Not long ago we were having a yard sale and this couple wandered in. I struck up a conversation with them and learned some interesting things. First, their names are Mike and Kitty... that is it! Second, they have been married for 55 years. In this day and age that is an outstanding accomplishment. In talking with them I learned that she was 15 and he was 17 when they got married.15! He said he would do it all again and that he loved each one of the 55 years. Nice! ➤ Check out Rich’s blog at facesofculpeperva.blogspot.com and Faces of Culpeper on Facebook

From the Red Cross to retailer: La Bee Da Loca opens downtown By Anita L. Sherman STAFF WRITER
For those who know Felecia Chavez, there are certain words that always come to mind to describe her - service, compassion, gentleness, serenity and quiet energy. Until recently, you’d hear of her in passing as she often spent months away in distant lands caring for others. For 30 years, Felecia served with the American Red Cross and the last years had her in Bagram, Afghanistan. Now, able to put that part of her history to rest, she is free to create a retail recipe that has always been in her heart
and mind. “I’ve always wanted to do this but we were never in a place to make it happen until now,” says Chavez who sees the opening of La Bee da Loca as a long fulfilled dream. “This is something that I’ve needed to do...not just for me...but as a legacy for my children and their children.” More than a retail shop, Chavez wants it to be an educational experience when you walk through the doors. “We need to take care of Mother Earth,” says Chavez, “and bees are an important part of that...they’re dying off whether from disease or other things but we need to sustain them.” To bring that fact home for her customers, Chavez has a working hive - enclosed in glass - for observation in the upstairs section of her shop. There you can try to spot the queen bee - she’s larger than the rest and has a white spot painted on her back. She’s clearly the matriarch orchestrating the intricate dance of her drones and workers as they create honey from pollen. A tunnel connected to the hive and extending outside allows them to go in and out freely. When you walk into Felecia’s shop, various aromas will cause you to smile - rosemary, mint, lavender, and lemon. They come from body mists, soaps, and candles that she also carries from friendly sourced companies that she’s researched for their commitment to things natural and worth preserving and sharing. On the day of this interview, Lt. Lee Rees from the Culpeper Town Police Department, stopped in to see the new shop. “I’m excited to see the final product,” ➤ See Bee, Page 5

Many honeys line the shelves at La Bee da Loca and you’re sure to go crazy over their taste and pure quality. ➤ Bee, from Page 4 said Rees who has known Felecia for many years. “Add about 1/8 teaspoon each day to your food,” says Felecia, “as she wraps up a small jar of bee pollen.” Raw honey and bee pollen are the buzz these days for those suffering from allergies. For many, these products have proven to be healthy alternative. Felecia laughs. “I’m new to this retail business and learning,” she says freely admitting that she’ll gladly hand out a honey stick to a curious child that visits the store. Lining the counter are several flavored honeys - ginger and orange - looking like brightly colored straws. Snip off one end with your teeth and the succulent honey will glide down your throat...a real sweet treat. On another occasion, Felecia was in the store one evening when a man visiting the town had purchased a loaf of bread from Moving Meadows. He was staying in a nearby bed and breakfast. He popped into her shop and thought a jar of honey would be the perfect partner but he lacked cash and her credit card machine wasn’t set up yet. She gladly gave him the honey and said, “Welcome to Culpeper.” “I came to the store and found an envelope with money inside for the honey,” says Chavez and kind and unbelieving words from the visitor who hadn’t encountered that kind of hospitality. “I’m the crazy queen
bee,” chuckles Chavez who envisions storytimes in the upper floor where children can learn about bees. A large cushioned hivelike structure is perfect for young toddlers to climb inside. “One actually feel asleep in there,” says Chavez, “they can experience what it’s like to be in a hive.” Recycled glasses and vases from Spain are etched with small bees. Colorful rugs grace the floors. Lacy curtains hang from the windows. Felecia has created a comfortable ambiance for her bee business. There are times that her smile is tinged with sadness that her sister, Cindy, was not able to see the shop. Nine years her senior, Cindy died suddenly on Good Friday. “She always told me that I’d make a great beekeeper,” says Chavez, “and she encouraged and supported me all the way...she planned to be here for the grand opening...but she is here in spirit...she’s with me.” “Bees are the sunshine of my soul,” says Chavez. “I’m going to be here for a long time.”

Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby set for June 11-12 By Jeff Say
CULPEPER TIMES STAFF WRITER
Racers in the annual Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby are ready to roll. More than 120 drivers will compete in the 14th annual derby June 11-12. “The Annual Derby is the culmination of a full season of hard work by the driver, their family and many volunteers,” race director Frankie Gilmore said. “These drivers have been working on their cars, fine tuning and test runs all Spring. During the Derby, the public is on hand, lots of festivities and fun for everyone. It's the big race!” According to Gilmore there are 41 racers scheduled for the stock race, 53 for super stock, eight for the masters and eight for the Super Kids race. The Super Kids race allows children with disabilities to go down the hill with another driver. The winner of the Super Kids race also gets to race at the World Championships in Akron, Ohio. Winners of the three derby divisions - stock, super stock and mas-
ters - will represent the Piedmont area at the World Championships in Akron, Ohio July 16. Four drivers from the Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby have won world championships - Brandon Feagan (2008), Sean Brown (2010), Gabrielle Beville (2011) and Mason Breeden (2014). Gilmore said that the weekend is a culmination of work between family, local businesses and the drivers. “Without the help and support from our Trophy Owners, Sponsors and Partnerships, the Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby would not exist,” Gilmore said. “We are completely dependent on volunteers and financial support from our generous donors! "Whether it be a business or organization that purchases a car kit for our children to drive during the derby, or donate funds and/or items to help throughout the race season - all donations are needed and greatly appreciated.” Final inspections for drivers are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday with the race kicking off Saturday, June 11 at 8 a.m.

USINESSES TO KNOW IN & AROUND OUR COMMUNITY
Drum and Strum strikes a familiar chord for those who love making music By Anita Sherman STAFF WRITER
Tim Dingus and his shop, Drum and Strum, is a hub for the musically minded. If you want to learn to play an instrument or perhaps start up a band or test out your vocal chords, this is the place to come. Or perhaps your budding musician needs to rent an instrument for the high school band. You can find that here as well. And, if you make your way to the very back of the shop, you’ll find a complete workshop where instrument repairs are easily handled...a hospital of sorts for out of commission guitars, basses, mandolins, banjos and other instruments. Tim’s ascendancy to Warrenton’s best known and perhaps best loved music store destination started decades ago when as a 16-year-old he started a band with his older sister Cheryl. Tim laughs. “Cheryl bought a guitar...thinking she would play that...I ended up with the guitar and she played the
drums.” Tim’s mother, Gloria Dingus, who passed away in 2012, was the original founder and owner of the shop. A familiar and smiling face for many who came into the store, it was Gloria’s suggestion to Tim that they “open a music store.” “She was very supportive of us and wanted us to achieve our dreams,” says Tim , “it’s been truly a family business.” This July, Drum and Strum will celebrate its two-year anniversary at 102 Main Street in Warrenton. It’s been a good and well received move. When Drum and Strum first opened 25 years ago, their first guitar teacher was Mike Harrington. He is still with them. “I believe that we have the best team of instructors,” says Tim of the now 20 instructors that are available to give lessons. Drum and Strum 101 is a weekly band class that teaches you the dynamics of learning to play effectively together.
Tim is also very proud of one of their more recent offerings - the Fauquier County Youth Orchestra. “We work closely with the schools,” says Tim of the orchestra that now numbers some 30-40 young people ranging in age from 8 through high school. When asked about the popularity of one instrument over another, Tim paused briefly. “There’s been a resurgence of the old instruments...bluegrass instruments...so banjo, mandolin and lots of folks want to learn to play the ukulele.” However, strings and piano continue to be big draws when it comes to music lessons. “And voice lessons,” added Tim, “that is really big right now.” Over the years, Tim has come to know a lot of folks in the community. “More than I can remember,” he says, “familiar faces that we’re always glad to see and new people.” While their space is limited, concerts are held at Drum and Strum which is another reason that it is

one of the ‘happening’ places to be on Main Street. Sitting comfortably outside his store, Tim smiles and greets visiting patrons or business neighbors. HOME & GARDEN Something slithery this way comes | Last week I was sitting on the couch in my living room, working on my laptop. I raised my head to look out the window across from where I was sitting, about six feet away, and found a huge snake staring back at me. Almost five feet long, the snake was an eastern ratsnake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis, formerly known as the black ratsnake). It is the only snake that can exceed six feet in length found in Virginia, according to the Virginia Herpetological Society (virginiaherpetologicalsociety.com), and is non venomous. The snake lay quite casually with its front half on the windowsill, wedged in between the window and one of my favorite pieces of pottery. The rest was curled around a poinsettia on the table and lying across some computer equipment next

to it. The snake must have come in through the nearby deck door, which I’d left open. I was about to grab for my camera to take a photo, but it was on the chair next to the table and I didn’t want to spook the snake and have it end up in some inaccessible nook in the house. To get it safely out of the house, I knew I’d have to grab the snake and jerk it clear of the breakables on the windowsill and table. As a kid, I’d picked up snakes a lot barehanded, I hadn’t taken on a snake of this size in years, and my reflexes were not what they used to be. I slowly walked over to look for a pair of leather work gloves in a basket about 10 feet away. I could only find the right-hand one, but that at least would protect the hand I’d use to grab the front end of the snake. When I returned to the snake, it apparently realized the jig was up, started to back off the table. Its head quickly disappeared behind the pottery, then reappeared, heading toward the floor. Art for your health’s sake Staff Report More often than not, a painting will bring a smile to your face and lift your spirits. What a better place for a continuing art exhibit than your community hospital. Last week, Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center hosted an art show featuring student work from local elementary, middle school and high school art programs. Culpeper Medical Center will display about 30 pieces in the hospital for the next year. Joy Rozwadowski, a fourth-grader from Sycamore Park Elementary School, created this lovely painting with beautiful blue hues. Emily Waters, an eighth-grader from

The Marquis de Lafayette was known as America’s Favorite Fighting Frenchman. He volunteered with Washington’s Army in 1777. During one of his last tours of America in the early 1800s he stayed at the Bell Tavern in Culpeper.
Bell Tavern on the market On January 25, 1816, Benjamin Shackelford of Culpeper advertised the sale of his home and business: The subscriber being anxious to retire from public business, offers for sale his tavern and lots in the town of Fairfax, generally called Culpeper court-house, to wit: One half acre front lot, and on half acre back lot adjoining. There is on the premises a large two story house, 100 feet long, with 4 rooms on the first floor, with fire places in each of them, and so constructed that the front room may be occupied as a public bar room without interfering with the other rooms, with a portico in front of it 40 feet long and 10 feet wide; the other 3 rooms adjoin to the back of the front room, with a portico on one side of them, 70 feet long and 15 feet wide, two of these rooms may be made one by opening a folding partition, which will make a large dining room. There is on the second floor 7 handsome lodging rooms, which are divided into 3 separate apartments by 3 separate stair cases, with fire places in 5 of them, so that travelers or others may be well accommodated with lodging room. There are 4 cellar

rooms, with fire places in two of them. There is also a good kitchen, meathouse, ice-house, and a well of excellent water within 15 steps of the house – besides a number of other conveniences. The house stands in one corner of the front lot, which gives it the advantage of the main street in front, and a cross street on one side. There are stables with 60 stalls, besides several out stables, and a house in the stable yard to hold grain, and about one quarter of an acre back of the stables well set with clover and orchard grass. There is likewise a garden well enclosed, 70 feet wide and upwards of 250 feet long, handsomely laid out in squares and walks, and very productive, and at this time there are several kinds of small fruit in it that are usually cultivated in gardens, besides fruit trees of different kinds. There are held at this place two superior courts annually, the first Mondays in April and September, which set several days each; 4 quarterly terms, the third Monday in March, May, August, and November, which generally set 4 days each, and sometimes all the week, and 8 monthly courts, the third Mondays in every month, except the quarterly terms, which set two days each; besides a number of other public days, and a great many travelers passing through this place in the course of a year, together with the improvements, will make it worthy of the attention of any
person desirous of keeping a house of public entertainment. Any person wishing to purchase the property may have a great bargain in it. Part of the purchase money must be paid in hand, and the remainder in 1, 2, 3 and 4 years, on giving bond and security, and a deed of trust on the property to secure the payment. A good title will be made and possession given in May next, if required. Benjamin Shackelford was selling his tavern in preparation to move to Kentucky. But he did not realize his plans as he passed away in Culpeper in the spring of 1817. Jeremiah Strother was the purchaser of the property, taking possession in January 1817. The tavern sat at the southwest corner of Locust and Main Streets, and was known as “Bell Tavern.” On the evening of August 22, 1825, Strother hosted the Marquis de Lafayette with a banquet under a tent in the walled garden described in the ad. It was one of the final grand occasions of Lafayette’s tour of America in 18241825. The Marquis wasn’t the only famous guest in Bell Tavern history. Benjamin Shackelford had played host to Thomas Jefferson one winter night in 1809. Julie Bushong is the historian at the Culpeper County Library.

AUTOMOTIVE SHOWCASE Protect your auto investment If you've ever wondered what it takes to be an ASEcertified automotive technician, consider this: In the span of one career, automotive engine technology alone has advanced from purely mechanical devices that need periodic adjustments to sophisticated, computer-controlled systems that can actually compensate for normal wear. The same can be said for virtually every major system on today’s vehicles, from brakes to transmissions. And the technicians who service and maintain our vehicle fleet have had to learn it all. In fact, to be an ASE-certified automotive technician today is to commit xxx to a lifetime of training just to keep abreast of changing technology. Maintenance more necessary than ever before Modern vehicles are wonders of engineering. In just the past decade, maintenance intervals for things like spark plugs, emissions and cooling systems have been stretched out to 100,000 miles in some vehicles. But the need for periodic maintenance hasn't changed. In fact, given the longer life expectancy of today’s vehicles, the need for periodic maintenance has never been greater if you expect to get the most from what has become the second biggest investment most individuals will ever make. To protect this investment and to get the maximum reliability and safety from the vehicle you depend upon daily, you need to establish and follow a maintenance plan. The best place to start a maintenance program is by reading your owner's manual. In it you will find the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule. This schedule is based on "normal" driving, but remember that very few of us drive "normally." The roads are typically dusty and strewn with potholes and speed bumps. Look at the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule as a starting point for your vehicle maintenance plan, not the final authority. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), the non-profit organization that tests and certifies the competence of individual automotive repair technicians, knows a few things about vehicle maintenance too. ASE offers some general recommendations, which apply to all types of cars and trucks, to help you build a comprehensive vehicle maintenance plan. Lube for life The engine is the heart of your vehicle and probably the most costly to repair when something goes wrong. Modern electronic controls have eliminated a lot of adjustments, and what we used to call a “tune-up” has evolved into something akin to a complete physical, where most of the work involved is designed to verify proper operation of computer control systems.

Culpeper Times • June 2-8, 2016 ➤ Snake, from Page 8 chance of catching the snake, I grabbed for its neck, just behind the head. Eastern ratsnakes, while not venomous, usually avoid humans, but, if cornered can be quite feisty and will bite, as I found out several times as a kid. I’ve actually seen them come close to standing on their tails ready to take on whatever was threatening them. And because easter ratsnakes are great climbers, generally in pursuit of rodents or birds, they can show up in amazing places. I once had one fall from a stable rafter onto a horse I was saddling, and I’ve seen them climb up walls by wedging themselves between a door jamb and a windowsill. At a house I rented previously, a large eastern ratsnake regularly spent summer mornings draped over an azalea bush next to my frontporch steps, basking in the sun. With the snake at hand, I wasn’t quick enough and ended up gripping the snake’s neck too far down from its head. I tried to grab its body with my left hand while adjusting my grip with the right, but the snake whipped around and bit me at the base of my left
thumb before I could secure the hold. Of the many creatures I’ve been bitten by over the years, I have to say I far prefer the bite of a ratsnake to most, including a host of invertebrates that can leave me itching and scratching, and even in pain, for weeks. Not for the first time in my life I now had a nice crescent of needle-like pricks with blood trickling out of them, but the blood and slight pain stopped quickly. (Even the mark was gone in a couple of days.) Ignoring the bite, I concentrated on moving my right hand up closer to the snake’s head, so I could prevent being bitten again. When I had my hand in the right place, I jerked the snake up and away from the breakables on the table, knocking over only the poinsettia, and finally managed to grab the lower part of the snake with my left hand, securing it. In a lastditch defensive effort to gain its freedom, the snake released some musk from its rear end, which was a lot worse than the bite. I escorted the snake to the deck, leaned over the railing and unceremoniously dropped the snake on the ground. It quickly disappeared into the
HOME & GARDEN little stand of trees and vines a few feet away. Although I like having ratsnakes around, primarily to control copperhead and rodent populations, I hoped the snake would stay away after its rough treatment. But the next day, walking up my porch steps, I caught movement out of the corner of my eye and turned to see what had to be the same snake. It was now wedged into a gap between the chimney and the wall of the house, and a vertical groove in the siding. It was apparently trying to make its way up to my attic, which likely still smelled of the rodents that had taken up residence there last winter. My landlord had secured the vent and a hole a woodrat had made up there a few years back. However, knowing how good ratsnakes are at finding their way in, often through amazingly small holes, I wanted this one to move along to other quarters. But first I wanted to get that photo I missed getting the day before. I carefully went inside, trying not to startle the snake, which was staring at me, and grabbed my camera. But, by the time I got back to
