The Secretary of Army, Mark Esper, visited Fort Belvoir Tuesday, to meet post senior leaders on the state of readiness and how they can plan for any upcoming changes to the military. “We need to improve our deployability numbers, first of all,” he said about what he thinks the Army needs to do to continue to modernize. “Next, we need to build the next generation of combat fighting vehicles, of aircrafts, of weapons systems.” Building systems that are unmanned, minimally manned or autonomously manned is important, Esper said. Other things the military can continue to do is improve on processes and procedures to make the military more

Since his confirmation by the
senate in November, he said he’s enjoyed visiting Soldiers all over the world. “The highlight has been traveling the Army everywhere across the U.S., from Fort Bragg to Fort Irwin, and abroad from Korea to
Europe to Afghanistan, just to see our Soldiers,” he said. “Just to see what a great job they are doing — all components — active, Guard and Reserve, working together in defense of our nation. It’s been such a great thing to see and to get a good feel for what the Army is doing these days.” Esper has a master’s degree in public administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a doctorate in public policy from George Washington University. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1986 and retired from the Army Reserve in 2007. He thanked Service members for their dedication to the military. “There are a lot of opportunities for men and women out there and for them to serve their country, to sacrifice and do what they do — thank you very much,” Esper said.

Karen Pence visits Belvoir’s NICOE By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Karen Pence, wife of U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, stopped by Fort Belvoir’s National Intrepid Center of Excellence, Intrepid Spirit Center, to get a firsthand look at its art and music therapy programs, which help Service members who have traumatic brain injuries. At NICOE, professionals from several disciplines evaluate and compile an individualized treatment plan for each patient. “It’s phenomenal,” Pence said about the center. “The thing that is so amazing is how they integrate everybody together.” The center, which is part of Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, helps active-duty Service members, veterans and their families with issues, including Post-Traumatic Stress. Pence toured the facility and spent time observing a Service member, his wife and children during an art therapy session. She also spoke with several professionals, including Jessica Herman, art therapist; Megan Wong, music therapist; and Dr. Nichole

Sometimes, Service Members come back from deployment and don’t understand why they are having difficulties functioning after returning, Pence said. “One of the things we’ve learned, as we’ve been trying to learn more about art therapy, is when you have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, that part of the brain that is damaged is not the verbal side of the brain,” she said. “So, you have Service members who can’t express what’s going on. They don’t know how to tell you the stress they are dealing with. So, the fact they can do art or music therapy and get to those emotions and deal with them and work through them is powerful.” These therapies are important because they help to heal the brain, Pence said. For example,
Karen Pence, wife of Vice President Mike Pence, center, arrives at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence on Fort Belvoir, March 7 for a facility tour. pictures taken before and after music therapy show a difference in the brain. “You can actually see that new pathways have been formed,” she said. “The brain can actually be healed.” Art and music therapy also help with pain management, Pence said. Music and art therapy can help those with pain management. A patient who may be struggling with physical therapy may be sent to art therapy or music therapy, because it gets the patients in a “better frame of mind and helps them get rid of some of the pain they are dealing with. Then, they can come back and work on physical therapy.” “It’s really seeing everybody work together that’s so powerful,” she said of the collaborative efforts at NICOE.

Belvoir fire personnel help in Alexandria By Garrison Public Affairs Early Sunday morning, Fort Belvoir Fire and Emergency Services personnel provided mutual aid to Fairfax County and Alexandria fire departments, at a building fire not far from the George Washington Memorial Parkway in the Mount Vernon area of Alexandria. The Belvoir units were part of a multiple-jurisdictional response to a large, singlefamily dwelling fire. The fire began in the mechanical room in the basement and, due to its age and construction type, quickly spread throughout the structure with fire on all four floors, including the basement and attic. The event escalated to multiple alarms that brought more than 25 responding fire units and 60 firefighters. Fort Belvoir FES units helped in firefighting activities in offensive and defensive postures. The fire was brought under control after an hour and a half and de-escalated after about 2 hours. Units from Belvoir that participated were: Battalion Chief 465; Engines 465 and 466; and Truck 463.

Science Fair! By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Students at Fort Belvoir Upper Elementary School showed off their science skills March 7, during the annual STEAM/Science Fair and Kids Lab Night. The event displayed kindergarten through sixth-grade students’ science fair projects, and gave families a chance to learn and develop their STEAM skills with interactive, hands-on activities throughout the school. STEAM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics; is a studentcentered instructional model, according to the Fairfax County Public Schools website. The ability to fund STEAM program is due to funding from the Opera-
tion Patriotic Steam program, which provides in-school activities, extracurricular activities, technology and science lab equipment and STEAM support staff. Fort Belvoir Elementary Campus gets grant funds by parents completing Impact Aid forms sent to parents each year. Operation Patriotic Steam focuses on developing student’s math, science, critical thinking and reasoning skills … all 21st century skills. The Department of Defense Education Activities also funds the program. Operation Patriotic STEAM and the county’s school district co-hosted the event. Operation Patriotic STEAM started at Fort Belvoir Elementary in fall 2010. Students from Marymount University helped judge the competition.

B Section DTRA opens volleyball season with 3-game sweep over NGB By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Defense Threat Reduction Agency, one of the ablest squads in Belvoir’s intramural leagues with more Commander’s Cup trophies at its headquarters than any other unit on post, kicked off the FY18 volleyball season in customary fashion, sweeping the National Guard Bureau 3-0, March 6 at Wells Field House. DTRA’s lineup of veteran athletes, including T.J. Dierks, Greg McIntyre, Brian Poser and Dave Petersen, burst from the starting gate with an offensive onslaught that resulted in a 9-point advantage three minutes into the contest. Capitalizing on the picture-perfect bump-and-set choreography executed by Joyce Gamboa, Christie Myers and Danielle Smith, Dierks and Poser repeatedly drilled the ball to the floor for scores. The building momentum quickly propelled DTRA to a 21-10 victory to open the three-match series. But NGB, despite a short-staffed roster, came roaring back in the second exchange, staying within 2 points of their legendary oppo-

Foultner and Tammy Tucker joined forces with J’vanne Yancy and Jennifer Joseph to minimize DTRA’s gains with a series of diving saves. Only a late-match pair of spikes from Dierks and McIntyre granted DTRA a narrow 21-19 win. DTRA, clearly recognizing its opponent’s increasingly dangerous precision in the backcourt and at the net, focused all efforts on defense. The adjustment paid immediate dividends when a string of saves by Gamboa, Petersen and Smith enabled Dierks and Poser to regain the edge with another run of spikes that ultimately resulted in a 21-14, match-3 victory and the 3-0 series sweep. Volleyball matches are played Tuesdays and Thursdays through April 3. The season culminates with a single-elimination championship tournament between the eight top-ranked teams. Timeout Absent-minded, but fit By Rick Musselman Sports Editor You’ve heard the old saying about how some people would lose their heads if they weren’t attached to their shoulders. Well, while it may not do much for my reputation, I’m here to say that I, evidently, hold a fairly high ranking in that collective of forgetful, absent-minded unfortunates. I haven’t lost my head yet, which is pretty miraculous considering how flighty I’ve been for most of my life, at least when it comes to forgetting things—usually when I’m leaving the house in the morning and I’m running short on time. Indeed, I’ve done everything from forgetting my camera equipment when I was on my way to cover an event to leaving my suitcase in the kitchen when I was leaving on a week-long vacation. Even worse, I’m usually well down the road before I even realize it. In my own defense, I’ve come to see it as a casualty of the “artistic temperament,” in that I’m obviously thinking about more stimulating things than photo gear or overnight bags. Well, a few days ago I had yet another round-and-round-themulberry-bush morning and had to go back upstairs to my home office three separate times—once to retrieve my event notebook; then my thumb drive with all the event photos on it; and then the lanyard that has my CAC and ID hanging from it. After the third trip, as I stood slightly winded at the bottom of the stairs, it occurred to me that at least I’m getting a morning workout. And from what I’ve read, starting one’s day with some physical exertion has some benefits to overall health, especially, as my doctor and dentist are fond of pointing out, “for a man my age.” Maybe that’s why I’m in such good shape at 51 years old—I do multiple daily stair climbs. I can’t remember where I put my own food bowl but my cardiovascular system’s good. Who’d have thought something like this would develop. For years I’ve wanted to exercise more and here I’ve been doing it without even trying. This epiphany is almost as big as when I realized the most sure-fire way to avoid illness is to become a totally committed hypochondriac.

Belvoir father and son medal at state TaeKwonDo tournament Submitted by Lt. Col. Aric Raus Members of a Fort Belvoir family brought home four medals from the Maryland State TaeKwonDo National Qualifier, Feb. 24, prepping the way to the USA TaeKwonDo National Championships in Salt Lake City, this summer. Lt. Col. Aric Raus, an instructor at the Command and General Staff School, won the gold in men’s ultradivision lightweight sparring; silver in the men’s master-division forms; and a silver medal in the 18-32 yearold division bantam sparring. Eight-year-old Michael Raus Ocasio earned the bronze in cadet lightweight, sparring from a field that included members of the U.S. National Team. The family, including Raus’ wife, Victoria Ocasio, has been competing in TaeKwono for more than four years. Together, they participated in the 2016 U.S. National Championships in Richmond, Va., where the family brought home six medals in sparring, forms and board breaking. Victoria and Raus also volunteer as referees at local, state and national-level tournaments. Raus credits his son’s interest in tae kwon do for getting him back into the martial art after a 20-year hiatus. When he realized he could make it to most of his practices, Raus decided it was something they could do together.

https://pcsmypov.com https://www.ustranscom.mil being early doesn’t guarantee they will get the dates they want, Freese said. The U.S. Transportation Command’s official Department of Defense moving portal suggests moving on days that aren’t popular, including the middle of any month, as those days are usually more available than the beginning or end of a month. TransCom observes PCS Week, beginning Monday. People getting ready to PCS should also take photos of their property before the move, including pictures of the home’s condi-
tion before the movers get there. You can also take videos of electronics to show them working, in case they are damaged during the move. That way, you’ll have proof of damage, according to the TransCom moving portal website. Another tip is to mark or block off items or areas as “do not pack.” Those items would be things you need during the trip to your new location, important items, or things you don’t want the movers to pack.
