National Army Museum construction continues Garrison Public Affairs The Army Historical Foundation’s, AHFs, private construction of the National Museum of the United States Army facility continues to progress on Fort Belvoir. Clark Construction Group, LLC has completed the museum’s concrete slabs and decking and the last structural steel beam was placed as part of the roof structure above the lobby in November. The museum’s exhibit wing now has a radiant heating/cooling floor and the structural steel support beams have been fireproofed. The signature exterior design elements of stainless steel metal panels and glass curtain wall are being hung. Construction is on schedule and the building’s estimated completion date is April 2019, when the Army will continue installing the exhibits and interior elements. The museum is expected to open to the public in about two years. Through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, Shirley Contracting Company, LLC continues to build the museum’s infrastructure, roads and utilities on the 84–acre site that will support the museum. Liberty Drive has been paved and a service drive and loading docks are being constructed. Work continues at the Fairfax County Parkway for turn lanes and the future traffic light at the museum’s entrance; and utility services infrastructure is progressing. “Creating the National Museum of the United States Army is a massive project with numerous stakeholders who are working together to ensure

A significant exterior architectural design element, stainless steel panels and glass curtain walls wrap the building’s exterior. success,” remarked Tammy E. Call, museum director. “We are proud that the National Army Museum is part of the Fort Belvoir community, and we look forward to welcoming visitors from Belvoir and from around the world.” When open, the Army will own and operate the museum with AHF operating the museum store, café and special events. Barden Education Center welcomes new site manager Submitted TaMekii Clark-Warrington, an education service specialist, is Barden Education Center’s new site manager. She came from IMCOM’s Army Garrison in Honolulu, where she led the daily operations of the Tripler Army Education Center. Clark-Warrington is a 30-year military spouse of a recently retired colonel. She thinks that, as an education services professional, her initiative-driven acumen and goal is to enable the successes of Service members (active, Reserve and retired), and their families as they pursue higher education. She wants to ensure that everyone knows about Barden Education Center and that its staff is available to serve. “Barden is a ‘one-stop shop’ about all education matters for active and retired Service-members, their families and civilians. Our services include developing a path, via counseling, to help everyone pursue their educational goals, whether it’s through getting an associate, bachelor’s or masters degree; or by completing a certification program,” she wrote. Barden Ed Center is unique in that it is one of the few Army Continuing Education Systems Centers to have both a National Testing Center and an Army Personnel Testing Center. The NTC is made possible through the support of Northern Virginia Community College. NTC exams include CLEP; DSST; NOVA English and Math placement exams; and others, including free exam proctoring. Testing is available Tuesdays through Thursdays, 8 a.m.-2:45 p.m. APT exams available are numerous* and are available Mondays through Thursdays from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Anyone who needs

TaMekii Clark-Warrington is Barden Education Center’s new site manager. either testing center may call 703805-9261. “This is a phenomenal, valueadded service that Service-members, families, retirees and Department of Army civilians should capitalize on accordingly,” ClarkWarrington said. Clark-Warrington wrote that her focus will be to add value and organization for everyone who lives and works on Belvoir. She plans to conduct more outreach on Belvoir, as she recognizes it’s sometimes difficult for people to have time to visit Barden. She’s already offered information at the Belvoir Exchange and hopes to branch out to Belvoir Hospital. The Family Housing Welcome Center at The Villages at Belvoir recently had some renovations. Above is the new reception area for house-hunters, and on the right is the Welcome Center’s new lounge.

Renovated welcome center opening at The Villages at Belvoir Submitted by Alex Rhoads Clark Realty Capital The Family Housing Welcome Center at The Villages at Belvoir is scheduled to reopen this month, after a 3-month renovation. Since its initial opening in 2006, the 5,000-square foot Welcome Center has been a first stop for thousands of military families assigned to Belvoir. The center’s new layout is designed to create a more inviting and functional space for residents and the management staff that serves them.

Developer Clark Realty Capital, the Army’s partner on the 2,154-home Villages at Belvoir community, drew inspiration from the popularity of the post’s six neighborhood centers when planning welcome center renovations. With the goal of creating more spaces for residents to work, meet or relax, the renovation includes dedicated lounge and reception areas with new furniture and finishes; an updated kitchenette and bathroom; and a children’s play area. Upgrades also include efficient water fixtures and LED lighting. The Welcome Center is also a “net zero” building, with solar panels on the

rooftop which generate power for the office space. The Welcome Center is in Fort Belvoir’s Town Center, a main-street-style mix of residential and retail buildings. The first of its kind on a military installation, the Town Center has served as an example replicated across the military since its construction in 2006. “On behalf of the entire team, we are proud to improve the customer experience for all Service members and families who visit the Welcome Center,” said Alex Rhoads, development executive with Clark Realty Capital.

AER opening honors fallen Soldier By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer The Army Emergency Relief campaign kicked off with a ceremony that honored Spc. Jeremy Darrell Tomlin, a 22-year-old UH-60 crew chief who was assigned to the 12th Aviation Battalion. “Jeremy was a truly great person and an amazing friend,” said Sgt. Nicholas Rossi. “Those who were lucky enough to know him will forever be blessed. He was a great Soldier and always brought light and a smile to each person, no matter the day or situation, and usually with his heavy Southern drawl. He is our brother and he will forever be missed by us all.” Tomlin died in an aircraft crash in Leonardtown, Md., in April. Two other crewmen were injured. Tomlin, a native of Chapel Hill, Tenn., joined the Army as a UH-60 helicopter repair technician in 2012. He completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Benning, Ga.; and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Eustis, Va., where he earned the Aircrew Member Badge for the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. He also served in Germany and conducted multiple NATO missions. He returned to the U.S. in 2015, when he was assigned to C Company (CONAIR), 12th Aviation Battalion, Davison Army Airfield at Belvoir, where he served as a UH-60L helicopter crew chief. Tomlin is survived by his wife, Jessica. AER offers help to families like the Tomlins. It provides emergency financial assistance to Soldiers and their families, mostly from

Lt. Col. Brendan Cullinan, 12th Aviation Battalion commander, remembers Spc. Jeremy Tomlin at the Army Emergency Relief Campaign kick-off, March 1 in Wood Theater. Tomlin’s wife Jessica received AER emergency funds when he was killed in a helicopter crash last year. donations to the program, according to the AER website. Assistance comes in the form of interest-free loans, grants, and partial loans and grants. “His tragic loss … has deeply affected our battalion, even today, nearly a year later,” said Lt. Col. Brendan Cullinan, 12th Aviation Battalion commander. He added that the loss

the battalion felt paled in comparison to what Tomlin’s family and friends felt. Cullinan said Tomlin had great character and was actually afraid of heights but still got his first job working with Black Hawks. Tomlin, like many other Soldiers, was willing to serve, was devoted to his fellow Soldiers and had an “inclination to protect our nation.” “It’s the Jeremy Tomlins of the world that you all help when you donate to the Army Emergency Relief fund,” Cullinan said. Last year, AER throughout the world assisted more than 43,700 military families by contributing a total of $60.7 million, according to Marie Robinson, who works in strategic initiatives and planning for DFMWR. Most of the contributions to military families are possible through donations from retirees and active-duty Soldiers. AER exemplifies how Soldiers help each other in times of hardship or tragedies, said Lt. Col. Christopher Tomlinson, Fort Belvoir Garrison commander. In 2017, more than $500,000 from Belvoir contributors helped support military families. “I think this kickoff and the respect we give Spc. Tomlin provides an excellent backdrop, context, and perspective of why we do what we do,” Tomlinson said. “As we celebrate his life and service, we also celebrate what AER means and that is a concerted effort of all of us coming together providing contributions to continue to do what this great program does.” For information about AER and how to donate, visit www.aerhq.org. Were you ready for the wind? Prepared for the next disaster? Submitted by Jonathan Kiell Community Emergency Response Team Instructor Disasters, disruptions, and emergencies happen, and frequently at the most inconvenient time. Preparing for emergencies before they occur can help save time, money, property and lives! Northern Virginia gets its share of hurricanes, winter storms, and the occasional tornado, earthquake, derecho, Nor’easter or wind storm; and our region is periodically disrupted by potential terrorist threats. We also seem to have power outages and major traffic problems fairly regularly. Being prepared for disruptions is even more important if you are responsible for others, including children, an elderly or disabled family member, or family pets. Being prepared is simply good sense. Do you have a family plan? Do you have emergency supplies for your family and pets if the power is out and the roads are closed for a few days or longer? What are your plans if you have to evacuate? What supplies are in your car right now? What if someone gets sick or hurt and rescue crews cannot get to you right away because they are busy elsewhere? These are all important questions and there are good answers. Fairfax County participates in a national program, sponsored by Homeland Security and FEMA, that trains and prepares the general public for all kinds of disasters and the training is free. Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, training is presented by certified instructors in eight 3- to 3.5-hour sessions, for a total of about 25 hours of training. The training is informative; practical; hands on; challenging; and fun. Participants must be at least 16 years old. Belvoir is partnering with Fairfax County to offer this free training on Belvoir, particularly to people who live or work on post, or others who frequent post. Enrollment for the next Belvoir class is underway. The class is Thursdays from 6:30 – 10 p.m., Thursdays from March 22 to May 10.

CERT training includes info on prevention, preparation, protection and recovery for an incident. There are no prerequisites and anyone

16 or older can take the course. Interested people are asked to go to www.fairfaxcountycert.org and follow the prompts to register

The 52 campsites offer all the standard amenities to allow campers to enjoy the basic comforts of home during their stay, including complete hook ups; water, sewer and electric; and even a Wi-Fi connection. The winter Olympics is unquestionably my favorite sporting event to watch—even over MLB baseball; the NFL; and, unbelievably, world title surfing. It may be because I discovered alpine skiing at such an early age and became instantly fascinated with the all-time great skiers of my era—Ingmar Stenmark, Phil and Steve Maher, Pirmin Zurbriggen, Peter Muller and Leonhard Stock. Indeed, my dream—despite living in Virginia—was, one day, skiing those same mountains in World Cup competition. I even used their equipment brands, hoping to gain an edge. Well, fame never materialized but that didn’t take the excitement away from watching all the new phenoms come up through the alpine ranks in the ensuing years. And, of course, the games at PyeongChang this year were no different. Indeed, when I couldn’t watch the telecasts, I recorded them for late-night catch-up sessions. In between events, it did occur to me how much the Olympics has changed over the years—specifically, how many more sports are included, just in snow-related activities. Now, when I was coming up, we had three basic disciplines— slalom, giant slalom and downhill. Certainly, there was also cross country and ski jump, but I never really followed those only because cross country looked too much like work and ski jump looked too much like an engraved invitation to a body cast. By today’s standards, that selection looks like pretty slim pickings for ambitious young athletes. On top of those five, they’ve added super giant slalom, alpine combined and nation team event. Then, when snowboarders were invited to the Games, they included yet another spectrum of snow sports that we never would have dreamed up back in the day—events like half-pipe, slopestyle, snowboardcross, big air and parallel giant slalom. Now skateboarders, motocross bikers and surfers can cross over to the snow and compete at the Olympic Games, performing all the tricks they’ve developed on the concrete, dirt and water. While I suppose these new sports give a wider range of athletes an opportunity to go for the gold, as a bit of a purist, I still think things like half pipe and big air should stay at the skate park and the beach. Just saying.

Belvoir Soldiers, civilians try out for elite softball team By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Despite strong winds and bitterly cold temperatures, more than 30 military and civilian Belvoir community members converged on North Post Field, Saturday to try out for positions on the installation’s 2018 elite-level coed softball team. According to Justin Fitzgerald, Fort Belvoir’s intramural sports league coordinator and sports facility manager, the aim of the softball program is to give more accomplished players another chance to compete outside of the annual Commander’s Cup intramural league. “We play in the Fairfax County adult league and we’re hoping to build it up to a WAMAC (Washington Area Military Athletic Conference, a competitive sports program for military personal assigned to duty stations across the Military District of Washington) level,” he

said. “Anyone who is assigned or attached to Fort Belvoir can participate in this, and we’re having a great turnout.” Fitzgerald added the tryouts are open to males and females and prospective men’s division players will have another chance to demonstrate their skills to coaches and league coordinators, Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The women’s division tryout schedule will be announced soon. The teams are open to active duty, Reserves, retirees and DoD civilians who work on Belvoir. The prospects spent the morning engaging in infield and outfield drills, demonstrating their ability to take and maintain control of the ball in their throws to the bases, and dialing in their prowess from the batter’s box. More information about Belvoir’s coed softball program is available from Fitzgerald, 703806-5093, Justin.c.Fitzgerald.naf@ mail.mil.

Command and General Staff School visits State Department By Fredrick Sanders and Lt. Col. Aric Raus Army CGSS, Fort Belvoir Satellite Campus Students and faculty of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff School’s Fort Belvoir Campus attended a Diplomacy, Development and Defense Senior Leader Round Table discussion on interagency coordination at the U.S. Department of State Headquarters in Washington, D.C., last month. The panelists included Dolores Brown, senior foreign service at the State Department; Patrick Antonelli, director of stability and peace operations in the Office of the Secretary of Defense; Stephen Gonyea, civilian-military operations division chief at USAID; and Alan O’Donnell, interagency integrator in the Joint Staff ’s Operational War Plans Division. They provided students with lessons learned and best practices, along with personal experiences with interagency coordination at tactical, operational and strategic levels. During a question and answer period, the group of veteran interagency leaders provided recommendations on how Defense Department interaction with various interagency partners can be improved; addressed some of the challenges associated with interagency operations; and discussed the importance of leadership and understanding the personalities of the people you will work with. This event enhanced the students’ understanding of interagency operations and supplemented the common core curriculum for strategic context, which is designed to increase the student’s understanding of international security and national security organizations. The CGSS students were accompanied by

Mount Vernon Plaza Shopping Center, 7678-D Richmond Highway, Alexandria, VA Hilltop Village Center, 7873 Heneska Loop, Alexandria, VA (Near the intersection of Telegraph Road and Beulah Street) Federally insured by NCUA. 1Product features subject to approval. 100% financing loans may include an additional funding fee, which may be financed up to the maximum loan amount. Available for purchase loans only. 2Special offer available for purchase and refinance first mortgages. Certain product exclusions may apply. You must lock your rate with Navy Federal prior to submitting rate match request to qualify for this offer. Loan Estimate from competing lender must be dated and received within three calendar days of locking your interest rate at Navy Federal. Please note that other documentation used to show competitors’ terms will not qualify for offer. The terms of the competing loan must be identical to Navy Federal’s loan; for example, a 30-year, fixed-rate product with mortgage insurance is not identical to a Navy Federal 30-year, fixed-rate product that does not have mortgage insurance. If the loan does not close within the commitment period, the rate match may be voided. Note: The initial Loan Estimate from a wholesale lender/broker is not an acceptable document for a rate match submission unless the Lender Information section on the Loan Estimate is completed. To receive $1,000, you must provide a signed, executed copy of the final Closing Disclosure and a copy of the mortgage note within 30 calendar days of your loan closing with the original competing lender. Offer not valid if original loan terms or conditions change prior to closing. Once approved, $1,000 will be automatically deposited into your Navy Federal account within 30 calendar days of receiving the necessary documentation. Recipient is solely responsible for any personal tax liability arising out of this incentive. 3Cash back from $400 to $5,050 is available in most states. No cash back in AK, LA, MS, OK. The program is not available in Iowa or outside the U.S. You must register with RealtyPlus before contracting with a real estate agent and be represented by the assigned RealtyPlus real estate firm at closing to qualify. Standard listing fees apply. Contact RealtyPlus for terms and conditions. © 2018 Navy Federal NFCU 10153-A_belvoir (2-18)
