The character is an over-the-top Army officer who loses both his legs in Vietnam, sending him into a spiral of depression. He’s subsequently saved by the title character Forrest Gump’s optimism and innocence.

Fry is retiring in the spring after almost four decades of serving, Price said. “In all of those times, he has led with a spirit of integration that defines his true spirit, and that’s lived through his time in command, in directorship, of Fort Belvoir Community Hospital,” Place said. “Through his work, it’s clear to me that Capt. Fry knows that we cannot afford to allow silos or separation to affect combat casualty care that we provide to our troops in the field nor affect the efficiency or effectiveness of the management and administration of our enterprise.” Price expressed his gratitude to Fry for the focus he provided as director and said the hospital has a lot to be proud of with regards to readiness and advancement in medicine.

epresentatives from Fort Belvoir Garrison and some of its mission partners met last week at the O’ Club, for a quarterly update.

Programs and Partnerships After a briefing from Col. Michael Greenberg, Garrison commander, Mike Coleman said the Commonwealth of Virginia is interested in growing the military mission in Virginia and maintaining existing programs. Coleman, the military liaison for the state’s veterans and defense affairs, said the state’s economic impact from defense dollars is more than $102 billion. “Fairfax County gets more defense federal dollars than Florida does,” Coleman said. Coleman suggested Belvoir partners enter into agreements collectively, which streamlines the process and can mutually benefit all agencies and programs involved. “There are possible partnerships, not just for services, but for purchases, too,” he said, adding the commonwealth is willing to speak with Belvoir mission partners about requests and ideas.

Norris Henderson, also with Virginia’s veterans and defense office, said the new facility on Belvoir will include expert information about health-care benefits; VA disability and pension; and survivor, education and homebuying benefits that are available. Belvoir is the location for the state’s 33rd veteran’s office. George Dickson, MWR director, introduced the partners to school liaison officers, Wendy O’ Sullivan and Jamie Albers. Fry also sought the American College of Surgeons level three trauma accreditation for the hospital. Place said he was grateful for what Fry has done for the military medical community. “We look forward to continuing to see you make positive contributions, and wish you and your family a seamless transition,” he said. Fry talked about the positive outcomes accomplished while he was director, including delivering a 6-month premature baby they were able to save, and a cancer patient who gave a two-page letter thanking Belvoir Hospital for the care they received, adding that “it was an example of what we do day in and day out” to give their patients health, healing and hope.

New Leadership, Same Priorities

Navy Captain Robert Fry holds the hospital flag for the last time, as outgoing commander of Fort Belvoir Community Hospital on Tuesday.

Col. Rodney Gonzalez, Director, Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, speaks to the team during Change of Responsibility ceremonies at the Hospital on Tuesday. To Fry, Gonzalez said, “thank you for setting up the organization and getting it on the right path. Thank you for all that you have done.” Gonzalez said he was amazed at Fry’s stories during his speech, adding they show the heart of what they mean to do for the community.

Place welcomed the new commander, Gonzalez as the director. “Col. Gonzalez’s background, experience and expertise are uniquely suited to this moment for military medicine and Fort Belvoir Community Hospital,” he said. Place described Gonzalez as

having the key priorities he looks for including great outcomes, ready medical force, satisfied patients and a fulfilled staff. “As leadership changes, our priorities do not,” he said. Place said he was confident in Gonzalez’s ability to lead the team. “I look forward to this opportunity to drive us to getting those highquality outcomes that we strive (for), taking care of our warfighter, but also taking care of the warfighter family,” Gonzalez said.

From Sinise, page A1 “He’s (Lt. Dan Taylor) angry at God and angry at life and all of that, but he’s able to put that all in perspective and move on, and at the end of the movie, he’s rich he’s married and he’s standing up on two legs and he’s a whole different guy,” Sinise explained in a 2012 interview with 60 Minutes. That cinematic transformation made Lt. Dan, as Forrest Gump called him, into something of a role model for many wounded warriors. So Sinise, a talented bass player, decided to form Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band to tour and raise money for veterans and families. Eventually he started his own Gary Sinise Foundation.

Impacting Military Lives One veteran impacted by Sinise and his foundation is Maj. Jeremy Haynes, who is now medically retired after being shot four times in Afghanistan. Along with his wife, Sgt. 1st Class Chelsea Haynes and their eight children, the Gary Sinise Foundation is building an adapted smart home in Fairfax to meet Jeremy’s and the family’s needs. “It’s empowering, providing independence for myself as well as giving us a forever home, since a lot of homes we’ve looked at are not accessible,” Jeremy said.

Actor and author Gary Sinise, left, is greeted by Col. Michael Greenberg, Garrison commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Corey Perry in front of Garrison headquarters, Feb. 14. A Gold Star family was also there to get autographs and give some thanks. Miriam Hamilton was there with her son, Andru Nylander and daughter, Elisabeth. Capt. Nathan Nylander was killed in Afghanistan in 2011, and the family was introduced to another Gary Sinise Foundation program, Snowball Express, in 2014. The kids flew out to California for a concert. “When I say concert, it’s not ‘he’s over there, the kids are over here’ – it’s hands on,” Hamilton said. “The kids are on stage. The kids are jumping on him. He makes those kids feel like they are his.” This year, Snowball Express is taking the kids – all expenses paid

Sinise will perform for them, and hang out with them. “It’s just nonstop what he does for Gold Star Kids, and just shows them appreciation. We know you’ve lost your parent so here’s something just to let you know we care,” Hamilton explained. “We found out he was coming, and in my opinion, I feel we owe him for taking care of us.” Elisabeth Nylander says his warmth is so genuine. “They always have a Lt. Dan concert, and every time I’ve gone to Snowball Express, I’ve gotten to get up on stage and

sing with Gary. He makes it feel like we’re all best friends.” The Post Exchange ordered 600 books for the autograph session, and they sold out in a few hours. It seems that Sinise’s journey from self to service has grown larger than anyone had anticipated. “He’s an amazing man that does great things not just for veterans for but for this nation,” said Chelsea Haynes. Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band will be back, according to Sinise, on Fort Belvoir May 23 for another concert, as he continues to serve the nation.

Father Of Our Country, Community Covenant Celebrated In Old Town Story and photos by Paul Lara President George Washington

P

residents Day celebrated the 287th birthday of Gen. George Washington (his actual birthday is Feb. 22), the military leader who not only repelled British forces, but also stood up to assume a new role in the young republic: becoming president, serving a specified amount of time, then relinquishing power and leaving with an orderly, planned departure. His achievements were celebrated Monday, as the 40-year tradition of a George Washington Parade marched through Old Town Alexandria. A newer tradition was also observed Monday. For the past decade, The Quantico Belvoir Regional Business Alliance has coordinated a community partnership between the two military installations and the cities of Alexandria, Fredericksburg and Springfield, as well as Prince William, Fauquier and Stafford counties. This covenant recognizes that men and women in uniform – past and present, and their families, enhance the communities where they live. The covenant pledges to: •Create and encourage a strong relationship between the communities and the military and former military personnel and families who live and work there. •Educate everyone of the value and strength of having Service members, active and retired, and their families, living in their communities. •Assist community leaders in developing programs in support of our military, former military and their families. •Support and promote the principles of this community covenant in any way.

Col. Michael Greenberg, Fort Belvoir Garrison commander, was on hand with Command Sgt. Maj. Corey Perry, to sign the pledge and urge that collaborations continue between all parties. Also participating was Col. William Bentley III, Marine Corps Base Quantico commander, and Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson. After the covenant was signed, families gathered along the streets of Old Town Alexandria to take part in the 43rd annual Washington’s Birthday Parade.

Three Soldiers received the George Mason University "Made a Difference Award" for their personal impact to the Army's three components. The awards were presented during a ceremony at the EagleBank Arena, in Fairfax, Feb. 10. Master Sgt. Amanda Nolte, second from left, 249th Engineer Battalion (Prime Power), received the award on behalf of the active component. In her 20 years of service, she has responded to natural disasters, including hurricanes in Texas, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Other awardees were Master Sgt. Michel Sauret, center, 200th Military Police Command, U.S. Army Reserve; and Sgt. Yijin Huang, second from right, Army National Guard. The Fairfax-Lee Chapter of the Association of the U.S. Army sponsors the award. Ken Britt, far left, president, AUSA Fairfax-Lee Chapter; and Brad Edwards, far right, George Mason University athletic director, presented the awards to the Soldiers.

Functional Fitness: Dynamic, Metabolic, Extreme By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Fo r t B e l v o i r ’ s M W R i s answering the call of community members looking to get into better shape and maintain high fitness levels all year long. The functional fitness series is a specialized exercise program, offered in six-week cycles throughout the year, focusing on total-body conditioning through cardio, aerobics and core strength conditioning. There are seven lunchtime sessions on select days for Service members and civilians looking to take a break to stay Army Strong.

Belvoir Barracudas Team In Hoops Nail Biter By Rick Musselman Sports Editor

Belvoir Barracudas forward, Adrienna Christian, sets her sights on the hoop amid a crowd of Annandale defenders during a 5th grade girls' division matchup.

The Belvoir Barracudas 5th grade girls’ division squad squared off against visiting Annandale in one of the most defensively intense Fairfax County Youth Basketball League matchups of the season, Saturday at Specker Field House. Unfortunately for the home team, a final-seconds Annandale scoring rally allowed the visitors to triumph, 12-7. Despite the final outcome, the Barracudas held their own with an effective passing game, despite the relentless Annandale pressure. Point guard, Olivia Harrison, teamed up with Jaelynn Gaskins and Eden Foster, to unleash a rapid-fire passing game around the perimeter, connecting with center-forward, R.J. Brady in

the lane and forward, Adrienne Christian along the baseline for some early scores. At the opposite end of the hardwood, the home team succeeded in thwarting most scoring attempts from the visitors with a ferocious, double-team approach to defense. Heading into the second period with a narrow 7-6 advantage, the Barracudas ramped up the defensive efforts to include a nearly impenetrable full-court press. Guards, Hollin Horn, Gaby Aghelli and Mariah Hall, swarmed Annandale ball handlers en masse at the midcourt line, while Brady and forward, Mya Foster, worked to keep the lane in lockdown. In spite of the determination, Annandale succeeded in sinking a 2-pointer down along the baseline and an ensuing steal at midcourt enabled the visitors to capitalize

with another bucket from the high post. The curtains closed on Belvoir when Annandale drew a pair of fouls and put another 2 on the scoreboard via freebies from the charity stripe with 3 seconds left. Final score: Annandale 12, Belvoir 7. The Belvoir Barracudas regular basketball season runs through March and ends with a major championship tournament. For more information, call 703-805-9139. “We utilize all types of equipment, from barbells, dumbbells, kettle bells, jump ropes, battle ropes, med balls, slam balls and TRX straps,” he said. “On any given day you will utilize any of these pieces of equipment. However now, instead of repeating workout routines throughout the week, you get a new workout each and every day. Some classes you will rotate by repetition and other classes you will rotate by time.” --Calvin Simpson, lead functional fitness trainer.

The sessions are free and open to anyone interested in improving cardiovascular fitness and training the body as an integrated unit.

Training to Fit Your Needs Through Dynamic Training, Metabolic Conditioning and Extreme Training, this Armywide program engages military personnel and civilians in strenuous physical activity during hour-long sessions. For Soldiers, functional fitness works to develop skills to increase operational readiness by emphasizing mobility, strength, restoration and energysystem development. Dynamic Training focuses on gymnastics, body weight and functional movement exercises. Metabolic Conditioning involves a very high work rate, with exercises designed to burn more calories and maximize calories burned afterward, or your “afterburn.” Extreme Training focuses on speed, power, quickness and agility. Simpson added that the program provides all the tools and guidance to build total-body fitness. However, the results depend on how dedicated and driven a person remains through

program. “When it comes to the class itself, workouts range from dynamic exercises, metabolic conditioning and extreme conditioning,” he said. “You’re going to get out of the class exactly what you put into it. The class is designed for you to work at your own pace. “We get people with all different physical conditions and each is able to get a maximum workout. I encourage individuals to focus on their own goals and not worry about who’s to their left or their right.” Simpson said coordinators are expanding the program because of increasingly large turnouts and rededication to fitness across the post. Sessions of 40-50 people are not unusual.

Advanced Workouts Available For those looking for more intensity in their workouts, the Kawamura Human Performance Center on Gunston Road offers advanced workout programs with state-of-the-art machines and

expert trainers. Equipment includes power racks, Olympic weight lifting platforms with bumper plates, TRX suspension and rip trainers, kettle bells, dumbbells, battle ropes, prowler sleds, Concept2 rowers and medicine balls.

Pick Your Workout Belvoir MWR also offers a wide selection of cardio and aerobic exercise programs, with classes taking place at various times during the week. For the full schedule of activities, search belvoir.armymwr.com/programs/ fitness-facilities. The current functional fitness cycle runs through March, but you can join a session anytime. Sessions are Monday-Friday, 6-7 a.m., with lunchtime workouts Tuesday-Thursday, 11:30 a.m.12:30 p.m. Fo r i n f o r m a t i o n o n t h e functional fitness training program, email Simpson at calvin.m.simpson2.naf@mail.mil or search belvoir.armymwr.com/ categories/sports-and-fitness.

DLA Overwhelms OCAR In Intramural Hoops By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Reigning Commander’s Cup champion Defense Logistics Agency, undeniably one of the ablest squads taking to the hardwood this season, gave a highoctane exhibition of the passing, shooting and defensive vehemence that has kept the unit near the top of the FY19 intramural basketball rankings all year when it trounced Office of the Chief Army Reserve 67-28, Feb. 12 at Wells Field House. DLA’s success hinged on the passing precision between guards, Josh Kovalski, Chris Dickerson and Maurice Kirk. The trio of highly technical athletes kept the ball in constant motion around the perimeter, drawing defenders out of the zone to open up a nearly endless string of scoring opportunities for forwards, Ray Jones, and Kirk Gamblin. Veteran center, Farron Byrd, formed the lynchpin of the operation throughout the evening, haunting the lane and bringing down a string of boards and follow-up buckets. The OCAR defense, anchored by guards, Larry Crisp and Kittrell Henderson, faced a major obstacle from the opening horn when Kovalski gave an early

demonstration of his uncanny accuracy from the three-point arc which, combined with Kirk’s, Jones’ and Dickerson’s continual drives into the paint, propelled DLA to a 42-17 advantage at the halftime buzzer. OCAR managed to get an admirable comeback effort off the line late in the first period, with Crisp hitting a series of midrange shots while Henderson and forwards, Brian Kilgore and Andre Ansley kept busy down along the baseline. But the DLA defensive determination, combined with the squad’s continued execution at the opposite end of the court put the contest out of OCAR’s reach. The FY19 intramural basketball regular season wrapped up Wednesday. The single-elimination championship tournament between the 10 topseeded teams begins Tuesday, 6:15 p.m., at Wells Field House. For information about Fort B e l v o i r ’s i n t r a m u r a l s p o r t s program and the annual Commander’s Cup title race, call Justin Fitzgerald, 703-806-5093. Athletes can also contact their unit representative to sign up and get schedules. For scores, standings, and tournament results, search www. quickscores.com/belvoirmwr.
