The winner in June’s Democratic Arlington County Board primary is likely to be the candidate who best convinces voters he or she is the choice for improving government accountability and customer service. That theme was struck by both incumbent Libby Garvey and challenger Erik Gutshall at dueling campaign events, held just three doors down from one another on Columbia Pike on March 13. “I just want Arlington to achieve its potential . . . [but] sometimes, your county government gets in the way,” Garvey said during a reception at Rincome restaurant, where a Thai-food buffet awaited supporters. “Sometimes, we have been a little rigid.” Garvey said she was leading the charge to improve government services and having success – “I’m sensing a change,” she said – but Gutshall countered that he’s the choice for those who seek improved government operations. “I know how frustrating it can be,” Gutshall said at a fund-raiser at P. Brennan’s Irish Pub. “The county government has got to do a better job. I don’t think we’re getting that kind of leadership out of the incumbent.”
