ast year, Army Emergency Relief at Fort Belvoir provided more than $500,000 in loans and grants to Soldiers, units, retirees and family members and received $196,000 in donations. Last week, program officials and leaders met and opened Fort Belvoir’s AER for the season. U.S. Army Garrison Fort Belvoir Commander, Col. Michael Greenberg said organizers would like everyone, from leaders on down, to be engaged in the annual AER effort. “We can do this by donating as much as possible and by spreading the word to Service members and families who could potentially benefit from Army Emergency Relief funds,” he said.

Love of music is hard-wired in us And it’s time to get back in the groove By Paul Lara Special to the Eagle

M

usic universally moves us - no matter the age or mental state - from pre-natal infancy to post-Alzheimer’s dementia, and music seems to connect with our brains. “It’s as if we are hard-wired for it,” said Joshua Schrader, CEO with Capital Music Therapy Services. Neo-natal ICUs now have devices that play music to preemies if they suck on a digital pacifier, and it helps them develop crucial nursing skills to thrive. Elderly dementia patients who have lost the ability to speak, upon hearing a favorite song, can suddenly sing along. Schrader says that same innate connection to music can be used to reach and calm children on the autism spectrum, as he spoke to parents in the Exceptional Family Member Program at ACS March 27. Some of the clinical observations that Schrader used to underscore music’s power: ♪When two people play music together, their brainwaves begin to synch ♪Music can assist with memory, focus

Motorcycle safety steers for safer riders, better drivers By Paul Lara Special to the Eagle

T

here’s no bumpers, no roof, and when you stop, a motorcycle falls over. That inherent instability is compounded by reduced visibility to drivers, adding to the risk of riding motorcycles. To promulgate safety, all active-duty personnel must pass the Basic Motorcycle Rider Couse to ride on post. Scott Bruning, who runs the motorcycle program for the Garrison Safety Office, encourages drivers to attend this course as well,“because it makes them a better car driver also, when they’re more aware of the challenges of motorcyclists, and …the situational awareness that’s required.” The two-day course is free, and leave cannot be charged for activeduty service members who attend. These motorcycle safety classes are distinguished in a couple ways: it has a dedicated motorcycle range, next to DAU, where there is enough room to learn important maneuvers at traffic speeds, and because Fort Belvoir houses all five branches, the Safety Office was given permission from the National Capital Region to train all active-duty, Guard and Reserve members. Doel Malave, a Private First Class with the Old Guard, is impressed with the course. On the second morning of the Basic Rider Course, he transitioned from an unsure, wobbly rider to a more confident Soldier. “This class has been my first time riding – period, …and I have to say I’ve learned a lot,” Malave said. “It’s a lot of things you need to do simultaneously, and with some practice, it feels a little more natural than it did yesterday.” Within a year of passing the Basic Rider Course, active motorcyclists must then take the Advanced Rider Course. Additionally, anyone returning from a deployment of more than 179 days must get a TDY refresher course. Bruning stresses that the most important lesson in the class is improving situational awareness. “Riding a bike is an intense experience, and it requires your

•Prepare for the unexpected when you travel, carry extra cash or credit card to deal with an emergency. •Drivers are reminded to be on alert for motorcycles, especially when pulling out into or across traffic, and when changing lanes. •Motorcycle riders need to wear proper riding gear and take advantage of motorcycle training safety courses. •Don’t forget to protect your eyes also. Use a full face-shield or goggles. Glasses or sunglasses don’t protect your eyes from the wind, which can cause your eyes to water and impair vision. •Motorcycle riders should also remember to look out for potholes, loose sewer lids, and loose gravel. n March 19, a semi-truck full of Keurig Dr. Pepper coffee K-Cups were delivered to the chaplains at Army Cyber Command Headquarters by Holy Joe’s Café. Holy Joe’s Café is a nonprofit organization whose primary mission is to deliver coffee to deployed military chaplains in the hopes of giving them a ‘taste of home’ while they serve overseas. According to the Holy Joe’s Café’s website, they organize deliveries of “coffee and supplies to hundreds of military locations” with the help of generous coffee donations from the Keurig Dr. Pepper Company and free trucking services from CFI, Contract Freighters, Inc. ARCYBER’s Deputy Chaplain, Lt. Col. Scott Bullock, reached out to Holy Joe’s founder and Executive Director, Tom Jastermsky, hoping to receive coffee for his Soldiers. While not a deployed unit, there are reasons the chaplain believes ARCYBER is worthy of receiving the coffee donation. “ARCYBER is a unique command that runs 24-7 operations protecting the defense computer network,” said Bullock, “A little ‘Cup of Joe’ can go a long way.” Holy Joe’s organized a delivery of approximately 60,000 K-Cups and ground coffee from Keurig Dr. Pepper for the chaplains at ARCYBER. “This is a way for a charity donation to say ‘Thank You’ to the military, and we’re very appreciative of Tom (Jastermsky), Holy Joe’s Café, Keurig Coffee and CFI in coming together to make this donation to Soldiers.” According to Jastermsky, Holy Joe’s Café chooses to bless military chaplains with coffee donations because chaplains are there for any Soldier, anytime, no matter what. Chaplains do a variety of services, he explained, such as conducting ministry, leading faith exercises, counseling, helping with moral decisions and so much more. Jastermsky said he believes a cup of coffee will help amplify the chaplains’ mission by providing an opportunity for them to connect with those they serve. Bullock said he believes this coffee will give the chaplains at ARCYBER, along with the other chaplains who received the donations, the opportunity to get Soldiers and their families ‘in the door’ and truly connect with those they serve every day. He said these donations will reinforce the Soldiers belief that Americans appreciate what they do and the sacrifices they make. Bullock wanted to share with other organizations in the area. On delivery day he ended up donating coffee to chaplains at the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command Headquarters, the Fort Belvoir Religious Support Office, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Fort Meade’s Religious Support Office and Fort Meade’s 780th Military Intelligence Brigade.

Ladies Golf Association starts 2019 season By Rick Musselman Sports Editor The Ladies Golf Association of Fort Belvoir welcomed new and returning members to the season with its annual membership meeting, March 25 at the Golf Club. The yearly spring event increases organization awareness and invites local female golfers to learn about the league and consider membership. According to Marlea Moriarty, association president, six new players signed up for this year’s schedule. Tim Coolican, Golf Club general manager, opened the meeting with a brief discussion about course feature updates, new equipment and the green fee schedule for the season; and Fritz Diekmann, PGA head professional at Belvoir, added information about new Pro Shop items, tournaments and pricing specials for select events. LGAFB board members—which included Vice President Pam Chaney, Secretary Helene McInnis, and Treasurer Kim Kohler—outlined changes to the rules, current rates and details about the major tournaments the organization will be hosting in 2019. Golf Club staff provided attendees with a breakfast buffet. The LGAFB is open to all female golfers eligible for membership at the Fort Belvoir Golf Club. Weekly play is Tuesday mornings (shotgun-start format), April through October. Annual dues are $65 for 18-hole group play and $10 for 9-hole group play. The LGAFB, formed in 1957, gives female golfers a chance to share their enthusiasm for the sport in a socially competitive environment, according to a LGAFB press release. For weekly play dates, groups are comprised of players from various flights, based on handicap, and recognition is given to winners based on their individual flights. The LGAFB also hosts several special events at the Golf Club each year, including the Spring Match tournament slated for mid-June, the Memorial and Wounded Warrior tournaments in August, and the Fall Championship between the most accomplished golfers in the league in September. LGAFB members can also meet, socialize and compete with their
