Garrison tests systems with active-shooter training exercise By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Fort Belvoir garrison organizations participated in an activeshooter training exercise May 5, focusing on going over processes to make sure emergency personnel know how to respond to an activeshooter incident on post. “The objectives of the exercise are for the commander (Col. Michelle Mitchell) to observe her garrison employees’ reaction to an active shooter, to exercise and evaluate her emergency responders, to evaluate her incident command post actions and her emergency operations center,” said Donald Smart, operations specialist with the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security. The role players consisted of Community Emergency Response Team members. The CERT force is the first on any Army installation. They are individuals trained in essential skills, such as light search and rescue and first aid, Smart said. Belvoir Army Emergency Relief campaign extended Your dollar makes a difference By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer

The Army Emergency Relief Campaign on Fort Belvoir has been extended from its original deadline of Sunday to May 31. So, it’s not too late to donate. AER has $112,000 donated of a $160,000 goal, which is 70 percent, said Toni Cuttino, Belvoir AER officer. “If everyone on Fort Belvoir gave just one dollar, we could not only meet our goal, but surpass it,” Cuttino said. AER provides emergency financial assistance to Soldiers and their families, mostly from donations to the program, according to the AER website. Financial assistance comes in the form of interest-free loans, grants, partial loans and partial grants. AER has helped a local family whose house burned down. The family lost everything. “AER paid for clothes and furniture until insurance was able to kick in after the investigation,” she said.
