Supervisors won’t rename aquatics center TRACY BELL

bout 20 speakers addressed the Stafford County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday in support of honoring two hometown Olympic heroes instead of just one. The board already decided that an aquatics facility planned for the Embrey Mill community will be named for goldmedal Olympic swimmer Jeff Rouse, who graduated from Stafford High School. But the speakers urged the board to name the facility for both Rouse and fellow Olympic gold-medal diver Mark Lenzi, who attended Stafford High School, too. Some said that if that is not possible, Lenzi should still be honored in some way. Most speakers wanted better clarity and to know why Lenzi’s name would be omitted. Stafford resident Ruth Carlone told board members that it’s no shame to reconsider their vote. The shame, she said would be failing to recognize both men. Irma Clifton of Falmouth said that although the board has the right to name public facilities, that should in no way impede its members from doing the right thing. “Name it after both men who brought such honor to Stafford County,” she said. Some speakers said they personally knew Lenzi or his family, some of whom still live locally. Tonya Gardner of Spotsylvania told the board that Lenzi was a wonderful person, and she doesn’t understand the reasoning behind the omission. “If you could find it in your hearts to find a place for him...” she urged the board. “He needs to be remembered. Please let other people learn about him and all that he did.” He won a gold medal in diving at the 1992 Olympics and a bronze in diving in

the 1996 Olympics. He was born in Huntsville, Ala., but raised in Stafford. Lenzi died in 2012 at age 43 after experiencing heart and blood pressure problems. Falmouth resident Becky Reed said that when she thinks of one of the men, she thinks of the other. “Honor both of them,” she said. “This chance doesn’t come around often.” Rouse, born in south Stafford, won gold and silver medals in swimming in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, and two gold medals in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. He once held the world record in the 100-meter backstroke. Stafford Supervisor Gary Snellings, R-Hartwood, explained that when voting on names of facilities, the board does not poll the public or rely on committees. “Why? Because we would get 50 different names and upset everyone,” he said.
Snellings agreed that Lenzi should be recognized for his accomplishments. He said he’s suggested that Stafford High School be renamed for Lenzi instead. Both men worked very hard, said Snellings, but what sets Rouse apart is that he stayed in Stafford and regularly contributed back to his community since his accomplishments. Lenzi ultimately left the community, he added. The board previously discussed naming Woodlands Pool in Stafford for Lenzi, but many balked that either Woodlands isn’t up to par or noted its lack of diving quipment altogether. Stafford Supervisor Meg Bohmke, R-Falmouth, recently launched a petition that garnered 1,400 signatures in support of including Lenzi’s name with Rouse’s on the aquatics center. Lisa Iden listened to passionate pleas as supporters urged the Stafford County Board of Supervisors to honor Olympian Mark Lenzi by including his name on a planned aquatics center in the county. Iden is Lenzi’s sister. To her, the issue is personal, emotional and overwhelming. On Tuesday, about 20 speakers asked the board to include Lenzi’s name on a new, state-of-the-art aquatics center planned for the Embrey Mill subdivision in Stafford. The board already plans to name the aquatics center after Olympian Jeff Rouse, but supporters have questioned why Lenzi’s name was omitted from this honor. Both men graduated from Stafford High School and made it to the Olympics, bringing home gold medals, the speakers said. Lenzi died in 2012 at age 43 after experiencing heart and blood pressure problems. At Tuesday’s board meeting, discussion from supervisors who want to name the building only for Rouse, centered on the fact that Lenzi ultimately left the community, while Rouse stayed in Stafford. In a letter to the board, Iden explained that her family is still in the area. She lives in Spotsylvania, her mother, Merry Ellen Lenzi, has lived in Stafford since 1968, and other family members either live and work in Stafford or the immediate area. Iden said her brother lived in Stafford since he was a month old, but he left the community when he got a full scholarship to Indiana OLYMPICS University. PAGE 10 “This was unheard of

Columbia Gas hikes quarterly gas costs Columbia Gas of Virginia customers will see their seasonal monthly bills increase to $42.81 from a current level of $40.28 effective immediately. This comparison is based on a 23 CCF seasonal monthly usage level and is in line with the $42.38 monthly bill amount from the same period in 2014, according to a news release. A CCF is the measurement for natural gas usage and is the equivalent of 100 cubic feet. The rate change reflects an update to the costs Columbia Gas will incur in purchasing gas for its customers over the upcoming three-month period. Columbia Gas typically adjusts its gas costs on a quarterly basis to reflect the price the company pays for natural gas. By law these costs are passed on to customers without markup or profit. The Virginia State Corporation Commission reviews all purchased gas adjustment rate changes. Columbia Gas also recently announced that customers will receive a refund between $20 and $25 as a result of the final order in the 2014 base-rate case. This gas cost adjustment will not change the refund customers will see later this year. Customers can enroll in free programs to help manage their energy bills, including: the Budget Payment

DANIEL P. CORTEZ
For the Stafford County Sun
After another sleepless night, the day I’ve prayed for and dreaded for decades finally came, while 100 other proud yet conflicted Vietnam veterans found a moment of rectitude. Saturday in the packed auditorium of Little Hall on Quantico Marine Corps base, America finally said thank you with the help of 1st District Congressman Rob Wittman. Last year in keeping with federal mandates, he announced organizing several ceremonies for Vietnam veterans, recognizing the war’s 50th anniversary. As part of the program committee, my advisory role was particularly difficult. Frankly, like most ’Nam veterans, I preferred not to think about the most chaotic time in my life, much less celebrate it. It re-opened the deep festering national wound that was Vietnam — especially for 9.2 million veterans dishonored by America after the war. The ceremony surreptitiously transported me mentally to January 10, 1971, in the Que Son Mountains. There our battalion executive officer Maj. Corky Ram hit a booby trap attempting to medivac wounded Marines and was killed with others. Hours earlier he had secured me from accompanying him. As a 19-year-old Marine corporal undaunted by the veracity of combat, I would have been onsite helping those wounded Marines and possibly be killed as well. Ram left a wife and six children. Recently I found the courage to call Ram’s oldest daughter Linda to give her details of her father’s service and leadership. Like other vets, I harbored feeling of guilt for living, while better men than me, like Ram, died. Nevertheless, the honors event was tremendously healing as young Marines served as escorts and displays about the war and support programs put on by service organizations were effective. Ron Christmas, a retired Marine lieutenant general who earned the Navy Cross in Vietnam as a captain, and Jimmy Spencer, a former Army sergeant

major, were guest speakers bringing balance to the event. That was until Spencer said publicly he’d go back to Vietnam in a heartbeat. I suggested he might need a urinalysis after making such as statement to hardened combat veterans, but he revised his statement saying he only wanted to “visit” Vietnam today. For Stafford’s former commonwealth’s attorney, Dan Chichester, a Bronze Star hero, the day was no doubt therapeutic. Chichester’s own son Jay, who served in Iraq in 2011 and was also decorated with a Bronze Star, beamed with pride as his father was congratulated by Wittman and both were publicly recognized. Guests included Virginia’s Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs, retired Adm. John Harvey; Prince William County Supervisors Marty Nohe and Jeanine Lawson, and Stafford Commonwealth Attorney Eric Olsen. While Quantico base commander, Col. Joseph Murray attended, disgracefully not one Stafford Supervisor was present.
Understandably, many Vietnam veterans still harbor deep-seated resentments and struggle to discuss their service or be in the company of the military or politicians. Fortunately, according to Wittman, two more such events will transpire in the next two years. Henry James III, a Stafford Lakes resident, came to honor those who served and said he hoped veterans would indeed forgive the nation for decades of disrespect. I echoed that suggestion at the close of the program before we demonstrated our continuing patriotism in spite of the past by singing “God Bless America.” Yes we must try to forgive the nation and, thanks to Wittman and America’s newest heroes like Jay Chichester, Vietnam veterans can sleep better. Now our new mission is to live long, while remaining vigilant so the nation’s veterans are never disrespected again. Letter to the editor Editor’s note: The following letter was sent to each members of the Stafford County Board of Supervisors by the author. Dear Stafford County Board of Supervisors: There is a strong public support for this county to add Mark Lenzi’s name to the swim and dive center being built in our community. We
understand that this Board does not want to add Lenzi’s name to the building. My question is why? Has someone expressed that they do not want Lenzi’s name added? Is there any other person(s) name under consideration? Mark Lenzi won a gold medal for diving, just like Jeff Rouse won a gold medal for swimming. His mother his still a resident of this area as are many of Mark’s friends and family. It would be a well-deserved way to honor Mark’s
legacy to this community and to the diving community where Mark made a great impact. If the county’s constituents deserve at least the opportunity to vote on this matter if the Board cannot produce a reasonable reason for opposing this request. Please reconsider your opposition of this decision and vote to add Mark Lenzi’s name to the new aquatics center. Kelly and Keith Gardner Stafford County

Colonial Forge High graduate Daniel Ezeagwu will see a familiar face on the opposite side of the field when his University of Maryland football team opens the season. And that was also the case last season in the opener. The Terps will play their first home game in College Park on Sept. 5 against the University of Richmond, whose roster includes sophomore running back Gordon Collins of Mountain View High School. “He is really physical and he gives all out,” Ezeagwu said of Collins, against whom he played in high school. Ezeagwu, a 6-foot, 207-pound sophomore defensive back, played in four games for Maryland last year as a freshman. Does he expect to see more playing time this year? “Hopefully. STAFFORD SPORTS REPORT | BRIAN WRIGHT We wouldn’t be breaking news if we told you that football season has begun. The local schools make that well known, and the fans were out in droves for the opening weekend.
FOOTBALL All players use the opening game as a way to get the season off right. North Stafford freshman running back Devyn Ford
began his high school career in wondrous style — rushing for an astounding 237 yards and four touchdowns on just 14 carries as his Wolverines crushed Osbourn, 53-22. The 5-11, 165-pounder had scoring runs of 46, 60 and 85 yards. A holding penalty in the fourth quarter prevented a potential fifth TD. While nobody surpassed Ford in terms of scintillating performances on
the gridiron this past weekend, Jamill Collison-Cofie is certainly an honorable mention. The Mountain View tailback rushed for five first half touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 42-20 victory over Freedom. Quarterback Ahmad Tweedy connected with Tre Coghill for a 40-yard passing touchdown, as well. Looking to bounce back from a woeful 2014, the Stafford Indians nearly got the
boost they needed. But, in the end, victory just barely eluded them. A 15-12 fourth quarter lead soon turned into an 18-15 advantage for Patriot. That score remained as time allowed for just one last play. Stafford QB Jamin Lane found Landon Woodson on a 46-yard pass that was short of the end zone as the clock SPORTS expired. Virtual reality gadgets on the market, so just imagine I looked to the left and was surprised to see a fighter jet there. Even more astonishingly, I looked up and found another fighter just above my head, only feet away from my own aircraft. A voice startled me and I looked behind me to realize I wasn’t alone in the plane; there was a pilot behind me. The Family Tech gadget budget is — shall we say — “restrained” so I wasn’t flying my new F-35, but instead my $20 Google Cardboard. Virtual reality, or VR, may finally be poised for the home. VR goggles let you see different views as you turn your head. Imagine you are wearing VR goggles and it appears to you that you are at the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum near Dulles. In front of you is a big silver-colored airplane. If you turn to the right, you see more airplanes. Look up and you see a variety of planes hanging over your head. Look down and you see the floor. While it’s not as good as being there, you get a sense of what it is like to be there. Imagine that kind of view if it was dynamic. Games will be able to create constantly changing scenes around you. For a race car simulation game, it will mean you can look up at the mirror, look beside you and look around as you
would in a real car. For a combat game, you’ll see your squad around you. Looking up you’ll see a sniper in the window or a plane about to strafe your position. And they have non-game uses. Therapists use them to help people overcome phobias. It’s better to introduce people to virtual heights gradually using VR. Imagine the uses in education. A virtual planetarium controlled by the individual student, for example. The military has been using VR for training for years. Science and engineering can use VR to explore and educate on complex concepts. Imagine previewing a home to buy using VR. Facebook believes in VR. In March 2014, it purchased Oculus Rift for $2 billion. Oculus is to be released in 2016. It will be combined with a wireless controller so people can interact with the environment as well as see it. Shortly after finishing our gaming PC build, the beautiful 34-inch curved monitor we couldn’t afford dropped in price a bit. I told my son we should start putting money aside and with more price drops, we might be able to afford one in time.
Instead, he pointed out that by the time we could afford the monitor, VR would probably be the way to go for games. Valve, a provider of downloadable PC games, has its own VR headset coming, from Taiwanese phone manufacturer HTC. Pricing and delivery dates are up in the air for both devices but might be in early 2016. Oculus has said that the cost of a PC supporting the Rift, and the Rift itself, will be about $1,500, making some believe the Rift by itself will be about $300. Others are producing augmented reality goggles instead of virtual reality. Microsoft’s Hololens is one. It shows you what is truly around you, but overlays information. It is not unlike the view you get now in a video game where a character’s name, power, etc. hover over a character. I’m more excited about augmented reality for non-gaming uses. Imagine walking through a trade show wearing glasses designed with augmented reality. If someone you know approaches you, it could use facial recognition to remind you of their name, job, when you last met, etc. CastAR, a pending AR solution is getting a lot of attention, and funding from Andy Rubin, creator of the Android Operating System. A video showing its
potential is on this week’s link post at FamilyTechOnline.com. I try to write in this column only about things than can help families now, but I wanted to touch on this since you will be hearing a lot about VR and AR in the coming year. A couple months after Facebook spent the $2 billion for Oculus Rift, Google gave away VR goggles to developers at their Google IO conference in June 2014. Google Cardboard is a small cardboard box with some special lenses in it. You slide in your Android or iPhone running the free Cardboard app and it gives you VR. Sensors already in the phone know when you have turned your head, or raised or lowered it. What you see changes as you move. Some Android phones let you shoot photospheres, the 360-degree photo I mentioned. The one I described above is actually made at the Air and Space Museum and is on the link post. Youtube has a 360-degree video channel you can watch within Cardboard too. Links to all that, and where you can buy Cardboard for $5 and up, are on the link post. For links mentioned in the column or to share this column online, go to http:// www.familytechonline.com. Mark’s contact information is markstout.info.

He was named NCAA Diver of the Year twice and added five Big Ten titles to those awards, she said. Iden said she and her family, along with the community, are very proud of her brother’s accomplishments in the Olympics. Lenzi was the last American to medal in diving on the 3-meter springboard in 1996. Iden said that when she hears that, she thinks: “Wow that’s my brother — the kid who grew up in Stafford County since he was one month old.” Though Lenzi was born in Huntsville,

a good defense is playing well when it counts. Colonial Forge wasn’t great for their entire contest against Brooke Point, but it stepped up in crunch time – enough to put together a 26-23 opening night victory. In making up for last year’s 44-0 loss to the Black-Hawks, the Eagles held an 18-17 advantage. A Rohan Martin TD reception (and subsequent two-point conversion) stretched the lead to 26-17, but Brooke Point threatened. However, most of those chances were thwarted by the Forge defense. The Eagles picked off Black-Hawks QB Brock Carnes twice and blocked a game-tying field goal attempt.
FIELD HOCKEY Stafford made good use of the Westfield Tournament, recording three wins in four contests. Two of those victories came this past Saturday. The first was a 4-0 triumph over Thomas Jefferson, which featured the scoring of Rachel Riley and Gail Podlesny (two goals each) as well as a pair of assists by Lia Constantine. That was followed by a 3-1 win against the South County Stallions.

Ala., he was raised in Stafford since just after birth. He won a gold medal in diving at the 1992 Olympics and a bronze in diving in the 1996 Olympics. Iden mentioned that Lenzi was the first American diver to perform a 109C (forward 4.5 somersault tuck) in competition, and the first diver to score more than 100 points in competition, performing a 307C (reverse 3.5 somersault tuck) off the 3m springboard for over 102 points. In the letter, Iden told the board: “I am not going to try to ask you to change the name of the pool being built in the county, as it seems you are set on recognizing only Jeff Rouse.” But later in the letter, Iden asked the board to consider using Lenzi’s name and photo at the diving well. Goals were recorded by Podlesny, Riley, and Constantine. Lydia Bullock and Emily Kreshno contributed with assists.
CROSS-COUNTRY At the Great Meadow Invitational last Saturday in The Plains, Alexa Putka of Stafford completed the 3.1-mile course in 20:11, good enough for a 13th place showing. That was the top performance for the Indian girls’ team as it collectively finished 15th. The boys’ team was 16th. GOLF Stafford needed every last strokesaving play to get past Mountain View at The Gauntlet. And thanks to Jacoby Smith’s outstanding 35, the Indians’ 184 was enough to beat the Wildcats’ 188. In addition to the performance of Smith (which earned medalist honors for this event), Stafford had a final tally of 48 from Madison McLean, a 50 from Ashton Williams, and a 51 from Zachary Friberg. Matt Howard led Mountain View by carding a 42, while Dominic Castelli and Gabby Cuellar also posted scores under 50. Brian Wright can be reached at info@staffordcountysun.com.
