INSCOM hosts Memorial Day commemoration By Sgt. Jeff Storrier INSCOM Public Affairs The U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command held a commemorative ceremony to honor some of America’s fallen military intelligence heroes at Belvoir’s Nolan Building, May 25. Michelle Ballard, wife of Maj. Gen. Christopher Ballard, INSCOM’s commanding general, performed the National Anthem. Ballard followed his wife’s beautiful rendition with some heartfelt words of his own. “After three decades in uniform, I‘ve come to view Memorial Day, also, as a day to think about the future, even as we pay homage to the past,” he said. Ballard reflected on the sacrifice of INSCOM personnel from the past, before taking a moment to ponder the upcoming 40th anniversary and beyond of the organization he now commands. “Let’s face it,” he began. “The world has not gotten any less complex or dangerous in the last 40 years and we are all a part of a growth industry. The event ended with a wreath-laying by the INSCOM command team of Ballard; INSCOM Command Sgt. Maj. Dayron Vargas; INSCOM Command Chief Warrant Officer 5 Wendy Wayman; along with special guest, retired Chief Warrant Officer 4 Alan Lindley, a veteran of INSCOM’s predecessor organization, the Army Security Agency, and the Vietnam War.

The wreaths were placed in front of two prominent memorials in front of the INSCOM headquarters building, paying homage to Service members from the military intelligence community who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their country. Ballard and Vargas laid a wreath at the INSCOM Fallen Soldier Memorial, which is made

of three granite pillars, honoring those who gave their lives in support of INSCOM’s mission. The other memorial honors the Army Security Agency, with a statue of a lone Soldier atop its base. Lindley, a former member of this agency, laid a wreath at the memorial containing the names of many of his fallen comrades, with Wayman.

Memorial observance honors heroes By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Fort Belvoir honored the fallen for Memorial Day, May 25, in Thurman Auditorium. “To those who have gone through war and deployments, we live very different lives. This is Memorial Day to us,” said Donna Eldridge, president of the Gold Star Wives, Potomac Chapter. When talking about her husband, Eldridge, she said she cherishes his memory and his service to the nation. She considers him a hero, not just because of his service, but because of the way

he led his life. “We must never forget that we are in the land of the free because we are the home of the brave,” she said. Retired Col. D.R. Butler, guest speaker, quoted Gen. George S. Patton, saying, “Let me not mourn for the men who have died fighting, but rather let me be glad such heroes have lived. If it be my lot to die, let me do so with courage and honor … please, oh Lord, protect and guide those I shall leave behind.” Butler was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Reserve in May 1955. Army for 30 years and retired as a colonel in December 1985. Butler then became the associate athletic director for community relations at George Mason University and an adjunct professor at the school of policy, government and international affairs. Butler said it is not only important to remember history, but to also look toward the future. “Since the birth of our nation, there have been three major changes to our armed forces, such as the integration of all races of Soldiers and the increase in technology, he said. At almost 83 years old, Butler experienced many social changes, having grown up under segregation. “When I was 5 years old, I wanted to be a pilot. My father disagreed. His view was that no colored man would ever be a pilot,” he said, recalling the conversation with his father. Butler’s father expected him to go to college and teach in a black school system near where he grew up in Texas. However, he didn’t want to do that. In 1947, when Butler was a high school sophomore, Truman integrated the military, he said. “I viewed this as the opportunity to become a pilot. That was my plan … to go to college with an ROTC program, get my degree and commission, and enter active duty to attend flight school,” Butler said. He attributes his faith and his father for allowing him to overcome many

Learn how to get there from here

By Adrienne Anderson Staff Writer If you’re looking for a vacation, or a way to save on gas during your daily commute, there is a Fort Belvoir Travel and Commuter show from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 8, at the Community Center. “I’d like everyone to know that they have some responsibility in reducing congestion in this region,” said Peggy Tadej, director of military affairs, Northern Virginia Regional Commission. “We’re compacted, we’re growing. Bike-to-work (or) take the train, (just) know there’s funding out there available for alternative transportation.” Vendors will be available to help commuters look at their options, including the Federal Mass Transit Program which offers $255 per month for federal employees who use public transit. There are more than 69,500 vehicles that, on average, enter Belvoir’s gates each day. The goal is to reduce single-occupancy vehicles, Tadej said.

“It’s an opportunity to have a one-stop shop. Someone will be able to answer questions that you might have about commuting,” she said. The event is also an ideal time for families to see what fun opportunities there are for family vacation and travel plans, with vendors available offering affordable, summer travel opportunities. “We want everyone to come to the Travel and Commuter Show to meet our Leisure Travel Services vendors firsthand and gather information on the different attractions and commuter opportunities,” said Romel Voellm, community activities center director for MWR. “We will have many door prizes, including attraction tickets and gift cards. All you need to do is attend and visit at least eight vendors for a chance to spin our prize wheel to win a prize. This is a great event for all and I encourage everyone to take time to stop by. The Travel and Commuter Show will also have refreshments, prizes and kids’ activities.

INSCOM smashes AER fundraising record By Sgt. Jeff Storrier INSCOM Public Affairs The U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command raised a record $18,360 in support of the 2017 Army Emergency Relief fundraising campaign, taking first place in the large organization category on Fort Belvoir. The effort surpassed last year’s total of $14,500 by 21 percent, previously the highest amount raised by INSCOM personnel. The record collection was made possible through the hard work of the AER fundraising campaign team keyworkers, led by 1st Lt. Jenny Carlo, executive officer, INSCOM Headquarters and Headquarters Company, and the INSCOM workforce who were willing to support a worthy cause. “This was truly a total force accomplishment,” Carlo said about the support from INSCOM Soldiers and civilians. “This year’s AER campaign shows just how committed INSCOM is to living up to the phrase, ‘Mission First, People Always.’” More than $14,000 was raised in food sales alone, according to Carlo. The AER fundraising team hosted a variety of themed, food-service events at the Nolan Building on Belvoir throughout the campaign season, March 2 through May 15. Thursdays’ lunch menus brought an international food flare to the workforce as INSCOM personnel lined up for a taste of Pacific fusion; a tour of Italy; southern barbecue; Cinco de Mayo and Hawaiian barbecue, with all proceeds donated to AER. The campaign’s most highly anticipated event was also the most unique. The INSCOM AER 2nd Annual Master Dessert Maker Competition featured a determined pool of entrants.

Fort Belvoir children leave the starting gate of the 2nd annual Child, Youth and School Services Color Run, last year, in the Tompkins Basin area of the installation near Outdoor Recreation. The 2017 event is June 10, starting at 9 a.m.

CYSS hosting 3rd annual Color Run By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Fort Belvoir’s Child and Youth Services will, once again, help the youngest members of the community celebrate the start of summer with a unique fitness challenge that starts a day’s worth of fun, June 10 in the Tompkins Basin area, starting at 9 a.m. in front of the Outdoor Recreation building. Check-in gets underway at 8 a.m.

The 3rd annual Color Run, sponsored and coordinated by MWR and CYS’s sports and fitness program, is open to all youth ages 4 – 16 and is intended to provide another recreational activity to children amid the installation’s itinerary of events designed to encourage fitness during the vacation season. According to Brianna Kipper, ODR manager, there will be lots of activities all day for children and families to participate in. The

Color Run has obstacles that race participants will have to negotiate, all while volunteers throw colored powder at the runners. More than 200 children participated last year. Registration for the 2017 Color Run is open at CYS Parent Central, located at the Markham School Age Center, Bldg. 950, or through WebTrac. For more information call Julie Libert, 703-805-9138.

MWR, AAFES hosting 5K Fun Run By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Belvoir community members are invited to show their commitment to maintaining healthy habits by participating in the second annual MWR – AAFES 5K Run/Walk June 16, starting at 8 a.m. at the Exchange. The event began last year when the two mission partners joined forces to stage such an event to promote health and fitness across the installation, according to Sheila Edwards, Belvoir sports program director. “This race came through a partnership with AAFES to give Belvoir runners another chance to compete,” she said. “AAFES worked with us to put the event together and they give away T-shirts and provided water and snacks at the end.” “AAFES staff supports the race and we’ll have Fort Belvoir’s Emergency Services Directorate—including the police department (whose officers escort the runners through the course), the fire department, and volunteers from Fort Belvoir Community Hospital,” added Karen Anderson, AAFES Safety and Health chairperson during last year’s event.

During my sports heyday, way back in the 1980s, quite a few fairly novel recreational activities were moving into the mainstream. Things like hacky sack (weird endeavor), Frisbee golf, rollerblading and BMX bicycling were appearing more and more often on sports networks and even sitcoms, and it seemed the stage was set for quite the innovative decade. Of course, back then I took a lot of trips to the beach to engage in my sport of choice—surfing—and a lot of those adventures put me on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Well, it was during one of those trips that I discovered a place known as Jockey’s Ridge State Park, just below the town of Nags Head, that was little more than a great pile of natural sand dunes that rose high over the coastline like shifting Saharan monoliths. Curious, I decided to check out the view from atop these dunes and it was there that I learned the place was famous for hang gliding, owing its attraction to the up-drafting onshore winds that, as it happens, Wilbur and Orville Wright took advantage of a few miles north in Kitty Hawk. Sure enough, there were at least 20 men and women working their way upslope toting brightly colored hang gliders, preparing to take to the sky for a bird’s eye view of the surf. I’d often seen hang gliding on TV and, for a fleeting moment, considered trying it. But then I got to thinking about the misfortunes I’d suffered flying regular old kites as a kid and the excitement instantly turned to terror. The first thing to remember about hang gliding is that you’re not connected to the ground by anything resembling a string, and with the storied unpredictability of the weather— especially wind—what’s to stop an unusually strong updraft from sending you thousands of feet into the sky. I mean, you could find yourself looking over at a passing 747 before you got sucked right into the jet stream. Call me overly pessimistic but the serious possibilities associated with this sport, I’m afraid, outweigh any adrenaline-tinged pleasures it might give. (You’re thinking about that 747 and the jet stream now aren’t you?)

Fort Belvoir military and civilian runners leave the starting line of the 2016 Army Ten-Miler qualifying race, July 7 in Mount Vernon. This year’s qualifier is June 29, starting at 5:30 a.m. at Mount Vernon.

Belvoir Army Ten-Miler team seeks runners By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Fort Belvoir Soldiers and civilians are invited to push their endurance to the limit to earn a slot on the prestigious teams that will represent the installation at the 2017 Army Ten-Miler, which is Oct. 8 in Washington, D.C. This year’s qualifier run is June 29, starting at 5:30 a.m. at Mile Marker 0 at the south end of the George Washington Estate parking lot at Mount Vernon. The Army Ten-Miler is an annual event sponsored by the U.S. Army Joint Force Headquarters, Military District of Washington, National Capital Region. Celebrating its 33rd installment this year, the ATM is intended to promote the Army, build esprit de corps, support Army fitness goals and enhance community relations. Thirty-five thousand runners compete each year in the Army TenMiler—the second largest 10-mile race in the U.S., after the Philadelphia Broad Street Run. The qualifier will establish the final Open and Mixed Active-Duty (co-ed) team rosters of eight athletes each, with two alternates, according to the best finish times. The qualifier is hosted by Belvoir’s Headquarters Battalion and coordinated by Lt. Col. Chris Tomlinson, battalion com-

mander; and Joe Castro, Kawamura Human Performance Center supervisory sports specialist. Runners should arrive for the qualifier by 5:15 a.m. to check in and register. The 10K course will follow an “out and back” format by which athletes will run 3.1 miles out (to the turnaround point at Waynewood Blvd.), along the paved path running along the banks of the Potomac River parallel to the George Washington Memorial Parkway; and return to the starting point at the “Zero” marker. Safety personnel and event support staff from the battalion, MWR and Belvoir Hospital will be stationed at various checkpoints along the race route to maintain communications, ensure runners stay hydrated and deal with accidents, if necessary. Once the final roster is established, Belvoir teams will train two or three mornings each week, until the Army Ten-Miler, Oct. 8. During the actual Army TenMiler, only the top four times for each team will be used to tally the total team time. For the Mixed Team, at least one of the four recorded times must be turned in by a female. Tips for sharing the road By Lt. Steven Kinchen DES watch commander The Belvoir Police Department wants everyone to know that, as the weather gets warmer, people are becoming more active outside. It is important for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to pay attention and use caution when traveling or exercising on the installation during the early morning, at dusk or after dark. Below are a few tips that can help reduce injuries from happening. Motorists: Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks, whether the crosswalk is at an intersection or is mid-block. Always yield to pedestrians and bicyclists when turning Virginia Law states that motorists must approach and pass a bicyclist at a reasonable speed at least three feet to the left of the bicyclist and shall not again proceed back to the right side of the highway until safely clear of such overtaken bicycle. Change course, slow down or stop, if necessary, to allow pedestrians to cross intersections safely and quickly. Cyclists: Cyclists must obey all traffic signals, signs and devices, except when dismounted. When dismounted, pedestrian rules apply. Bicycles being used at night must

have a suitable headlight and either a tail light or red reflector. Cyclists must wear an approved helmet and are encouraged to use other protective equipment. Ride with the flow of traffic and use appropriate hand and arm signals when turning. Pedestrians: Pedestrians must use crosswalks and sidewalks, where available. If there are no sidewalks, pedestrians walk on the side of the road facing approaching traffic and yield the right of way to all vehicles. Pay attention to your surroundings and drivers. Runners are encouraged to always carry identification with them when they go out and wear clothing that allows drivers and people to see them. Also, according to Virginia State Code, it’s unlawful for anyone to operate a vehicle, bicycle, wheelchair, power bike or moped with music earphones in one or both ears. Whether you are a driver, cyclist or pedestrian on Belvoir, the police department wants the community to stay alert on the roads and always anticipate what others may do. Taking these precautionary measures can help prevent injuries from occurring, if we all learn to share the road responsibility, on and off the installation.
