Belvoir Students Learn Lifelong Skills with D.A.R.E. By Rick Musselman Sports Editor

ver the last four weeks some 250 third graders at Fort Belvoir Primary School learned from Fort Belvoir Police Department officers how to maintain a healthy, safe lifestyle and avoid drugs and violence by completing the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. The international D.A.R.E. initiative—established in the U.S. in 1983 by Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl Gates and the Los Angeles Unified School District—envisions “a world in which students everywhere are empowered to respect others and choose to lead lives free from violence, substance abuse and other dangerous behaviors,” according to the organization’s mission statement. Valentine’s Day History AD 268 – Emperor Claudius II of Rome orders no more marriages for soldiers during time of war. Saint Valentine defies the order and performs marriages in secret. AD 270 – Saint Valentine dies. The Catholic Church decides to celebrate St. Valentines feast in February to replace the pagan fertility festival Lupercalia and “Christianize” it. AD 1375 – English poet Geoffrey Chaucer refers to Feb. 14, Valentine’s feast day, as “the day birds and humans come together to find a mate” in a poem, connecting together, for the first time, the ideas of courtly love, romance and Valentine’s Day. AD 1537 – English King Henry VIII (yes, THAT King Henry the Eighth!) declared by Royal Charter that Valentine’s Day would be a public holiday, celebrated on Feb. 14. AD 1600’s – People start exchanging cards and letters for Valentine’s Day. AD 1840’s – Valentine’s Day cards begin to be mass produced. AD 1866 – Conversation hearts candy invented. Each box has approximately 45 sayings, including “True Love,” “Hug Me,” and “You Rock.” AD 1868 – The first heart-shaped boxes of chocolates were introduced. More than 36 million are sold each year (That’s 58 million pounds of chocolate!) Today – “Experience Gifts” are becoming popular, especially among millennials. 45 percent of people ages 18-24 and 40 percent of people ages 25-34 said they planned to give experiences for Valentine's Day.

From NCO, page A1 NCO. Serving in the military isn’t to be taken lightly or half-heartedly, he said. “As that young civilian transitions from civilian into Soldier and advances through the ranks to sergeant,” Brooks said, “not only have they chosen the path less chosen … but they have also demonstrated the leadership potential to excel and lead others along that very same path.” How each person became an NCO is different, but, for all of them, “they were ingrained and grounded in the Army values that were drilled into their subconscious since basic training” and continues to be reinforced throughout their subsequent leadership courses, he said. Each course is a time to reinforce what was learned, Brooks said. “Without reflection, there is no growth,” he said. “Be a steward of learning, because the Army thrives and evolves because learning organizations consist of learning individuals.” To be a good NCO, a Soldier must have the right kind of professionalism, discipline and attitude. The NCO must carry themselves well, take care of their uniform and appearance, be physically fit, and communicate clearly and respectfully. “Put your pride in one pocket and your ego in the other,” Brooks said

Soldiers will recognize … they will see that you are true.” Command Sgt. Maj. Richard A. Woodring, Military District of Wash-

ington, also spoke at the ceremony. “I don’t know how long I’ve been an NCO, but I know that I’ve been an NCO longer than my driver has been alive, and he’s 24 years old. I’ve been a sergeant major for about 13 years now,” said. He recalled a time when a sergeant major gave him advice before a deployment. “‘I want you to spend 15 minutes every day to make yourself bigger, stronger, smarter and faster.’ I thought about that, and I added one more. I put ‘richer.’ What I mean by that, and 15 minutes a day doesn’t seem like much, but over the course of a week that’s an hour and 45 minutes. Everything at this point, now that you’re a non-commissioned officer, is going to take time away from

Everything is going to take time away from you. Spend 15 minutes on yourself every day. It’s not selfish. It’s doing the right thing for you.” Instead of buying material goods, put the money you get in your Army career into investments, so that when you retire, you can “do whatever you want or do nothing,” he said. Richer means taking better care of you, Woodring said. “Someday we’re all going to take this uniform off. You need to spend that time, that 15 minutes, to make sure you’re setting yourself up for success on the outside world,” he said.

An R-4B Sikorsky helicopter is raised for its final flight in the National Museum of the United States Army, Feb. 5. This was the first helicopter in the world to be mass-produced.

O

n Jan. 31, staffers and construction crews with the National Museum of the U.S. Army carefully raised a war-bird aloft for its final flight. A UH-1B Huey helicopter was placed into what will be the Vietnam-era section of the museum, and, on Tuesday, one of the Army’s first operational helicopters, a 1940s R-4B Sikorsky was installed. The National Museum of the U.S. Army is a joint effort between The Army Historical Foundation and the Army. It is anticipated to become one of the largest tourist attractions in Fairfax County when it opens in 2020, drawing an estimated 700,000 visitors to its 84acre facility along Fairfax County Parkway. Activity over the last week focused on placing the two helicopters in the cavernous space before many other artifacts, like the Liberty Truck and Wright Flyer, can be installed. Tammy Call, museum director, said the 185,000-square foot facility will house personal experiences for the nation to appreciate. “I hope visitors will see their Veteran’s story – whoever they had in their family who served in the Army. They’re going to see those stories re-

Belvoir Eagles return home, win over JBAB By Rick Musselman Sports Editor After four weeks on the road, Fort Belvoir’s Eagles men’s division squad returned to Graves Fitness Center to take on Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in a high-velocity Washington Area Military Athletic Conference basketball showdown, Saturday. Maintaining a combination of precision passing and accuracy from all over the hardwood with a no-prisoners approach to man-to-man defense, the Eagles emerged on top, putting a 79-69 victory into the week-10 books. Belvoir’s teams—the Eagles and the Lady Eagles—compete annually in matchups played on weekends throughout the winter. The WAMAC season ends with a major double-elimination championship tournament. For weekly results, game schedules and standings, visit www.quickscores.com/wamac. For information about the Eagles sports organizations and the current season, contact Herb Marshall, Belvoir Eagles head coach, 703-798-0842, Herbert.D.Marshall@nga.mil.
