Regional Health Command-Atlantic welcomes new commanding general By G.H. Cureton Regional Health CommandAtlantic Public Affairs Brig. Gen. Telita Crosland assumed command of Regional Health Command-Atlantic during a ceremony hosted by Lt. Gen. Nadja Y. West, Army Surgeon General, on Fort Belvoir Tuesday. Regional Health Command-Atlantic is the largest of the U.S. Army’s four health care regions that provide medical, dental and public-health support to approximately 600,000 Soldiers, retirees and their families at Army medical centers, hospitals, and clinics from Wisconsin to Puerto Rico. West called Crosland a selfless, phenomenal leader who excelled during a time of transition and change in Germany in 2010 and, years later, as the chief of operations for the Army Medical Command. “I’m really pleased to see you as the commander of the largest region in our Army Medical Command, West said. “You are going to do great things and you, as a regional team, are lucky to have such a great, caring, compassionate, competent, put all of the superlatives there, and that describes General Crosland.” Taking the podium for the first time as the regional commanding general, Crosland thanked the surgeon general for giving her the opportunity to lead the most powerful and diverse region in Army Medicine. “As many of you are aware, our health care system is in the

exam room. We will continue to serve our patients, our Army and our nation with distinction.” Crosland is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy; the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences; the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College; and the Dwight D. USO-Metro helps transitioning Service members take Next STEP Story, photos by Paul Lara

Students came to class, Monday at the USO Warrior and Family Center on Belvoir and also turned a key transition point, as the dozen-plus students completed the course for Certified Information System Security Professional, or CISSP. The program is for active-duty Service members interested in cyber security careers after transitioning from the military. This is the second time USO-Metro has conducted this class, which is made available through Project Next S.T.E.P. (Service Member Transition Program), a USO career-education program designed to prepare and train soon-to-transition Service members for in-demand, civil certification tests. The course provides current skills that

complement the strong leadership skills Service members have. Maura Gondek, a transition program specialist with USO-Metro, said this is important validation of what Service members have already accomplished. “We knew that the Service members had all these skills and knowledge in the military world, and it was just getting that knowledge translated into civilian terms and experience to make them more marketable and employable,” she said. Project Next S.T.E.P. is expanding to support military spouses who may be transitioning to a new work environment as a result of a PCS move. Other education opportunities offered twice yearly are Cisco Certified Network Associate and Project Management Professional training.

Military Clothing now open Sundays By Garrison Public Affairs We would like to announce that Military Clothing Sales at Belvoir’s Exchange is now open Sundays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. “We’re meeting Soldiers, Service members and families’ needs,” said Lt. Col. Chris Tomlinson, Fort Belvoir Garrison commander, of the new hours. To maximize the opportunity for all our Fort Belvoir Service members and their families, the clothing shop is also open Tuesdays through Fridays, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Saturdays from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. “We are conscious of the challenges within the National Capital Region for our Servicemen and -women to readily access our great facilities, so we must remain agile and responsive. That’s what drove the decision to adjust our hours and maximize the weekend access,” Tomlinson said. “We will closely monitor how these changes support our customers and continue to support the Service member.”

ODR puts the fun in summer BubbleBalls, stand-up paddleboards added

By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Outdoor Recreation recently acquired new outdoor goodies for friends and families to enjoy. BubbleBalls, jousting equipment, a new bounce house and more join the ranks of Outdoor Recreation’s many attractions. Outdoor Recreation provides guests space for activities including birthday parties, family reunions, and celebrations besideS the opportunities to engage in outdoor activities such as kayaking, fishing and hiking. “A lot people don’t know about the basin and all of the opportunities that are down here,” said Brianna Kipper, Outdoor Recreation director, adding that she wanted others to know about the options available for those looking for recreational activities. They offer competitively-priced goods to be rented such as their new BubbleBalls, which are more expensive to rent off post. Bubble Balls are large, inflatable balls that people ‘wear,’ similar to Sumo suits. “We have access to the Potomac River right here,” Kipper said. “We have canoes, kayaks and paddleboards -- a super-large inventory.” Outdoor Recreation also offers new classes for those who want to learn how to paddle in canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards. Their Intro to Paddling classes are $5 per boat and are offered at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, Aug. 14 and Sept. 11. Other rentals that are available through Outdoor Rec include cabins, tents, archery equipment, and parks and pavilion use for private parties. For more information, contact Outdoor Recreation, 703-805-3081. Outdoor Recreation is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day and is located at 10155 Johnston Road, Bldg. 778.

INSCOM downs USALSA in soccer barn burner By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Intelligence and Security Command and U.S. Army Legal Services Agency closed out the FY18 intramural soccer regular season with a defense-heavy showdown that kept the action at full steam through two dynamic periods, May 30 at Fremont Field. Fifth-place INSCOM (3-3) went into the contest determined to safely secure its slot in the forthcoming championship tournament and, courtesy of a powerhouse passing game and a no-prisoners approach to defense, the squad emerged triumphant, taking a 2-1 victory and punching its ticket to the playoffs. David Linares netted both of INSCOM’s scores and Josh Dickenson scored one for USALSA. From the Villages at Belvoir, concerning recent rains Dear Residents, First, we want to thank each of you for your patience as heavy rain moved through our community over the past few days. You may see damages or standing water at or around your home and/or Village. We have and will be responding to damages left behind by the rain. Our maintenance team has been working through the weekend and will continue to work to triage all of the work orders called in over the weekend. If we have not yet made it to your home, a member of our team or one of our contractors will be coming soon.

With all the heavy rainfall, there are areas throughout the Villages that still have standing water or need to dry out before we can get back to regular mowing and landscaping operations. We will send out a new mowing schedule, once its available. We ask for your continued patience and understanding as we work this week to make repairs and to clean up our beautiful community. Of course, if you have any questions, please reach out to your community management office. - The Villages at Belvoir Team
