The Culpeper Town Police Department does a great job when it comes to holding ceremonies for their officers who are introduced or promoted or when they retire. Wednesday was no exception as several gathered to say goodbye to K-9 Titan who began serving with the department in 2011. He will be retiring to live a long and happy life on the Grant family farm. He's pictured with his handler, K-9 Officer Eric Grant. Typically, the career for a police dog is from 6-8 years. Sniffing out some facts, a dog's sense of smell is more than 10,000 times that of a human. The first police dog was used in 1907 in New York City. May 15-21 is National Police Week.

New personnel Culpeper County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Tony Brads welcomed two new administrators at Monday evening’s School Board meeting. Director of Human Resources Michelle Metzgar introduced Daniel Soderholm who will be the next principal at Culpeper County High School. Soderholm has been principal since 2012 at Windsor High School in Isle of Wight County where he also served as an assistant principal, athletic director and social studies teacher. He is currently working on a Doctor of Philosophy degree at Old Dominion University. He has a Master of Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brigham Young University. Soderholm, his wife Brooke and their four children are excited for this new opportunity. Carlos Seward will be joining Eastern View High School as an assistant principal. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Norfolk State and a master’s degree from Hampton University. Most recently, Seward has been serving as Dean of Students at George Washington Middle School in Alexandria, Virginia. Prior to this position, he was a social studies teacher in the Virginia Beach and Henrico areas. Seward, his wife Yolande and their children, Elexus (16) and Cameron (3) will be coming to Culpeper this summer.
North to seek re-election Currently serving as the ViceChair on the Culpeper County School Board, Michelle North will seek re-election in November. Her term expires December 31, 2017. First elected in 2013 with a writein campaign, North represents the Jefferson District.
Celebrating achievement “This is our night for recognitions,” said a smiling School Board Chairman Betsy Smith as several students were called forward for their achievements. Members of this year’s winning E-Squared Team gave their presentation which garnered each of them a $5,000 scholarship made possible through area businesses. “TraumaBands” team members are sophomores Mikayla Jenkins and Aaron Henson and senior Judith Alvarez. Their sponsor is Randi Richards-Lutz. All are students at Eastern View High School. USCT exhibit debuts at Museum of Culpeper History Thirty-seven men from Culpeper County joined the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War, and those 37 will be remembered during the Museum of Culpeper History’s newest exhibit beginning Friday. "U.S. Colored Troops of Culpeper: Their Sacrifice, Our Freedom,” curated by Terry Miller of Holland, Va. and in support of the George Washington Carver Regional High School Alumni Association will be visible for the first time during a special members preview May 19 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibit will be open to the public beginning Saturday. “This is a traveling exhibit that they go to each county with,” the museum’s curator of military collections Peter Griffith said. “What I have gathered is that they go through the records of the United States Colored Troops and take that county and pull all of them that have served.” The exhibit will feature 15 of the 37 soldiers, mainly due to space limitations. Their stories and what is known about them will be featured on large easels in the exhibit and artifacts related to the time period will be on display. “We’re going to show the type of weaponry they would carry,” Griffith said. “We will show some of their personal items. We have a medical canteen that is very rare that is going on display. We have a 61 Springfield Musket going on display.” Griffith said he believed that most of the soldiers did not return to Culpeper, but that many of their records have been lost to time. Some have been able to be located in pension files, such as Averson Farmer, who was born in Culpeper. “We do know that most of them went out to the Western Theatre,” Griffith said. “A lot of them drifted west (after the war), like a lot of soldiers did at the time.” The museum has a book dedicated to the USCT and it will be on display during the exhibit - which will run through July. Griffith said the museum learned of the exhibit after the board president saw a presentation in Orange and they decided it would make perfect sense to display it at the museum. He said the exhibit explores the historical significance of the free men and the slaves who traveled north to join the USCT. “They wanted to fight just as much as anyone else,” Griffith said. Of the 37 from Culpeper, 24 were in the infantry, three in the Cavalry, two in the light artillery and eight in the heavy artillery. For 33 years Clark “Bud” Hall has enjoyed the majesty of Hansbrough Ridge. Now, he will get to share it with the public. Hall will be the tour guide when the Culpeper Department of Tourism and Mountain Run Winery offer a trolley tour of the Virginia State Historical Landmark overlooking the hamlet of Stevensburg. Diane Logan, President of Friends of Cedar Mountain Battlefield and trolley tour coordinator for the Culpeper Department of Tourism, scheduled the June 3 event. “Now that the Civil War Preservation Trust has purchased the property, we were excited to offer organized tours of the ridge with our expert tour guide Bud Hall,” Logan said. Hall called Hansbrough Ridge “A Giant

Sleeping,” referring to how well preserved the defensive position was. At the ridge are dozens of huts, preserved from the winter encampment of 1863-1864. “I’ve been going there since 1984 and to think this place will be preserved is absolutely fabulous,” Hall said. “I’ve never seen a historic viewscape any more impressive than this one.” While the encampment is part of the appeal, it’s not as widely known that the ridge played a pivotal role in the Battle of Brandy Station on June 9, 1863. “Plus, this is core battlefield,” Hall said. “Much of the Battle of Brandy Station’s Stevensburg phase happened on this ground. From the signal platform from the top of Hansbrough’s Ridge you can see the entirety of Culpeper County.”

➤ Trolley, from Page 6 Hall explained the significance of the ridge, comparing it to Fleetwood Hill at the north end of the Brandy Station Battlefield. “As Fleetwood Hill protects you from invasion from the north, Hansbrough Ridge does from the east,” Hall said. “Hansbrough Ridge is a better defensive position than Fleetwood Hill, because the ridge is taller and with the trenchworks and artillery it was a formidable position.” Hall called the ridge a military strategist's dream. He also pointed out the importance of the ridge on the Battle of Brandy Station. Hansbrough Ridge may have turned the tide for the Confederates, helping them weather the federal storm. “It’s no secret the Confederates were surprised,” Hall said. “Two regiments of Confederates headed for Hansbrough Ridge and the ridge stymied the federal attack. Hansbrough Ridge enabled large companies to be delayed.” The CWPT purchased the property for $900,000 including a $250,000 grant from Virginia Outdoors Foundation from Culpeper landowners Joe Kincheloe and Marvin Jenkins. The duo purchased the property from the Stoy family in Maryland a few years ago. The 174 acre site helps give the Brandy Station/Cedar Mountain Battlefield Alliance a better position for a proposed state park that would incorporate Brandy Station and Cedar Mountain battlefields. “This is a huge sight geographically,” Logan said. “It’s on high ground and it was a pivotal part of the Battle of Brandy Station and later the winter encampment of 1863. There was a hospital built on site and log huts for the men. A road was carved from the ridge to Brandy Station for supplies. It speaks more to the soldiers and how they lived.” There is only one other known surviving archaeological location like Hansbrough’s Ridge in Virginia, and ironically it’s just down the road. The 41-acre Stafford County Civil War Park holds three earthen forts and remains of winter huts that Union troops built in the winter of 1862-63. Logan said 20,000 soldiers camped on the Hansbrough Ridge location and noted how well preserved the location is. “For me, it’s imperative to share Culpeper’s history,” she said. “We use it as education and can educate people how events in

Culpeper County impacted other areas like Orange.” Impact on Tourism Paige Read, Director of Tourism and Economic Development, said the trolley tour program has been a great success. “It’s a very rare opportunity to be able to view a part of Culpeper history that is not as well known,” Read said. Tourism drew in $38,323,349 for Culpeper in 2015, generating $874,048 in local tax receipts. According to Read, 20% percent of visitors to the visitor center cited history as the reason for visiting Culpeper. “We’re a very large history destination,” Read said. “A lot of people expected a slump in Civil War visits (after the sesquicentennial) and we have not seen that at all. Interest and visitor interaction has been steady.” There are six other tours planned for this season, and information on them will be released later. “We’re very excited for these tours, I wish I could offer them every week,” Read said. “Hansbrough Ridge wasn’t always my personal passion but it has quickly become so.” Tour information The tour will begin at the Depot where visitors will load into a trolley and travel to Hansbrough’s Ridge. From there, Hall will lead a tour and then visitors will be taken to Mountain Run Winery for a tasting. This is the second trolley tour offered this year and Logan said that eight more are planned through the Department of Tourism. They were first offered four years ago and picked up steam last year when four tours were extremely successful. The Department of Tourism then asked her to coordinate this year’s tours. “We’re very excited to go to these sites and share the history, plus wineries are extremely important to the history of Virginia,” Logan said. The tour will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 3. Afterwards the group will head to Mountain Run Winery for a private tasting with owner and lead vintner David Foster. Spring swarming births more bees
These past few weeks have been unbelievable! Again, with the weather being a bit strange and trying to feel somewhat better about our observation hive at the shop swarming I received a visit from a friend asking if I could give more of a clearer idea on just what swarming entails. First and foremost I have to thank Jerry Headley from Virginia Bee Supply. He has been an invaluable wealth of information. Like us, bees need space and a place to raise brood, to store honey and pollen. In the spring and summer a colony can increase in population thus needing more room. This spring found queens laying eggs much earlier than normal because of the weather increasing the chances of swarming. When space becomes too limited, bees need a solution. Their solution is to swarm. The colony acts as one entity

knowing what is needed to survive and more importantly what motivation is needed to reproduce. It is through swarming that the colony reproduces. With the rapid growth of the colony it is determined that in order to survive two colonies need to be created. Each will have their own queen to enable them to begin separate brood rearing and help to create bees collectively. We found that our observation hive had become too crowded and we did not act fast enough to give them enough room. We learned a valuable lesson and one that will not be repeated any time soon. On the other hand we have been able to help relocate a number of swarms to our bee yard and they really do seem to be happy, with one exception. My husband was able to retrieve a swarm hanging on a tree in our backyard, because the weather was cool and misty he had no trouble putting it in a hive box where it was left to acclimate. When we went to check on it later we found most of the bees had died, but what had happened was that they all had a fine layer of
a white substance on their bodies. It was heartbreaking to see some of them trying to crawl away knowing they were dying. Apparently before they landed in our backyard they had swarmed somewhere else and someone had sprayed them with something to kill them. They made it to our back yard where we found the queen and a number of her bees protecting her. They were not covered with any kind of pesticide and looked healthy. They were moved to another beehive and we are keeping an eye on their well-being. Last year we had two of our hives swarm, one we were able to retrieve and put in another hive where they did well, the second one was at least 40 feet up in our magnolia tree and since I do not own or know anyone that has a cherry picker I waved goodbye as they flew away (hopefully, someone else was able to retrieve them and they were put in a lovely new hive). But I digress. This season found us extremely busy from people that didn’t want to destroy the bees but wanted them to be taken away to a safe place as soon
as possible, which we have tried to do. A huge thank you to the people at Safeway who came by and asked if we had someone that could take a swarm from their parking lot which we did (great job Mark)! To one of our neighbors that came by to tell us she had a swarm and could we come by and get it, (thanks Shane for helping), to Merchants Grocery for calling but unfortunately the bees had just enough time to make a quick stop and move on before I could move them. I have been getting calls from people that care what happens to our bees and want to do the right thing when they find a swarm thank you! I hope this information explains a bit more about swarms and why it’s important to call someone and not destroy them. After all they are just looking for a new home. I cannot say this enough, if we don’t take care of our pollinators, who will?

Now in its tenth year, SAVOR will feature more than 70 craft breweries from throughout the U.S. that will pour their beer alongside a fantastic menu of hors d'oeuvres designed by chefs specializing in beer and food pairings. More than 2,000 attendees are expected on each night of this event. At this year’s event, the Brewers Association will also be pairing three American Cheese Society, "ACS" member cheesemakers with three selected breweries to sample pairings at three “stations” at the event. Vermont Creamery, FireFly Farms, and the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board will be representing themselves and the ACS community. Well, that and the amazing beer,” said a smiling Mitchell. Charlotte, a new store featuring fashionable attire for women, opened Friday on Main Street. Charlotte Brady is no stranger to running a store. She had one in Warrenton for more than 25 years and decided to make a move to Culpeper. “Timon of Athen$” – Richly Rema$tered They flatter and bow, they laugh, they swear their earnest friendship. They take his money (well, he DID offer) and when he comes to them for help, they disappear. Stop the presses. A fool and his money have been parted. This play, which doesn’t even have a production history from Shakespeare’s day, sparks plenty of controversy. Did Shakespeare write it alone or co-write it with Thomas Middleton? Is it unfinished or just unpolished? Some say it contains “the central essence of tragic drama” and others say it doesn’t even have a real plot. I say see it before you buy your next lottery ticket. The story of “Timon of Athens” is a story as old as time, but under Robert Richmond’s stunning direction, it reappears in the modern age of cell phones, electronic security, and retinal scanners. And why not? We’re so fond of talking about “greed” these days. This seldom produced problem/ tragedy play closes the 25th anniversary season at Folger and ends it on a high note. While Timon does not attain the grandeur of King Lear, Helen Hayes Award winner Ian Merrill Peakes in the title role is electrifying. Precise as a

diamond cutter, he peels back the layers of Timon from foolish philanthropist to morbid misanthrope with all the graduated shadings in between. In a clumsier handling, it would be easy to dismiss him as a simple ninny, a mega-million winner type who mistakes money for love and flattery for friendship and finds himself handsomely hoist by his own petard. And all of that is true, for Timon will listen to no one until it’s too late. But he’s not so easy to dismiss. His faithful steward, Phrynia, played by Aliyah Caldwell, injects a desperately needed note of caution. Intelligent, reserved, quietly alarmed, Phrynia warns him that the partying and gifts are being paid for with money borrowed against his land. And Apemantus (Eric Hissom), a philosopher whose cynicism, one suspects, is based on many years’ weary encampment in the gray areas of human behavior, is never disappointed because he wants nothing. Functioning as a one-man Greek chorus, he lounges in treetops and tells Timon frankly that he is a fool surrounded by flatterers – and Timon proves it by laughing it off. “I could deal kingdoms to my friends, and ne’er be weary…” he proclaims. And naturally he is up to his neck in friends anxious to have $ kingdoms 95 dealt to them. The play never shows us how he acquired his fortune, although it’s Haircut

Nor does it endow him with a family or clues to the psychological neediness that compels him to buy his friends and equate wealth with the power to bind men to himself. That is for the actor to illuminate. In his downfall with creditors at the door and empty space where his ‘friends’ used to be, Timon is equally extreme. It is not just the full weight of their ingratitude, but the overdue recognition of his own naïve profligacy that has brought him to this pass. As his generosity was off the charts, so is his new-found loathing of humankind. And then comes revenge. The compact Folger stage opens onto a world with no borders, for humanity undefined by nations is on display. Tony Cisek’s streamlined set and Andrew Griffin’s lighting design create a world familiar to us now – fast-moving electronic boards, even if the symbols are meaningless; data-gathering abstract lighted boxes; and a dark geometry of lines, stairway, and elevator
through which people disappear as quickly as they come. Matt Otto’s otherworldly sound design seems from a futuristic dream – or nightmare – that subtly enhances the progression of the story without overwhelming it. Costuming by Mariah Hale accentuates contrast. Timon’s silk-suited boardroom look, clean lines and sure tailoring against the rags of his self-banishment; his associates, respectable and well-heeled, devolve into their true hedonism in a wild party worthy of Gomorrah. With half of the cast playing multiple roles, pacing is swift. And the sudden reversed-reversal of Timon’s fortunes? A necessary bit of deus ex machina. Where once gold was his vehicle for ingratiating the Athenians to him, now it is payment for putting them to the torch. Being the protagonist of a tragedy confers stature, but it is not the stature of a Macbeth or an Othello. His is not the flaw of a larger-than-life character, but the all-too-human flaw of a dupe, and his anger at the world may well be the outward manifestation of his own self-loathing. Nevertheless, Richmond’s vision is so relevant and Peakes’ interpretation so visceral that Timon appeals on the level of an Everyman brought to ruin by his own heart. Let’s talk about mental health and addiction
She’s funny. She’s witty. She’s caring and compassionate. She’s a business owner. And she’s created something that didn’t exist before. These days, she’s feeling pretty good and she ought to. Making things happen can be intoxicating. I sat down with Sharon Clark last week to learn more about Open Minds, an event that will be held next Tuesday at Germanna’s Daniel Technology Center. For 10 years, Sharon was the Pampered Me Pink lady bringing cancer awareness to the forefront through a collaboration with Greg Napps at the hospital. Hundreds would turn out to learn more, share stories, donate money so women could have mammograms and feel strong, hopeful, resilient and come away smiling. Sharon passed the baton on that project but wasn’t done. She had another idea. This time she’d tackle mental
health and addiction. So, she started some seven months ago, connecting with others that might partner with her vision. Folks at Germanna, Culpeper Wellness Foundation, and Novant Health/UVA Health System in addition to countless nonprofits focused on surviving, support and tackling the tough issues that have left families struggling for answers and relief like Team Jordan. With Sharon was Dr. Karyn O’Brien, a clinical psychologist and senior director of behavioral health services at Novant Health UVA Health System, who will be the keynote speaker at the event, including other psychiatrists and therapists that will conduct a panel discussion. For these two women, their hope is that conversations can begin to erase the stigma associated with behavioral health challenges. In talking with Dr. O’Brien she is quick to point out, as an example, that relapse is part of the addiction process. It’s heartbreaking for the individual and those who care about them but it’s part of the process that hopefully will lead to recovery. As a society, we’ve tended to criminalize addiction, devalue the person who
is suffering, and make a moral judgment about their character and those associated with them. There is a tremendous amount of pain but, as challenging as it may be, it helps to talk about it and not only talk about it but learn of resources that can help. The energy, enthusiasm, passion, mission and vision of these two women is inspiring, contagious and exciting. Running a retail store is all about making connections between your customers and their particular fancies. It’s about communication, having conversations, making them feel and look spectacular. Sharon knows how to do this. She knows how to sparkle. She knows what invigorates. Pamper Me Pink had a more party atmosphere even though dealing with a poignant topic. Open Minds will take on a different tone but at it’s heart, the focus is on touching lives and making a difference. Mental health and addiction. Tough topics. The defining technological issue for future generations Net Neutrality. Just reading those two words has probably already put you to sleep, but you better wake up! The rules governing how data and services work on the internet are about to get rewritten in a manner that almost strictly benefits the internet service providers and their mass media empires. In a nutshell, the current net neutrality rules in place require internet service providers to treat all traffic equally. Comcast is not supposed to slowdown services such as Netflix or Hulu, even though there have been reports of this in the past. Net Neutrality gives everyone an equal playing field when offering their own online products, services, websites, blogs, or anything else imaginable. The current FCC chairman, Ajit Pai, wants to roll back all regulations surrounding net neutrality rules to create a more “open and free internet.” This is intellectually dishonest because in reality, this removes the level playing field and allows the internet services providers to pick winners and losers. providers would be able to charge a fee or some type of toll to allow companies to get their services prioritized on the internet for speed. If you can’t afford the fee, then you risk minimizing your online presence by not being able to find it or having your website function so poorly that no one would ever use it. The FCC is scheduled to vote on the “new” Net Neutrality rules in the middle of May. Signs of this have already been seen in the mobile wireless industry with lack of enforcement of zero-rating policies. In the past, there were rules preventing wireless carriers from giving preferential treatment to their own services by not counting usage of certain apps against their clients’ monthly data allowances. Now that the zero-rating rules are not being enforced, services such as DIRECTV Streaming do not count against your data if you are an AT&T customer, but watching a YouTube video does count. This clearly hurts other tech innovators such as Netflix, Sling TV, Hulu etc. Why would a person sign up for a service that could cost them more on their wireless cell phone bill? It’s pretty obvious that consumers will pick the services that won’t cost them precious gigabytes and risk running up a huge data bill each month. Another possibility is the next
generation of tech innovators working on the next advances such as virtual reality or artificial intelligence. It would be in the best interest of the internet service provider to watch these up and coming startups, mimic the technology, and then redirect the internet to their own service or try to extort a small visionary for more money. We live in an era of mass consolidation from our largest media providers. The companies that provide our basic internet service are also some of the largest at producing the same media we consume. They want to control how we consume, what we consume, and who we can consume it from. These organizations have such a strong control over the content, that you better have the money to get your message out or it might just get lost and never make it to the public. Net Neutrality rules need to remain in place. We still struggle with areas of the country that have no broadband access with legislation attempting to limit certain localities from getting access altogether, as well as a mafia style system to prevent more than once ISP from servicing an area. Throw in the rules that let the internet service providers sell your private browsing history, it really makes you wonder who has all of the power in our great country?

In the weeks to come, our own staff will undergo training on Single Estate chocolates as we are slated to open a new section dedicated to these harder to find chocolate bars and tablets. The common denominator with single estate or single origin chocolate bars are the uniqueness in flavors and in texture. We recently brought in Hu chocolate (Hu=for Human). They are a small chocolatier whose focus is to create a chocolate line that fits their personal specs as they could not find a match anywhere on the market. They made a list of “NOs” for their chocolate bars, and it includes No GMO, No Dairy, No Soy Lecithin, No Gluten, No refined Sugar, No cane sugar, and no sugar alcohol. The results are truly spectacular! Not only in texture, but also in taste, as it is chocolate in the purest form possible. Small chocolatiers also use Fair trade and GMO free raw chocolate to make a political statement, and while I do not believe politics ought to enter into the realm of chocolate-making, the two movements are very beneficial as they continue a mission to create the purest form of chocolates. The example of Hu is one of many small chocolatiers wanting to create something new, and the ultimate goal is their desire to share and send their messages through their unique lines of chocolate bars. Another chocolatier is Lake Champlain Chocolates who won three Sofi awards for their chocolate bars. The Sofi award is the Oscar for the food industry, it stands for Specialty Outstanding Food Innovation. It is given to the best of the

best in their respective categories. Again this is about creativity with noble ingredients and how it blends well with chocolate. Moka Fleck won the Best New Product Award and the Bronze Award in the Milk and White Chocolate category and It’s Hot, Honey won the Bronze Award in the Dark Chocolate category. What makes these two bars outstanding is the unique blend of ingredients. For the Moka Fleck, both the coffee beans, roasted by Vermont Coffee Company, and the house-roasted nibs, from Reserva Zorzal, a 1,000-acre bird sanctuary and old growth cacao forest in the Dominican Republic, combine together to bring you the taste of finelyground coffee with the nutty texture of the nibs to create a bar with a bold coffee flavor that is both irresistibly crunchy and undeniably smooth. COUNTRY CAFE TREATS EVERYONE LIKE FAMILIES. To walk into Country Cafe is like walking into a family gathering. Everyone knows your name, and if they don’t they quickly find out. The food is homemade from scratch, fresh and delicious and made by two longtime cooks. The staff is either family or as close as family, most of them having worked at the restaurant since it originally opened in 2002. The faces are all familiar from Culpeper’s culinary past, as the sisters who own and operate Country Cafe have ties to Jenner’s and Jolly Jeff’s. Sandy Via, Sherry Thornhill and Ann Hume learned the trade from their mother Peggy Hitt, who worked at Jolly Jeff’s for 35 years as a waitress - working the entire time with Country Cafe cook Loretta Grimsley. “I credit mom for instilling our hard work ethic,” Sandy said. “She always worked two jobs and we all started working at a young age and all of us worked two jobs.” Sandy is the primary owner while Sherry opened the business in 2002. Ann and her son Matt Corbin operate the iconic Baby Jim’s Snack Bar across town and Matt ran Country Cafe for two years. Another sister, Kathy Bascimo, is another familiar face. Working with the community is also important to the sisters they donate a meal every month to the Culpeper Senior Center and have forged meaningful relationships with all their regulars. “It’s a good meeting place for them and it gets them out of the house,” Sandy said. “It allows them to socialize and of course we like to see them.” They also help the needy, partnering with local churches and police departments to make sure that if someone is down on their luck, they get special treatment.“We’ve had people who have come in and we know they can’t pay for a hot meal and we’ll pick up the tab for them,” Sandy said. They also cater, having served Walmart’s Christmas party for every year since opening and providing meals for multiple Ruritan Clubs and churches. Customers rave about the homemade food - a recent lunch special featured fried chicken livers with a white gravy and mashed potatoes and two sides. The fried okra is a house favorite. And free pie Friday, with a pie baked by local legend Miss Effie Foster is a highlight as well. They just started offering Cafe Crab Benedict, with fresh crab from the Tidewater area caught by Matt. All of it is served with love and lots of laughter, and sometimes even by their regulars. “If we’re busy and the servers are busy customers will get up and serve coffee to other customers or pitch in and clean tables,” Sandy said. Regulars also pitch in every Sunday as a group of police officers routinely stop by for breakfast and always have their tab picked up. Eric Duncan Powell Eric Duncan Powell, 38, passed away in his home on Tuesday, May 9th, after his two and a half year fight with ALS. He spent his last hours surrounded in love by his wife and family. Eric was a craftsman, whether in his profession as a teacher, in his art as a woodturner, or in his way through life as a fixer and a maker. He was an enthusiast, in his enjoyment of the outdoors, in his playing of soccer, and in his love of all things active. Eric leaves behind many touched lives. Those met in his time growing up in Fauquier County; his time at Bridgewater College; and his time as a teacher at J Frank Hillyard Middle School, Broadway, VA; Stuart Hall School, Staunton, VA; Sandy Spring Friends School, Sandy Spring, MD and the Emerson Preparatory School, Washington, DC. He leaves some sorrowed and heartbroken, but all undoubtedly the better for having had him in their lives. Among them are wife Laura; her parents Peg and Rob; her brother Will and wife Eleanor; her sister Beth and husband Chris; his parents Dan and Debbie; his grandmothers Esther and Marietta; his brothers Jason and wife Jenny, Bryan and wife Amber, and Nathan and wife Jaricia. Eric leaves as a beloved (and likely most fun) uncle to Katie, Zach, Marina, Tyler, Grayson, Isaac, Joseph, Autumn, Hannah, and most recently Hallie Duncan and Leo Eric. Eric also leaves adopted brother Joe Palma; longtime friend Eric Mauck; and a big gaggle of Powells, Bowdens, and Diebels. The way of his passing—as his life—was full of grace. He carried his gentle heart and deep humor all the way to the end. He is, and will continue to be terribly missed. Please share your pictures and memories of him via his social media presence. John Bray Hutt John Bray Hutt, 82, of Reva died Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center. He was born July 21, 1934 in Rappahannock County to the late Henry and Elizabeth Jenkins Hutt. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Lillian Dodson Hutt; six children, Victoria Gwen Beatty and her husband, James of Front Royal, Deborah K. Nicholson and her husband, Charles of Reva, Beverly Gail Deal and her husband, James of Sperryville, Brenda Ann Jenkins of Culpeper, Shelby Lynn Smith and her husband, Richard of Alexandria, and Montgomery Vaughn Hutt of Reva. Additional survivors include 10 grandchildren, Randy Beatty, Robbie Beatty, Melissa Williams, Bray Williams, Daniel Deal and his wife, Jennifer, Timothy Deal, Marc Deal, Amber Figgins, Troy Smith and Elizabeth Smith; and seven great grandchildren. A funeral service was held on Monday, May 15, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jon Heddleston officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service. Interment followed in Sperryville Cemetery. His grandsons will be serving as pallbearers. AWESOME ARTISTS: Nineteen school divisions were represented at the VSBA (Virginia School Boards Association) 2017 Central Regional Art Show. Each school division could submit three entries. Culpeper County was represented by Bailey Wilson, a junior at Culpeper County High School, Aubrey Chaney, a second grader at Emerald Hill Elementary and Cheyanne Brown, an eighth grader at Floyd T. Binns Middle School. Bailey’s artwork won a third place.
ON THE GO: Students of all grades and ages from Culpeper, Orange, Madison and Rappahannock participated in the special games held at Culpeper County High School’s Broman Field Tuesday morning. The event's games consisted of many of the key events found in a Track and Field meet including dashes on the track, Shot Put (with softballs), and Discus Throwing (with frisbees). Most recently, Seward has been serving as Dean of Students at George Washington Middle School in Alexandria, Virginia. Daniel Soderholm (RIGHT) was welcomed at Monday’s School Board meeting. He will be the next principal at Culpeper County High School. Soderholm has been principal since 2012 at Windsor High School in Isle of Wight County.
