LOCAL NEWS XPress Copy 'Grinch' video with CPS goes viral By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Culpeper residents can rest assured, Christmas won’t be ruined this year. A few weeks ago, we wrote short story on the crew at Xpress Copy and Graphics donating a wrap to the Culpeper Police Department to promote the Blue and Red Santa Project. The Christmas themed police cruiser has drawn a lot of
attention in town, but another aspect of that project is going viral. Jonathan James, owner of XPress Copy, and his employee Tim Hickling came up with a fun way to promote project online - filming a “Culpeper Cops” video where the iconic Dr. Seuss character The Grinch steals an XPress Copy van filled with presents - and he’s later apprehended by the Culpeper Police Department. Sgt. Richard McKnight and Officer John Minor
catch the Grinch as he pulls back into Xpress Copy and after arrested, he gives an impassioned plea to donate to the Blue and Red Santa Project. The whole project was a special one for James and his crew. “I just really care a lot about law enforcement, my wife has a lot of family members involved in it,” James said. ‘I just think they go above and beyond so many ways and I just don’t feel they get
enough visibility or credit for what they do.” James said he and Hickling came up with the video idea on the fly, when the police stopped by to pick up the cruiser prior to the Downtown Trick or Treat. It didn’t take long for Hickling to come up with the script. “I love being creative and I have a lot of experience with creative ➤ See Grinch, Page 15

Powell Wellness Center honored with award Powell Wellness Center has been honored as Certified Medical Fitness Facility of the Year by the Medical Fitness Association (MFA). This award is presented to a medical fitness center with standards of excellence that set a benchmark for the medical fitness industry, which has nearly 50 medical fitness facilities nationally. PWC director Eric Good accepted the award at the MFA annual conference in early November. PWC, which celebrated its 11th anniversary in September 2018, is one of only three MFA-certified medical fitness facilities in Virginia. Certification recognizes that PWC offers the expertise and programming necessary to safely and effectively assist people, regardless of their current health status, to develop, initiate, and maintain an active lifestyle that minimizes risk of illness and disease and promotes health and wellness. PWC’s medical fitness programs are overseen by a medical director and advisory board. In addition to serving its members, PWC uniquely supports the local community’s health and wellness interests in several ways: FitScripts: a physician referral program serving individuals managing or transitioning from a medical
condition, or needing additional support to improve their level of physical activity. Through a number of specially designed “tracks,” FitScripts has served nearly 1400 community members since its launch in 2013. New tracks added in 2018 serve individuals with Parkinsons disease and pre and post natal wellness needs. Health Matters: a free monthly program open to the public that offers insights from Culpeper Medical Center and PWC professionals on health topics of wide interest, typically attracting 3050 attendees. Nutrition services: Powell’s Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with an integrative approach focused on holistic wellness is available for consultations with PWC members and the community. Membership: Fitness scholarships are available based on income and enrollment discounts are available for teachers, first responders, and town and county employees.Swim lessons: open to the public, held year-round in PWC’s aquatic complex with warm water pool, therapy pockets, two lane walking oval and lap lanes.
CCPS budget survey available for residents Josh Houston (Editor's note: This is weekly series highlighting members of Culpeper's Youth Council. To join Culpeper Youth, go to www.culpeperyouth.org to apply.) Every year people gather around the dinner table for a Thanksgiving meal: usually with a Christmas tree lit prematurely in the background. Some of the people at that table will be unfamiliar to you, and some of those people are going to have extremely different opinions than you. Whatever the oddities or disparities of your guest list: you are all still family. Before anyone begins cutting the turkey, I believe it is important to reflect on the troubles we have been facing as a people and as a country. Our nation today is noticeably divided on many issues, and its a common joke that that seeps into the discussion at the dinner table on what is supposed to be a holiday about coming together. I hope you will all think of the many hundreds who will not be able to visit their family this Thanksgiving, those who may have no family left, and those who may have no home to celebrate in or no money to celebrate with. Keep these people in your hearts and in your minds, and remember them before you start arguing with anyone at the table. Not everyone has a family to be thankful for: be thankful for yours.
As the Culpeper County School Board begins its Fiscal Year 2020 budget planning process, they would like to hear from you. When developing a spending plan, the School Board seeks to balance the needs of the entire school district while maintaining a high quality instructional program. They hope you will take a few minutes to answer questions to help guide the process. The survey can be found on the Culpeper County Public Schools website at www.culpeperschools.org. If you don't have access to the internet, please send written comments to Culpeper County Public Schools, 450 Radio Lane, Culpeper, VA 22701 Attention: Pearl V. Jamison. Blue Devils move on to Group 3 finals with win over Tigers By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Culpeper County High School overcame multiple injuries and a stout running game to defeat Brentsville District High School 38-13 in the semifinals of the VHSL Class A playoffs Friday. The Blue Devils never trailed, but only had the ball for eight series as Brentsville’s ball control offense kept CCHS off the field for the majority of the first half.
Culpeper took a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter as junior quarterback Eric Wilson connected with Capone Hoffman for a 39-yard touchdown pass. Brentsville answered, however, on the very next series, putting together a 12-play drive on the ground, capped off by a 8-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7. It only took D’aron Colbert one play to break that tie, scampering 48 yards for a lead that CCHS would never relinquish.

The two teams traded the ball back and forth to end the first half, but CCHS suffered a loss on the last play of the second quarter when Wilson threw an interception and then was injured attempting to make a tackle. He didn’t return after the half and the Blue Devils focused on the running game with Javae Colclough under center. “We fought through adversity tonight,” CCHS head coach Ken

Remembrance ceremony focuses on community healing By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Allie Thompson died 100 years ago Nov. 25, but at a remembrance ceremony held last Sunday, his spirit lived on inspiring the future. Thompson was the last documented African American lynched in Culpeper County on Nov. 25, 1918 and he - along with fellow lynching victims William Thompson (no relation) and William Grayson - were remembered and honored during a Remembrance and Reflection ceremony held at Culpeper Baptist Church. The event, spearheaded by Zann Nelson and a committee looking to help the community heal, started 12 years ago after Nelson researched and help write a three-piece series about Allie Thompson along with Allison Brophy Champion for the Culpeper Star-Exponent. She always dreamed of finding a way to honor Allie Thompson’s memory, and on Sunday was able to accomplish that with several members of the Thompson family in attendance. The goal was to remember the past, acknowledge the wrongs of lynching and then find common ground to move on and heal as a community. With more than 100 in attendance, of
both African American and European descent, Nelson and organizers felt as though the healing process was started. The Rev. Ludwell Brown reminded those in attendance of a old adage that he said fit well on this day. “It is mindful we remember our history,” Brown said. “If you don’t remind yourself of your history, then history has a tendency to repeat itself.” Nelson spoke, thanking the family for attending and for those who turned out to remember Allie Thompson, William Thompson and William Grayson. “I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the advice I’ve been receiving lately, to move on, to keep things quiet, don’t rock the boat, and I have a couple of thoughts to share,” Nelson said. “First, I think the boat is big enough to sustain a little rocking. Perhaps it will help us get a bit steadier on our feet.” Sandra Yates, President of the Culpeper NAACP #7058 stressed that the event was one to honor those who lost their lives so long ago. This is not a day of pointing fingers or blame, but one of remembrance and the beginning of healing and closure for the families, which

Keynote speaker Margaret Russell, a professor at Santa Clara University specializing in civil rights and Constitutional Law and a founder of the Civil Rights and Restorative Rights Project, talked about her ties to Culpeper County and why it’s important to connect the past with the present. She said growing up, when anyone asked where her family was from she answered Philadelphia, be-
cause that was where she was raised. About 10 years ago, she began researching the rest of her family history - finding out she had ancestors from Culpeper County, which put her on a path to make contact with Nelson - who helped her trace her roots back to slaves in the county. “Which is very, very powerful,” Russell said. “I think as African Americans, we have such difficult ➤ See Remembrance, Page 7

➤ Remembrance, from Page 5 times digging into our history, then when we do there is a mixture of traumatic remembering and respect for one's elders that sometimes makes it very difficult to talk about.” Sunday’s events were difficult to relive, but for Thompson descendant Kamille Gardner - it was important to remember the stories behind the faces she grew up seeing in the now iconic photograph that sat in her grandmother’s living room. “What I wanted to reflect on today was not Allie’s life in the physical sense, but how he continues to live on and inspire change,” Gardner said. She says she often look at the photo at her grandmother’s house and wonder, what were they like? “I’d see this image of this stern looking mother and her serious children and wonder what their personalities were like,” Gardner
said. “Did they laugh immediately after that photo was taken? I wonder what brought them joy and passion? Today I wonder about Allie Thompson and the kind of man he was.” Following the ceremony, Gardner reflected more on her relative - admitting she didn’t know until recently the full story of Allie Thompson’s lynching. “It’s troublesome,” Gardner said. “It’s definitely a hard thing and I can only imagine what my more immediate relatives to him must of felt at the time. I think it is good for us to come together. I’m meeting some relatives I had never met from the Thompson side before.” Bringing the painful history forward can be difficult, she said, but is even more pertinent today. “It’s critical, it’s extremely critical especially with everything happening around the U.S.,” Gardner said. “It’s critical that this is part of U.S. history that we go back and address and remember those hard moments.”

Cyclones win in thrilling fashion
➤ CCHS, from Page 4 “We weren’t expecting the unbalanced set they gave us,” Wakefield said. “They did a nice job of executing that, we made some adjustments at halftime to try to slow them down a bit.” Culpeper pulled away in the second half, as Colbert scored again on a long run - this time from 56 yards out for a 21-7 lead. Brentsville cut into the lead on the next series as Whitley scored from 16 yards out, but that was as close as the Tigers would get. Colclough scored on a 9-yard run, Jalen Veeney added a 14-yard touchdown run and the Blue Devils kicked a 24-yard field goal for the 38-13 victory. Wakefield commended his offense for adjusting in the second half as the Blue Devils relied heavily on the run - they did not attempt a pass in the second half. “Our offensive line took over, we lean heavily on those guys,” Wakefield said. Wilson was taken out of the stadium at
Eastern View High School’s Brett Leake caught a tipped pass and scored with seconds remaining in the game to propel the Cyclones to a 19-14 win at Louisa Friday night. The Cyclones, the fourth seed in Group 4A, upset the No. 1 ranked Lions - the defending VHSL 4A champions. EVHS will travel to Dinwiddie Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. halftime for evaluation and his status is uncertain for next week’s game. “With this team, it’s never about one guy,” Wakefield said. “Eric is a heck of a football player, but over the last couple of years we’ve gone through injuries. (We have) a next guy up mentality. They responded and executed in the second half.” CCHS will host Spotsylvania at 3 p.m. Nov. 23. “This year you can play at any time,” Wakefield said. “Next week, our focus now shifts and we were there last year, now let’s see if we can win the thing.”

HISTORY I am very thankful several months with my two oldest grandchildren: loving wonderful individuals who bring joy to my life. And then there was Saturday, Nov. 17 a day I have been working on for almost 13 years a short amount of time compared with the 100 years of wait for others. I am talking about the Remembrance and Reflection event for Charles Allie Thompson, his descendants and our community as well as William Thompson and William Grayson, who were also, like Allie, victims of lynching in Culpeper. It was a ceremony filled with love, respect, wonderful music and a crystal-clear dedication to Peace and Unity by all in attendance. The support for the planning was broad and the spectrum of those in attendance was astounding. It was truly a community “coming together” event. There were a couple of significant supporters who need to be
I find myself with so many things to be thankful for and wanted to share just a few of them: from the sublime to the ridiculous or at least from the amazing in a big way and the amazing in the little ways and everything in between. Before I go there, I want to acknowledge that not everyone has a good situation and we need to be mindful and as supportive as possible of their lack of family, lack of food and shelter and perhaps lack of health. Not everyone lives the Norman Rockwell vision. Share your privileges and good fortune where you can. For me, I am grateful for the connections built during the last

It was Mr. Kebede’s daughter, Laura who worked with me initially a year ago to launch this event on the 100th anniversary of Allie’s death. Laura lives in Memphis and was unable to be with us physically on Sat. though I know she was there in spirit. It I saw on the farm will take me quite some time to stop thinking about all the very special things that I witnessed that day and the encouragement I felt in my heart. For that, I am forever grateful. And on the lighter side, while I was sharing breakfast with Professor Margaret Russell, the event’s guest speaker who flew in from California to be with us, she asked about the wild animals. Among other sightings, I told her we saw the occasional bear. I assured her that these were black bears and not aggressive like the brown bear. I then headed across the yard to pull some things together in preparation to take her back to the airport. Passing the windows looking

out into the field in front of the house, what did I see? A young black bear loping down the field toward the pond. I could hardly believe my eyes and ran for the camera. I was fast but when I returned to the front porch, I could longer see him or her. Where did it go, should I run out to the fence for a better view? Of course, I should! When would I get another chance like this? I reached the fence and to my amazement, there was the little bear in the middle of the pond swimming toward the other side or at least I think that was the plan. I waited for what seemed an eternity until the bear crawled out the bank and ran quickly on the journey to the next farm. So much to be grateful for! Have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving. Until next week, be well. Zann Nelson is a researcher specializing in historical investigations, public speaker and award -winning freelance writer and columnist. The crew, however, believes the vessel to be haunted
and cursed after several mysterious deaths occur. The film was released on Christmas Eve, 1943 and did well at the box office. However, d ue to legal complications that resulted from a plagiarism suit, “The Ghost Ship” was pulled from circulation soon after its release and not shown for nearly 50 years. 35mm film print produced by the Library of Congress Film Preservation Lab in 2018, 69 min. FILM • “The Rules of the Game” (Janus, 1939) Often cited as one of the greatest films ever made, “The Rules of the Game” (“La règle du jeu”), by Jean Renoir, is a scathing critique of corrupt French society cloaked in a comedy of manners in which a weekend at a Marquis’ country château lays bare some ugly truths about a group of haut bourgeois acquaintances. The film has had a tumultuous history: it was subjected to cuts after the violent response of the premiere audience in 1939, and the original negative was destroyed during World War II; it wasn’t reconstructed until 1959. That version, which has stunned viewers for decades, is presented here. The satirical comedydrama film features an ensemble cast of Nora Gregor, Paulette Dubost, Mila Parély, Marcel Dalio, Julien Carette, Roland Toutain, Gaston Modot, Pierre Magnier and Jean Renoir himself. In French with English subtitles. 35mm film print courtesy of Janus Films, 110 min. Free, at the Library of Congress Packard Campus Theater located at 19053 Mt. Pony Rd. in Culpeper, VA. No reservations taken. CONCERT • The Rapidan

TECHNOLOGY The 800-pound gorilla is moving in Amazon finally announced their intentions on the location for their second headquarters. Shocking to no one, it will be split between New York City and Crystal City in Arlington. If you haven’t been tracking this story, let me fill you in. For a year or two now, Amazon has been “shopping around” for a second home. Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, was having cities compete against each other to become that new home with tax incentives, improvements to infrastructure, and large available talent pools. At stake was roughly $5 billion in economic investment and 50,000 high-paying corporate positions to be created by 2030. This doesn’t include potential new businesses that work in the Amazon supply chain providing other services or products. I’ve been keeping tabs on this story to see where it goes. I never had a shadow of doubt that it was coming to Northern Virginia. Amazon already has a presence in D.C. Bezos owns the Washington Post, the Amazon lobbying arm is close to the capital, the tech talent pool is deep, and Bezos bought a $23 milliondollar mansion in DC in 2016 that has major renovations going on. It just seemed cruel to make other
cities jump thru those hoops when they never had a shot. But with the announcement on November 13th of the two new locations, what do I expect we’ll see in coming years? In a nutshell here are the items that have been announced: The average salary is expected to be $150,000. The median wage has not been announced. The State of Virginia has pledged $295 million of non-general funds to work on transportation projects such as: new metro stations, connector bridge from Crystal City to National Airport, and improvements to Route 1. Virginia Tech will establish a new campus in Alexandria. There are some potential downsides as well, including a spike in real estate prices. Housing brokerage firm Redfin announced over a 200% spike in home searches for the Crystal City area the day that the Amazon announcement was made. This has made some residents concerned that the creation of a second Silicon Valley in the DMV will make housing completely unaffordable. The state transportation authorities need to get a quick jump on the on the new projects. We all know how bad the traffic is in Northern Virginia and bringing in a company like Amazon is going to exacerbate the problem. These

just been a really good spark,” James said. The video has been viewed more than 16,500 times already on Facebook and James said he hopes it helps increase donations to the Blue and Red Santa Project. “I get emails every day from people saying ‘I saw your video, it was awesome,’” James said. “It’s been a blast. Everybody is having fun and being more creative in general.” The video can be viewed at: www. facebook.com/165049480188286/ posts/2555799637779913/ Donations can be made by visiting www.facebook.com/blueandredsantaproject/, calling 540829-5517 or 540-825-8777 or by mailing contributions to The Blue and Red Santa Project, P O Box 579, Culpeper, VA 22701.

writing so I came up with a draft in about 10 minutes,” Hickling said. He hadn’t actually watched an episode of Cops until coming up with the concept, but he immersed himself in highlights and episodes from the show to hit all the beats. The Grinch’s face is blurred out, the officers are taped interviewing the victims and the video even includes a ride along wrap up with Officer Minor. That whole section of the video was improvised, James said. The project was part of a new social and digital service that Xpress is offering with marketing packages available for small businesses. “That was actually our plan before this all came about, this has
projects need to be fast tracked. I would urge a county like Culpeper to explore what it would take to get Virginia Railway Express (VRE) extended down from Manassas to Culpeper. I personally know several people that already commute into Washington that drive to Manassas to catch The VRE and then jump on Metro. I see it very feasible that the influx of new high paying jobs in Northern Virginia would make Culpeper a very attractive place to live and raise a family, but they would absolutely need a simplified commute option. There have been many questions on some of Amazon’s personnel practices within their major
warehouses, which is a story for another time. But one thing I will always give Jeff Bezos credit for was his ability to delay gratification when Amazon was beginning to make a name for itself. When Wall Street was begging for better returns in the earlier years, he kept heavily investing back into the company. Now that discipline has paid off with Amazon expected to take almost 50% of all U.S. online sales by the end of the year and created a cloud infrastructure that is 31% in the global market place. If that type of investment is made in the communities and workforce, everyone should come out on top. Happy Thanksgiving!

The video was produced by Tim Hickling and was made to help promote the Blue and Red Santa Project.

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer More than 500 people participated in the Girls on the Run Piedmont 5K Sunday, Nov. 18. Started in 2013, the Piedmont chapter of Girls on the Run has grown to include 262 girls and 84 coaches from Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison and Rappahannock counties. The program combines athletic ability with life skills the young girls will use later in life. “They’re learning these skills, how to set boundaries, how to deal with negative self talk, it’s definitely critical skills these girls need,” Kathy Butler, Council Director of Girls on the Run Piedmont. Girls on the Run Piedmont is in eight of the 10 Culpeper County Schools, and Culpeper County has between 150-160 girls participating in the program. While Fauquier is the largest county in terms of size, Butler said, Culpeper has the most girls
in the program. With the program celebrating its fifth birthday, Butler said that participation is not the only aspect growing. She pointed to the number of volunteers helping Sunday. “I’ve just been floored by how many people we’ve had come out to do it,” Butler said. “We’re grateful the police departments come out, they’re always grateful to us. Hopefully we can keep some kids out of trouble in the future.” Culpeper Town Police Officer Jason Smith ran along with the girls, wearing a pink tutu. “We like to get involved with the community a lot,” Smith said. “We like to try to prevent versus the alternative. If there are any kids who want to get involved with this program or other programs we have, we’re around to do that.” Butler said she hopes Girls on the Run Piedmont continues to grow. “Ideally I want to be in every school in all four counties and available to any girl who wants to (join),” Butler said.
