SIMPLY THE BEST

L

ooking for something different from our regular franchise pizza delivery place, we tried Rubino’s a few months ago. The big, brightly lighted restaurant in the Southern Walk shopping center was impressive – as was the crowd of families inside, including a youth sports team celebrating the end of its season. And the pizza was dynamite. Apparently a lot of our neighbors agree, because Rubino’s was voted Best Pizzeria in our 2022 Best of Ashburn survey. That’s quite an accomplishment, especially when it seems as though there’s a pizza restaurant on every corner. One of our goals with Best of Ashburn is to spotlight local businesses right here in our community – and although the well-known national chains receive votes in some categories, it’s always gratifying to see the locally owned businesses beat them out. Rubino’s is certainly a local success story – so much so that the three brothers who own the pizzerias have expanded

into the convenience store/gas station business. And they have more growth plans in the works. You can meet the brothers and learn about their success in editor Chris Wadsworth’s Business Boom feature, which begins on Page 58. And all the Best of Ashburn winners – in over 100 different categories – are highlighted in a special section of this month’s magazine, starting on Page 18. Again this year, we were overwhelmed by voting for the Best of Ashburn, which ran online in February. Over 13,000 individual voters cast over 72,000 votes, supporting nearly 3,000 different businesses, organizations and people. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners – not just for their success, but for their perseverance through a pandemic, supply-chain issues and more. Elsewhere in this issue, you’ll meet our Best Artist winner – Jess Judkins, whose art is crocheted coffee sleeves that she gives away. Our Wine & Dine feature spotlights your Favorite Bartender, Emilie Collins of Famous Toastery, who mixed up a special Ashburn Magazine bloody mary for us. And on Page 12, we introduce you to Commander Jim Goodwin, a highly decorated U.S. Navy veteran who served in Vietnam and retired to Ashburn. Finally, dedicated readers will notice the magazine has a bit of a different look this month. Our standout art director, Kara Thorpe, has updated some of our headline fonts, department headings and other elements in what we like to call a design “refresh.” It all adds up to the largest issue of Ashburn Magazine ever, at 88 pages. Not bad for our 20th edition overall. We hope you enjoy meeting the many businesses and people honored as the Best of Ashburn – thank you for voting in the survey, and please remember to continue supporting them and all local businesses.

The Crochet Lady Ashburn Farm woman spreads goodwill with her creations BY

JILL

DEVINE

“H

ey, are you the crochet lady?” It’s a question that Jessica Judkins is asked a

lot lately. “I take my crochet bag everywhere I go, like the pool or playground with my kids, but when people started recognizing me, I realized I must be making an impact,” Judkins said. Maybe you’ve seen Judkins’ creations. They are the reason she has become something of a local celebrity. She makes detailed crocheted coffee sleeves, which she then gives away for free at coffee shops throughout Loudoun County. Judkins has become so popular that she was named Best Artist in the 2022 Best of Ashburn contest. Her cute, quirky sleeves sport a variety of designs ranging from storybook or cartoon characters, such as Harry Potter, Clifford the Big Red Dog or Batman, to pop icons like Mr. Rogers, Bernie Sanders, Dolly Parton or actress Betty White. And some Loudoun residents will stand in line for

hours for the chance to snag one.

A Crocheted Viral Sensation

Judkins announces her coffee-sleeve giveaways through her Facebook page, called My Charming Colors, which has more than 3,000 followers. “It’s a bit overwhelming lately, because I can never make enough to give to everyone who wants one,” said Judkins, who moved to Ashburn Farm in August 2020 with her husband, Scott, and their two children, Judah, 11, and Magnolia, 6. “When I arrive at a shop, the line sometimes is already down the sidewalk. So far, I’ve given away about 2,600 sleeves, but there are always people who are sad when I run out,” she said. Judkins’ efforts have garnered so much attention that she even got a short write-up in People magazine. Judkins distributes her coffee sleeves at shops such as Blend Coffee Bar in Broadlands, the Starbucks in Lansdowne and Ridgetop Coffee in Sterling, as well as Lees-

burg’s SimplyBe, King Street and Weird Brothers coffee shops, among others. Before she became manager of SimplyBe Coffee, Tara Kennedy was a customer in one of those lines. “My son really wanted a Baby Yoda sleeve, so we got in line to buy a hot chocolate,” Kennedy recalled. “A lot of people were there, chatting about where they had previously tried to get a sleeve. It’s like hunting for hidden Easter eggs – and you want to shout, ‘Yes, I got one!’ when you succeed.” SimplyBe Coffee employs workers with special needs, so Judkins says it is particularly dear to heart. “Our employees get very excited when Jess comes to our shop,” Kennedy said. “Her designs are so cute, and the fact that she gives them away for free is inspirational and fits well with our shop’s mission.”

Encouraging It Forward

Judkins said she got the idea to distribute coffee sleeves in 2013 while sitting in a

Fairfax Starbucks with her toddler son. “Judah noticed that the customers waiting in line looked sad, and he wanted to give them flowers,” she said. “I love to crochet, so I decided to crochet coffee sleeves to spread cheer.” With the manager’s permission, Judkins started distributing about 100 sleeves at a time at that shop, with Judah’s help. “I attached an encouraging note to each sleeve, and he would hand them to people, telling them that they are special and loved,” Judkins said. “Some people didn’t know what they were and would put them on their wrists, but they did make everyone smile, which was our goal.” Today both Judah and Magnolia help their mother produce and distribute sleeves in an effort she calls “encouraging it forward,” which differs from “pay it forward” in that there is no exchange of money. Although her kids are starting to learn to crochet, for now they help with distribution or by writing notes to attach to the sleeves. Judkins refuses payment or donations of any kind and does not take special orders

My Charming Colors is simply a charitable hobby, according to Judkins, who said she does not intend to apply to be a nonprofit. “I’m just a fiber artist who homeschools her kids and wants to encourage other people.” Judkins buys most of her yarn and supplies at JoAnn Fabric in Sterling and claims the only payment she will ever accept is the smile on someone’s face.

That desire to make others happy drives Judkins, who described an incident last year when she was grocery shopping. “I passed a woman who was wearing a Ruth Bader Ginsberg [RBG] shirt, so I left my cart right there and ran out to my van to get one of my RBG sleeves. I rushed back in and tracked her down in one of the aisles, calling out, ‘I’m here to encourage you; you were meant to have this.’ This was during

of cancer, Judkins designed “Harry Potter” sleeves, attaching a note in honor of the child, who had loved that book series. “I later saw online that because of my note, a person made a donation to an organization devoted to fighting that particular kind of cancer,” she said.

COVID, so we had to stay far apart, but she took it and started crying, telling me, ‘Oh, my. I’ve been following you on Facebook.’” Each of Judkins’ sleeves is an original design and can take from 30 minutes to two hours to make (some, like Clara and her Nutcracker are very complex). Although they are free, their value lies in how they encourage others to be generous. When one of Judkins’ friends had a child who died

Shannon Rood, an assistant kindergarten teacher who lives in Brambleton, fell in love with Judkins’ Eeyore design from the “Winnie the Pooh” books. “It was so cute, and the added touch of his pinned-on tail on the back side of the sleeve really made it stand out,” she said. Rood’s work schedule always seemed to conflict with giveaway dates, so she mentioned that on the My Charming Colors Facebook page. “A person named Sunny saw my comment while she was in line at Starbucks. This complete stranger decided to surprise me and pick up the sleeve for me,” Rood said. “It shows how much Jess’ kindness spreads beyond her just dropping sleeves

on counters. It has a trickle-down effect, and I was the beneficiary of both Jess’ and Sunny’s acts of kindness.” Judkins has given her crocheted sleeves to volunteers at Loudoun’s COVID vaccination clinics and she also started distributing sleeves to school and hospital staff. She created a series of humorous “Trauma Llama” sleeves for employees at Inova Loudoun hospital’s trauma center, and she has distributed sleeves for staff at several Loudoun County Public Schools locations. Judkins is now working on sleeves for school bus drivers. “Once I drop the sleeves off … I often do not see the people who receive them, so the best thing anyone can do for me is to post a note on my Facebook page,” Judkins said. “That’s my payment. I just want to know if the sleeves made people happy.” No need to worry, Jess. The answer is undoubtedly yes. Pilot & Patriot Ashburn Navy veteran reflects on his service in the Vietnam War BY

CHRIS

00. That was the limit — the maximum number of combat missions you could fly in Vietnam without becoming a commanding officer. Jim Goodwin flew 199. 199 times, Goodwin piloted his aircraft — usually an A-4E or A-4F Skyhawk — off the deck of a ship or from some military runway and into the skies over North Vietnam. For his service, he was awarded a variety of commendations, including a whopping 27 Air Combat medals. It was a far cry from his childhood in Providence, R.I., or his years studying forestry at Syracuse University. But with the Vietnam War looming, Goodwin decided to control his destiny. His future father-in-law — a man he greatly admired — had been a Navy medic in World War I and World War II, so, despite having no experience, Goodwin approached a Navy recruiter thinking he could be a medic, too. “Then out of a clear blue sky, they asked if I would be interested in flying,” Goodwin recalled. “I said, ‘Hell, yes!’” Goodwin went on to serve 23 years in the Navy — from 1956 to 1979. Ashburn Magazine had the honor of sitting down with Goodwin, 89, at his home at the Tribute at One Loudoun community in Ashburn. We

talked about a few of the most memorable moments — highs and lows — from his time in the military. Here are excerpts of our conversation, salty language included.

Proudest Moment

When Goodwin is asked about his proudest moment from the roughly four years he was preparing for and flying combat missions as a lieutenant commander in Vietnam (1965-1969), he demurs. Nothing immediately jumps to mind — he was just doing his job. But when pressed, he recalls the bombing raid that earned him a Distinguished Flying Cross, one of the top honors for an aviator. “I can still see it like a picture. There is the target. There is the roll in point. There is a saying that you are on your own from roll in to roll out. Your ass belongs to Uncle Sam. You stay on target. You don’t go left or right — and you are as vulnerable as hell. There was a SAM [surface-to-air missile] right under the run-in line. I was watching it very carefully. Well, the radar came on and it lit up. That’s when you hear a signal — doo doo doo. Then you know you’re in trouble. I rolled in and immediately fired off a shrike — that’s the name of our missile. A shrike is a lethal bird. The missile went right into the target and took it out. I felt damned good about that. There was a guy I could see in another plane named Bill Cook. That’s the guy that vouched for me that I actually hit the target. I still owe him some beers.”

Scariest Moment

As you might imagine, your first real combat flight over enemy territory is bound to be emotional, and it certainly was for Goodwin. They were on a bombing raid somewhere over North Vietnam. He admits he can’t recall the details of the mission — where they were specifically or what they were targeting, but it was likely North Vietnamese supply lines or vehicles. “I was as scared as I have ever been in my life. I can’t remember where we were going — I was literally that scared. We go in and suddenly the sky is full of SAMs. So many that we couldn’t keep track of them all. I could see a little hill with three or four SAMs flying out of it, all at the same time. I was

scared as hell. We dropped the bombs we were carrying and got out of there. Afterwards, my lungs hurt. From the minute you start a jet to the minute you get out of it, you’re breathing 100% oxygen. We were hyperventilating and didn’t realize it.”

Saddest Moment

There is one moment that still causes Goodwin to choke up — his voice becomes raspy and his eyes well up. He apologizes for his sentimentality, even now, more than 50 years later. But who can blame him? He

lost a good friend, a leader, a mentor — Commander Bill Searfus — the same man who guided him on that first frightening combat run some two years before. It happened on the Gulf of Tonkin. “Bill Searfus was the most savvy combat aviator I have ever known. The real tragedy is that he wasn’t shot down during a mission. We were on the USS Coral Sea during my first combat tour. [The ship] had been given the deck of a supercarrier. It was a steel deck, and it had a light tilt to it, and it was very slippery. All the planes were positioned on the aft end [rear or stern end] of the carrier. Of all the aircraft, his was parked at the very far back. He had just pulled out to taxi forward when another plane taking off used too much power and [Searfus] was blown backward [in his plane]. He flipped over and right off the deck. That was a tragedy. That screwed up our morale for a while.” Commander Searfus’ remains were never recovered.

Looking Back

to a long career as an earth sciences teacher in Fauquier County schools. His beloved wife, Trudy, passed away in 2017 — after 61 years as husband and wife — “a good long marriage,” as he calls it. His eldest son joined the Navy and had his first tour of duty on the USS Enterprise, the same ship on which Goodwin ended his service. Today, he has 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Most of his family lives within three hours of Goodwin's Ashburn home, and he loves spending time with all of them. When asked to reflect on Vietnam, he’s clearly conflicted — an old airman wise enough to see the world in all its shades of gray. “I don’t really think we got much of anything done there. We lost. When you lose, what is there to brag about? This isn’t a country of losers. We appreciate winning and I like that attitude. Olympics, a war, whatever — we are used to winning. We have trade with [Vietnam] now and we support them. And why not? Germany was our deadly enemy. Now, they are our allies. History kind of repeats itself. It’s a good thing to be generous in victory. You make friends you would never believe. I’ve always been proud of America. I’m a patriot and I love this country. It’s unique and — with all its faults — it’s a good-natured country. I love it. The only thing I love better is my family. That’s the truth.” A

elcome to Ashburn Magazine’s Best of Ashburn 2022. This is our annual issue where we celebrate local businesses and take the pulse of the community. Who are Ashburn’s favorite doctors, bartenders and personal trainers? What are our favorite restaurants, parks, auto shops and more? This is the third year for the Best of Ashburn and each year, it has grown by leaps and bounds. More than 13,000 voters cast ballots this year — up 30% from 2021. And those participants cast 72,000 individual votes — up roughly 20% from last year. All total, nearly 3,000 businesses, people and organizations received nods during the February voting period — and honestly, each one of them is a winner for having survived (and often thrived) during the challenging business environment brought on by a pandemic, supply chain issues, staffing shortages and more. Congratulations to all and read on to find out more about the top vote-getters who can rightly claim they are the Best of Ashburn.

THE TOP 10

While we celebrate all our winners, it’s fun to look at who received the most votes overall, in any category. Seven of the Top 10 overall vote recipients are repeats from 2021, but after two straight years at the top of the list, Ford’s Fish Shack falls back a smidge this year. However, Ford’s — along with Blend Coffee Bar — are the only two businesses to appear in the Top 10 all three years that Ashburn Magazine has conducted this survey. Here are the Top 10 vote recipients in 2022 along with the prior years they have appeared in the Top 10. 1 DIANA PAUL, DIANA’S FITNESS LAB Best Personal Trainer/ Coach (’21)

t’s a name nearly every Ashburn resident will recognize immediately — Rubino. As in Rubino’s Pizzeria, the popular restaurant with two locations in Ashburn — in Ashburn Village and in the Broadlands. But the pizza joints are just scratching the surface of the small but growing business empire that the Rubino brothers — yes, there are three of them — have built in Northern Virginia. Three restaurants at the moment and six gas stations — the three latest gas stations featuring the new Filling Co. Gas & Grub convenience store concept. That’s nine separate locations around the region — with hints of more to come. For the Rubinos, family is a key to everything they have accomplished. Be it the legacy of their Italian grandmother to the jobs they worked together in high school, it all proved to be a bit of foreshadowing of what was to come. Steve Rubino is the oldest at 59 and the spokesman for the group. His brother, Rick, is 57 and David is 54. They live in Willowsford, Belmont Country Club and Aldie, respectively. They grew up in Burke and all attended West Springfield High School and George Mason University. Steve and Rick both worked at a local seafood restaurant as teenagers. Meanwhile, David managed a gas station in Springfield. A restaurant. A gas station. Their career path was already laid out before them. In 1987, the brothers went in together to open their first restaurant in the Bailey’s Crossroads area of Fairfax. The restaurant was a franchise location of the Mr. Hero sub shop chain. Business was good, and they opened a second Mr. Hero location in 1992 in the Village Center at Dulles in Herndon. Many people know that as the “clocktower center” for the retail and office building there with giant clocks on top. Meanwhile, with David’s familiarity and connections in the gas station business, the brothers opened a Mobil station in Herndon in 2002. “In the beginning, it was definitely challenging because it was all new,” David said about opening a gas station compared to a sandwich shop. “Getting your hands wrapped around operating a convenience store was a different concept, but after a while, I really enjoyed it.” While David managed the service station, Steve and Rick plotted a path forward on the restaurant side of things — a path that was about to see a big switcheroo. After 17 years with the Mr. Hero brand, the Rubinos closed their original location and converted the Herndon spot into their first Rubino’s Pizzeria. That was in 2004, and a second Rubino’s location followed in Ashburn’s Ashbrook Commons shopping center in 2008 and the Broadlands Marketplace (better known as Southern Walk) location in 2012. “My heritage is Italian and at the time [2004], there wasn’t really any pizza out there [in Herndon],” Steve said. “I had some good recipes from my grandmother — especially our meatball recipe and our tomato sauce recipe. That was the food we grew up on.” The pizza has become a staple of Ashburn life — certainly for local sports teams who flock to the restaurants for team parties. The restaurant also won Best Pizza in the 2022 Best of Ashburn contest. Cindy Mayer of the Broadlands has three sons and, like

many parents, she has been to a lot of events at Rubino’s over the years. “We love the BBQ Chicken and Bacon pizza,” she said. “We have always loved going [there] after basketball season for team celebrations. The kids enjoy the pizza and Icees and the parents can even get adult beverages.” M AY E R As the years ticked by, the Rubinos also added two gas stations to their portfolio — the Shell station in the Lansdowne Town Center and the then-Shell station at Ashbrook Commons. Things were quiet for a time, and the brothers enjoyed owning and operating the various entities they had created. But another big change was just around the corner — one driven by a competitive edge that underlies the Rubinos’ calm outward demeanors. Developers announced plans to build a new shopping center immediately next to Ashbrook Commons. The new center — Ashbrook Marketplace — would have a whole new line-up of stores and restaurants. Even more challenging, a gas station was planned for the parcel of land kitty corner from the Rubino’s Shell station. There was going to be a literal stone’s throw between the two stations. And there was nothing the Rubinos could do about it — until they came up with an audacious plan. They would eliminate the competition by taking over the second gas station site themselves and owning two gas stations basically facing each other.

“They were putting a gas station in there, come hell or high water,” Steve said. “So, in order to protect our interests, we went ahead and did a deal [with the developer] and opened the new Shell station.” The brothers ultimately moved their Rubinos location to the new center as well. Meanwhile, they switched their old station to the BP brand, and moved the Shell brand to the new, larger station they built just 100 yards away. “Wonderful, hardworking brothers.” That’s how Diana Shipley describes the Rubinos. She’s a vice president of leasing with Saul Centers, a local developer and shopping center operator that has done deals with the Rubinos. “They have invested in Loudoun County by delivering quality buildings and excellent service to the communities they serve. It is not easy to operate with the demand for items and the labor shortage, yet they have a successful formula.” The Rubinos also wanted to do something more than a typical convenience store. The brothers felt they had to have something to compete with the big guys like Wawa and Sheetz. “We needed a food concept,” Steve said. “We had the food background. We knew what we were doing. So, we created the Filling Company.” From the ground up, the brothers created the Gas & Grub concept. They worked with designers to create the convenience store brand, the logo, the décor and everything else that goes into an enterprise of that magnitude. “Not being a designer myself, in the beginning, some of the [artist renderings] were frustrating. They weren’t where I wanted to go,” David remembered. “Then all of a sudden, this gentleman presented us with something that we thought was wonderful and we ran with it.” That winning design was created by Total Image Creative, a Maryland-based firm. However, when it came to the food, the Rubino brothers handled that themselves. Sub sandwiches. Pizza. Burgers. Fries. And perhaps most importantly — their signature cheesesteak sandwich. “That’s a big item for us,” Steve said. “We sell more cheesesteaks than pizza. It’s a real big mover for us.” They also have a Bavarian-style soft pretzel, deep-fried Oreos and creamy milkshakes. But if you’re watching what you eat — don’t worry. There are options like wraps, salads and even acai bowls. Roxanna Urban, who lives in Ashburn’s Village of Waxpool neighborhood, was one such customer who was surprised by the offerings at the Filling Co. “My daughters and I stopped in after school and grabbed some snacks. I was so pleased to see some ROXANNA URBAN healthier alternatives on the menu,” Urban said. She called her acai bowl “fresh” and “delicious.” “[It was] not the quality of food I would normally expect to get at a convenience store or gas station — so much better.” The Rubinos also stock their store shelves with a bevy of unique items — things not always seen at convenience stores around Ashburn. Sure, they have Doritos and bottles of Coca-Cola. But there’s also Van Leeuwen brand ice cream from New York City and Nightingale ice cream sandwiches from

Road. This was all done during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic — something Steve called “a challenge.” “The Rubino brothers have been extremely successful catering to people who are busy and on the go,” said Kim Adams, director of marketKIM ADAMS ing for the developer of the Brambleton community, where two of the new Filling Co. stores are located. “They have mastered the concept of providing convenient — and delicious — food.” Meanwhile, plans are afoot to close the Rubino’s in Herndon. That location had a strong lunch business with local office workers. But COVID-19 and the work-from-home trend did a number on the sales, and the Rubinos are eager to move on. As far as other future plans — Steve Rubino will discuss some, but not others. They may seek to turn their Shell station in Lansdowne into a Filling Co. location, but there’s nothing firm on that yet. Meanwhile, they have some other plans afoot — ones that Ashburn residents will probably find very interesting — but the details aren’t for public consumption yet. Regardless of what comes next, the Rubinos know one thing — they’re in it together. Three brothers, working side by side for more than three decades. “It can be difficult at times,” Steve said. “But the bottom line is that we all have the common goal of being successful. You can trust your family. You can be sure they always have your back. It’s not like an outsider coming in and taking over management or ownership. Family is trust.” A

Richmond. Beer labels like Sycamore Juice Willis and 3 Floyds Zombie Dust. And Lone Oak coffee roasted in Winchester. “Customers notice that this is not your average convenience store,” Steve said. “One of our biggest challenges … is that we want to put out very high-quality menu items with high quality ingredients, but the c-store business is very price sensitive. Not to single out 7-Eleven, but when you walk into a 7-Eleven, you don’t have very high expectations. That was an obstacle for us. We wanted to put out a higher-end product, but we couldn’t necessarily charge for it. So, it’s been a lot of work trying to find the right balance.” The Rubinos opened three Filling Co. locations in quick succession — all in Ashburn. The first one at Ashbrook Marketplace, followed by one at the Brambleton Town Center and one near the corner of Northstar Boulevard and Evergreen Mills

No Limits Local bars offer unique takes on the popular bloody mary BY

CHRIS

WADSWORTH

W

hen you order a beer, you know exactly what to expect. Same with a glass of wine. A gin martini, a whiskey sour — there may be slight variations on these cocktails, but still you pretty much know what you’re getting. That’s not the case with a bloody mary. The popular brunch drink juice can be spicy, mild or somewhere in between. It can have a salt rim, a seasoned rim or no rim at all. And then there’s the garnish. From a simple stick of celery to an elaborate headdress of shrimp, olives, bacon, even a burger or chicken wing — there are as many variations as there are bartenders. “The fun part about a bloody mary is being able to top it off however you like it,”

said Brambleton resident Emilie Collins. “For me, the perfect bloody mary has a salt rim, a little bit of spice, some lime juice and a celery stick.” Collins should know. For the past 18 months or so, she has been a bartender (and server and shift supervisor) at the Famous Toastery restaurant in Ashburn’s Loudoun Station development off Shellhorn Road. She was also named Best Bartender in Ashburn Magazine’s Best of Ashburn 2022 contest. Collins says the bloody mary is one of the most popular drinks served at the restaurant — both the Classic Bloody Mary and the Ultimate Bloody Mary, which they top with a grilled shrimp, candied bacon, olives and a lime wedge.

“I think ours are perfect,” she said. “[You’re] not overwhelmed by toppings, but you still get a treat to go along with your cocktail.” There is some dispute over the origin of the bloody mary. A French bartender claims to have invented it in 1921 while working at the famed Harry’s New York Bar in Paris. (The bar was just plain New York Bar at the time. Harry would tack his name on two years later.) Meanwhile, others say it was invented at the 21 Club in New York City in the 1930s. Originally just vodka and tomato juice, the popularity and the variety of ingredients used in a bloody mary have been growing ever since. In Ashburn, Ford’s Fish Shack has an Old Bay Bloody Mary made with bacon-flavored vodka and an Old Bay rim. Baker’s Crust in the Belmont Chase plaza has a bloody mary made with a honey habanero moonshine, everything bagel seasoning on the rim and a pepperoni garnish. Even Top Golf has an elegantly understated bloody mary with a salt rim and an olive stuffed with a gherkin pickle. Parallel Wine & Whiskey Bar in the Broadlands has a popular “ultimate” bloody mary that features a wagyu beef slider, a bacon lollipop and a blackened shrimp —

Emilie Collins from the Famous Toastery was named Ashburn's Best Bartender in the Best of Ashburn 2022 contest. Here, she serves up an Ultimate Bloody Mary to an eager customer.

along with the usual olives, lime and lemon. “It’s like your whole brunch in one glass,” said Parallel owner Jason Bursey. But perhaps even more intriguing on the bar’s menu is the Bourbon Bloody Mary, garnished with a bacon lollipop. “There’s the Bloody Maria made with tequila, but since we are a bourbon and whiskey bar, we did one with bourbon,” Bursey said. “While vodka tends to take a light approach, the bourbon has a little more body and a richer flavor. For a bourbon drinker, it’s great.” Last fall, Weathervane Coffee & Wine Bar in the Goose Creek Village shopping center was doing a weekend brunch that included a Sake Bloody Mary. Yes, a bloody mary made with Japanese rice wine instead of vodka. They garnished it with a simple wedge of celery and a gherkin. “There was an interplay between the tomato acids and the rice wine,” said Weathervane founder Paul Large. “There was a little different taste, and people couldn’t quite pin down what it was — and then they’d have this lightbulb moment.”

(Left) The Sake Bloody Mary from Weathervane Coffee & Wine Bar; (right) The "ultimate" bloody mary at Parallel Wine & Whiskey Bar in Ashburn.

Although Weathervane isn’t currently serving brunch, Large says if it resumes, he will bring back the Sake Bloody Mary in a “heartbeat.” While the fancy garnish and the unique spirits may get all the attention up front, most bloody mary enthusiasts are likely to agree that it really comes down to the mix. The tomato juice with all types of seasonings and mix-ins can make or break your cocktail. “What really matters is your base mix,” Collins said. Like many Ashburn area bars and restaurants, the Famous Toastery makes its own mix — a combination of olive juice, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce and other secret ingredients. But she says don’t feel bad if you gravitate toward store-bought mixes such as Mr. & Mrs. T, George’s or — her personal favorite — the well-known Zing Zang. “Even if you’re using a store-bought mix, you can add in lime juice, olive juice, pickle juice, celery salt and so forth,” Collins said. “I don’t think there are any limits on what you can put in your bloody mary mix.” A

Underground Wonder

amid glistening walls, tall columns and pools of crystal clear water. Their shouts of wonder echoing throughout the caverns hinted that they had found a big cavern complex. Known locally as “the Phantom Chasers,” the men had discovered a grand and mysterious cave. At 64 acres, Luray Caverns — roughly 90 minutes southwest of Ashburn — is the 12th largest cavern in the world and the largest on the East Coast. Today’s visitors don’t need ropes and candles. They can explore this subterranean wonder world on a 1¼-mile paved walkway, most of it around 80 feet below the surface, with the deepest part at 164 feet. The caverns have a steady temperature of 54 degrees, but humidity can make it feel warmer. Ashburn residents Tracy and Scott Sheppard took their two boys to the Luray Caverns when they were younger. The chilly temperature T R A C Y was just one of the S H E P PA R D things that fascinated the grade-schoolers. “They thought it was neat how much cooler it was in the caverns than it was outside,” Tracy Sheppard said. “They wanted to know if [the caverns were] how cavemen lived ‘back in the day.’”

t all started with disappearing cattle and disappearing water. Something was going on in the hills around Luray back in the summer of 1878, and a group of local men wanted to get to the bottom of it. On a 90-degree August day, searching the fields and hills for caves with three others, Billy Campbell felt cold air coming out of some loose rubble. After he and the group dug about 10 feet, they suddenly felt something. “Cold air rushed out of the entrance in such volume that it was chilling to the skin

despite the hot sun” and had “the odor of washed potatoes and damp earth,” Russell H. Gurnee wrote in his book “Discovery of Luray Caverns, Virginia.” The rushing air was so strong that it blew out a candle. On Aug. 13 that year, a five-member group returned and slinked into the abyss on a rope. They were instantly overwhelmed by the other-worldly formations they found. They said they looked like dripping carrots and sparkling pin cushions,

Nature’s Fanciful Decorations

The caverns started forming 400 million years ago. The oldest formation is 7 million years old. Geologists consider Luray to be an “active cave” because of its dripping water that deposits minerals that build up over time. It takes 120 years for new deposits to accumulate 1 cubic inch. Because it has no opening to the outdoors, no animals except microscopic critters can live in Luray Caverns, experts say. Illuminated by 720 lights, the caverns are a seemingly endless amalgam of hard-

Mineral-bearing formation created by thousands of water also spreads over the limestone hands rubbing walls or builds deposits on protruding the damaged ledges — sometimes called flowstone stalagmites. — that resemble frozen waterfalls, veils and tents. Minerals from the soil provide colors. Iron and iron oxides create reddish-orange-yellow tones and manganese creates the grays. The white calcium carbonate formations look like gleaming marble or cake icing. The greens are cave algae, a form of plant life. It is a Dr. Seuss-like fantasy underworld, where nature’s “decorations” make human imaginations run wild. People say they see cauliflower ears, mushrooms, cupcakes, shells, elongated peppers, stuffed socks, phalluses, sausages, pretzels, castles, totem poles, hanging fish, a shaggy dog and even the Michelin Man. An 1880 Smithsonian Institution report said, “It is safe to say that there is probably no other cave in the world more completely and profusely decorated with stalactite and stalagmite ornamentation than that of Luray.” Over time, officials have named some formations. Pluto’s Ghost is a 45-foot white column that recalls the Roman god of the underworld. Saracen’s Tent, resembling a drapery, and Titania’s Veil are flowstone, sheetlike deposits of minerals.

MORE THAN CAVERNS While the caverns themselves may get all the hype, the Luray Caverns property includes a myriad of other attractions to keep visitors busy. The Car and Carriage Caravan Museum features a 140-item collection dating from 1725 to 1941. Man’s inventive transportation modes are displayed, including an 1840 Conestoga wagon, bicycles, buggies and vintage automobiles, including an 1896 Peugeot, 1906 Cadillac touring car, 1915 Ford truck, 1925 Rolls Royce and a 1941 Lincoln. The Luray Valley Museum has Native American artifacts from 500 B.C. to 700 A.D., a 1536 Bible printed in Zurich, Switzerland, 19th-century quilts and furniture and a book signed by Davy Crockett. The Shenandoah Heritage Village is a 19thcentury farm community of original buildings, including a Dunkard meeting house, a heart pine log house, corn crib and a one-room school built between 1870 and 1884 for African Americans. Guests can get lost in the largest hedge maze in the Mid-Atlantic. Known as The Garden Maze, the one-acre garden features more than 1,500 hedges creating a half-mile long path that diverges at dozens of places.

The Rope Adventure Park will have young and old alike stepping out of their comfort zone as they take on either the Low Ropes Course or the High Ropes Course and navigate (safely) across rope bridges and beams in the air. If your kids ever dreamed of searching for treasure, they will enjoy the Stonyman Mining Company Gem Sluice, a history lesson and geology lesson all wrapped up in one where they can sift through flowing water and look for hidden gems.

In 1941, a 5-year-old boy received his first toy train set. That led to a lifelong love of toys. As an adult, that boy — now a retired minister — let Luray Caverns put his huge toy collection on display at the new Toy Town Junction museum. There are also two restaurants — the Stalactite Cafe and the Heartpine Cafe — on the property and, in a park across the street, the Luray Singing Tower — a 117-foot-tall tower built in 1937 featuring a carillon with 47 bells.

Vistors stand at a railing and marvel at the Luray Caverns around them — the 12th largest cavern system in the world.

Dream Lake, at 2,500 square feet and less than 18 inches deep, seems perfectly still and creates an optical illusion as a jumble of overhead stalactites are reflected in the water below. “[The boys] wanted to take a swim in the water and were very curious about how deep it was,” Sheppard said. Former First Lady Michelle Obama cited as her favorite formation the “fried eggs” — two stalagmites accidentally sawed off. Visitors rubbed the remaining bases so that

they look like shiny egg yolks. The Great Stalacpipe Organ is the largest musical instrument in the world, covering over 3½ acres. Between 1954 and 1957, a Pentagon mathematician, Leland W. Sprinkle, sanded down stalactites to match a musical scale, ran five miles of wires from the console and installed rubber mallets to strike the differing notes ranging over four octaves when the organist depresses a key. The four-keyboard console looks like a standard organ, but there are no pipes.

The first song he tapped out was “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” The instrument has been played 15,000 times and today runs like a player piano. Half a million visitors explore the caverns every year. In addition to Obama, notable visitors include former Vice President Al Gore and at least four Virginia governors. Weddings and dances have been held in a large chamber called the Cathedral Room. Among the mysteries still lingering today are human bones that early explorers found embedded in calcite. Experts speculate they were of a Native American, probably there for 500 years, and may have washed in from a collapsed burial site. The cavern’s geologic artistry and allure have more than proven the observation of one of the first explorers — a man named Jim Modisett — who said, “It’s the damnedest hole I ever saw.” A Glenda Booth is a freelance writer based in Virginia. oudoun County has seen many changes throughout history, but one thing has remained constant: the unyielding beauty of the Potomac River that defines its northern border. The sun that shines on its sparkling waters today is the same sun that shone on 19th-century Loudoun boatsman Bazil Newman. Newman was a free Black ferry operator who, despite significant obstacles and discrimination in pre-Civil War Virginia, became a successful entrepreneur, businessman and owner of at least 186 acres of farmland where Goose Creek joins the Potomac. Today, most of Newman’s former property is in the affluent golfing community known as River Creek. And the site of his former business property across the water — long a Loudoun County park — has been renamed in his honor. More on that in a moment.

A Free Black Man in a Slave State

Born to a white mother and a Black father in November 1779, Newman was not positioned for an easy life in Loudoun. He was a free Black man during a time when slavery thrived. A 1790 census recorded that Loudoun’s population of 18,962 included 4,213 who were enslaved. Loudoun differed from most of Northern Virginia and the antebellum South in that, in addition to plantation owners who held enslaved workers, it was home to

many Quakers, Germans and A newspaper advertisement Scottish Irish who had migrated placed by Bazil from the North with anti-slavNewman promoting ery views. Several free Blacks his new warehouse lived in Loudoun, but they were and ferry services. required to carry a “freedom” paper that verified their legal status everywhere they went. Life was hard for people like Newman. Because free Blacks posed a perceived threat to a slavery-dependent society, white leaders passed laws to control their progress. In 1806, the Virginia General Assembly decreed that African Americans emancipated after May 1806 had 12 months to leave Virginia or face re-enslavement. In 1831, the Virginia General Assembly passed laws forbidding African Americans in Virginia to assemble, learn to read or write, or preach. “The most interesting thing was the fact that he was so respected and trusted for an African American man living at that time,” said Lori Hinterleiter, a member of the Black History Committee with the Friends of the Thomas Balch Library in Leesburg. “Land ownership for free Blacks existed then, but that he owned so much land, had a business and operated a ferry was pretty remarkable.”

A Life Built on the Potomac

In a 2019 report of the Loudoun County Heritage Commission, author Bronwen Souders wrote that by 1820, Newman was living with a free white woman (interracial marriage was illegal), presumably the mother of three children — two boys and a girl. Eventually Newman had three sons: Basil, Benjamin and Robert. By 1836, he was living with a different white woman named Cornelia, with whom he appears to have had a daughter named Sophy. bers, including Bazil’s younger brother, Hezekiah, joined the family tradition of working on the Potomac as boatmen. Free Black boatmen at the time were under constant suspicion of aiding runaway enslaved persons, who would cross the Potomac and travel through Maryland to freedom in Pennsylvania. The Virginia General Assembly required that Black boatmen obtain certificates from “respectable white persons” to verify that their shipping manifests were accurate. In 1839, a white man named William Shreve built a warehouse on or near Newman’s land at Goose Creek. He put several ads in Leesburg’s weekly “Genius of Liberty'' publication advertising that he had bought a “commodious WAREHOUSE on the Potomac, about 3 miles from Leesburg, for the business of receiving and forwarding produce or goods of every description.” Shreve touted the ferry services of Bazil Newman as a “well-known and experienced boatsman.” By spring 1840, Newman himself was placing ads notifying the community that he had bought the warehouse, adding that he had a “superior BOAT,” and that he “may always be found at his post and the most careful attention will be given to all Merchandize and Flour or Grain entrusted to his care.”

Ferrying Others to Freedom

As a man who spent his life poling boats along these waters, Newman probably knew the river better than anyone in Loudoun. Evidence suggests that he or family members used that knowledge to escort the enslaved across the river as part of the Underground Railroad. Several escaped enslaved people attested to traversing the river at or near where Newman plied the Potomac. One example — a preserved diary entry written by white Loudoun resident Mason Ellzey references such a boatman: “It afterwards came to be known that the ferryman at Edwards Ferry, on the Potomac, was the underground agent of these organized thieves, at the ferry, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal was a part of the route which received, on certain boats, fugitives brough over the river by the ferryman.” Across the creek from Newman’s property, on land that is present-day Lansdowne, Newman operated his warehouse and was part-owner of a gristmill that had been named Elizabeth Mills years earlier after Elizabeth Clapham, the wife of a local slaveholder. Loudoun leaders eventually designated the area surrounding the historic relics of the mill as a recreational facility, naming it Elizabeth Mills Riverfront Park, with an upstream canoe launch named after George Kephart, a ASHBURN MAGAZINE

Harris, “who has lived with me for the last sixteen years in quality of a wife and who has been a faithful bosom companion and obedient housekeeper.” The remaining acres were sold, with the proceeds divided among his sons. Turning the Page

The Loudoun Board of Supervisors turned a fresh page in history on Feb. 15, 2022, when it voted to rename the area as the Bazil Newman Riverfront Park in honor of Newman’s accomplishments as a free Black man and probable collaborator in the Underground Railroad. The canoe launch was renamed Riverpoint Drive Trailhead. New signage has been installed.

Old Ox Brewery has announced a planned merger with the Silver Branch Brewing Company, based in Silver Spring, Md. While Old Ox is best known for its American style craft beers, Silver Branch has made a name for itself with European-style beers. And don’t worry — the Old Ox name won’t be going away. Both breweries plan to maintain their unique identities but will cross-promote each other’s brands across the greater Washington area. The merger is expected to be final later this year,

A new Thai restaurant is headed to Ashburn and it’s coming to a busy shopping center — but you might still have to hunt for it. The spot is sort of hidden. The restaurant is called ThaiTastic Thai Cuisine. It will be in the Ashbrook Commons shopping center, but it will be tucked behind the Jersey’s Mike sub sandwich shop at the back of the breezeway that runs between two buildings there. The space is only about 900 square feet. While we’re told it will have a few tables for dining in, much of the focus will be on carry out and delivery.

Roadhouse Momo & Grill is a new restaurant specializing in Nepalese cuisine. It’s coming to the Ashburn Village Shopping Center off Gloucester Parkway. The owners have released an artist’s rendering of what the new restaurant should look like. Previously, the space was home to the Urban BBQ Company and was very industrial, with exposed concrete and metal surfaces, but the new design has a much more elegant style. The restaurant plans a June 1 opening if all stays on track.
