The road to his house was long for Alphonse Habonimanas and his family, but they finally have made it home. He steps into the new house and his eyes dart about the room as his lips form a massive smile. He looks at the floor, the baseboard and the freshly painted walls, still cradling the Bible given him minutes ago by Pastors James and Cynthia Arkord of Ark Ministry in Fredericksburg during
a formal ceremony by Greater Fredericksburg of Habitat for Humanity. As his eyes turn to the kitchen off the living room, his wife, Analissa, is in tears and rushes to hug one of the 150 local residents who worked since October to make the home possible. He mingles with well-wishers, but then a thought sparkles his eyes and his gaunt body glides through the assembled guests and heads for the front door. He opens it into the room and his thin fingers reach for
the blue key still in the lock, the key that he got minutes ago from Amber Smith, construction manager of the house-build. Before handing him the keys, she tried to keep back tears as she recalled the building process and urged him and his family to be happy in their new home. At the presentation Habitat Executive Director Thomas Carlson touched on Alphonse’s plight, thought HOME the visitors at the presentation PAGE 12
