Arlington County Board Chairman Libby Garvey (D) said she would not rule out lending support to a non-Democrat in future political races, while her opponent shot back that such a position is antithetical to the party’s values. Supporting non-Democrats, as Garvey did in 2014 when she backed independent John Vihstadt over Democrat Alan Howze in two County Board races, is “not responsible leadership” within the party, challenger Erik Gutshall said. In all races, “absolutely, 100-percent unequivocally, I will support the Democrat, period,” Gutshall said in answer to an audience question as he and Garvey squared off April 20 in their first debate, sponsored by Arlington Young Democrats and held in Clarendon. Garvey’s decision to endorse Vihstadt in a spring 2014 special election and then in the November 2014 general election resulted in her leaving the Arlington County Democratic Committee for more than a year before a rapprochement in December 2015.
