ACS hosts career planning workshop By Paul Lara Belvoir Eagle

F

ort Belvoir hosts a spouse-only job fair on April 8, and Army Community Service is helping spouses craft a compelling federal resume, in preparation for the job fair, according to the manager of ACS’ Employment Readiness Program. Laureen DuPree conducted a federal resume class at ACS, Feb. 6, to a capacity crowd of interested spouses. She explained there are numerous steps to successfully land a federal job, and many people’s biggest hurdle may be making sure their resume rises above others and makes it to the ‘best-qualified’ group of applicants. DuPree stressed that, when examining the duties involved, you shouldn’t just think to yourself, “I can do that.” To qualify for most positions beyond entry level, hiring agencies want to interview someone who can say, “I have done that, and I’m the subject matter expert, with others coming to me for guidance.” She said that applicants must be well-versed in the specific, job tasks listed. Photo by Paul Lara

Critical self-assessment The self-assessment part of federal applications, said DuPree, is “no time to be humble. If you have trained others in that issue or policy, or if you evaluate others doing that, then that gives you a level of knowledge you can take comfort in. “For the majority of the assessment questions, if you can say ‘expert’ or ‘near expert,’ when relevant, then go ahead and apply. Remember you then have to substantiate that expert level of skills in your resume,” she said. For spouses who have worked in the corporate world, DuPree said one and two-page resumes are not suited for the level of detail required in federal applications. She suggested creating a ‘master’ resume that contains every skill you have learned, in as much detail as possible, then, use relevant sections from the master document to generate job-specific resumes for each job you’re interested in.

DOs and DON’Ts • Submit your application well before the posted deadline • Follow all procedures exactly

Housing News

• Don’t put hours worked or volunteered as a range; use an average instead • Don’t use full sentences, but start a phrase with a verb DuPree suggests applicants examine numerous jobs in the occupations you’re seeking, and see which key competencies are most-mentioned, as those are the ones you need to emphasize in your narrative summary.

Spouse preference Military spouses no longer need to register with Human Resources to attain spousal preference. Your claim to be considered is done by uploading relevant documents to the USAJOBS application. DuPree urged spouses to keep an eye out for vacancies that have interlocking wedding rings on the site, as that means spouses are given an additional benefit.

Employment Readiness offers one-on-one resume help throughout March. Employment Readiness also has 20 slots for virtual interviews with a coach, who can help those unable to schedule an appointment at ACS. DuPree said there will also be extended hours for the individual sessions March 25. Military spouses eligible to attend include spouse of an active-duty Service member; spouse of a Service member who is 100% disabled from a service-connected disability and unable to work; or an unremarried spouse of a Service member killed while on active duty. DuPree said the job fair allows people to explore career opportunities in law enforcement, immigration, travel security, prevention and response, cybersecurity, information technology, intelligence, emergency management, business operations, financial and mission support. BELVOIR HOUSING UPDATE Compiled by USAG Fort Belvoir Public Affairs

Service secretaries meet with housing execs By Army Public Affairs

S

ecretaries from the military branches met recently with senior executives from private housing companies to discuss ways to continue to improve housing for residents living on Army installations. “While the Army is making positive steps forward, we must continue to improve, in order to provide quality housing to our Soldiers and their families, including planning for future investments in Army housing,” said Ryan McCarthy, Army secretary. McCarthy noted that, since the last quarterly meeting in October, the Army has finalized a new incentive fee structure with private housing companies that puts families first and holds companies accountable. Meeting attendees discussed implementing housing provisions included in the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, including the dispute-resolution process; move in/move

out procedures; developing a common lease agreement; and the public availability of homemaintenance histories. They also discussed the need to review the BAH process to ensure BAHs accurately reflect market costs, to provide stability for families and the housing projects. “We have made significant strides over the last year to provide quality, safe and secure housing, but we have more work to do,” said Gen. Gus Perna, Army Materiel Command commander. “My vision is that every installation is a Soldier and family’s No. 1 choice to be stationed. We are focused on investment and reinvestment strategies to ensure long-term viability and quality of housing.” The recent meeting is the latest in a series of discussions where the Army and private companies have united to review strategies, programs, reforms and improvements. Last month, AMC hosted a housing summit at Redstone Arsenal, Ala., where Army leaders

from 60 installations joined representatives from the seven privatized housing companies to assess improvements made to ensure Soldiers and their families have access to high-quality, on-post housing. Cooperation between the Army and the private companies has led to housing improvements, including:  Hiring more staff at installation housing offices for quality assurance  Allowing garrison commanders full access to work orders so they can ensure issues are properly fixed the first time  Creating mobile apps to submit and track work orders  Establishing a Housing Environmental Health Response Registry and 24/7 telephone housing hotlines  Revising guidance on the oversight and management of privatized Army homes

Military spouse scholarship expands by Defense Department

M

ilitary spouses now have more flexibility to use the My Career Advancement Account Scholarship to pursue education and professional credentials. Fiscal Year 20’s National Defense Authorization Act expands the program to help pay tuition up to $4,000 for a license, certification or associate degree to pursue any occupation or career. If the military spouse, school and a Spouse Education and Career Opportunities career coach work to define a clear career path, called an education and training plan, the funds can be applied. Previously, MyCAA could only be used toward 13 defined fields and 170 careers. ‘’These expansions are part of a comprehensive suite of services that connect military spouses to education and employment opportunities, as well as support throughout relocations, deployments and the transitions inherent to military life,’’ said Joseph D. Ludovici, principal director for military community and family policy. The Defense Department’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program offers the MyCAA Scholarship program. Spouses of Service members in pay grades E-1 through E-5, W-1 through W-2, and O-1 through O-2 are eligible. Under the new law, spouses will remain eligible for the financial assistance if their sponsor is promoted above the eligible ranks, as long as they have initiated the process and have an

https://www.militaryonesource.mil/ approved education and training plan in place. ‘’MyCAA provides crucial tuition assistance to support spouses in identifying a career path in which they can grow and advance,’’ said

Lee Kelley, director of Military Community Support Programs. Military families move frequently, with as many as a third of Service members moving every year. These moves can make it difficult for military spouses to find work and advance in a career of their choice. MyCAA, and the corresponding support available through the SECO program, are all free resources provided by the DoD to empower military spouses to overcome employment challenges associated with military moves. SECO career coaches work with each spouse to help them define their education and professional goals and decide how best to apply the scholarship funds to support those goals. A RAND study of the program showed that Service members whose spouses use MyCAA were more likely to stay in service. The best way to get started is to call Military One Source at 800-342-9647 to connect with a SECO career coach. You can learn more about MyCAA and all of the services available to support military spouses at militaryonesource. mil; and see a list of participating MyCAA schools and detailed scholarship info at mycaa.militaryonesource.mil. The Spouse Education and Career Opportunities Program provides education and career guidance to military spouses worldwide, with free resources and tools related to career exploration and education. The program also offers free career coaching services six days a week.

Belvoir, Langley-Eustis square off in hoops By Rick Musselman Belvoir Eagle

O

n Feb. 2 at Graves Fitness Center, it was the Belvoir Eagles’ turn to face off against the undefeated top-ranked Joint Base Langley-Eustis Raptors, a team that has dominated the court throughout the season with a brand of surgical offensive precision that is seldom seen in any league short of the NBA. Combining a flawlessly choreographed passing game that has stymied every opponent the squad has faced this year with a relentless application of the half-court trap defense, the Raptors bulldozed its way into the winner’s circle, booking a 110-64 victory. Despite their opponents’ well-established advantage, the Eagles offense, spearheaded by guards, Jeff Legree, Deonte Bleach, Carlos

Gonzales and Jacob Culver, kept to the task at hand, driving the lane and hitting a few from the three-point arc as forward-center, Brandon Ehrlich, doggedly haunted the paint to pull down the rebounds. In the end, however, the Raptors maintained the onslaught throughout the contest and prevented the home squad from building any momentum. Smart ACFT training minimizes injury risk By Doug Holl Army Public Health Center

T

here are all of these new exercises … dead lifts, power throws, hand release push-ups, sprint-drag-carry, and the leg tuck. How do you build the needed core fitness strength? Is it possible to train for the ACFT without hurting yourself? Army Public Health Center experts say the key is to think like a Soldier-Athlete and “train smart,” by gradually increases the challenge to your body over time; using proper training form and technique for any new exercises; don’t ‘overdo it’ with the amount of weights or time training; seek alternatives when something doesn’t feel right and having the confidence to know your performance will progress. Maj. Timothy Benedict, an APHC physical therapist and Army Master Fitness Trainer, recommends Soldiers start training now and do as much as they can to gain control of their fitness and training plans.

Is the new ArmyCombat Fitness Test stressing you?

Too much, too soon “I would recommend Soldiers and leaders come up with a proactive plan, sooner rather than later,” Benedict said. “If Soldiers wait until the last minute to start training for the ACFT, it is more likely they will try and perform at a level their body is not yet accustomed to, and be at risk of injury. In addition, as Soldiers become more familiar with the tests, their confidence increases, which may also help reduce their

Leg tucks are the fifth event in the ACFT and tests upper body and core muscle endurance. chance of getting hurt.” Benedict says time is the No. 1 strategy to reduce the likelihood of injury with the ACFT. Many injuries are the result of doing too much, too soon. The more time Soldiers give themselves to train,

the more their bodies will adapt to the forces and perform better on these new tests. The ACFT website, army.mil/acft, provides recommendations for how to train for the ACFT events. “ … our leaders are … going

to make adjustments, as needed, to ensure Soldiers are ready for combat,” said Benedict. “Leaders should also be proactive and monitor profile rates in your units. If you see any spikes in profile rates, investigate how your unit is training and consider making some adjustments.” Benedict recommends a 12-week training program where Soldiers gradually increase their weight or effort for each event. He also recommends slightly decreasing the weight and increasing relative rest every fourth week, adding there are online programs and videos that demonstrate good techniques and how to train and progress at each event.

Maj. Timothy Benedict, an Army Public Health Center physical therapist, uses a foam roller to improve muscle tissue recovery, after a workout May 23.

“The No. 1 thing you can do to improve your performance on the leg tuck is to increase your upper body strength, followed by core strength,” said Benedict. “Spend some time working on pull-up progressions.” Benedict thinks the new ACFT reinforces the vision of the professional Soldier-Athlete. “We shouldn’t be overly afraid of the new fitness test because it is new or because it involves lifting weights. Instead, we should meet the challenge that I’m confident all Soldiers are capable of achieving,” he said.

Recycling program turns trash into dollars for Belvoir programs, facilities By Margaret Steele Belvoir Eagle n a time when local counties are ending curbside glass pickup in favor of regional collection centers, money from glass and other recycling on Belvoir still benefits the local, military community, financially. Vijay Ivatury, Belvoir’s Solid Waste and Recycling Program manager for Public Works’ Environmental Division, said selling the post’s recyclables has earned the installation more than $2 million over the last 10 years. Recyclables are collected from residents, facilities and agencies on post and average $10,000-$15,000 in refunds each month to Belvoir, its programs and facilities. Belvoir recycles cardboard; mixed and white paper; aluminum and steel; glass; plastics; car batteries and printer cartridges. Cardboard, by far, is the material that’s most recycled at Belvoir. “We won’t turn recyclables down, even if we have an abundance,” Ivatury said. In accordance with DoD policy and Army regulations, participation in the installation’s Qualified Recycling Program is mandatory for all installation activities, including mission partners and contractors. To recycle as much as possible, Ivatury

suggests residents and agencies rinse cans, jars and bottles before recycling. “In addition to the local MWR getting a percentage of those proceeds, the recycling program benefits the community by removing recyclables from the landfills and reducing an overall carbon footprint,” he said, adding Belvoir ships its recyclables to a Maryland processor, twice a month. Funds from recycling also go toward recycling-equipment maintenance and renovations at the recycling center, including new office space and windows and a renovated bathroom for the building, built in 1932. The Recycling Center also has a place to drop off yard waste which, in turn, creates garden mulch and compost is available to anyone. Maybe a lesser-known service the Recycling Center offers is a free vehicle weigh station for personally owned Photo by Paul Lara vehicles for people in a permanent change John Linan, Fort Belvoir Recycling Center manager, of station move. examines a pile of shredded documents at the Fort Belvoir “We weigh about 15-20 vehicles a day, more in the summer,” said John Linan, Recycling Center in this 2019 photo. the Installation Solid Waste and Recycling Contractor to Public Works. “We have the Recycling Center only state-certified weigh station in the Bldg. 1089 Weekdays, 7 a.m.-4 p.m. area that’s free. a n i h C George Washington’s Birthday n e d r a G Parade, covenant signing, open houses Monday By Garrison Public Affairs

O

ld Town Alexandria hosts a series of events, Monday, in honor of George Washington’s birthday. Festivities start at 10 a.m., with a Hunt for Washington, at the parade reviewing stand across from Market Square. In the game, adults and children can uncover clues about Alexandria and the country’s first president. Groups or people can join in the hunt, which takes about 1.5 hours. Museums and historic locations throughout Alexandria have free open houses, typically from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. They include Friendship Firehouse Museum, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, Old Presbyterian Meeting House, Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum and The Lyceum. The Concert at Market Square starts at 11 a.m., featuring bands, special choirs and non-marching groups. At noon, Alexandria’s mayor and commanders of major military installations in the area, including Belvoir, participate in a community covenant signing with the Quantico Belvoir

Regional Business Alliance. The event salutes veterans and active military. The highlight of the birthday observance is the mile-long George Washington Birthday Parade, the oldest and largest parade that celebrates Washington’s Birthday, from 1-3 p.m. Retired Rear Adm. Robert Shumaker is grand marshal. Complete details are available from washingtonbirthday.com.

Local historic church hosting commemorative service The Brotherhood of Saint Andrew, Pohick Chapter, sponsors a breakfast, after a commemorative service celebrating George Washington’s birth, Monday at Historic Pohick Church. The service starts at 8:30 a.m., and follows the Order for Morning Prayer taken from the 1662 English Book of Common Prayer, which is the service Washington followed in his usual Sunday worship at the church. The Docent Guild will conduct church tours after the breakfast. Tickets are $10 per person, $25 per family group. For tickets or more information, 703-339-6572. The church is at 9301 Richmond Highway, Lorton, at the corner of Route 1 and Telegraph Road. pohick.org
