Inaugural Freshman Class Will Be Light on Female Students, School Officials Say SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

When the “Arlington Tech” high-school program makes its debut in September at the Arlington Career Center, it will have many things: high-tech classrooms, cutting-edge coursework, innovative internships. One thing it won’t have, though, is a lot of young women. School officials say only 21 percent of the incoming freshman class will be female, a figure that is “not high enough,” Arlington Career Center principal Margaret Chung said at an April 26 community forum discussing the future of the Career Center site. A total of 43 students have been accepted as members of the inaugural freshman class at Arlington Tech, which aims to combine academics with career and technical education, complemented by hands-on outside learning experiences. The program will start with the freshman class for the 2016-

17 school year, adding additional grade levels each succeeding year. County school officials expect the overall student body to grow to 140 students in 2017, 240 in 2018 and 440 in 2019, ultimately topping out at 800 by 2022. That final figure is about 40 percent of the size of the county’s traditional high schools – Wakefield, Washington-Lee and Yorktown – but is in line with the H-B Woodlawn Secondary Program.
