Arlington Superintendent Patrick Murphy wants to look at the possibility of a joint redevelopment venture between the county government and school system for the parcel currently housing the Aurora Hill library, senior center and community center. In a report to School Board members

set to be delivered April 7, Murphy said the site presents an “outstanding opportunity” for the government and school system to work together and solve several problems at once. The site was proposed as the location for a new school by the South Arlington Working Group, which last year delivered recommendations to the School Board that included construction of a new elementary school adjacent to Thomas

Jefferson Middle School near Route 50. School Board members subsequently ratified the Thomas Jefferson proposal, which later won support of the County Board. The South Arlington Working Group said an additional school would be needed sometime after 2019 in order to accommodate rising student enrollment in the Pentagon City/Crystal City area. But in his recent report to School Board members, Murphy said the bigger need is

likely to come in the northern part of the county, due to population growth in the Rosslyn-Ballston and Lee Highway corridors. Those two corridors will face a projected shortfall of 1,157 elementary-school seats by the 2025-26 school year, while the Pentagon City/Crystal City/Columbia Pike areas will face a shortfall of just 230 seats (factoring in the new elementary school on the Thomas Jefferson site).
