The annual Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Culpeper National Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 30. Jointly sponsored by VFW Post 2524, American Legion Post 330, and the staff of Culpeper National Cemetery, these occasions are always moving tributes to the members of America's military. Music will be provided by the Culpeper County High School band under the director of Mr. Duane Clore. The keynote speaker is Rev. Sanford Reaves, Jr. of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Locust Grove who is also president of the Culpeper Branch NAACP. Ms. Mary Elder, director of training and workforce development for the National Cemetery Administration, will also speak. An informal reception hosted by the Heritage Girls will be held immediately after the ceremony at the VFW Post 2524 post home on Sperryville Pike.

Town Offices will be closed Monday, May 30, 2016 in observance of Memorial Day. As you drive down South Main Street near the 7-11, the splash of color that is created by the flowers of the Shenandoah Garden Spot immediately grabs your attention. The selection there is always so well kept and visually appealing. For the last two years Kori Phelps has been a big reason that everything looks so nice. Losing a treasure FROM WHERE I SIT

Words have power and can hit you with all the force of a knockout punch. Production day at the newspaper is frenzied at best as a deadline looms and your eyes are ever fixed on the clock. So, when the press release hit my computer about an airplane crash in Orange County I scanned it quickly and then my eyes gazed on one of the fatalities - John Joseph Quinn, Jr. That can’t be JJ Quinn. I had just seen him fairly recently. He had popped in the office with some aerial photos that he had taken of the new hangars at the airport. I’d also seen him just a few weeks ago at a new gathering at Reformation Lutheran Church started by Al Aitken and Pastor Brad Hales. I choked up and then shouted out to our graphic designer, Jeff Say. It’s JJ. He’s died in a plane crash. Disbelief quickly turned to reality. The sun was shining outside but our souls and spirits took a hit as we scrambled to continue the business of getting a paper out with the news that one of our favorite folks would no longer grace our offices. Named Virginia’s AFMA (Angel Flight MidAtlantic) 2015 Pilot of the Year, J.J. had a large fan base including Lynn and Tom Neviaser. I can remember attending several gatherings of the Founding Fathers Republican Women. Lynn would sing his praises and often family members would attend to attest to J.J.’s care as he piloted loved ones for cancer treatments in

I worked closely with JJ to raise funds for his beloved Angel Flight. He gave his all to those whom he served, not just by flying them to places of hope, but by ministering to them also. All who spent time with him loved him dearly and cherished his friendship." According to the Virginia State Police report, they were notified Tuesday afternoon of a plane crash in the the 1,000 block of Tinder Lane in Orange County. The plane was a 2007 Jihlavan KP 5 ASA, fixed-wing, single-engine aircraft, and was classified as experimental. There were two confirmed fatalities: the pilot, Charles Neal Caldwell, 57, of Apopka, Fla., and passenger as John Joseph Quinn Jr., 81, of Culpeper, Va. On-site manager at Culpeper Regional Airport Tanya Woodward sent me her comments reflecting on a life now lost but one always remembered. “It is with great sadness that I share with everyone the passing of J.J. Quinn, Tuesday, May 24th, in a small plane crash in Orange County. J.J. was a true ambassador of our airport and aviation as a whole. He volunteered with numerous aviation groups including Angel Flight, Patient Airlift Services, Pilots for PAWS, NBAA, NATA ➤ See JJ, Page 5

J.J. will always be considered as one of our Founding Fathers here at CJR as his 90 unit t-hangar complex was the push-start that the airport needed to be on its way. For many years he has flight instructed with White Hawk Aviation, continued his aerial photography business and reignited his love of ham radio. As can be echoed by many of you, J.J. will be truly missed as he is and always will be a friend and mentor. J.J. has immortalized himself here at the airport with the t-hangar complex and the wonderful individuals that he attracted to the airport,” said Tanya. Mike Dale, a fellow pilot, supporter of the airport and instrumental in the success of the annual Culpeper AirFest was likewise sick at heart. “JJ was a consummate gentleman. A wonderful friend, kind, generous and warm hearted. His enthusiasm for aviation touched everyone around him and had not abated with age. I flew several check flights with him over the years and, while his approach was typically low key, his disciplines in the air soon challenged you to use every aspect of your aircraft's performance and made you hone your skills,” said Dale, adding, “His work with Angel Flight and other volunteer organisations brought well deserved national recognition and, not surprisingly, it was JJ who volunteered to fly Mike Ginter and I out to persuade the DAV to let us use their name to dedicate the Potomac Flight. He was always ready to help.It was JJ who had the courage to build the first set of hangars at CJR when no one else thought they were viable. When the County asked him to sell them back to the county he agreed instantly with all the grace that was such a strong characteristic of his life. Life was always about other people, not him, and this will live in the memory of everyone who ever knew JJ.” “The last entry in my logbook written by JJ was 3/31/16. I shall always cherish that last flight with him,” said a saddened Dale. “Culpeper has lost a treasure beyond replacement.” Frankie Gilmore has known JJ for years. He always had a smile on his face and he always asked 'what can I do for you.' He did so much for the Soap Box Derby that people aren't aware of. He touched so many lives with Angel Flight. It's such a tragic loss, it's going to leave a void." Al Aitken, another fellow pilot, knows that flying is not without risk. “It appears JJ went flying with someone at the Culpeper airport to help him learn about his new airplane he had just bought. JJ was like that... always helping out others... even inexperienced pilots,” said Aitken who speculated that perhaps a mechanical problem brought them closer to the ground. “An NTSB investigation is underway. We

won’t know for a while,” said Aitken. “We’re all so sad.” Aitken shared an old adage in the flying community..."Flying is not inherently dangerous...but it is totally unforgiving of the tiniest mistake." JJ received his wings in 1957 as a flight student for the US Navy. He served as a pilot flying with VP-11 Squadron in Brunswick, Maine flying P2V Neptunes and with the Navy six fleet in Malta and Rota, Spain. He later served as a flight instructor in T28s at Pensacola, Florida until 1962. Sadness, that’s the powerful word on this Wednesday as I pen these words. Sadness and yet a good feeling if that’s possible knowing that he died doing what he did best - serving others in the sky.

Stohlman to retire The Culpeper Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors announced Tuesday that Debbie Stohlman, President/CEO, will be retiring effective August 31, 2016. Ms. Stohlman has been with the organization since August 2009 when she began her career as Operations Manager. She was promoted to her current position in August 2014. “Debbie is a wellrespected leader in Culpeper’s business community. She is a champion for our business members specifically and the business Debbie Stohlman community at large. She has created invaluable connections to education and government in the region. We are very sorry to see Debbie leave and wish her all the best in retirement. We have certainly benefited from her vision and leadership,” said Ken Greenfield, 2016 Board Chairman. Ahmed named 2015 Physician of the Year Dr. Mirza Ahmed, a hospitalist with Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center, has been named the facility’s 2015 Physician of the Year. The award recognizes Ahmed’s bedside manner with patients, as well as his positive interactions with his colleagues. As a hospitalist, Ahmed specializes in the care of patients in the hospital. “I am very thankful for all who nominated me for this award,” Ahmed said. “It was very rewarding and it gave me positive reinforcement to continue to work hard. My goal is to make sure all of my patients receive the best possible care.”

Culpeper Medical Center has given out the Physician of the Year award annually since 1989. Each year, hospital team members and physician offices are encouraged to nominate doctors who create a positive work environment and exemplify a commitment to patient care. A selection committee comprised of past Physician of the Year winners decides the winner. Ahmed was selected from 11 nominees in 2015. “The Physician of the Year award was started to recognize a physician on the medical staff who had provided outstanding care and service to the hospital and community over the previous year,” said Dr. Tom Reynolds, chief medical officer of Culpeper Medical Center. “Dr. Ahmed is an outstanding hospitalist. We’re very happy that he is part of our medical staff.” Ahmed has been a hospitalist at Culpeper Medical Center for two years. It is his first position following his

medical residency at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio.

“It’s somewhere between a barbershop and a salon,” says Alex Faulds about what you’ll find at Supercuts which specializes in high-quality haircare services at reasonable rates. Faulds, along with his wife Jodie, are on a new business venture - owning their first franchise. So far, it’s going well. “We felt it was a good way to go,” says Faulds who spent more than two decades in the insurance business before deciding to become a franchise owner joining more than 2,400 locations nationwide including Canada and Puerto Rico. Targeting primarily a male audience, Supercuts caters to guys who have little tolerance for a long wait but want a classy cut at an affordable price. Faulds demonstrated their app which lets you check on the nearest location for a Supercuts and

how long your wait will be. You can also add your name to the list so by the time you arrive, you’re set to go. It’s all about convenience. “We liked the idea of a service oriented business...one that is solid and has good value recognition,” says Faulds who chose Culpeper for its family friendly feel. “Unlike more populated areas, Culpeper feels like it’s a true community,” says Faulds who wants to build on customer loyalty with plenty of repeat clients. Originally from New England, the Faulds have called Virginia home for nearly 20 years. Opening their business in Culpeper felt right from the start. “We’ve been impressed with everyone that we’ve worked with to get the place open,” says Faulds who has six employees on staff. “We hired all local...we want them to stay.” “We’ve been averaging about 200 customers a week,” says Faulds, “with busy weekend volume.” Located at 563 James Madison

It was all good karma for one Culpeper resident. Tammy Hartman entered her name in their drawing box and was chosen to receive free haircuts for a year. That came after her decision to donate her hair to the Locks for Love nonprofit charity. “Based on that success, we’re going to continue offering this program,” says Faulds, “and you can put your name in the drawing box even if you don’t get a haircut.” Faulds smiles. Having a passion for nature can be rewarding in many ways, but now scientists studying the relatively new discipline of “environmental psychology” (aka “ecopsychology”) are finding that being out in nature has real

health benefits. As an article in the June issue of “University of California, Berkeley, Wellness Letter” puts it, nature offers “medicine for the mind.” The article cites studies that show that “green exercise” — just walking in nature — can give people “increased vitality (physical and mental energy) and a greater sense of well-being” over walking inside. Walking through forests, according to some researchers, can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure and heart rate and improve immune function for hours, or even

days. Ever have a sense of awe when viewing some sweeping landscape, or just seeing a bear going about its business? That awe that nature inspires can make us feel part of something bigger, says the article. Or, according to the University of Minnesota (UM) website that awe gives us a sense of “meaningfulness.” For me, it doesn’t take a view of the Grand Canyon to put me in awe of nature. Just finding the brightly colored millipede I featured in my last column, or a somewhat water-soaked, flowerlike mushroom growing in the yard — or mantis nymphs emerging from their egg sac — brought an involuntary “wow!” from my mouth. Research indicates that experiencing nature may lower levels of chemicals that affect systemic inflammation, reduce muscle tension and the production of stress hormones, increase the attention span of children with ADHD and, as the UM website put it, “may even reduce mortality” from some diseases or conditions. Researchers studying dementia

have also found that access to nature can “play a key role in restoring a sense of purpose, unlocking memories from the past, bringing meaning to patients’ experiences and providing a calming affect for people living with dementia,” according to an article on the UK National Health Service website. Nature can improve cognitive function in young people, too. A study about creativity in the wild, published in the journal “Plos”, found that several days of immersion in nature, and the corresponding disconnection from multimedia and technology, increased performance on a creativity, problem-solving task “by a full 50 percent” in a group of young adults. Pointing to new research, Richard Louv, author “Last Child in the Woods,” said in an interview for National Geographic that nature is a “good antidote” for depression, ADD, physical health, child obesity and the epidemic of inactivity. Nature can also distract us from our pain and discomfort, as I’ve found in my own experience battling

fibromyalgia and arthritis, both of which can make it hard for me to get out of bed some days. But I’ve learned that just a short walk in the woods that surrounds my house in the morning, or when I start to lag during the afternoon, can ease pain and clear the brain fog I often experience, enabling me to on with my work and enjoy my life. So next time you think you have too much to do, are feeling lousy or just don’t seem to have the energy to drag your butt off the couch, think about taking a dose of “ecotherapy.” If you’re new to experiencing the glory of the outdoors and leery of its challenges (rugged terrain, rashcausing plants, biting insects or larger, fearsome-looking critters, etc.) — or want to deepen your knowledge and appreciation of nature — take advantage of the many guided nature walks and other activities regularly offered nearby. May celebrates older Americans: Let’s start to embrace aging Disrupt Aging. Turn back the clock on aging. Delay aging. These have become commonplace headlines in the media and product advertisements, shouting at us to do something before it’s too late. Frankly, I find this disturbing. Is it really that terrible to grow older? Does it have to be that terrible to grow older? 10,000 people daily are turning 65 – a trend that is expected to continue for the next

decade. Technology to help us remain healthy, to have global connections, to learn more and learn faster is growing at a tremendous rate. People are retiring with decades more time to enjoy leisure, start an encore career or even a whole new business. Isn’t this exciting? What are we afraid of? Yes it’s true that as the population increases and people live longer the rate of Alzheimer’s and dementia is growing. And older bodies don’t always move the same way or at the same rate as earlier in our lives. Research has shown that our brains don’t work as quickly as when we were younger, but they do work deeper because of the knowledge

we have acquired. Let’s start to embrace aging. If it is something that we value and we look forward to then this change in attitude will change how we respond. Because what we think about something drives how we act. If growing older is celebrated as an accomplishment - if every major decade birthday card had congratulations rather than some joke or insult about growing older - what would we do differently? Would we fuel ourselves better with good food and healthy exercise? Would we incorporate older people into our daily activities? Would our land planning, economic development planning and business

planning anticipate the needs of people from birth to 100 plus? May is Older Americans month. I challenge you to rethink aging. Celebrate it. If there’s something that’s not working for you about aging, change it. When you see people denying aging, call it out. Whether it’s an ad in the media, a stereotype being perpetuated, a policy that creates a barrier – call it out. Then keep on going, sharing the fun and the joy and the opportunity that comes from aging together.

Bridge provides social connections, lots of fun at The Culpeper By Ann Lovell

Jean Isaacson, 72, was disappointed there wasn’t a bridge club at The Culpeper, the LifeSpire of Virginia continuing care retirement community where she’s lived since 2013. An accountant who had started her own business in 1980, Isaacson learned to play bridge as a teen and taught the game when she lived in Chicago from 1972-1975. Then she met Lila Bunt, 89, another avid bridge player who has lived at The Culpeper since 2011. “Lila and I were walking from ‘the big house’ (the building that houses the dining room and community center) to our cottages,” Isaacson recalls. “I told her how I wished we had a bridge club. ‘Let’s start one!’ Lila said. So we did.” Bunt laughs. “Two heads plus a need equals a bridge club,” she says. The two women started the club with one table in 2013. Then, they asked Pat Ballard, The Culpeper’s Director of Resident Services, to add it to the The Culpeper’s activities’ calendar each month. Soon Bunt and Isaacson were offering weekly classes to those interested in learning the game. Eight players joined a cruise the group took in early 2015, and today the group has grown to 14. “We need two more players to have four tables,” Isaacson says. Isaacson and Bunt are two of LifeSpire’s featured trailblazers during Older Americans Month in May. The U.S. Administration for Community Living sets aside May each year to recognize the contributions of older Americans. The 2016 theme is “Blaze a Trail.” Ballard recommended the two women for their initiative in starting the bridge club. “LifeSpire trailblazers model wellness, community, and hospitality,” agrees Jonathan Cook, LifeSpire President and CEO. “By starting the bridge club, Mrs. Isaacson and Mrs. Bunt showed the kind of community spirit we appreciate from all our residents.” Mental Gymnastics Bridge evolved from the British card game whist and dates back to the 1700s. In 1925 railroad heir Harold Stirling Vanderbilt created the modern version of contract bridge, the version The Culpeper club plays. According to David Owen of The New Yorker, Vanderbilt “had been annoyed by what he felt were deficiencies in the previous version, auction bridge.” Contract bridge caught on quickly, especially as the Great Depression

Today, an estimated 25 million Americans enjoy bridge, including such notables as Warren Buffet and Bill Gates, who often play as a team. The majority of bridge players are over age 50, says Jon Saraceno in an article for AARP. “Bridge’s intricacies make it particularly appealing for those who want to sharpen acuity with mental gymnastics,” Saraceno writes. “A study in 2000 at the University of California Berkeley, found strong evidence that an area in the brain used in playing bridge stimulates the immune system. Researchers suggest that is because players must use memory, visualization and sequencing.” Additional research by Dr. Claudia Kawas of the University of California Irvine, seems to indicate bridge, with its added social element, may have a slight edge over other mental games in staving off dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. “We think, for example, that it’s very important to use your brain, to keep challenging your mind, but all mental activities may not be equal,” Kawas says. “We’re seeing some evidence that a social component may be crucial.” A Rewarding Pursuit Isaacson and Bunt carve out lots of time each week for bridge. The two

women teach bridge on Wednesdays, developing lessons based on the book, “The Fun Way to Advanced Bridge” by Harry Lampert. “Many of those who come last played in college,” Bunt says. “It’s a great way to welcome new residents to the community.” The group plays together at The Culpeper on Fridays. Isaacson plays with a group at her home on Saturdays, and Bunt and her husband, John, play Tuesday evenings at the local country club with people from the greater Culpeper community. When they aren’t playing bridge, the two women are also involved in other activities in their community. Bunt and her husband regularly work in the food pantry at their local church, St. Stephen's Episcopal in downtown Culpeper. Isaacson reads to an older friend, plays rummy with older residents, and enjoys caring for her granddaughter one day a week. Still, bridge has provided a strong bond between the two women and allowed them to forge friendships with other residents as well. “It’s very rewarding,” Bunt says. “It keeps us busy and provides a lot of good laughs.” Ann Lovell is Corporate Director of Communications for LifeSpire of Virginia, formerly Virginia Baptist Homes. Deputy at home in the classroom He grew up on his grandfather’s farm off Scott’s Mill Road learning the lessons of another era -- lugging spring water up to the house, daily farm chores, and the thrifty life of a family of six siblings. His mother and father lived on his grandfather’s 45-acre farm amidst six gardens, pigs and whatever else the family needed to make a living from the land. In the process Melvin White learned the value of work, a love of sports, a thirst for knowledge and perhaps most importantly, empathy for struggling children. The latter lesson came later but the seeds were planted early. “My parents were great,” he said. “Me and my dad were the best of friends,” he said. And, it is evident White reveres his grandfather. But it wasn’t until his daughter Melody was born that the linebacker-sized deputy fully appreciated the advantages his family life gave him, the same advantages he was deter-

White played baseball for Culpeper High School. In 1985 he obtained a certificate in the building trades and went off to work in the construction industry: first with well-known builder Bruce Tibbetts, then with his father’s company Melvin D. White & Sons, and finally with a building supply company. He had friends

who worked in the Fairfax Sheriff’s Office who told him about working for a sheriff’s office. In 2008 he decided to give it a try and worked in the Fairfax Sheriff’s Office until last year when Culpeper Sheriff Scott Jenkins talked to him. “I’ve known Scott Jenkins forever,” White said. “He knew I loved working with kids,” said White, who coaches little league softball. So, when Jenkins asked White to come to the Culpeper Sheriff’s Office in 2015, “I didn’t even need to think about it,” White said. Now he is the School Resource Officer for Emerald Hill on a personal mission to help children no matter their circumstances. “We're really lucky to have someone like Melvin working with our kids in the schools,” Jenkins said. “They love him at the school,” one fellow officer said about Deputy White. And the big burly deputy exudes the same sentiment according to all who see him in action at Em-

erald Hill. “Everything I do, I do for my family,” he said regarding his life story. And he credits anything good in his life to his faith in Christ, being as he puts it, “25 years saved.” “I've known Melvin and his family most of my life and you won't find more genuine and caring wonderful people. I'm proud to consider Melvin part of my extended family and we are so fortunate to have him in our schools,” Jenkins said.

Protesters march in support of CCHS students suspended due to ‘misconduct’ ➤ Parents, supporters allege punishment too harsh for student athletes By Jeff Say TIMES STAFF

More than two dozen protesters peacefully marched outside Culpeper County Public School’s Central

Office Wednesday afternoon. They sported signs that read “Educate Don’t Eliminate” and “Students Have Rights Too.” They gathered in support of 12 Culpeper County High School students allegedly suspended for 364 days for misconduct. According to group spokesperson Traci Johnson, the 12 students - three members of the varsity baseball team and nine members of varsity football - were suspended for “alleged horseplay and inappropriateness in the locker room.” “It’s been admitted by the administration that it’s a cultural issue

for the past several years,” Johnson said. “Accusations against these kids were from two seasons ago and they have just been brought to light this year.” According to Johnson, the student-athletes received a 10-day suspension from CCHS and then were suspended for 364 days by the administration. “We feel this is unacceptable and they should be educated rather than be sent out of school for 364 days,” Johnson said. In a press release issued by the school district earlier this month, the school division said that CCHS administration was made “aware of allegations of misconduct involving some of its student-athletes. Thereafter, school administration initiated an investigation, which continues, into the alleged conduct and that investigation has resulted in the initiation of disciplinary action against 12 student-athletes. “Because student disciplinary proceedings are pending, and to safeguard student privacy, the division cannot and will not comment more specifically about those disciplinary actions or the nature of the alleged conduct,” the release said. “As is its practice, Administration is in the process of reviewing its existing policies and procedures to

determine if any changes should be considered regarding the administration of school athletic programs.” The school division had no comment on Wednesday’s protest. Reportedly the misconduct included roughhousing in the locker room. Johnson, whose sons are friends with students who were suspended, said that her sons have been upset and affected by what has happened. Johnson admitted that the group doesn’t know all the facts, so she admitted there may be instances where the 364 day suspension was warranted, but she “just doesn’t see that.” “You can’t just throw the book at them,” she said. “If there was inappropriateness there needs to be counseling.” Johnson also pointed out that to her knowledge, no criminal charges were filed. According to the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office there was no formal investigation and no charges were filed. The CCSO reached out to all families involved and none elected to press charges. OBITUARIES Richard Frank Serene Richard “Frank” Serene passed away on May 17, 2016, at the age of 67 in Warrenton, Virginia. Frank was born on April 20, 1949 in Kittanning, Pennsylvania to Frank Arthur Serene and Betty (Simpson) Serene. Frank is survived by his wife Gale (Dusenberry) Serene; his three children; son, Andrew Serene, his wife Sara and two children Ryne and Georgia; son, Joshua Serene; and daughter, Morgan Little and her husband Shaun. He is also survived by his sister Jeanne Cobert and her husband, Sam, and their children Thomas, Paul and Katie. His occupation was Chief Estimator for Resurface, Inc. Frank graduated from James Madison University in 1974 and moved to Warrenton with his family in 1982. He dedicated his time to helping the community and had a passion for teaching. He was a long time volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America and Fauquier Lions Club and was a member of Warrenton United Methodist Church. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday May 26, 2016, 4 p.m. at Warrenton United Methodist Church (341 Church St., Warrenton, Virginia 20186). In the end, the group would like to see the school division reverse its decision. “I don’t think these boys did anything that warranted the punishment they are getting,” Johnson said. Johnson confirmed that one student athlete in particular lost a scholarship to Cornell University and others were unable to graduate because of the suspension. Others that were suspended are looking to move out of state to continue their education because of the incident. Johnson said the families that are able to have retained an attorney but said she was unaware of what legal action may be taken. “I know they want to meet with the school board and the administration, with their attorneys and have an open dialog,” Johnson said. Those meetings have not been held yet and Johnson was unaware if and when they would take place. Nonetheless, the punishment handed down is too severe the group believes. “They should be punished for what they did commit, but children make mistakes and they should be given an opportunity to learn from that mistake,” Johnson said.

Stop and smell the roses ... your nose is not broken JEFFERY MITCHELL

Your nose needs an exercise plan. You think that I am joking? It’s not just for dogs – you can train your nose to smell better. Try it for a week and see if the world does not change for you. Developing a better sense of smell and taste is reliant on your willingness to investigate (through aromas) the world around you. Slow down, smell the details and you can pick up all sorts of new (subtle) aromas. Aromas that you may have thought were as simple as fresh cut grass. Mowing the grass is an easy place to start. Break down individual grass aromas in a lawn. Onion grass is a giveaway aroma, but find some of the other varieties and pull them apart – smell them one at a time smashed into your fingers. Dandelion, crabgrass, chamomile and clover are each different. Wet steel, gasoline exhaust, hot motor oil and lubricating grease also have distinct smells that help build that fresh cut grass smell. You can do this smelling workout anywhere or time. Smell your shoe soles or your keyboard. Is that too weird? Ok, move your exercise plan into the kitchen and smell each ingredient before you use it. Have you ever smelled raw egg after cracking it? Try it and then smell the same egg fried, hot, and about to be plated. Found some new aromas, right? Try the same with flour, olive oil and salt. Use caution when smelling the pepper. This process of olfactory discovery is not unique as wine geeks love to talk about “terroir,” or the “sense of place,” that comes from smelling and tasting a particular wine. For instance, wines sourced from the volcanic soils of Italy’s Mt. Etna do have pronounced volcanic rock notes. There is a true sense of place in a well-crafted wine, but it takes time to align those

sensations with an established wine lexicon library. For example how many wines have you tasted that are “Foxy” (a word used to describe musky animal smell in wine)? When it comes to a true sense of place – cheese wins with more natural descriptors and connections. “It smells like cheese,” means different things to different people. For some, that’s a deep breath of heaven. For others it is a nasty nasal assault. Natural cheese aromas are complex. For starters, consider that milk contains elements of the plants “harvested” by a ruminant (sheep, goat, cow). Add in a myriad of other environmental factors, like natural caves, mold spores, weather impacts, wooden shelves and the natural development can take on a wild number of aromas. Where it gets fascinating is when we take the time to smell and appreciate the individual aromas in one piece of natural cheese. Slow down and smell your cheese to give your olfactory senses a workout. Blurt out the words you associate with that.

Culpeper County High School held their convocation ceremony last Thursday. Culpeper Times recognized a male and female Athlete of the Year. A star on two fields, Sarah Reed (top) took home honors excelling in lacrosse and field hockey. She also does a mean squat in the weight room. Sarah will head to Shenandoah University in the fall. A leader on the basketball court, the Male Athlete of the Year went to Luther Gibbs (bottom) who earned high marks from his coach as a young man who is strong academically as well as in sports. At Eastern View High School's convocation ceremony held May 18, the Culpeper Times recognized their selections for Athletes of the Year. Choices reflect a student-athlete in good standing academically and who participated in one or more sports. Annie Boone (top left) was awarded Female Athlete of the Year for her dedication to swimming. As Greg Harpine mentioned when he heard the news, "she was born to be in the water." As Boone heads to Auburn University, it's more than likely that we'll see her name heading to the Olympic games. She's already done some qualifying runs. Garnering the Male Athlete of the Year is Bret Shurina (bottom left) who excelled on the football field as well as one of the school's top grapplers. He started his wrestling career as a young Culpeper Cobra before taking to the mats as a Cyclone. Bret plans to attend Coker College in South Carolina. Coincidentally their mascot is a Cobra.

hen we think of taking our pets to the veterinarian we often picture a busy place, with a lot of animals and activity. At Animals First Veterinary Service we have crafted our practice to allow for the comfort of our patients both when they come visit us in our home office or when we visit them in their own homes! Our office is designed with their comfort in mind. Appointments are spread out once per hour, the exam room has a big soft dog bed to lounge on and our table, for smaller animals, is covered in soft bath towels. It also helps that we stock our reception area, exam rooms, and our pockets with healthy treats for both cats and dogs. For those who prefer not to travel, our practice is completely mobile and can be brought right to your front door. In the not so distant past, a house call was a typical practice for pets and people a like. As our lives got increasingly busy, and more impersonal, house calls became a thing of the past and fell out of favor. A doctor’s visit went from a visit with a family friend, to a visit with a physician to whom you were just a number or a lab result. With house calls, our practice brings back the individualized care that our pets thrive on. House calls allow your pets to have a good physical exam and diagnosis in the comfort and quiet of their own home. One of our patients who excels with a house call approach is Dakota. Dakota, a 150+ pound Alaskan Malamute, is a perfect example of our ideal house call patient. Due to hindquarter pain and weakness, he was having trouble getting in and out of vehicles. When we first met him, he was quite wary of us and protective of his body and his space. Evaluation of his gait and palpation of his limbs indicated that his hips and lower back caused him pain. His treatment centers around acupuncture, and now he is greatly improved. When we arrive to treat him, he comes over to us wagging his tail and walks right to his favorite acupuncture spot. Our practice is located in Rixeyville — 20 minutes from Culpeper, Rappahannock and Fauquier. This makes it easy for us to reach your home for a house call and is convenient for those clients who would like to visit our office.
