Warrior Transition Bn. gains new leader By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Lt. Col. John Litchfield relinquished command of the Warrior Transition Battalion to Lt. Col. Joseph Messina, June 21 at the Defense Acquisition University’s Scott Hall. Brig. Gen. Telita Crosland, Regional Health Command-Atlantic commander, said the Battalion’s mission cannot be understated. The Army has a holistic commitment to Soldiers and families, and the WTB role is critical in helping Soldiers return to the force or transition to civilian life. “The Army is committed to the welfare of all wounded, ill, and injured Soldiers and their families,” she said. “The commitment has endured during periods of downsizing and transformation, and I want you all to know that it will continue to endure.” Litchfield led the organization with excellence and set the standard for others to follow, she said. Career-education readiness among Soldiers in the WTB rose from 58 percent to 82 percent. And the organization earned a 90 percent during its Operational Inspection Program, which was the highest score in the history of the Warrior Care Transition Program. Litchfield recalled a time when he wondered if he was making a difference. Getting to command the WTB and support the mission made him feel fortunate and answered his prayers to be able to dedicate his time to serving others. “I have seen firsthand, every day for the last two years, the impact that we have on people,” he said. He is grateful to those who touched his life, including a Soldier in the audience who was battling a life-threatening illness. “I hope that our Soldiers who are facing challenges, big or small, find the strength to continue to overcome those challenges,” Litchfield said. And, he hopes

Joseph Messina, incoming commander, Warrior Transition Battalion, during change of command ceremonies in DAU Auditorium, June 22. Messina will continue the mission. Litchfield told Messina that “this is a wonderful job, but it is a taxing job.” He thanked Messina’s family for their dedication to allow Messina to serve Soldiers. Crosland said she had faith that Messina was ready to take responsibility for the Battalion.

Lt. Col. John Litchfield, outgoing commander of Warrior Transition Battalion, speaks to the audience at the change of command ceremony at DAU Auditorium, June 22. Litchfield said the assignment was a transforming experience for him.

“You are taking command of an incredibly talented team of committed professionals,” she said, adding that Messina will have the chance to shape and develop the team further. Messina was glad to be following in Litchfield’s footsteps. He thanked his family and friends for

“setting the foundation for the man and officer that I’ve become.” He will continue to work toward understanding and serving those in the WTB, Messina said, “to ensure that we’re providing you with the care that you deserve, so that we can take care of the Army’s greatest mission.”

Belvoir’s Headquarters Battalion gets new leader By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Lt. Col. Christopher Tomlinson, Headquarters Battalion commander, relinquished command to Lt. Col. Andrew Wilbraham, June 22, at Thurman Auditorium. Col. Maria Eoff, Deputy Director, IMCOM Directorate-Sustainment, presiding officer over the ceremony, said, “Fort Belvoir is an outstanding installation with a long and proud tradition of supporting the defense of our great nation.” The battalion commander is accountable for more than 2,500 Soldiers, civilians and family members in the National Capital Region, and provides installation mission support and training. Under Tomlinson, the battalion has excelled, she said. “The battalion consistently maintained a readiness rate of more than 90 percent for 24 months,” Eoff said. Tomlinson was dual-hatted as Headquarters Battalion and Fort Belvoir Garrison commander. “This command team is exemplary and serves as an example of what an Army Strong family is comprised of,” Eoff said. Wilbraham comes to Belvoir with extensive experience, she said, and will demonstrate his leadership and build upon the successes of Tomlinson as battalion commander. “You are up to the challenge. Your experience, motivation and discipline are what we need,” Eoff told him. The past two years flew by, Tomlinson said. He leaves the position feeling bittersweet because of the accomplishments and challenges. The unit’s staff continually met and exceeded standards, he said. “The Headquarters Battalion, by its origin, is a command and control organization provided to support a variety of military personnel across the installation,” Tomlinson said. “With its current force structure, the Eagle team superbly executes these missions, and you continually meet and exceed that standard consistently.” He thanked Lt. Col. James Matheson for acting as commander over the past few months.

Capt. Daniel Klinkner relinquished command of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Operational Support Airlift Activity to Capt. Austen Hoopes, June 20, at Belvoir’s Davison Army Airfield. “I had this job (headquarters) 12 years ago, and it’s a unique organization and it’s a challenging leadership role, because you’re responsible for everybody, but you’re in charge of no one,” said Lt. Col. William Rasor, OSA-A commander. “You’re the spokesperson for the commander. You represent the values and the standards for the organization.” Hoopes said he was excited to become company commander having been at Belvoir for the past month. “When I got called by the assignments officer, I told him ‘re-read that,’ because I didn’t think I would get another command. Coming into the organization has been awesome,” Hoopes said. “The left seat/right seat with Captain Klinkner has been great. He’s helped me out in numerous ways to get my feet wet and to help me along.” Klinkner thanked his staff and organization for their support and dedication during his time as

The Change of Charter ceremony took place June 21, at the Officers’ Club. “Today, against the scenic backdrop of the Potomac River, we mark the next chapter in this vitally important organization,” said Col. Auto Skills Center as car owners drive on, By Adrienne Anderson Staff writer Fort Belvoir’s Auto Skills Center, a place for people to work on their own cars, offers what patrons need to keep their cars running. The shop has seven frame lifts, two oil change lifts, three flat bays, a motorcycle lift, and a hydraulic prep. Most of the tools are free and some you can use for a small fee, said George Blowe, manager. Staff Sgt. Jeremain Satchell said it was great having the center on post, because it gives people a chance to “do your own work on your own vehicle, without having to pay someone to do it.” Saving money is important to him. The costs to come to the auto shop are lower than going off post, Blowe said. An $80 oil change off post would cost you $45 at the Auto Skills Center. And you get help from employees. The cost savings and features offered are big and the center is often busy, he added. “Once they come in, they are repeat customers,” Blowe said. To use the shop, drivers need three things: a DoD ID card, a current vehicle registration, and a shop safety card. Safety cards are issued once patrons watch an 18-minute safety video, also available at the shop. The center is open from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends. The center is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. The shop also oversees the car resale lot and car wash on post. For more information, visit https://belvoir. armymwr.com/programs/automotive-skillscenter.

Timeout Beard weirdness By Rick Musselman Sports Editor Some time ago, I broached a development in Major League Baseball that, at first analysis, I thought would be just another passing fancy. But as several seasons have come and gone, I’ve, once again, been proven wrong. Compared to the knock-down, bang-‘em-up

worlds of pro football, hockey and even basketball sometimes, I’ve always perceived baseball as being “above that sort of thing”— elegant and refined, with players presenting themselves as clean-cut, well-groomed ambassadors of the revered National Pastime (if you don’t count the occasional bench-clearing brawl). But a few years ago, the beard suddenly came into fashion and some of that elegance went right out the window. Indeed, it seems every player now sports facial hair, and it

doesn’t even look well-maintained. In fact, these untrimmed beards (and long scruffy hair to match) make it difficult to discern between a pro sportsman and an out-of-work bum, or as an old lady in a teal polyester pantsuit once called me, a disgraceful vagabond. I realize these athletes remain the best in the game and continue to strive for nothing short of greatness. But I still think some better grooming standards could be implemented. Think of what all those razor sales could do to boost the economy.
