting the annual Living History Weekend event on August 11 and 12. The Battle of Cedar Mountain had a very significant impact on Culpeper history, according to Friends of Cedar Mountain Battlefield president Diane Logan. “The battle was one of the earlier battles during the war,” said Logan. “It was during this time that the civilians actually realized that war was on their doorsteps. There were a lot of civilian casualties here. Homes were destroyed in this area around the battlefield, and there are a lot of civilian stories related to this battle.” This year is the sixth year the Friends of Cedar Mountain Battle-

Even in death, her mission remains. “The last words I had with her before she left, she was volunteering for the Free Clinic and I had just seen a lady at the hospital who was telling me what a great

According to Logan, part of what makes the event so successful is the living historians that work the event. “We make sure that we have the best quality living historians we could possibly find, and I’m very glad to say that we do,” said Logan. “These people are very much involved in not only knowing the proper equipment to bring and the uniforms that would have been worn, but they study the battle itself, and they know the events that happened on this field. They will be portraying units that were actually here.” The Cedar Mountain Battlefield, along with the Brandy Station Battlefield, is being considered as an addition to the Virginia State Park system. “We do hope that Cedar Mountain Battlefield and Brandy Station Battlefield will become part of the Virginia State Park system,” Logan

said. “We continue working with our state legislature, and we have lots of support on the state level and certainly with the community around Culpeper. This will not only impact Culpeper but Madison and Orange. Civil War Trust continues to work with the state and we hope that it will come to fruition in the next year or two.” The event will take place at the battlefield along long James Madison Highway/Route 15 south of Cul-

peper at 9465 General Winder Road. Festivities will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and parking is available. “[The battle] is part of Culpeper’s history, and Culpeper’s history is what makes it so unique,” Logan said. “This had a huge impact of the civilians of that day and knowing your history I think instills pride in the community whether you are born and raised in Culpeper or, like me, you’ve moved here from another state.”

I’ve never had any more pain in my life than that night and of course the weeks ahead.” The church rallied around him and his family, and continue to do

so with Kelsey’s Big Give. “I have heard those things happen in different ways in different churches, that people go through these things and people don’t know how to deal with it,” Orndorff said. “That wasn’t this church. This church stepped up and did amazing things in helping us. Not only the church, the staff, the district superintendent.” That’s how the church ended up with Pastor Norma Jean Fellows and soon the Stephen Ministry at the church followed - a ministry that helps people cope through

that type of crisis. Orndorff said that experience has helped him relate to others who face similar tragedies. “You go through other losses in your life, you lose your grandparents or that type of thing so you have an idea of what grief is,” he said. “But you go through something like that, your empathy level with people just goes off the scale. It's not easy being cheesy By Jeff Say

Culpeper Times Staff Writer Jeffery Mitchell was the big cheese in Pittsburgh last week. The head sales lead for the American Cheese Festival’s annual cheese sale, Mitchell oversaw the preparation of 10,000 pounds of gouda, cheddar, provolone and more - all to be sold off to hungry cheese enthusiasts at the festival’s culmination on July 28. Mitchell presided over an average of 16 volunteers as they worked all day Wednesday and Thursday, getting the cheese ready for the annual cheese sale. The cheese, brought in by cheesemakers from all over the country, was judged and then is broken down into pound or two pound chunks to be sold to support the American Cheese Education Foundation. All 10,000 pounds sold. Standing in a tractor trailer cooler filled to the brim with cheese, Mitchell had a “cheesy” grin on his face as he pointed to rare and delectable selections.

“Think of this as you would a library,” Mitchell said. “You’re going to take a book out, in this case it’s cheese, the cheese is coded and the numbers have to match. It’s almost like surgery, all the parts that come in have to have their stickers and match on their way out.” Assisted by cheesemongers, retailers, distributors and simply cheese enthusiasts, Mitchell jumped from station to station, checking out what his workers were doing - chipping in where needed and helping direct traffic along the way. Mitchell and the volunteers broke down 40 pound blocks of cheese, cutting them into different sizes for usable portions. “It’s a process to get through, we’re grateful team yesterday set us up so well,” Mitchell said. Mitchell logged eight hours on Tuesday, 14 on Wednesday and started work on at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday before finishing up around 3:30 p.m. As he walked out of the basement of the David A. Quick with a suggestion, or a joke, the cheese enthusiasts seemed to all be on the same page of promoting American dairy. “Cheese people are generous, happy people,” Mitchell said. “They’re very supportive at levels. The people working down here yesterday were titans of the industry.” The convention center teemed with what Mitchell called “cheese rock stars.” Lilith Spencer talked about her experiences, Mateo Kehler shared his philosophy, American Cheese Society President John Antonelli and his wife Kendall talked about their social media strategy, while Janet Fletcher signed her book upstairs. “It’s neat to see them giving back,” Mitchell said. “They’re here, they’re on the floor and you’re talking to them. You’re working with them.” For volunteers like Julia Mirek, this was an experience of a lifetime. The Pittsburgh chef and consultant found out about the convention through the volunteer coordinator and then discovered there was a scholarship program for chefs. She quickly jumped at the chance and was entertaining Mitchell and his team with cheese jokes Thursday afternoon.

“What did the cheese say to itself in the mirror? Haloumi.” Mirek let out a lyrical laugh, “What cheese do you use to get a bear down from a tree? Camambere.” She beamed as she opened a case of cheese, the Humboldt Fog from Cyprus Grove. “I have not worked with this amount of cheese and it was really exciting to unpack some of the cases of my favorites,” Mirek said. Mia Jones, from Maryland, was one of 70 Whole Foods employees who came out to volunteer and take in the convention. “It’s a great opportunity for knowledge,” Jones said. “It’s a wonderful education experience and we are all about supporting artisanal cheese across the world but especially in America.” What about cheese causes people to flock to the ACS convention every year? “It’s delicious, it makes you feel good when you eat it,” Jones said. ‘It’s just a great food experience.” Eric Rector, of Monroe Cheese Studio in Monroe, Maine, said he loves to come and talk with fellow cheesemakers. “For me, as a cheesemaker it’s new ideas,” Rector said. “Distributors or retailers are looking for new options, people all come for different reasons. "It’s really great food, it’s a great

food experience with the experts guiding us.” Opening in 2006, Monroe Cheese Studio has seen the artisanal cheese community in America grow in just 12 years. “It’s just grown explosively,” Rector said. “Of course it’s been for the better because more people have access to high quality American made cheese. More American cheese makers are learning more and high quality techniques for making safe cheeses.” Convention goers shared recipes, beer and wine combinations and more. It was that camaraderie that drew Mitchell back to the convention this year. “Most of us work in an environment where we are cross selling, where we are selling cheese but also wine and beer,” Mitchell said. “Sampling product you find that cheesemongers become in the best sense, picky. They are looking for a certain taste and taste combinations.” Mitchell, owner of the Culpeper Cheese Company, said that it was an honor to sit and talk to Kehler of Jasper Hill and other cheese makers. “He sat at a table of cheesemongers and told us what they, in 15 years, they had achieved at Jasper Hill and then he turned around and pointed to all of us and said ‘you’re the ones making that happen,” Mitchell said.

Moments like that were common at the convention, and Mitchell said he was equally handing out advice while soaking in the experiences of his peers. “I think the neat part for me is that one point you are a mentor and the next you are a mentee,” Mitchell said. “Each of us know something and being able to share what you know while at the same time being able to pick up something different. That will happen all throughout the conference.” The Culpeper Cheese Company closed its doors in December of 2017, but Mitchell said it won’t be long before they open at a new location and he said there’s a likelihood they open a second location in an adjoining area before they even open in Culpeper. “I can’t wait, I miss people,” Mitchell said. “We are in lease negotiations, there are some ADA issues we need to mitigate. That’s where we are at right now. I’d like to be within 90 days.” When they do reopen, he’ll be ready to share some of the cheeses he discovered at the convention and prepare visitors for next year’s ACS festival - which will be even closer to home. Next year the ACS will host the festival July 31-Aug. 3 in Richmond. For Mitchell, that’s all “gouda.”

I’m a hands on learner. That’s why, when Jeffery Mitchell said to me at the American Cheese Festival Conference in Pittsburgh, Pa., “put on a hair net, grab an apron, go wash your hands, we’ll put on a line,” I immediately jumped at the chance. I traveled five hours for two reasons - to watch Mitchell run the show at the American Cheese Festival and to visit family and go to a Pirate game. It was highly unlikely anyone was going to hand me a glove and tell me to go play right field for the Pirates, so this was the next best opportunity. In a cooler behind Mitchell sat 10,000 pounds of cheese. Camembert, cheddar, provolone and everything in between. All American made, with many of the cheesemakers just two floors above us, this was an opportunity to sample a taste of the

U.S. without having to travel to every state. To set the scene, the ACS convention was like nothing I have ever experienced. Sure, I’ve been to plenty of industry meetings over the years - fishing, hunting, journalism, health care - but each one seemed stodgy and very technical. Most attendees at those conventions were forced to be there and while educational - none of them showed the passion and the enthusiasm the “cheese family” did. The minute I walked into the David A. Lawrence Convention Center, I was greeted by friendly faces. “Oh, you’re here to do a story on cheese, try this one!” One friendly cheesemonger said as she grabbed me as I asked for directions to the media table. Once there, I was able to listen to American Cheese Society President John Antonelli talk about the mission - to raise the awareness of American cheese. It’s not just that stuff that comes wrapped in cellophane and looks like an Oompa Loompa from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. American cheese is the product of hard work, taken from grass-fed cows, aged with unique American ingredients and served

with a love that is in your face and exuberant. In it’s 35th year, the cheese society conference introduced cheesemongers to cheesemakers, retailers to farm owners and me to some very unique tastes. As I rolled up my sleeves in the basement of the convention center, two floors below the cheesemakers who were holding tastings to other members of the media, I got to see exactly how the cheese society promotes itself. In a room filled with thousands pounds of cheese, I questioned Mitchell about how much this would all sell for? “On the open market, in the hundreds of thousands,” he said. At the festival, it was a steep discount. The public was able to purchase a bag for $60 and then fill that cooler bag with as much cheese as they could. The volunteers - myself included - broke down the cheese from 20 and 40 pound chunks on Wednesday and Thursday into more easily handled one and two pound cubes. Some of those cubes would have sold for $35 a pound. Instead the ACS was giving the public a chance to load up on cheese that they would normally cost a fortune for just pennies on the dollar. The volunteers helping break it all down were a diverse bunch. There were 70 volunteers from Whole Foods - Mia walked me through how to wrap a chunk of cheddar. She showed me and nervously turned away - convinced I wouldn’t be able to figure it out. She turned around to find that I had already wrapped five pieces, pulling the cellophane down to the edge of the table, setting the cheese “pretty side up” on the edge and then vacuum sealing it in one fell swoop.

“I worked at a grocery store for six years,” I explained. “I had to know how to do everything, I’ve spent my fair share of time in the deli.” Down the line, another Whole Foods employee cut the cheese, it was shuffled down to me and I wrapped it. Beside me, Jim Stange, of Pittsburgh, put the coded sticker on the cheese so the public could figure out where it came from. Jim and his wife Sandy weren’t cheesemongers or makers - they were just newly crowned cheese enthusiasts. They had attended a cheese tasting at a pizza shop that was closed on Mondays, but opened one evening for a tasting. They loved it and quickly signed up to volunteer for convention in their hometown. “This is just a lot of fun,” Jim said to me, as we talked Pirates baseball for well over an hour, filling up a tray of cheese while we chatted. Our job finished, the tray was wheeled off and more came. Inside a refrigerated tractor trailer cooler sat 24 more racks ready to be prepared. By 4 p.m. Thursday, they were all done and ready for the cheese sale. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to stick around for the whole three-day conference, but the picture I got in my email from Mitchell told the story. There sat the cheeses, many of which I worked on, on a long series of tables. Within an hour and a half, only a handful of cheese remained. In the end, they sold out. Ten thousand pounds of cheese - gone. That’s a lot of fondue. Next year, I’ll be back to continue to follow the cheese family - I guess call me a groupie. In 2019, they’ll be in Richmond July 31-Aug. 3. Check it out, it’s a cheesy time and you’ll love it.

Part two of the “French Royalty in Culpeper” is ready for delivery however it will have to wait another week. I had a wonderful experience last Friday with my youngest granddaughter. While I am basking in the delight of the day and the memories are fresh in my mind, I wanted to share. On her last birthday, I gave her a trip to Jamestown and Williamsburg. Her birthday is in early November and it has taken eight months to bring the gift to fruition. Fewer butterflies for this year’s count? Just when the weather seemed to be improving for butterflies, rain set in the day of Rappahannock County’s annual butterfly count, so what will that mean for the results? Anecdotal reports of fewer than normal butterflies being sighted have been coming in since spring, matching my own observations. Heavy spring rains were probably a big factor. Butterflies are not built to fly in rainy, cold or windy weather, all of which occurred this year and last year. Finally, a short stretch of hot, dry weather in July gave hope that butterfly numbers would tick up, and they did a bit where I live. The week before our local count, the number of eastern tiger and spicebush swallowtails were still low on the blooming meadow phlox in one tiny garden that normally attracts up to a dozen. Living on a property that is mostly forest, I usually see lots of these two swallowtails, whose host plants are trees and shrubs. Few meadow butterflies usually show up and, if so, don’t stay for long, despite my landlords and I planting patches of native meadow plants around the property. Rappahannock’s local count — officially the Little WashingtonRappahannock County Butterfly Count — is one of many counts held throughout the United States this time of year as part of the annual Fourth of July count of the North American Butterfly Association (NABA). I don’t take part in any more but do keep an eye on butterflies and analyze and report in this column the results in this column, which are sent to me by Old Rag Master Naturalists (ORMN), the Virginia Master Naturalist chapter that founded and manages the count. This year’s Rappahannock count was held July 21. The day before, six swallowtails showed up on the phlox in the same garden, which is about the average this time of year. Some years, as many as a dozen will be nectaring at the same time, especially late in the summer, but other years there are only a few. I was starting to think the weather would not depress count numbers. Last year butterflies were also slow to show up, but count results were good. What also gave hope for a normal count were the results of another NABA count, at Island Ford, in Elkton, Virginia. Held this year on June 28,

this count is smaller in terms of the number of counters and areas counted. Early counts also don’t usually result in as high a number of individual butterflies than counts held later in the summer, like Rappahannock’s, but can be a harbinger when compared to past years’ results for those counts. In a recent email, Mike Smith, the leader of the Island Ford count, reported that it was “successful.” The number of individual butterflies, 735, showed a vast improvement from the previous year, when only 410 were reported, which had been a “new low,” Smith said. Unfortunately, late Friday night the rain returned and was forecast to stay for a few days. The next morning, around the time the count was to begin, the rain quit for a while where I live, and the sun broke through the clouds briefly. A few swallowtails came to the phlox, but then the rain returned, the wind picked up and the temperature fell to around 70 degrees — suboptimal conditions for butterflies to be active. The butterflies disappeared again, likely taking cover in the forest nearby. On the day after our count, I had coffee with Robin Williams, one of the count’s founders and a team leader. She said that, judging by the areas her team covered, the total number of butterflies is likely to be low, perhaps less than a thousand. Complicating the total, one team, led by a butterfly expert from outside the county did not show because of the weather, so one naturalized site that normally produces good numbers was also not counted this year, she added. This will reduce the overall numbers, so I’ll be looking more closely at areas that were counted, checking that against the average for those sites. It takes time for the volunteer leaders of our count to check and compile the data, so I usually don’t get the results until fall. Once I have them, I’ll compare them to previous years and to data shared with me by other counts in our area to see how the rainy weather may have affected our count. Whatever the results, we are likely to see more butterflies later in the summer if we get drier weather. CHURCH An 'aging' opportunity Every eight seconds. Today in America someone is turning sixtyfive years of age every eight seconds. This equals into more than 10,000 people daily as this trend will continue over the next 30+ years. By 2030, one out of every five Virginians will be at that age threshold. A majority of people moving into Culpeper today are fifty or better. Our community was just recognized as a fast-growing retirement area. The “age wave” is coming ashore, but what does this really mean? Some may believe that aging is bad, as it means we’re getting older, sicker, and less productive in our living. While there are certainly both physical and psychological changes which occur in the aging

process, there are also a plethora of benefits to becoming older. The opportunity of time. The opportunity to try new things. The opportunity of learning. The opportunity of becoming politically active. The opportunity of forging new relationships. The opportunity to work. And the opportunity to serve. While every person ages differently, becoming mature does not prevent us from living life to the fullest. And that’s exactly God’s view. In Holy Scripture we read how God promises to take care of and use us for his purposes as we become older. In Isaiah 46:4 it is written, “even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, I will bear; I will carry and will save.” The concept that the Lord using us to share his “Good News” to future generations is seen as the psalmist cries out in Psalm 72:18, “So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake

me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.” And in II Samuel we’re told about an aged man named Barzillai. Barzillai served King David as David’s son, Absalom, was trying to wrestle the kingdom away from his father. Are you interested in learning more about God’s plan for us as we grow older? residents desire to keep living in their homes if there were supports available, members of the faith, governmental, social service and business community have come together to form a task force group called, “Culpeper Livable Aging Community” (C.L.A.C). The purpose of this group is to look for ways to help people to “age in place.” For more information, please call 540270-1026. Aging is alive and well in Culpeper, Virginia! But as a community we’re not looking at getting older as just the final stage of a person’s life. We see it as a wonderful opportunity to grow, experience, learn and serve. The process of aging cannot be altered or stopped. However, in our mature years, we can ceratinly live life to the fullest and make a positive impact upon the generations to come.

As fate would have it, the weather forecast for the Williamsburg area was looking more than just dicey: eighty percent chance of rain and a flash flood watch until 8 PM Wednesday night. I was faced with what I thought was a no-win situation. Do I disappoint now and postpone the trip, or do I take her and get stranded somewhere in flooded waters after spending hours getting soaking wet. What to do? After consulting her mom and the older sister, I decided to be upfront and asked her to not give up. I advised her of the situation and told her that Friday was looking good. The amazing child said, “OK.” We shared a delightful spend-the-night-withMema and had some fun as well on Wednesday. Not wanting to miss an opportunity to indoctrinate my own flesh and blood with an interest in history, I called a friend and got permission for a visit to a very old historic house. We then headed back to Culpeper for a sandwich to go from Tom’s and off to Yowell Meadow Park for a picnic. Topped off the afternoon with a walk around the trail identifying trees by their leaves and bark. Friday continued to look good

at least as far as the prediction of precipitation, but now I had a warning light on my car that was not to be messed with. No time to have it checked out. The only sound choice was to take the pickup truck despite its relentless thirst for gasoline! We struck out on our journey early Friday morning and arrived at the Jamestown Settlement by 10:30 AM. We climbed aboard all three ships, walked the Native Village and explored the replicated Fort James. The next stop was Jamestown proper taking in Old Town at the site of the original fort and New Town. It was blistering hot and the humidity had to be 125 percent. In between the Old and New, we surrendered the desire to cram as much as possible into the day and paused for lunch. Despite what I said about the weather we sat at a picnic table outside watching the automobile ferry cross the James River. By the time we walked through the fort and to the far end of New Town to see the “Angela” site, we were dragging. My nine-year-old granddaughter looked up at me and said, “Mema, I feel like a wet towelette.” My spirits were lifted, and my energy renewed by her wit and attitude. We made it back to the truck,

stop to witness the artisan blow a blob of molten glass into a beautiful blue wine bottle and off we went to Colonial Williamsburg. A carriage ride seemed the perfect answer to the weary travelers from Culpeper followed by a review of the Fife and Drum Corps. We could not depart without a photo in the stocks and the purchase of goodies for the family from the Wythe Candy store. A very special day for the memory book! Until next week, be well. People who create these businesses are called entrepreneurs," says the dictionary. Any entrepreneurs in the greater Culpeper area? A few thousand is what my BBB database tells me are licensed in that region, and most are less than 20 employees each. Across the Old Dominion are found people willing to scrape and save, borrow if needed, and/or sell lemonade on the sidewalk if that's what it takes to hatch a dream. They put in the sweat equity, the

What is your school doing to protect you? Two Fridays ago I was a role player at Culpeper High School for an active shooter event put on by the Culpeper Sheriff’s Office. I was in the administrative room by the front door of the school and the first person shot. As I sat there and watched the shooter go in the building, I said how easy would this be if it was real. I don’t remember seeing the second shooter, but someone told me he got in the front door after the first shooter came in. Then came the sheriff deputies and they did their thing and finally got both shooters. Here is what I observed and got out of this exercise. Too much glass and none of it is bullet proof, not even 3M film to prevent people using a baseball bat to get in the building or in a classroom. All the classrooms have big windows in each door, but now black curtains can be hung over the windows. There are emergency bags in the classroom. Shots fired in a big building can not be traced by listening. The echo throughout the building precludes pinpointing any loud noise. Doors are automatically locked when closed, a very good thing unless someone who belongs in the class is caught in a hall with a shooter and can’t get in. But, it is a good practice that no door is opened on lockdown until opened by a key from

sleepless nights; whatever’s needed to succeed. When I retired from the Marine Corps years ago I became one of these entrepreneurs who dreamed, sweated, and finally succeeded. I can do it; you can do it too. Risks? You bet. Worries? Yep. Rewarding? The goal. Entrepreneurs made Virginia great. Still today it’s entrepreneurs who significantly keep it moving forward. The first couple years are critical to a new business succeeding, but it doesn’t have to face the odds alone. There are many professional associations and organizations ready to help the entrepreneur beat the often high odds of succeeding. One organization, the one I work for, has been around for a century— always keeping itself trustworthy, highly relevant, and technically supportive. outside. There is a color code system designed by the Sheriff’s office with colors and door numbers, but you have a hard time seeing them. Instead of seeing big 2 foot by 2 foot color patches along corridors one only sees a 5 x 7 color patch occasionally along a corridor. I was told that principals did not like large patches, something about aesthetics. (This is true in all Culpeper County Schools). The color code system is very unique and helps first responders coming in the building and searching the various corridors in the building. Large color patches are needed along with large hall numbers so students will be aware and remember where they are so if asked where something is happening, the student wouldn’t say “by Mrs. Tracy’s class,” but would say the color and number. Again, this would have to be emphasized during the school year. The event was coordinated through the Sheriff’s Office, but included fire and rescue, EMTs, school busses, parking control and entrance control. A tremendous job and well done by everyone and something that needs to be done on a regular basis. I personally think that many more high school students should be asked to volunteer to these events. After all, 200 or more students in the exercise would add much more realism to the event and would give the students added experience of what to do in the event something like this really

happens. The school has a student list and could ask students to volunteer. From what I have seen and read about other school shootings, in today’s age students are willing to shoot other students for whatever reason. This is a new outlook on life I don’t understand. In my day, students carried pocket knives to school and guns were in cars during hunting season, but no one ever thought of killing other students. When I hear students and adults talk about gun control they are totally missing the point. Look at all the silly signs outside a school, gun free and drug free zones. That’s supposed to stop school shootings? The question that should be asked by students and parents is what is my school doing to protect me as a student, and my child as a parent. Ask that question and one will probably get an answer. We have a school deputy sheriff and we are doing our best, but the biggest answer is it’s too expensive to make the school safer the way it should be. There are many ways: one entrance, clear backpacks, metal detectors, control rooms, bullet proof glass and hardened walls in places, doors with electronic indicators showing open and closed to prevent entering school, more security officers, communication repeaters and etc. The list can get pretty long.
